Peter at age 2: *Fully developed, deep adult voice* "I'm playin' wecords"
🤣
I read that in Peter’s voice, and holy hell is it hilarious
Already 5ft tall at age 2
Exactly 🤝🤘
Peter was as much a bass *vocalist* as he was a bass player. And not a single voice like it since. *RIP Green Man.*
Absolutely! He is missed.
His history and lyrics is exactly why I find it hilarious when people claim he's sexist. He was clearly pro woman. He constantly spoke about how much he loved his mom, sisters, and as a child his favorite part of the day was watching his sisters put on makeup. 🖕🏻 to those who try to defame him while he's resting in the earth. 💚🖤
Unbeknownst Soul Pffff in today's world, full of ridiculous feminazis, everyone is sexist. F them.
Exactly, Peter women and not just sexually (although he obviously had a deep appreciation for the female form and feminine energy)
ToN had a lot of romantic lyrics and literally wax poetic about a sweaty boob (Love You To Death) without being vulgar; believe me most of us don't feel sexy with boob sweat in any context but he makes even the sweatiest-titted woman feel like a beauty with that lyric lol!
The band also treated groupies well. That is the exception rather than the rule sadly, a GOOD portion of musicians are disrespectful or downright gross with groupies/women in general. I hate when people say Peter was misogynistic because they clearly don't have a fucking clue what misogyny looks like. It's certainly out there, but the extreme feminists often see problems where there are none.
The world could benefit from more men who regard women in the way Peter did. He still could be masculine and enthrall a woman sexually without being a brute pig, which is apparently a difficult balance to strike for some guys lol.
He isn't even my type physically but I was attracted to him as a person. There is a reason women have always loved him beyond being a famous frontman.
I agree with you. I had a few arguments with a few gals online, who said that he was sexist. My man been around his whole life.
@@brisalinas6713 I wish all men were like Peter.
his first band carnivore did have alot of controversial lyrics about women but it was all made just for the purpose of being politically incorrect. im assuming thats where most of those claims came from
YOU LOOK LIKE THE STONER ALTERNATIVE FRIEND ON EVERY 90s TEEN MOVIE
Thanks Vegeta!
Heartwarming to see so many Type O Negative profile pictures. Heh.
Peter wasn't Baritone. Not even a Bass Baritone. He was a Natural Bass, which is a very rare vocal type. Possibly the rarest.
He was the definition of Metal. He was Big, Buff, Bass voiced and played a Bass Guitar, which he made look the size of a Ukulele
We miss you Pete 🤘
Basso Profundo! Though he obviously could get up into the baritone range!
@@tommccrea9738 I don't think he was quite a Profundo. Everything below B1 was very fry-ish
@@StaticYonder I'm no expert, but the reason I know that term, "Basso Profundo", Is because I was a guitar major in college and every music major had to be in the chorus, and I was singled out for being the only one able to audibly sing a low D (the one immediately below guitar low E). They talked me into taking a voice minor course, and the prof told me I was a Basso Profundo. I have no idea if that is technically true, but I can tell you Peter could get way deeper than me with real projection.
@@deanjustdean7818 I don't think he was a true profundo. He was a bass for sure, but everything below B1 was fry, and I think many believe you need a chesty A1 to be a true profundo
Type O Negative is not metal.
Props for giving Pete the recognition he deserves. TYPE Os production value is bar none and layered beautifully
Thanks Stevie Jo I appreciate that. It's nice to see so many like minded fans here that do appreciate TON.
dude wasn't a baritone, was a bass (pun not intended), a very deep bass
Something fun to note is that Josh Silver contributed alot to the low end of the band, sharing rhythm duties with Pete as well, in addition to his Snyth work. you can tell as Petes tone was more on the mid range side of things, while Josh filled out the rest of the low end playing chords of keyboard. It's a unique set up. The interesting (and cool thing) about Type O is that they have a whole band kind of sound. Though Pete was the primary composer, the music isnt focused on one instrument, but rather balanced between all the instruments. Keep up the great work! No suggestions, because, look at the comments!
