Thank you Geo for letting me put your SE vid on Badger and Blade shave site. We are all very grateful for your contributions to Traditional wet shaving.
The best thing about shaving with these blades is that after there worn out, you can use then on the house for paint or caulk removal. Now THAT's cost effective and efficient! Great video, Thanks.
Great video Geo, I love my SE razors too. Just to clarify for viewers, the SE blade that you see in hardware stores for scraping etc is COMPLETELY different to the SE blades used for shaving, although they look identical. So please do not use the industrial ones for shaving, go to a website like TedPella and get the medical variety, they come in coated stainless or carbon steel (carbon blades must be dried completely after use to avoid rust) keep the awesome vids coming!!
Gem razors strop pretty well too. Just keep a strop and some needle nose pliers in your bathroom, hold the blade by the thick part, and strop it. Since it's so thin, you don't have to strop much. I strop aggressively on the soft side about 5 reps, and strop correctly on the other side a few reps. I strop after use to dry the blade and cure the compound a bit. Don't get me wrong, you're not going to get that out-of-box sharpness from stropping, but you can keep it at "third shave" levels for a looooong time.
+geofatboy Thanks man! They really are though, I have been wet shaving for a few years now and I wouldn't have any of the knowledge I do without you and Mantic59.
Just found one of these today in an antique store. In great condition, in an art deco looking metal case. Metal blade bank full of treet single edge blades.
Was a bit hesitant to use a Star 1912- first single edge I have acquired until I saw this video, you have a very effortless looking technique that I learned so much from. Thanks for this and cheers, hope you are still doing well.
Just got four of these razors from a junk shop along with 25 others! all for £15! They are all in wonderful condition, no brassing at all. Two are USA made, ever ready brand, with a different handle to the one you are using. The other two are British made, one Gem branded the other ever ready, both with the same handle as yours. They all have PAT 1912 stamped where the handle screws in. I'm more than a little curious to give them a try.
thanks geo. just to let you know I apply the musgo real soap with a brush, then a slight rinse.it is very slick. You can apply it with your hands, but i think it is less messy with a brush and you get a good even coverage. I also keep mine in a shaving bowl. Thanks for the reply geo.I always look forward to your videos.Glenn.
Hi Geo, Gotta say that Gem 1912 did look pretty strange at first glance but it sure did a fine job and the 6 shooter brush, oozes class. Great vids as always mate! Be well sir, see you at the next vid on that free style handless DE.
You can use a double edge blade in these. Use scissors to clip the ends off the blade so it fits under the door with some clearance. Then cut off one cutting edge so when in the razor, the spring is putting the minimal amount of pressure on the blade against the stops. Experiment with a used blade until you get it right. Costs less. Lasts longer. Also easier on the face than Gillette.

