Hey Geofatboy. I’ve been learning a lot from your videos - thanks for uploading such good content. “There’s nothing you can’t learn without practice” is some pretty sound advice for all things in life!
My brothers... START practicing with the tops of your feet, backs of the hands, etc. until you develop "the touch"... NOT your neck, mustache area, etc. ;^)
I love how positive you are as if to speak to the person who's already said to himself bleeding in a mirror "I can't do it!!!" I'll definitely try using my other hand now as I've been struggling trying to shave one side of my face with the same hand.
This is the first video that got me into wet shaving, and I have never looked back! I have used a Gillette Flare Tip Super Speed 1955 A3 Razor for 4 years now. The wife got me a DOVO Silver Steel for the holidays and I am about to take the plunge into the world of straight razor shaving! Already have my shopping cart full of a few accouterments that I need (barber towel, honing stones, etc) that I didn't quite need with the safety razor. Thanks Geofatboy for putting together some really informative videos!
Nicked my self twice on the first 2 shave. 1st time I slid the razor a little sideways and drew blood. The 2nd time I started with the wrong angle (i knew it was like 55-60° and took the risk since I didn't know what it would do...) and the razor dug in a little. Start with 20-30° and short strokes. It's actually scarier than it really is!
There are a lot of gents on youtube that give tutorials, but when im unsure of something, I find myself seeking your advice.... thanks geofatboy. You are truly the wiseman shaver.
Just attempted my first straight shave today after my eldest son bought me a Dovo razor for Xmas. I was surprised at how easy I was able to use my left hand and felt more comfortable with my left than my right, which was strange and not what I expected. Only a small nick which I think is to be expected. I feel that I am leaving a lot more bristle than when using my safety shaver. However, I am not going to push this to much or apply more downward pressure as I believe it will as you say just take time to master. All in all, I was impressed with the Prorasso shaving soap. Just got to practice now and remember to do more than one pass to get the result. Thanks for the video, very helpful and comforting to watch before I started myself. Now I'm going to make a strop to keep it razor sharp. Thanks again
I just bought a straight edge razor. Thank you for your demonstration. I will remember to use small strokes and start off slowly so I don't dig in my skin. Thank you...
Finally... a straight forward vid on what to do! Why are there so many vids on straight razor shaving where they don't talk, they just shave and don't say a word. Good job GeoFatBoy!
Thank you so much for this very clear & informative video. About 12 years ago I bought a straight razor with the intention of shaving. Getting the straight razor near my neck the words "cut throat" keep going through my mind & I renounced on the idea of shaving with it. Now, thanks to watching this video several times I have tried & been successful shaving with my left & right hand. I just ordered a Dovo Master from you. Greetings from Switzerland. Oliver
1st timer here (did first shave 10 min ago) "OMG this vid is sooo long, you cut stuff i get it allready!" 4 cuts later i'm back and taking notes properly.