That's a great observation Tim, thanks. I think that's something that clearly seperates run of the mill bands with good bands. When they actually have an overlap and listen to what each other are doing and try to improve it.
Thanks for the comment! You're free to throw in a suggestion, it won't hurt!
Early on, the band decided that they didn't want any of their instruments to sound like they traditionally should. Pete's bass would sound like a guitar, Kenny's guitar would sound like a keyboard, and Josh's keyboard would sound like a bass and guitar. Of course, not every song followed this plan, but thematically, the music makes more "sense" when you know how they originally structured the sonic landscape of Type O.
@@RockandrollNegro that makes alot of sense with people sometimes mistaking guitar solos for synth solos. Where did you find that information about the band wanting their instruments to sound atypical to conventional rock and roll sound scapes?
He used to rip off the strings of his bass when the show ended and throw it in the audience. The chainstrap was also very awesome. Type o had such a cool image and sound, instantly recognizable.
He never wanted to do encores encore’s, so he would rip his strings off his bass..
I caught 2 of them , one in 99 and one in 03.
Of all the musicians that have passed, I miss him the most.
It's a tragedy is what it is. Terrible.
Him and dime
@@rainbowslushy223 absolutely
What about dime? And cliff?
Agreed.. miss him the most..
Peter was supposed to have 5 brothers, but he took all of the testosterone from his siblings.
Lmao.
Hahahaha
Oh hi mark!
Kinda weird to praise another man for his alleged stamina. Is there something you`d like to share that ur not telling us?
@@Ancient_Entity i know you didn't hit her. you did not. it's bull$#!*
Will be 10 years since Peter has died in April. RIP Green Man.
10 years already?! Good grief.
Ive been a fan since 13 and now im 32. Its ironic that the fanbase is 100x it once was.
It hit me like a fucking ton of bricks when he passed. I loved that band so much in high school (around 2007, I'm 29 now) and I empathized with his mental health struggles, especially body image issues.
Poor guy tried to turn it around, and it just didn't work. He had his problems, but I hope he found peace, in the end.
He died the same day my grandfather did, just 24 years apart. This makes April especially heart wrenching for me. A family member and a musician I heavily looked up to.
Incredible Vocal Style, Hard Hitting Bass Tones. He was a beast. Honestly wished I could've gotten into Type O Negative earlier.
Totally agree Dr SoupCan. I only learned about him through you guys suggesting him. Thanks for joining stream btw!
@@WhichBass No problem. 💚
I discovered TON in 1993 when my dad pointed Christian Woman out to me from the radio when I was 8. They’ve been a lifelong favorite since. I’m not bragging; I feel fortunate.
But gate-keeping fans are the worst. It doesn’t matter when you got here (as a Type O fan), only that you arrived. :)
I agree. I didn’t start getting hard into ToN until after I got out of high school. And I had an opportunity to see them in concert but didn’t go because I wasn’t too into them then. I kick myself in the ass so much right now that I didn’t go.
I miss this band so much... they were one of the few bands I actually got excited with anticipation when a new release was announced. October Rust is one of my favorite albums of all time... you listen to that one with the lights off and with good headphones, man... it takes you places.
Totally agree Tony. One more album would have been brilliant. We just have to enjoy what we have.
Damn, he was one really B I G T H I C C B O I
Damn Boi , DAMN BOI HE THICC BOI THATS A THICC ASS BOIIII!!!!
And always keeps his jeans high and tight, following proto. Keep featherin' it, brother!
Peter Steele was a pretty substantial bass player. He may not have been the most technically proficient, but he came up with great melodies and harmonies with his bass parts and had a very heavy sound, especially by using power chords with his distorted sound.
He is truly missed !
Absolutely agree. Found a niche and was the king of it.
he played his bass like a guitar most of the time, making his a bassist, rythm guitarist and of course a vocalist in one, much like lemmy. i love bass playing like that :)
Peter's sound was a roaring wall of death, and it was unique to him, for sure. Those first 3 Type O albums are demented magic, and thank you for going into such depth in regards to how he created it!