I found the same razor in Iran, but from Ever-Ready, made in England and British made. What so ever, thanks for the video, I now know what blades I need.
Ha, i was just lookin for a video to look while I shave. Love that brush and the face-drying tips, never though about drying before, the cabinet door ! Lol, it works. Thanks again man.
Thank you so much! ordered razor dovo best quality 6/8 I think it's normal as a first straight razor + stropping belt , brush, etc. I hope I will like it! Thanks for your videos, it's really very useful!
Looking to buy a single blade razor. Was going to go for the single edge, but I'm glad I did my research. Think I'd remove my adams apple with this thing. Don't have the neck for that. I'll try the double edge.
yes, thank you for all the great videos! just curious, how come you do the balm before the splash? I do it the other way around, since the splash is kind of like a toner or astringent, and the balm is like a moisturizer.
Obviously it's a YMMV thing, but the SE blades generally last a bit longer than DE blades. So if you usually only get 4-6 shaves from a DE, you might get 8-10 or more with an SE.
thank you so much for the video got one off the internet. BEST shave ever got blades from cvs also walgreens has them will NEVER use multi blade razor again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, I just picked up one of these in a second hand store. I’m wondering when I insert the blade should I always remember to use the same side? Does it matter if I flip it?
I have a 1950's Gem push button and I absolutely love. I hardly see my DE's and even my straights but I hate the carbon steel blades they don't last as long as the GEM stainless.
Hello geo. Another great vídeo. I was wondering if you could do a review on musgo real pre shave Soap. I have Just started using it and it is very good. Thankyou sir. Glenn.
Geo, what's that mini razor you show at the end that you were going to review? I can't find anything like it anywhere and can't quite make out what you called it.
Hello Geo.I write to you from far away Russia, sorry for my English. I write through a translator.Your videos are really useful and interesting, I'm going to ask you for advice, like a man who understands this very well. I have not shaved in a straight razor, shaving his entire life cartridges. Please advise whether the cost to buy a straight razor? it really is better than cartridges? Thank you!
As a safety matter, I wish that the video had made clearer that GEM single edge blades for shaving, and ones for paint scraping and sheet rock cutting, are different, although they look the same. Apparently the bevel cut on the blade's sharpened edge is different depending on whether the blade is for shaving or utility cutting. Mistakenly getting the wrong SE blade can really do a number on one's face.
+Edward Miles I found the STAR version of this razor at an estate sale. Cleaned it up and put in a SE blade out of a 50 pack of utility blades. I remember wondering as I was preparing to shave if there was a significant difference between the utility blade and a blade that might have come with the razor. I wasn't impressed with the razor partly because of the "stance", but also the smoothness of the shave was lacking. I went back to the Gillette "New", but may give this one another go once I find the proper blade. Thanks for bringing this issue up.
Yeah,, The GEM SE razor is the same so called 1912 patent model as the EVER READY SE razor and STAR company versions...Which all became one company but continued to make the 1912 under their own brand names.........The GEM Junior is basically a variant of the 1912.......
Why give this a thumbs down? It's not an opinion or political video. You're demonstrating something people are curious about. I don't understand those 5 people.
You can please some of the people all of the time but not all of the people all of the time... In other words, there will always be a few haters out there. My opinion is this: if they think they can do a better job, please do so... then send it to me, so I can critique it!
Why is a 1930's razor called the "1912"? (P.s.: the scraper blades have a different bevel on the cutting edge, and would really hurt if used instead of the shaving blades, although admittedly the two types look identical.)
Hi. Nice. With single edge razors like that (I think that's the Artist Club type), could you shave as fast a cartridge (I just use a cheap DE just awhile ago which I've not used in year, I tend to go back to 5 blade battery powered cartridge types) as cartridge coz it seen you can angle that type of razor to a much steeper angle (as steep as cartridge blade angles)? Is that type the as close as a straight but as fast as cartridge but as safe as a DE & cartridge (it seem like the perfect razor:-)? Now I'm thinking of going single edge Artist Club type. Can you resharpen the blade (it seems thick)? Very interesting razor. I like thin and long it is- perfect for sideburns. Thank you. God bless, Proverbs 31
I hope someone will create an easy to use sharpening tool (80,000) for the GEM blades and be as sharp as obsidian, hehe, they are thick which I like. I just bought an all brass version of the 1912 just awhile ago. I wish they would bring this model back all with different art deco this time. I'm going to keep the patina, it's good to know it's 100+ years old- some tech are better & better looking than the new ones like cartridges (costs 11 to 26 times vs. GEM blades & a good DE blade). By the way, on the art of manliness, I'd like to invite everyone to also be a connoisseur of fountain pens, like shaving, one is missing out on the experience of fine writing. It's also one of those 100 year old techs that, if not for marketing, trumps modern ones (modern ballpoint and rollerball pens). The fountain pen that looks good in person & is "affordable" is the Twsbi from Germany, erase proof (for writing checks) ink: Noodler's Ink (sampler is available for little money). Fountain pens like SE or DE saves the environment too (less plastics coz' they are refillable) Thanks:-)
Hey geofatboy! Nice video, I really like the 6 shooter brush. Checked on your website but didn't see it. Do you not carry them anymore?? That would suck if you don't I really want one!
I had the same thought and tried it because I like Astra DE blades and thought I might be able to use them. Unfortunately, this does not work for a variety of reasons. DE blades are 4mm wider than SE and won't fit into a Gem razor. I tried clipping off 2mm from each side of the DE blade and found issue number two that makes this unworkable -- DE blades are thinner and more flexible. They need to be firmly held between the upper and lower plates of the razor. The Gem just doesn't do this, so DE blades placed in the Gem will bend while shaving creating an uneven gap as you pull the blade across your face. It didn't feel safe and so I stopped at this point. SE blades are much stiffer and won't bend when in placed into the Gem razor. I think this is a function of the fact that SE blades have a spine on the non-edged side of the blade. I also think SE are a bit thicker. Finally, the spine on the SE blade makes it easier to handle when inserting it into the razor. DE lacks this spine and so you have a much higher chance of cutting your fingers trying to insert a DE blade in an SE razor like the Gem. The bottom line, it just doesn't work.
Don't use blades you get at the hardware store! Geo used the right blade GEM stainless or carbon steel. Although after dropping the blade I woull use it to scrape paint.
Nice demo. I myself dont use a badger brush due to i care too much about all animals to contribute to the unnecessary killing of them. I use nylon bristle brush from Rooney, although no longer in business, but a high quality brush nevertheless.
George cleaned it with a cotton cloth, and BRASSO RED. It will become a mirror. As if he left the factory. Mine after cleaning it, I'm ashamed to catch it. Greetings from GREECE!
Great video - gave me the confidence to start using my own GEM 1912 razor, amazing close shave! Geo - you need to do that video you promised at the end, the one with that freaky looking finger held razor you show, did you call it a 'handee'? Googled it to death but can't find anything. Come on man, put us out of our misery!! :)
I do hope that Geo was joking about the hardware blades!!! I have been on the TedPella site but never ordered - Walgreens has the GEM blades (they may be packaging them under their own Walgreen label now) and are well priced! btw, I was super lucky, while searching for and finding a DE razor in my dads bathroom closet, I found a GEM Single Edge Razor as well. I really prefer the SE razor and do wish some smart person would market a SE razor...
Awesome vid, so glad to see you posting more vids. Also I have a question. I have been safety razor shaving for a while now and I'm looking to get into straight razor. So my question is what would be the best thing to do as a beginner, as far as buying a straight razor? Again awesome vid, I love all the unique razors, brushes, and all of the equipment you use.
I haven't seen one of your videos in a long time and I just happened to run into this one. Someone gifted me one of these old fellas a few weeks ago so.... I I also make the same joke about the "same blade to scrape the goo off your window" to people I talk to, hey Geo..I think you can get a better deal buying those blades in the 50 pack at Home Depot as compared to Walgreens! Good to see you, brother. PS Awesome brush..where's it available?
Gentlemens Edge We use the Home Depot blades in the shop to scrape off stickers and such... The Gem Blades are meant for shaving: www.shavenation.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_331_332&products_id=1003 Nice bandanna btw!
***** Thanks for clearing that up. Sometimes I make a joke and it don't sound like a joke. My head gear is a Mambo Sok. They don't make this style any more so the two I have I protect well. Happy riding!
Guy just shaved with a razor blade from the hardware store.... and here i am complaining to myself that my 50"s superspeed razor is crap, Im clearly doing something wrong lol
Geo, despite the fact that the SE blade is the same design as the scraper blades you mentioned, it should be made known that you DO NOT shave with a scraper blade. They are not sharp enough to shave with. Get a proper SE shaving blade (GEM, Treet, etc.) Any blade that is the same shape marked "Industrial" should not be shaved with.
I got a gem razor and fhe only blades i could find that were labled "for shaving" were Treet blades. Fuck me i pleeled half my cheek off. Thr blade rusted before i even got done and i feel like i should have just shaved wirh a lawn mower blade
hey Geo, thanks for your entertaining videos! they really help a newbie such as myself to better understand wet shaving
Thank you Geo for letting me put your SE vid on Badger and Blade shave site. We are all very grateful for your contributions to Traditional wet shaving.