Brilliant!! a much closer shave than the modern razors. better on skin to I hear, you wont break out as much after using one as oppose to a 6 blade safety piece of garbage. thanks
i started using a straight razor at the age of 22, but when i watch geo i find that i copy his facial movements without realising, he's very experienced, i still learn small tricks here and there just by watching him. Thanks Geo!!
A great video! I just received a Feather Artist Club folding razor for my birthday. I told my wife if she bought me anything related to shaving that she should consider Shave Nation as I've benefited from your videos. She did use Shave Nation and I hope others do as well. Amazon may have it cheaper but your videos help and also inspire. Anyway, I have to admit I was a bit nervous since it was my very first time. I also have to admit that I cut myself several times. Nothing big but enough to get my attention! Afterward, I found this video and discovered I wasn't holding the razor in the proper fashion. I've watched it three times now, pausing at various points to practice my grip to make sure it is right. I think my next go around will be better. Finally, I was happy to hear you say that the learning curve is steep and not short. That makes me feel not so bad about my first attempt! Thanks again!
The only essentials for s straight razor are the razor, strop, hone (or service) and cream/soap. Though if you use a soap a brush is more or less necessary, but don't discount either. Brushes allow a little to go a long way. To be honest with a brush, a $3 bar of shaving soap could last a year. It will also help conserve most shaving creams yore already using since it helps a little to a long way.
If you don't want to get razor burn and those little red dots yes, it's also allows for a smoother shave. You'll also want to use and after shave or lotion.
Realized a little while back that I was bored shaving with my Mach3, and decided to make a change. After research, I now and waiting for my Dovo 105 and sharpening stones and strop. Thanks for the videos! A number of vloggers have made my pursuit of this new hobby interesting.
Notice how there seems to be a retaliation against cartridge razors? Is it the economy or are people starting to wake up with more accessibility to better quality traditional shaving products...
I think it's just that when you try a safety razor or straight razor and get the hang of it, you realize how crappy the multi-blade jobs are. That and, like you said, it's a lot cheaper to shave using the older style methods. I'll never go back.
i've switched to straight razors because i have a beard, and trimming it and giving it a shape is impossible with safety razors, if you want a good shave you need a straight one
Eh, my face get irritated from regular three blades, so I wanted an alternative. I came here, but decided I probably couldn't learn this. Then the other day I went to get my haircut at an old barbershop, and the I got a shave there with a straight razor. My face didn't get irritated by the straight razor and I left feeling relaxed. (Plus straight razors are pretty manly.)
I switch to a straight razor because I was tried of cutting myself and having bumps from a 4 bladed razor. Thanks for the tutorial, I been shaving with a straight razor with the last 5 months and I'm happy with it. No cuts, bumps, redness on my neck, and a closer shave compare to the 4 blade razor. Yes the straight razor is really pricey but worth it and its my partner in crime now and for life. Now I feel like a badass when I shave which is a plus. :D
Shawn Stein It's all part of the Zen-Like experience that is Straight Razor Shaving! Better for you: You feel like a B.A. doing it! Better for your skin: One blade results in less irritation than 2-3-4-5-6-50 blades Better for the environment: Not adding to the millions of cartridges dumped. DONE!
Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial. Just did my first straight shave, and thanks to this video, I came out with a cleaner shave than any cartridge I've ever used. I have no razor burn or bumps, and I only nicked myself a couple of times (and with a blade this sharp, the cut was so gentle and clean, I didn't even realize I'd nicked the skin until I saw a bit of blood coming up). Geo may be right in saying it will take around 100 shaves to reach your perfect technique, but with a little bit of homework, even a complete novice can come out pretty well. For anyone not sure that they want to try straight shaving, let me expound on the benefits. First is cost. Straight shaving can be expensive to get into, but the long-term costs are nowhere near what you get with cartridge systems. The cheapest decent cartridge I've found is the Pace 6 from Dorco USA. This company supplies Dollar Shave Club, so you may know the blade as the DSC Executive. These babies run $1.70 apiece when you buy a single 4-pack. A Gillete Fusion will set you back a whopping $4 per blade at WalMart. I bought a Parker