Thanks for watching Christopher, glad you enjoyed it.
Rex Brown or Alex Webster are two interesting players to cover
+1
Great suggestions El Zombie. Thanks!
@@WhichBass Seconded for both.
@@WhichBass please do Paul Gray too! I miss that man. Whenever you have time I'd love to see his rigs
I love bass players here are a few of my favs u maybe could do a vid on, Sean Yseult from White Zombie, Oliver Riedel from Rammstein, William Murderface from Dethklok, and Melissa Auf der Maur from Hole thanks for doin one on Peter Steele my fav of all💕
Peter Steele is my musical idol. This is the best video on anything I have seen in a long time.
Thank you Emu, glad you enjoyed it!
This dude will always be a beast of a bass player.. anyone that uses a goddamn chain as a strap on a bass is a beast just for that alone..
💚
Yeah, that couldn't have been comfortable !
the best singer , songwriter, bassplayer on the channel so far
I can appreciate your fondness for him; but he will never ever be mentioned in the same breath as Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, Cliff Burton, Les Claypool or Steve Harris.
@@evenkeel6131 I think he meant Peter is one of the greatest bassists who also sing and write the songs and melodies at the same time.
"Of course he played the damn thing horizontally" lmao
Ricardo Gonveda I think it would be more realistic just to mention the gear he didn’t use 😂🤣😅
Yeah we heard it, thanks
I see Type O, I click play
John Entwistle. The guy used literally everything, so there’s immense variety in gear. And he inspired most, if not all of the guys you’ve covered, so there is that 😂
Entwistle will be a beast of a video! That'll keep me busy haha.
Hell yeah, I’d love to see Entwistle
I second this
@@WhichBass Ox is my hero but it's all been said so how about the soulful punk of Mr.Thomas of the Attractions. That boy can play.
Could do a video series.
Saw them three times. Thought I had lost hearing in one ear after one of those shows. Good times.
I dont know a damn thing about basses or equipment but I am really impressed with your research and detail. You do Peter's legacy proud thank you
Thanks so much Systris! I really appreciate that. It's a great compliment when non-bass players enjoy my videos. So thank you for the comment.
His distortion sound was just epic. He helped shape my distorted sound.
I became obsessed for about 2 years trying to recreate his tone, much trial and error.
I’m so glad that you put this video together. It’s great that people also recognize Pete as an incredible bassist as well as vocalist / song writer.
Glad you enjoyed it PTR. It's good to tell Pete's story.
@@WhichBass 🤟🏻💀🤟🏻
I really look up to Peter Steele, not just cause I’m 5’8 💀 but because I’ve always seen myself in him. I’ve always had a freakishly deep natural bass voice and I actually sound very similar to him. I love modifying my basses and painting and designing them. His music has always spoken to me. He’s the reason I started singing and playing bass. I can’t imagine where I’d be without him.
Why don't you run a tribute band? It would be interesting if you sound like him.
I encourage you, dude!
@@MisQot that would be pretty cool ngl. Kinda comica considering how not intimidating I am compared to him. But I want to be the singer and bassist of my own original band, it would be fun to apply my voice to my style of music which is more like Joy Division and more prominent bass. But I would most definitely do covers of Type O Negative songs. Although I’m always worried that even though I sound like him I still wouldn’t be able to do him Justice. But no harm in trying I suppose lol.
Mr. Steele is my only lord and saviour
My recommendations: Tom Araya, Glen Benton, Alex Webster
Great suggestions Andrew, thanks.
He should interview Liberace. Then he might not be the gayest dude in the room
Just like with Lemmy and Cliff, you made another great and informative video on one my favorite late bass players. Keep their memories alive! Sometime in the future I would love to see a Paul Gray video make an appearance on this channel.
Thanks Kevin, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Paul Gray would be a good one for sure!
Paul Gray yes...saw him with The Damned last May in Las Vegas at the punk rock bowling fest
Peter Steele is my favorite bassist and vocalist. I'd suggest doing Mike Starr and Mike Inez from Alice in Chains and Robert Deleo from Stone Temple Pilots.
