Just think, two days after this recording, Corny has his run in with Santino. Talk about an emotional roller coaster.
I would imagine that the situation with Santino would've been escalated with the fact that he'd just probably came to terms with the loss of Bobby and then with the loss of Lance would've put him in dark place.
Santino is a trained fighter, I know Jim cornette has spunk but I honestly didn't want him to get hurt, I'm glad Santino didn't retaliate when Cornette slapped him

@tylenolpringle2040 no that's a different run in, so he jad the run in back in the early 00s when he was running OVW, & the only reason he slapped Santino is because he knew he could, he had Danny Davis & Marty Wright who went on to portray the boogeyman with him, & they would've killed Santino if he touched him, then the one the OP is referring to was a couple of years ago where they both got kicked out of a convention & Santino wouldnt let Cornette past & was trying to goad him into hitting him again so he could beat Corny up & claim self defence

Ron Ghoul he's been emotional like this a couple of times. Most recently when Jim Ross' wife passed. Corny is an abrasive fucker... But he obviously has a soft heart for those he respects.
It's quite out of character for him, you can really tell how shaken up he is by this situation.
I heard him getting emotional about recalling either Owen's or Brian Pillman's death on another podcast a few years back.
Dave was almost in tears on the show where he & Bryan announced his death. Lance was just one of those guys who was universally loved.

We may say many things about Jim Cornette, but if someone makes him so emotional, we can safely say that person is something special. Like Lance Russell.
Jimmy is simply a fabulous entertainer. He could have been an "Eddie Haskell" in any television program from the 1970s onward. We were lucky to have seen him in his feud with Paul E. and in so many other roles. He IS opinionated, for sure, but he's also allowed to be just a dude. Thankfully, the era of kayfabe is long gone and we can hear the great stories of the people involved in wrestling, and not just the characters that they portrayed.
Lance and Gordon Solie were the two best. Gordon had the vocabulary, and gave me an anatomy class each show. Lance was Mr. Cool - the Chris Schenkel of wrestling.
I agree - i grew up in Louisville and watched Lance Russell from 1981 until 1988 as many weekends as I was able to - he should be in a Broadcasting museum/Hall of Fame. RIP Lance. Thank you for building a family of fans.
When Jim did his tribute for Bobby Eaton after Bobby's death a few months back, when Jim got emotional when talking about Bobby, I immediately thought of this tribute to Mr Russell
GREAT and moving tribute to Lance Russell. I grew up on seeing Lance and Dave Brown and of course Jerry Lawler. Corny hit on all the good points about Lance too. RIP Lance. Thanks for all the memories.

I'm rarely speechless, but I can't say anything that Jim hasn't already said about Mr. Russell.
But I will say that Jim Cornette shows his real character here... there is no doubt in my mind that Jim Cornette is a good man.

People are complicated, and Jim is especially so. He's a complete son of a bitch in some respects, and we dont agree (of course, I don't know the man) on a great MANY things. I do really like the hell outta the guy.

Lance Russell past away not even a month after Bobby Heenan both where very close to Jim Cornette. To hear that his daughter just passed away from cancer before he did was heartbreaking. Wether you like Cornette or not it will be a big loss to the business when his time comes. In two short years after the passing of both Russell & Heenan we’ve now lost two more iconic wrestling names we grew up with in Mean Gene 2019 & The Fink 2020.
I felt crushed when I read that Lance had died. Growing up in central Indiana in the Eighties, I could sometimes barely pick up the faraway signal from Louisville TV on Saturday mornings. Sometimes the picture quality was so bad that I could barely tell what was going on, but I could always hear Lance Russell's voice, telling me what was happening in the ring. Always cool and calm, no matter what kind of madness was happening in the studio that week. Damn. You will be missed, Lance.
Lance and Dave were my childhood. I watched Memphis wrestling every Saturday. Mr. Russell will be missed by many out there whether he knew you or not. He seemed like the kind of man who never met a stranger. Rest In Peace Mr. Russell
I remember when I heard that Elvis died, when John Lennon was shot, when John Belushi OD'd and when Lance Russell passed. Never really know who will leave an impression on you.
I cried when Jim started crying. Emotional stuff.
I've only ever had the opportunity to listen to Lance's work here on UA-cam, but it was legendary stuff. RIP Mr. Russell.

I used to get up early on Saturday morning to watch cartoons and have anything chore wise done so I could watch wrestling as a lil kid . Hearing Lance Russell was the best part of enjoying the show .
Truly one of the best of all time at what he did. Him, Solie, and J.R, were my top 3. A sure fire H.O.F inductee. R.I.P Mr. Russell. You were truly 1 of a kind. The wrestling World has Truly lost a Legend.
Wow what a great show. As an 60 plus Memphis born and raised who grew watching Memphis wrestling. Also my parents and grandparents watched every Saturday morning. Thanks for sharing memories of Lance Russell.
God bless you corny I can't imagine how difficult this was to do and to the Russell family I'm so sorry for your losses RIP Lance and Valerie I love the wrestling business especially the early history and territory era and the era when kayfabe was still in tact I have loved the wrestling business have done since I was about 7 years old (I'm 18 now) whenever I'm sad depressed or angry or stressed I turn the wrestling on and I enter my happy land once more and I owe that to people like Lance and good old JR and Jerry lawler...
JR and Jerry Lawler were the soundtrack of my childhood and they were preceded by their fellow legends Lance Russell and Gordon Solie and I'm so grateful to them...