straight razor with 100 disposable blades for $30 on Amazon. While I definitely want to get a proper razor eventually, I highly recommend this for anyone just getting their feet wet. You don't want to invest $200+ in the razor, strop, hone, etc and then find out it just isn't for you. My total initial investment including the razor, blades, pure badger brush, brush/razor stand, lather mug, and a big cake of shave soap came to about $60. If I get even two shaves out of a blade, that equates to almost 2 years' worth of shaves for the cost of about 1 years' worth of Fusion cartridges. Replacement packs are about $7.50 for 100 blades. Second, you get a better shave. No matter which cartridge I used, I always got missed stubble and razor bumps on my neck, even with a fresh blade. I've been shaving with cartridges for almost 15 years, and my first try with a straight razor is as close as any cartridge shave I've ever had. I also have no unsightly razor bumps. With even a month of practice, I know I'll be well beyond what I've ever been able to do with cartridges. Third, It just feels cool. Yes, it's more of a process (until I get a solid timed routine down, I'm going to be shaving at night instead of in the morning), but that process includes a bit of pampering yourself. Yes, putting a hot moist towel on your face helps soften the whiskers for a better shave, but it also feels damn good. It's relaxing. It's somehow just inherently more manly to bust out the lather mug and brush instead of some aerosol tube of goop and scrape off facial hair with an actual blade instead of some flimsy plastic nonsense. If that isn't enough of an experience for you, you can always play the Sweeney Todd soundtrack in the background.
The video that started it all. For you and for me. Started in 2013 and use straight 90% of time and double edge and just bought Feather DX teak shavette
Thanks, You showed me what I figured out by trial and error and forgot 33 years ago. I just bought two different type again torestart. I will save and recomend your video.
I just used a straight razor for the first time. It was due to this video that I bought one. Thank you, despite the nicks I know I'm going to enjoy this.
Thank you for this excellent tutorial! I just finished my first straight razor shave with decent results and no nicks, thanks largely to the excellent advice and demonstration given here. This really is the way to shave, for anybody interested. Very soothing and the end result is finer with less stress on your skin. BULLY.
Adrian Myers Many people will think that you are much younger than your actual age in years. Can it be attributed to shaving with a straight razor? I'd like to think so... BULLY!
Good info for newbies and or people that don't have dad's to show them the way. I saw a lot of people with problems of burn and irritation. I used mach 3 and now, at the moment, I use safety and straight razors. I can get a close shave with any of the three I mentioned above. What you have to do with a "disposable" and even safety razors is just have your skin wet. The "shave" with cream or soap will get most all your hair off, but to stop that burn and get smooth, splash your face with cold water and have your face drenched with water and put the disposable razor under the cold water, don't shake off excess, and pull your skin (you will feel the tiny, tiny stumbles; good enough like that, but to get ultra smooth) and shave your neck or face a few or 4 strokes and then rinse blades again, maybe put more cold water with left hand on area to be shaved and repeat shaving. You will stop all burns and the like. I know people that shave with a mach 3 in the shower without soap. Remember, it has nothing to do with the razor, as long as it is relatively sharp. It's like cutting tile and using water to help the cutting process. Really wet face with some water on the blades and there will be no friction, that's why we burn or get irritated, outside of pimples and the like. My dad and his friends (dad born in 1919) used to use safety and straight razors but switched because of the ease of use.Watch old movies (1930s to 1970s) and everybody and their brother, all ages, are using straight or safety razors and it was no big deal and blades didn't cost and arm and a leg (referring to straight razors). Just use good soap and cream and plenty of water and the "disposable" razors won't burn you and will do , but a lot more safely, the exact same thing as a double edge blade, it's only a double edge blade with one side exposed, that's all it is and you only use one side at a time, when you get three with a mach 3. Like I said, the last few years I have been using safety razors and straight razors, but every now and then I throw in my mach 3 and it does a good job. Thanks God BlessJamez
I recently started using a straight razor to shave the sides of mohawk and I must say that the clean crisp line next to my mohawk is the closest thing to a professional shave and its quite wonderful

