Man this was such a banger episode. Perfect combo of random Scotto building things I never knew about, actual car progress, beauty shots, it really had it all. Well done boys.
Jolly's Comments are always on point! and it is funny Scotto "teaches" how to do this, followed up by thanking Ron for the idea lol. We need a Scotto teaching vlog... Call it Scotto's Nut tricks
Scotto does have the best build videos. It’s not just funny but informative and entertaining. Even though he never finishes them the approach and technicality are on point 😂😂. Keep rockin dude we love it. 🤘
So I have this exact same setup in my 86 with a beams swap and 7 years of hard drifting since it has been built I haven't noticed anything but as Niels said good excuse for something cool looking 8)
@@MrBlockohwhen you shorten the long side of the axle housing, does the new overall length equal the 86 axle? Or are we shortening the 8.8 just to fit under the 86 and not to match the axle sizes. Thanks!
I'm really looking forward to seeing Zack rinse all these Grid cars in Gymkhana with his blatantly-not-Grid drag truck. He absolutely has to do at least one Grid race in it
I once broke The axle tube from the center section. Mig welded it back with basic wire and without pre heating. Held perfect for many track days still. Yours will definetly hold its own against the VR6 👌
Definitely the most simplest build out of all the gymkhana grid cars. That being said, really hope Scotto can finish this build in time ie: not last minute
I've always like the old Corolla as I had a 81 baby blue interior and exterior 1.6 with an automatic that was grandma driven and got it for $480 CND and I blew the motor by spinning an oil bearing and gave it to the scrap yard at 16yrs old and when I watch this I am seeing things I dreamed of doing to mine. Now the motor auction that I wanted to go with was a 22RE or you can even go with the carbureted version intro some Weber's on it. But the 22RE is a 2.4L 4 cylinder beast that can easy push 300 and with that rear end you could build a stellar shift car.
Cool video - one of the best. Those multi-index backing plates are a very neat idea - don't recall seeing those before. It may run into binding issues, that could tend to turn it into an oversized ARB (swaybar), but if nothing breaks that could be a good thing - I'd suggest keeping an eye on the chassis and axle mountings, and making regular checks in the dog-leg links.
Jameson really recalls his wisdom achieved. I do not know if that is really called science, but I was told the same when I became a tool maker. Thumbs up!
Wearing my back Hoonigan shirt with Hoonigan crooked all down my right side. I had my Gymkhana Hill Climb sweatshirt in med stole from me and a lot of my Hoonigan gear. Thank you and I really can't wait to see a VR6 AE86!
Your content makes me happier and motivates me. Because of kids and health problems at 35. I want to be working alongside you. I am pushing myself. If I can't in 10 years, my kids will have plenty of help. I hope. Right now I'm in a studio and my car just got totaled by a guy with a 4 day old car. I had a dark gray honda fit. For mpg but it was invisible to most people. I walked up his rear wheel and flipped on my side. The cops didn't believe me when I said reflex kicked in and I cranked the wheel to the left to flip it back over. It wasn't a thought. It was muscle memory. I couldn't explain it. Plus I had a concussion. You guys are great!!!
I welded my 8.8 tubes, lots of abuse in an xj on 35s and never had an issue. It's cast steel and not iron. Pre heat and post heat is the most important.
I'm glad sh!t car is where it belongs after all the damage. Just hanging there to remind all of you and all of us how these channels started. RIP Sh!t car. Maybe to live again. Being on the wall is just nice for the OG fans and It deserves retirement. Lol glad you're back to your roots. I barely watched This vs That. Thank you for going back to the roots of Hoonigan.
Man. You guys really need to pay up for a good welder. All 8.8s are cast steel center section. Er70s wire is totally fine. Just use 309l tig wire it has enough nickel in it if you’re worried about ductility. It’s one thing to be slops but at least give correct information. You have enough resources from actual pros.
Weight distribution also has to do with spring vs un-sprung weight… the motor is sprung weight, the axle is un-sprung, so the rear of the car will be more ‘planted’ than before due to the weight, whereas the front weight is progressive depending on suspension movement
I had a dream where I was parting out a old suburban to Scotto. Definitely peak dreamscape, but he had a flat cap on, I dont know how he feels on those but he looked like Jason Sudeikis and it felt too off to be reality so I woke up. 😂
excellent job guys, one question: I cut the rear axle of the Ford 8.8 to the same size as the rear axle of the AE86, how did you resolve the issue of the length of the axle shafts?
I am going to be doing this for my te72 soon. Not sure if it’s correct as I haven’t lined anything up or started but from my understanding one side of the axle housing is longer, longer axle. Only cut that side to match the shorter axle and use two passenger(or driver I don’t know which side it is) side axles. I plan to make a jig off my te72 at all the mounting points. Take out the rear end and put the 8.8 in the jig and weld the bracket in place. Not sure if they did it in the video but I plan to make some sort of jig for attaching and welding the axle tube back on. Fuck I might just wing it on that part I heard they aren’t straight from factory. But I don’t believe the shortened 8.8 will match the Corolla width. But it will fit and be close.
I hope for Scotto’s sake this actually gets finished before the event
With the power of friendship this build will get done 👍

How bout if Scotto doesn’t finish the VR86 he has to run the 911 in Gymkhana grid 😅💀
Yes
If he doesn't finish in time... he's gotta compete in the Merkur

Don't forget to strengthen the rear strut towers, there prone to cracking with coilovers IIRC

Jameson is a natural on camera. More of him in future episodes.
Where could I order one of these pre built like these or put in a order somewhere
i think the top links are flipped the wrong way. you'll hit the body on compression. Im pretty sure they need to be pointed down
No, the links hit the housing when the car is set up too low. If you flipped them they would hit at droop.
Weight distribution also has to do with spring vs un-sprung weight… the motor is sprung weight, the axle is un-sprung, so the rear of the car will be more ‘planted’ than before due to the weight, whereas the front weight is progressive depending on suspension movement
True, but typically in road racing, you want less unsprung… So we will see.

I use a ball joint press to push the wheel studs in
So next time just air hammer at those studs in it works really fast. I do have the tool and I do use it sometimes but air hammer is the easy way.
The ARP were a tad too thick and wouldn’t sit in the hole enough to get started.
Why do they make it look so fun I know that was probably a pain in ass
