Hoping Tyler a proper recovery. Much respect and one of my favorite riders. Thanks Scotty for bringing awareness and always looking out for everyone. Get well Tyler!
Tyler is a savage. I hope he heals up strong and quick. That said I don't understand why my fellow riders especially career riders don't take wearing safety gear serious enough. You only have 1 body. The only reason I'm 41 years old and still shredding bmx is because I've worn a full cut helmet , knee pads and shin guards religiously since I was 15. That said I'm sitting here healing with a broken foot and torn tendon waiting for surgery. So it's impossible to completely avoid injury if your pushing your skills and riding and also stuff just happens sometimes.
A few years ago (I believe 2017) I was jumping a 3 - 4 meter gap (I guess 9 - 12ft for the imperial system), which I had done a few times before. But this time I felt it went wrong from the take-off,.. I was going too fast and I got a wrong pop,.. So I tried kicking my bmx away (mind you this was on street), but since I was going too fast, everything happened real quick. I lost grip with one hand, but the other hand started spinning my bars around. As I touched ground with my feet, I fell forward with the bike in front of me with bars spinning. The bars hit my face at full force and somehow my arm got stuck in between the front wheel and forks. I thought I broke my arm but my face should be fine, my buddy drove me to the hospital in my car. Turned out, my arm was just bruised, but instead I fractured my upper jaw, cheekbone and eyesocket all in one hit. Luckily I didn't need surgery as I was hit in "The perfect spot" to avoid any major damage,.. 1 cm higher, I'd have lost my left eye, 1 cm lower I'd have lost my left upper teeth. (I still have nerve damage, if I touch my cheekbone I feel it in my upper lip and vice-versa). I was wearing a bmx helmet, I thought of getting a full face helmet days before but someone talked me out of it saying I wouldn't need it on the count of me "not going as hard as the pro's do",.. wish I got it when I thought of it.. Always wear a helmet folks! My drama story to share I guess. Still been riding since. Much love to these powerful heroes like Scotty and Tyler and all other legends!
I’m only a year younger than Tyler and also lived in the Metro Detroit area at the time and I remember Tyler being a bit of an inspiration for my friend group. Seeing a kid that was our age doing these crazy tricks and getting a Westwood sponsorship really inspired us to go ride.
Tyler is a wild rider, I remember the first time I saw the video from the abandoned stadium my jaw was on the floor😂 I used to ride without a helmet when I was young 12-15ish then my buddy got hit by a car while we were trying to cross the road. He had a massive piece of skin comming off of his head it was down to his skull and we had to hold it together until the ambulance showed up. I haven't ridden anything without a helmet since. One time my chain snapped as I was cranking really hard and I fell over the bars and smoked the back of my head off the ground my helmet had a huge dent in it but my head was fine. Also some helmets are worthless like pro-tec and some others, I only buy poc helmets now because it really did save my head
Wyandotte MI skatepark. I met Tyler long ago when I was 15 16, 33 now. I actually remember teaching him tuck no handers when he was on a 16in bmx, just a little shedder. I'd run into him all the time at various parks and even in a month or two to see his progression was pretty cool; he had a determination even at 13, you knew he was going somewhere. I never got to his level and now I just do DH MTB with small tricks. 😊 Hope Tyler does alright. I'm sure he'll be back on it again. Bike is a lifestyle, a need, doesn't matter how you ride it.

full face MX helmet. IMO there is no other option. They're not that heavy, they're super protective, and it would save teeth as well as the head. Some people may say something about it being weird, or it doesn't feel right, but you get used to it. And dental work is EXPENSIVE. I have insurance and it only covers $1000 a year. I had $2100 worth of work done at one time (3 fillings, 2 crowns). Insurance doesn't even cover the cost of one whole crown. It's ridiculous. A couple hundred on a helmet would save thousands in health care.
I had a very similar crash on a volcano a couple years ago. I had a weird pump and it sent me forward and to the left, I landed nose dive and went over the bars, I broke a few ribs and toasted my shoulder. It was several months before I could pull on my bars without pain.