Great video Geofatboy.....a couple of things I did when I started......#1) I use a pre-shave...I wanted to get all the advantage I could before shaving. #2) as a novice I started by only going down my cheeks....didnt mess with my neck or mustache or my chin till I built up some confidence especially getting down the correct angle.

i just wanted to take the time to thank you as i have watched a lot of your vids such as shaving with cut throat, sharpening with strop, pre-shaving and they have helped me with using my cheap razor so now i can spend a little bit more money on a decent cut throat and not take my face off.
many thanks and keep posting.

Hey Geofatboy. I’ve been learning a lot from your videos - thanks for uploading such good content.
“There’s nothing you can’t learn without practice” is some pretty sound advice for all things in life!
Thank you!
My brothers... START practicing with the tops of your feet, backs of the hands, etc. until you develop "the touch"... NOT your neck, mustache area, etc. ;^)
+Ian Sinclair
Practice on your thigh or arm. then try the face.
Thank you for the fantastic advice! I would have never thought of that. My feet are so buttery smooth right now, lol.
Wish I read your comment 7 years ago lol
+RationalPrepping
Thanks Prepper!
Greatly appreciated. Enjoy your new shaving swag!

+Bruce Wilson
"Wiseman Shaver" Love it! I'll own that.
Just got one for a gift
I went Turkey two years ago and got my first real shave .
True, most gents do like 2 in the front & two in the back ;)

Lots of comments on that remark...
Great tutorial man. Every "real man" should shave like that!
I just bought a straight edge razor. Thank you for your demonstration. I will remember to use small strokes and start off slowly so I don't dig in my skin. Thank you...
Practice makes perfect!
Finally... a straight forward vid on what to do! Why are there so many vids on straight razor shaving where they don't talk, they just shave and don't say a word. Good job GeoFatBoy!
How do you care for the blade? Do you sharpen in yourself? I had a hot shave once with a straight razor and it was amazing. I want to give this a try.
Most of the straight razors have a slot where you have to insert half a double edge blade . I've rarely seen one like the one this gentleman has
Thanks for the tutorial. I just bought a straight razor and would probably have cut my own throat without this guide.
Nice!
I'm glad to help keep you out of harm's way :)

Thanks guy. I bought my 1st straight razor today. I've never shaved with one before, so your video is most helpful.
Oliver

That's awesome Mark! Thanks for the nice comment.
"Two in the front, two in the back... that's how most men like it..." I LOSE MY SHIT EVERYTIM XD
Yep,
Left it wide open on that one...
I really was referring to the razor!
Do you really need the bush and all the prep?
Using a quality brush and soap makes a much easier shave for me.
Im going to try a straight razor, but im going to have to hide it from myself when im drunk ;)
I FINALLY SHAVED WITH A STRAIGHT RAZOR ON MY OWN...all thanks to you!!!
Yay! Nice going.
Realized a little while back that I was bored shaving with my Mach3, and decided to make a change. After research, I now and waiting for my Dovo 105 and sharpening stones and strop.
Thanks for the videos! A number of vloggers have made my pursuit of this new hobby interesting.
+schmazly2
Good luck!
How long do those razors last?
Up to 100 years if maintained well!
Clint Eastwood had great straight razor shaves while killing the black hat guys
Love Clint in those old spaghetti westerns!
+Rashed Hiyasat
Great for line ups and trimming.

People are sick of shelling out Ca$h for crappy replacement cartridges that end up in a landfill!

It's all part of the Zen-Like experience that is Straight Razor Shaving!
Better for you: You feel like a B.A. doing it!
Better for your skin: One blade results in less irritation than 2-3-4-5-6-50 blades
Better for the environment: Not adding to the millions of cartridges dumped.
DONE!
You're an awesome teacher, and like you said "There is nothing you can't learn" so I'm gonna try this. Very nice tutorial congrats!!!
Thank you Jonathan!
Enjoy!
Instructions unclear: I circumcised myself. And I'm not even Jew.
Well, congratulations on your Briss...

I think 100 is kind of steep, I was pushing the limit. Most Gents take to it a lot quicker than that!
The video that started it all. For you and for me. Started in 2013 and use straight 90% of time and double edge and just bought Feather DX teak shavette

Thank you for this excellent tutorial! I just finished my first straight razor shave with decent results and no nicks, thanks largely to the excellent advice and demonstration given here. This really is the way to shave, for anybody interested. Very soothing and the end result is finer with less stress on your skin. BULLY.

Many people will think that you are much younger than your actual age in years.