For the downward under the nose, come in at a subtle \ / angle to compensate. 1912 is one of the greatest razors ever made.
Gem razors strop pretty well too. Just keep a strop and some needle nose pliers in your bathroom, hold the blade by the thick part, and strop it. Since it's so thin, you don't have to strop much. i have several of these and i love them as much as my DE razors, they are treasures!!
+Rashad Nagi
Treasures... I like that!
+geofatboy Thanks man! They really are though, I have been wet shaving for a few years now and I wouldn't have any of the knowledge I do without you and Mantic59.
As do i. I find these classic single and double edge razors fascinating.
@@geofatboy I still use my grandfather's Gem. I like the angle better than modern safety razors
Just found one of these today in an antique store. In great condition, in an art deco looking metal case. Metal blade bank full of treet single edge blades.

I inherited this same razor from my Grandfather, haven't been game to shave with it yet!
The same kind, a Gem 1912, it was messed up, had green corrosion but its now shiny as new. I love the sound it makes while shaving with it.
I remember seeing this razor in an old Sears catalog from the early 20th century. Always wondered how well it actually worked.
Back when you had to go to the library and look at a book to gain knowledge! Times have changed!
Nice to introduce your viewers to se razors. The gem clog Pruf is my favorite se.
In the old days everyone had mustaches - I bet the reason was is that is was too hard to shave under the nose! Thanks for the video
My uncle used to trim his out with only the blade...
That is the greatest brush I know. Go America!

