@@rickjohnson244 You are correct about Imagine, but that was written 9 years before the scenario that Larry was talking about where John asked for prayer for his salvation. In Acts we see Paul go from persecuting Christians for their belief in Christ, to becoming one of the most important evangelists for Christ in history.

It's hard to accept as credible, the things that Larry Norman says, after finding out that he had lied about having an illegitimate child in Australia, as the bi-product of an affair. We all have good and bad in our lives, and I have an obligation to be forgiving, and so I will. I am not Larry's Judge. That said; and being a child of the 60's myself, I have my doubts about what Larry said about John Lennon. Nevertheless, God Knows. I don't.

I seriously doubt Lennon ever became a Christian, but it wouldn't have changed anything in the world if he had. Bob Dylan became a Christian, and it pissed his fans off. People booed and walked out of the shows. Same thing would've happened to John.

    • @kvernon1
      @kvernon1 7 років тому +3

I saw Dylan in concert in Hartford CT after his conversion. He sang songs only from his albums "Slow Train Comin" and "Saved". He didn't sing any of his older classic stuff, and that did make the audience a little restless. But no one booed, and I didn't see anyone walk out until after his 2 encores (yes, encores). The newspaper article critiquing his concert the next day said he received a "warm reception". Every artist will draw the ire of some fans if their music takes a new direction. But the fan reaction you described didn't happen everywhere.

    • @ronfowlermusic
      @ronfowlermusic 7 років тому +2

No, it didn't happen at every show, but the fact that it did happen at some shows didn't bother Bob; he'd faced a similar response years before when he plugged in. He believed in what he was doing and just kept on pressing on. But I do think there was a tendency in the past for Christians to think that if a famous singer or songwriter got saved, they would lead their audience to the Lord. a lot of Bob's fans still hate his "Christian period" (did it ever end?), and Lennon would have gotten much the same response, despite once having been a Beatle. "My Sweet Lord" aside, fans weren't too wild about George Harrison's embrace of Hinduism, either.

Incredibly difficult for a rich man ( or rich superstar) to commit their lives to Christ...Too much to lose for most...
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?
27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
      Mark 10

@@rustysruger i don't know ANYONE who has sold everything they had, or given it all to the poor. And I sure don't see anyone carrying a cross everywhere they go, and following Jesus....because Jesus left the planet 2,000 years ago. John Lennon was a very rich man in worldly terms, but was he controlled by possessions? Did he value money and fame more than the love of his family, the love of the world around him? He certainly asked some very good questions; he knew there was more to life than just making money, bedding a bunch of groupies, and being stoned or drunk all the time. Everybody says Jesus is the answer, but what is the question?

@@ronfowlermusic But so what about Bob Dylan and his fans? All that's important is that even one, even if just one single Bob Dylan fan was coming to the Lord it's still worthy of great celebration in the heavens and certainly no slur on Bob Dylan's talent or anything like that. God knows exactly who are his and what we'll do in public or in private; God knows all our thoughts and why we think them.
If Bob Dylan's sticking to Christian principles rather than seeking fame and fortune at any price then he's being blessed immeasurably. Unlike Elvis Presley who sang some gospel with his marvellous voice and whatever his beliefs, preferred very, very young girls and still lived a promiscuous life up until the very end.

Steve Turner started his career writing for Beatles Monthly in 1969. It was a fanzine which had been approved by Brian Epstein in 1963. They were given unlimited access to the Beatles. Some articles were written by members of the Beatles’ entourage including Mal Evans. Knowing this makes it at least plausible that he knew John well enough for this to be true.