Vin's crash gave me ptsd, I lost my top 2 fronts hanging up on a spine, one broke off at the gum line, the other broke off halfway, never had the money to take care of it so my teeth are fucked up till this day, it's a constant reminder of what could happen, and people constantly ask about it or assume things like I do drugs or I lost a fight or something like that, people treat you differently because of things like that, it's sad really. Great advice from Scotty. I think no matter the caliber rider you are, you should be wearing a helmet. Doing small stuff, catch a shoe string on a pedal, and bam. Thats it. It doesnt matter if people think its dumb. Especially if you are getting older (like me). Just wear it.

Yep I am with Scotty, please wear your helmet. I have been in enough crashes and seen enough crashes where the helmet did its job. Even if you're just cruising around, wear your helmet. Speedy recovery Tyler.
I remember I would never wear a helmet while riding, then one day I randomly decided to start wearing one. Fast forward a few days and I'm riding at a new park, concrete is slippery and I'm riding on slicks. Go to drop in and my front tire slips out and I fall 6 feet face first to the ground. Split my lip and broke some teeth, smacked my head hard off the concrete too. Curious what would've happened had I not chose to start wearing a helmet only a few days before.
It'll be interesting to see if full face helmets come into the sport as the norm over the next couple decades, the way recreational skiing went from zero helmet use in the 1970s to virtually 100% adoption by the 2010s. I'm honestly considering a full face for bowl riding after this past week seeing this clip dozens of times.
when I used to ride I was 14-15 of course never wore a helmet, but I was a wimp when it came to trying certain tricks.. Any trick taking hands off or on the front wheel I just wouldn't attempt.. I would blast hips, quarter pipes and dirt jumps, my favorite trick was a turndown/lookback and 360's because i didnt have to take hands or feet off... it's funny because I had friends doing barspins and tailwhips that couldn't do a turndown, just matter of preference i guess..
When I was BMX'ing in the 80s, all the 'better riders' used to wear full faced helmets.. Bell Moto 4's... now it seems the open faced helmets worn give little to no protection especially if the face is the first thing to hit the ground... I know which I'd prefer!

Actually, the second crash happened three months ago when I was around 15ft from the floor on a half-pipe and lost the transition for pushing too much on my way up. (Fortunately, I was alrealdy able to get back to riding vert one month ago.) I'm not changing my strategy in the end.
By the way, I started wearing a full face all the time because in 2009 I fell on my face in a similar way Tyler did. It's very frustrating seeing the bike not going the way you think it would!
I see what happened. As his bike is coming down after he hops off the front right peg, his rear right peg clips the edge of the volcano. It bumps the back of his bike to the left and he instinctively tries to correct but the bike peg keeps contact below the lip on the wall and is locked out from correcting the bike with his body and his rear peg grinds the wall while his body jerks to the right, leading with shoulders and finishing with leveraging with feet, but no go due to lock out and it took him by surprise, whiplashed him and he didn't have a back up plan in his head for this scenario and couldn't adapt instinctively after the lock out.
i love how everyone is wearing a helmet in all of your park videos, and its not even mentioned. its just part of the bike. you can get a decent half shell for around $30, there's no reason not to .
Cops gave me a gnarly injury 6 months ago, 8 broken bones on right side of my face. Titanium orbital now, and they had to cut my upper gum like 4 inches to put the plate in, and position it thru under my eyelid and thru nostril. Gnarly shit. I was unconscious for 4 days, thru the surgery luckily. Can't even tell I had anything done except my right cheeks a lil puffed out
I used to skate at my local park really early so i was the only one there. Nothing significant happened but my dad said the same thing. Never ride/skate alone
Coming from a mountain biking background I've only ever worn my full face helmet on my BMX. 😂 Idgf if it doesn't look "cool," I like keeping my face from directly contacting concrete. 😂
What I seen was that his body weight was over the bars a little too much, same w/ Vinnys video... That's why I don't like steep head angles on newer scooter style frames, they just ride weird to me. Good Luck Tyler.... 👍
Shit we talking bout this might as well talk about the Sean stuff, dude grew up at your park so you should be able to drop some extra knowledge the community dosent know and would enjoy
If he had a full face helmet he wouldn't have had an issue. My full face saved me from losing all of my teeth and breaking my jaw. I got weird off of a huge jump superman whip attempt, I landed, on my back on the flat bottom past the landing, my bike landed next to me then whipped super fast onto the mouth portion of my full face helmet. The axel/axel nut, which was sticking way out, slammed into the center of the mouth portion of my full face helmet and damaged it. Imagine if I wasn't wearing a full face. I would have lost so many teeth and fucked up my jaw guaranteed. Full face for life.