Geo! keep pumping out videos, ive recently started wet shaving with both a DE razor and a straight, all cause of you! Shave on!
I just restored one i found at antique store. Its a great shaver!
I dunno why, but I really liked that travel razor, the Handy at the end of the video. Can't wait to see you shave with it.
Hi Geo, Gotta say that Gem 1912 did look pretty strange at first glance but it sure did a fine job and the 6 shooter brush, oozes class. Great vids as always mate! Be well sir, see you at the next vid on that free style handless DE.
Just bought one of these. Thanks for the video!
No you didn't
As usual, great shave. Thank you for the video. That looks like shaving with a straight razor or a shavette. That is an antique razor not easily found.
Just in addition here, SE blades can be expensive. The best place to buy them is from a supplier by blocks of 100.
You can use a double edge blade in these.
Use scissors to clip the ends off the blade so it fits under the door with some clearance.

1912 razor ...Probably the best kept secret in the shaving world.....The Grand Ultimate Razor.....Truly a GEM of a Razor...
Glad to see you make another video Geo. Shave on brotha.
Ha, i was just lookin for a video to look while I shave. Love that brush and the face-drying tips, never though about drying before, the cabinet door ! Lol, it works. Thanks again man.
Single edge razor aka straight razor on a stick
thats a pretty clever way to put it
Thank you so much! ordered razor dovo best quality 6/8 I think it's normal as a first straight razor + stropping belt , brush, etc. I hope I will like it! Thanks for your videos, it's really very useful!

yes, thank you for all the great videos! just curious, how come you do the balm before the splash? I do it the other way around, since the splash is kind of like a toner or astringent, and the balm is like a moisturizer.
Out of nearly 300 videos, this might be the only time I've done that!
Like a boss! This video is a true Gem! Love my 1912. Great razor!
Obviously it's a YMMV thing, but the SE blades generally last a bit longer than DE blades. So if you usually only get 4-6 shaves from a DE, you might get 8-10 or more with an SE.
that handy looks pretty awesome. looking forward to that review
Picked up a gold plated Gem Pushbutton (with case) for .25! They usually go about $32 on ebay.
Razor doubles as a Smurf snow shovel. Great video Geo!
Where i find that handy razor bros?
thank you so much for the video got one off the internet. BEST shave ever got blades from cvs also walgreens has them will NEVER use multi blade razor again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good to see another video!
What's the scent like on that Irisch Moos?
love that shave brush with bullets where did you get that also i have a mint gem junior
Good video. I shave with a single edge razor sometimes. It is of later vintage, with a hard plastic handle, and I wonder if it is a GEM.
Hi, I just picked up one of these in a second hand store. I’m wondering when I insert the blade should I always remember to use the same side? Does it matter if I flip it?
I'm not a believer in blade flipping...
I have a 1950's Gem push button and I absolutely love. I hardly see my DE's and even my straights but I hate the carbon steel blades they don't last as long as the GEM stainless.
Geo, do you have anything specific you use daily> Meaning a daily razor, cream or soap, or because of the profession do you change it up all the time?
Looking forward to the next video with the ultimate travelling razor !
Does shavenation.com sell the Gem blades? If not, do you know where I can buy them? Is it a lot like shaving with an injector razor?
We currently do not but you can get them here: amzn.to/3oDYio8
You want to avoid the blue star razor blades as they will rust. Instead buy the stainless steel razors blades by persona.
I use that really flat angle on my Parker one piece screw down.
Hello Geo.I write to you from far away Russia, sorry for my English. I write through a translator.Your videos are really useful and interesting, I'm going to ask you for advice, like a man who understands this very well. What sort of differences will you notice between different safety razors, when using the same blade?
That SE really cuts, you can hear it loud and clear.
I like the brush, round of .357s :)
And the Luminox is good
Thank you for video
As a safety matter, I wish that the video had made clearer that GEM single edge blades for shaving, and ones for paint scraping and sheet rock cutting, are different, although they look the same. I wasn't impressed with the razor partly because of the "stance", but also the smoothness of the shave was lacking. +Cattmann Good luck. In my experience, when the SE blade is right, shaving with a GEM razor is very pleasant and effective.
oh and by the way geo.I too wear a luminox.Mine is the navy seal colomark chronograph 3081.BO.They are great watches.Take care geo.Glenn.

Nice video!! Very funny. Thanks Geo!
where do you get that shave brush
Used to sell it at shavenation.com/ but no more...
Why is a 1930's razor called the "1912"? (P.s.: the scraper blades have a different bevel on the cutting edge, and would really hurt if used instead of the shaving blades, although admittedly the two types look identical.)
Great question Edward.... Gotta research that.
is great your bag for safety razors
Hi.

Can you resharpen the blade (it seems thick)? Very interesting razor. I like thin and long it is- perfect for sideburns.
Thank you.