I liked Larry's music as a teen ..I was introduced to it in a religious store that had all religious music that was strange to me with odd people working there!I thought it was ahem a secular store it wasnt! There I met a lot of shall we say odd people! I did acquire a taste for Larry's gospel music!I added going to church via an invitation! I listened to his records and bootlegs and exaggerations..on some topics !He talked about Watchman Nee on one of his bootlegs said he'd been tortured etc by CCP..I met the translator at the church of Nees books said no truth in it at all he was imprisoned but not tortured! But even Nees books which pastor told me read where some odd stuff...and the church odd to..yet I was young naive and interested! THE pastor after recommending read Nee said I read to much! And later he tried to seduce a young emotionally disturbed boy!I left before all that happened he was from America I Canada !Larry I met 3 times not personally at concerts..he was always solo...later I realized he exaggerates...as did most Christian's I'd met...just from hearing the record ...he was a good entertainer however...as was his bud Stonehill who never met personally but saw also 3 times solo...as well as other artists Rez band and a few others I cant remember...the one artist I did and still do admire and like is from my own country Bruce Cockburn..I can still listen to him moreso than Norman or any the others ..oh and Keaggy..but Bruce the one I like best...I'm not sure about a lot of Christian stuff anymore but still think there was some real talent 70s there..Also met personally Terry Taylor and Glenn Kaiser briefly...The rest aside from meeting Cockburn never met face to face !Some of the music stand the test of time I feel as art some dont care for much!I'm only interested in it all as art now..personal stuff not really nor all the gossip! I think some of their art exceptional some places the rest tolerable..the message is still pretty good simple basic!I'm not sorry I encountered it all!I was and still am a Beatles fan but dont listen to their music any more much!Lennons death was a tragedy I cried when heard he was shot! What a waste and what a loss!Lennon called 700 club???Dunno ?Lennon never said he wasnt christian he did say he didnt have unchristian thoughts but he also said a lot of things contradictions! He hated Dylans born again music!Said it was embarrassing! Personally I liked it!Lennon was an odd duck to say least Larry said he said in song God I dont believe in primal scream ..no where in that piece did Lennon say such did Larry add it?In fact primal scream therapy inspired that song under Janovs comment God is a concept..Lennon added by which we measure Our pain!People who may have a lot of pain have more belief he says as a way to cope psychologically! UNLESS your a Christopher Hitchens a lot of people find faith a way to cope in a hostile world! Other s find faith for other reasons! Sometimes wrong reasons perhaps!..?I never write much but heres my 2 or 3 cents worth !Lennon was an interesting chap....I've no idea whether to accept or believe all Larry says as facts or not interesting as it all seems!

But I'm not sure if he did turned into a Christian by that time. In 1980 (the year of his death) he even joked about Bob Dylan's song "Gotta Serve Somebody".
There are some stories about a "quick conversion" (only some months) in 1977, but Yoko would have stopped that also...

Jesus talked about seeing someone in hell too. It is possible for it to happen. Here are the verses that talk about it:
      Luke 16:
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And
besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in
place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can
anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “He
said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they

He produced great music, and contrary to what he claims here, he did write music in the 70's pop/rock genre, and not all of it had Christian lyrics. I idolized him as a teenager, but I didn't realize that some people are capable of being boldly disingenuous. It didn't require a documentary for me to figure that out.

Luke 16 tells the story of Lazarus and the rich man. The rich man was in hell. He was in hell then. Jesus said it 2000 years ago.

I seen Larry at a concert in Fort Wayne once. All he did was stand there with a guitar which he never played. He had a cassette player in his hands. He would play the cassette and talk about a song and Randy Stonehill was on it. Then he would fast forward it, play more cassette songs , fast forward, talk more. People got fed up and walked out. I drove an hour and a half, payed good money to hear a cassette tape and only one song sang from Larry. Larry , I believe was trying to do an Andy Kaufman impersonation of sorts. What a drag!

Apparently, In February 1992, Norman suffered a nine-hour heart attack that resulted in permanent heart damage, leading to frequent hospitalizations in the years that followed.[18][167] By early 1995, Norman had been hospitalized thirteen times and had a defibrillator implant, which enabled him to perform occasional small concerts.[15][129] Copy/Pasta

Larry Norman is one of the founders of Christian rock. He was in a band in the late '60's called People. He then released one of the first Christian rock albums in 1970 on the Capitol label called "Upon This Rock."

He had a 9 hour heart attack which left him with one quarter of his hearty function. I went to his last concerts and saw first hand just how poorly he was. Never complained, such grace in adversity.

shakedownstreet48 I tend to believe it when he said John was reading the bible but so what! I've read the bible probably 15 or 20 times cover to cover looking for "answers" or inspiration and never even got a whiff of it. "Seek and you shall find" or "call on god and he will answer" is bullshit. Maybe that's what John was doing. I've been a Beatle fan since 1964 and I think Johns whole life was a spiritual quest. He was always looking for the answer to life. That doesn't make him a christian. It makes him an aware human being... which most people aren't and this bullshit about John being the Beatles is crap as well. The Beatle were John, Paul, George and Ringo. No More and no less but then again these born again Jesus freaks only see what they want to see.
This guys diatribe is just a product of his tunnel vision. Plain bullshit!