Full face helmets break collar bones when faceplanting. Probably better than breaking your face ,or a brain injury for sure but you'll still be recovering from injuries.

Can't even tell I had anything done except my right cheeks a lil puffed out
Must not have been cooperating
@bobanmilisavljevic7857 nice one sheep. Can't cooperate when there's no orders given.
That roof to rail.. Hola Shittaaa.. :O
That's how I broke out my 2.5 front teeth! The ONLY day I was riding by myself, drive to the dentist with my face looking like his
Saw the helicopter and involuntarily yelled “Wolverines”. 🤷🏻♂️
Makes me want a fullface thats what bro needed
didnt someone else do this exact same crash on a bowl like that i swear i saw this video 3 years ago
And this is why I wear full face.
FULL FACED HELMETS??? Why does everyone insist on anything less?
Complacency is the number one cause of injury.
You’re the best Scotty
I just got into dirt jumping at 40. The first thing I bought was a FULL FACE helmet. I like my teeth.
Full face helmets break collar bones when faceplanting.
Probably better than breaking your face ,or a brain injury for sure but you'll still be recovering from injuries.
SCOTTY understand the volcano idea. But in the video your boy hung up on the rear tire in that competition and didn't help him
I am surprised at how big of tricks riders will do without wearing a helmet. I think at the current level of BMX helmets are a really good idea!!
Tyler rocks, nothing else to say!
Have you seen the dude landing a double whip on flat?
@@Randomoffensiveguy2.099% of BMX riders never even learn a flat whip, you do a double if no feet touch the ground it counts it ain’t no Gymnastics that shits fucked I never thought I’d see that done.
Welp what about a response vid for Sean R. 🤔
ouch!
I have said this before and I'll say it again. If Scott wasn't wearing a helmet during his life changing crash he likely wouldn't be alive. Wear a helmet please!
I had similar accident long before Scotty's and everyone in trauma unit said I should have died, only thing that saved me was my Fox® helmet. Helmets save lives and it isn't a fashion show kids.
step 1: wear a helmet.
a helmet saved my life while bmxing as a kid. it was still a trip to the hospital in an ambulance, but thanks to the helmet, i'm okay.
Good point I have a full face dirt bike helmet but I only really wear it at the skate park, which I should be wearing it everywhere I ride but I can't breathe in it, but today just a little ride to my ex work place on the way back my chain snaps just peddling normal and I fucked my knee up
Crashing is a part of the sport....but such severe injuries could have been avoided by wearing a helmet and proper protective gear.
I ride MTB now and still have BMX it's unseen in MTB not to wear a helmet make BMX fashionable to wear a halmet that's the only way to go a helmet is cool when ya riding we all want cool helmets in MTB so why should BMX be different
Volcanoes are sketchy no matter what sport you do.
Remember kids helmets are actually very cool and company's make very cool looking helmets so please wear them.
I haven't bothered to watch the whole video...cuz I have figured out the problem...WHERE A HELMET
Watch it be cleetus mcfarland helicoptering above scotty.
I remeber putting my teeth through my bottom lip snapped my teeth on the bars aswell ended up getting ulcers while it was healing worst couple of months after haha
I smashed out my front teeth riding
Wow so cool. No helmet AND no front teeth.
Imagine if Matt Hoffman never wore a full face helmet.....