Steven, Feather says that you can get 10-12 shaves from one Artist Club blade. I'm happy if I can get 6-8.
I hope someone will create an easy to use sharpening tool (80,000) for the GEM blades and be as sharp as obsidian, hehe, they are thick which I like. I just bought an all brass version of the 1912 just awhile ago. I wish they would bring this model back all with different art deco this time. Hey geofatboy! Nice video, I really like the 6 shooter brush. Checked on your website but didn't see it. Do you not carry them anymore?? That would suck if you don't I really want one!
+Theunitbth
Stopped carrying that one a while ago. Thanks for the inquiry, sorry we don't have it any longer.
I think I need to start looking for a Gem. Fascinating video.
Question. Where did you get that cool razor caddy hanging on your door?
He sells them on his website. www.shavenation.com
Very interesting and helpful video - thanks!
I was thinking of buying one of these. I wonder if a DE blade would work with this razor?
I had the same thought and tried it because I like Astra DE blades and thought I might be able to use them. Unfortunately, this does not work for a variety of reasons. DE blades are 4mm wider than SE and won't fit into a Gem razor. DE lacks this spine and so you have a much higher chance of cutting your fingers trying to insert a DE blade in an SE razor like the Gem. The bottom line, it just doesn't work.
I have an Ever Ready that looks just like that
Don't use blades you get at the hardware store! Geo used the right blade GEM stainless or carbon steel. Although after dropping the blade I woull use it to scrape paint.
Are there any recently made safety razors that use this kind of blade? I'm intrigued by this.
Just in case you haven't found one in the last seven years, check out the Blackland Sabre! :-)
Nice demo. I myself dont use a badger brush due to i care too much about all animals to contribute to the unnecessary killing of them. I use nylon bristle brush from Rooney, although no longer in business, but a high quality brush nevertheless.
Thanks for sharing Lee!
Seems to do the job very well! Do you still shave with it sometimes?
Greetings from Germany
...love your vids!!! :)
Have you tried a DE safety razor?
George cleaned it with a cotton cloth, and BRASSO RED. It will become a mirror. As if he left the factory. Mine after cleaning it, I'm ashamed to catch it. Greetings from GREECE!
I used these on a box cutter
Will this prevent ingrown hairs? I get those every time i shave, Any info., would help. Thanks!
Yep as long as prep your face before and after any de or se razor will help you out but you have to give your face time to get used to wetshaving.
All razors have different blade exposure, so some will be more aggressive than others, and some very mild
I've given up. I tried several single edge blades. I now resorted to a Gillette profusion. Its expensive, but what price can one put on ones face?
What razor single edge where you using?
do these use the regular single edge blades that can be found at the hardware store?
+cowboy8555
Here are the blades that are designed for this type of razor: shavenation.com/products/gem-blue-star-single-edge-blades
+geofatboy Am glad to know these are available.
no...ya gotta se the kind for shaving.

Nice Luminox watch!
I don't know if anyone has asked yet, but are you able to use double edge razor blades with a GEM or any single edge razor?
no. they have a different hole pattern that keeps that from happening. and they have 2 different shaves. an se is like a straight razor shave.
Could not get a close, irritation free shave, I tried astra and merkur blades
good video! thanks geo! :)
great vid geo! very helpful.. Would you consider doing an interview on the Moustache & Blade podcast? I'd love to hear your backstory !
I told you geo you could shave with shared glass and make it easy. Nice comic performace too man lol
Awesome vid, so glad to see you posting more vids. Also I have a question. I have been safety razor shaving for a while now and I'm looking to get into straight razor. So my question is what would be the best thing to do as a beginner, as far as buying a straight razor? Again awesome vid, I love all the unique razors, brushes, and all of the equipment you use.
song?
I haven't seen one of your videos in a long time and I just happened to run into this one. Someone gifted me one of these old fellas a few weeks ago so.... I I also make the same joke about the "same blade to scrape the goo off your window" to people I talk to, hey Geo..I think you can get a better deal buying those blades in the 50 pack at Home Depot as compared to Walgreens! Good to see you, brother.
PS
Awesome brush..where's it available?
Gentlemens Edge
We use the Home Depot blades in the shop to scrape off stickers and such...

Nice bandanna btw!
Geo really love your videos, u r extremely informative. The best! ( VLS)
Thanks! Greatly appreciated.
Clint Eastwood approved, Punk!!
Bought a safety razor hoping to use those blades. Got sick of buying razors and can get those blades for next to free.
How's it working out for you?
6 shooters is soo nice but damn expensive
I got a gem razor and fhe only blades i could find that were labled "for shaving" were Treet blades. Fuck me i pleeled half my cheek off. Thr blade rusted before i even got done and i feel like i should have just shaved wirh a lawn mower blade
