  • Water damages can get expensive, unless you do the repair yourself. Here is my 2006 Starcraft Travel Star front bunk repair process, and how I dismantled the bunk to expose the damage.

    I watched both parts. Yes!!!! i HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. Seems a bit overwhelming but it is what I've got to do. Thanks for the step by step instructions. I wish I could re assemble with the original outside material with decals. I can deal with the diamond plate, but would like it to look original. Oh well, I'll see what it finishes . I admire you efforts on the camera work. My initial inspection has me somewhat puzzled how to get the whole panel off the camper with the hinge. Mine is covered with some black rubber. HERE' GOES.

      Go slow, take pics as you disassemble, for reference when you reassemble.

    Looking forward to video 2. Looking at a camper with this damage and nice to see what the fix is as I might have to go thru it.

      My video shows it can be done. If you are buying low enough to justify the cost of repair, and she likes the rv otherwise, I think you and your dad will get the go ahead. It is labor intensive, and the end result is clearly worth the effort. I did my repair so that when I sell it next year the buyer will be confident they won't have to deal with water intrusion, at least on the front bunk.

    I have the same unit 2006. Did the pop out frame have weep holes? Seems like weeps may would have assisted to allow infiltrating moisture to escape.
    Thanks, very informative.

    Thank you for sharing this. I’m about to start the same project. Three years down the road, is there anything you would do differently?

      I sold this a year after the repair, but it has held up. So, no, nothing different to add or change.

    Great video! I recently bought a travelstar with the same issue. I'm going to attempt a rebuild. Can you give me the names of the products you used? The glue, spray adhesive, and caulk? Thanks for the video.

    See if you can fit some polyiso foam in the door. Much stronger stuff and you should be able to find some glues for it. Also it has a better R value than styrofoam.

      R value doesnt matter when you have canvas over your head.

    My Hinge Broke on me while camping. It was a disaster. And mine is in the same shape as yours was in. Wet Rotten Wood. And ideas where to get that Piano hinge?

      @@redroofretriever oh ok cool thanks, reason i ask actually is I picked up a 2005 Antigua 215sso from auction but its missing all the bed frames front and back plus the bed bows, I think I have got it squared away but your video has actually given mw the best view I have been able to find yet of the front frame. Now I just have to hope my measurements are good, does yours have a rear pop out bunk also? If so would you mind posting a pic or 2 of the frame assembly? thanks in advance

    Thank you for the video. I have the same issue with mine. My outside piece is okay but the inside "bed floor" needs to be completely replaced.
    Do you think I could use thin metal, instead of plywood. It would give me something stronger to weld the sides together (i noticed when I took mine apart, there were very few welds holding it together).
    So...Id have the original outside piece, replaced syrofoam, then a thin sheet of metal that would be welding along the seams. Do you think that would work?? Thanks

    • @redroofretriever
      @redroofretriever  5 років тому +1

      It would work, as long as you maintain the same thickness to provide clearances and seal compression. If you weld it tight, it may not have enough flexibility in it and eventually would cause other issues?? Thanks for watching.

    Did you ever figure out the source of the water leak?

    • @redroofretriever
      @redroofretriever  5 років тому

      Yes, the bolt holes for the latch on camp side. Water went in there, rusted the sex bolts to the nuts, and need to be cut out. Structure within was solid so I replaced with regular bolt nut and dicor sealant. Rain tested many times the last few months, no more intrusive leak. Check yours, if they spin they likely leak.

      I have the same issue. So water made it from the RV side to the hatch or from the hatch bolts? Did you get water into the storage compartment below?