I for one can't name a local TV show in the whole of America that had a bigger impact on its community for a longer time than Memphis Wrestling on WMC.
I'm blown away to learn Russell was still alive. He looked elderly in the mid-80s.
Fantastic! Fantastic! Fantastic! Not only was Lance one of the true greats but we got to hear the deeper story about what Lance did and not just to wrestling but TV in the Memphis area. Living in Atlanta in the 70's & 80's, we had Gordon Solie but when Joe Pedicino's Superstars of Wrestling hit the airwaves, we got to see Lance and he was different from Solie but he was so good. Corney talks about Lance guiding him on the mic but as I watch those old shows now, I really appreciate how Lance is guiding you as the viewer but it's so sutle you don't feel forced or offended, you want more of it. But the greatest thing about Lance is in the sadness of death, we got to see the real humanity of one of the greatest heel managers of all time. RIP Lance and Corny I hope now the memories bring smiles rather than tears.
It's obvious how much Jim respected, looked up to & care about Lance, sad! R.I.P.-Lance!!!!

Russell was a true legend. Outside of Bob Caudle and Bill Mercer, most of the old school territory announcers are no longer with us.

i moved to just outside nashville tn in the mid-80's, and THANK THE GODS WE DID because i found the memphis television. i had seen some AWA, early WWF(pre and early hulkamania), little of this/little of that.... but never had i seen anything like the "wacky WTF" wrestling coming out of memphis TN. barbed wire, fire, kendo sticks, trash cans, you name it and i guarantee someone in memphis tried it, and it would not have worked with anyone BUT lance russell making it all seem legit and serious.
Solie had his famous catchphrase: "Make no mistake about that." Russell's catchphrase was "Aw, come on!!"
AW, 'C'MON JERRY/JIMMY/TERRY/JOS/EDDIE!!

I was introduced to Lance Russell through the syndicated NWA/WCW shows. Although they role may have been small, I really appreciated and admired the style Lance, Gordon Solie, and Bob Caudle brought. RIP.
Lance Russell is just a bit before my time. So this is nice to hear. Once you get past the beginning. Sad Cornette, makes me sad.
Lance Russell was the voice of my childhood. The single greatest wrestling announcer of all time. Sorry, JR, Caudle, Monsoon, Ventura....etc....Russell was a class by himself. And honestly it is not because I grew up with him, it's because he was the absolute best.

Lance Russell was a Pioneer. Memphis Wrestling was the first Wrestling promotion outside of Indianapolis ( WWA ) . Lance had a unique, Unmistakable voice. He hooked people just as much, If not more then the Stars performing .
Lance Russell was a good long term announcer ,and nobody could have done as good of a job announcing in the Memphis/Tennessee ( in my humble opinon) area.He's third on my list of pro wrestling announcers; this is my order Larry Matisik (St. Louis) Gordon Solie (Florida/Georgia) followed by Lance Russell .Good company indeed!
I've sometimes got some real mixed feelings on Cornette. Like, he can say stuff that just really sticks in my craw, but here, I definitely feel for him. Someone he's known and known of for a long, long time, and just the 1-2 punch of bad news after bad news. That he's even talking about it at all shows a lot of willingness to put himself out there that not everyone would have.
One thing we all have in common!We all have to go.

I was never a fan of Memphis wrestling. It was a territory that you either started there or your career was winding down. Sad that this man lost his life within days of losing his daughter.
Too Bad that you don't know wrestling History or that you cant appreciate ORIGINALITY . Most modern day Gimmick matches were invented in Memphis - Loser Leave Town, dog collar, blind fold, ladder match, scaffold match, concession stand brawl match, empty arena match, etc. Most ALL Big Name wrestlers either started in Memphis or worked in Memphis for long stays at a time . Lance Russell = G.O.A.T Announcer in the history of professional wrestling . Lance = LEGEND . RIP . Often imitated never duplicated.
Universal Talent Bookings dude I'm 38 years old. I'm from the SE Virginia area so I believe I have a wealth of wrestling knowledge & history. I grew up watching Mid-Atlantic/JCP/NWA/WCW so don't tell me shit. So all the gimmick matches came from there, so what. Those gimmicks got over better when done in other territories.
Dude-and this is from someone who never saw a second of Memphis action live-you have no clue what you're talking about. There were three territories where as Sinatra sang "if you could make it there, you could make it anywhere"-Mid-South/UWF, Florida, and Memphis-and not necessarily in that order

Universal Talent Bookings who cares if you watched those organizations, and actually I don't think you watched half of those territories. I watched what was in my region. The greatest pro wrestling territory ever. With one of the best to ever do it so fuck off mark.