Great suggestions Jacob, thanks.
@@WhichBass No problem man.
Robert Deleo is an absolute brilliant musician.
This is killer man. Brings me back to my teens in the 90's growing up in NJ just outside NYC. I lived this whole progression. I wanted to be him so bad. Awesome content Alfie 🤘
I think we all wanted to be as hench as Peter for sure haha. Thanks watching Kevin, good to see you again.
I don't even play bass but this video actually had me interested, probably cause I've been listening to Type O Negative for quite some time now. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Tyrone. I'm always happy to hear when non bass players enjoy the video. I really appreciate it!
peter to me will always be a role model in that how massive and muscular he was for a musician and what a briliant bass player and vocalist he was. His Massive look and musical abilities is what i would like to emulate
Some of us got some push ups to do!

You guys have asked for Peter for ages now, I'm so happy to finally bring this video to you and share some information that hasn't been talked about. Enjoy!
IM NOT CRYING 😭,... YOU'RE CRYING!!!
My fiancee asked me "Are you sad Peter died?" I thought about it and said yes. The man suffered with terrible depression and addiction. Went to jail for a while. Got out, found god, got clean, got a new house. Was finally getting his life back on track ... and died. It's a tragedy.
@@WhichBass it is tragic, and he was a hell of a showman! One more album would have been amazing!
Which Bass what makes me happy, is that in the end I think he himself was finally happy.
Words will do no justice as to how I feel about this band.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I´ve been waiting for this!!!!!!
Thanks for watching Ulrik! Glad it found you quickly!
Ahhhh, this is awesome! Great choice. Good to see your work again.
Thank you John, good to see you back!
You made a detailed reconstruction. I've waited this video for 13 years
YES!!!!! I've been waiting for this one, thanks for doing this! Peter was definitely one of the most interesting and unique bass players from the 90's/00's, and I'm glad you shined a bit of light into his rig. This video was awesome, my friend! Keep up the great work!
(Also, I'd really like to video of Rex Brown next!)
Thank you Seth! Glad to finally get the video out there. He was a fascinating player to look at and I'm glad he was suggested.
I never thought this would be the next episode, still happy to see Peter see. Good job!
Thanks Fire! I know it was a long time coming, thanks for hanging in there.
Thank you so much for putting this all together! I learned so much more about Peter's gear and bit more about him in general. Great job on the research that went into this video.
Thanks a bunch UFF, glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for this video! Pete, and Type O is my all time favorite, and i was looking for a video like this for a long time. They are legendary, and i'll always listen to them!

Love Type O, and love and respect Peter. RIP for him and Thank you for that deep review.
Thanks
Андрей, glad you enjoyed it.
Saw Type O Negative at Donington 1996, on the second stage, saw them a couple of times at the London Astoria. Didn't see them again until a festival I went to in the Netherlands around 2006(?), Last time I saw Pete Steel play was with Carnivore in a small club in London (2007 or 08 maybe). I was again at a festival in the Netherlands in 2010 when I heard the news that Pete had died... I was pretty gutted. RIP.
Always been my favourite band since I heard their Black sabbath cover whilst I was still at school. Great video dude.
Thanks Mr 666, glad you enjoyed.
It is great to see you are still at it. Excellent review as well. I was able to see them twice as opening acts. Brilliant band. Thank you and cheers.

Thanks for your research job, man
Type O Negative is such a special band for me and knowing stuff about them is really fulfilling.
DD Verni's gear wolud be awesome!
Thanks for watching Sergio, I'm glad you got something out of the video, that's really great to hear. DD Verni would be a great video thanks for the suggestion!
Pretty cool videos and channel you have here. As a bass player myself of almost 30 yrs., I appreciate it when the spotlight is put on various bassists. Still, if I may make a suggestion here, it would be cool to also focus on awesome bass players from other genres of rock music (if you wish to remain mainly focused on rock music), not just the ones seen regularly (ad nauseam) in many other bass player videos.
The rock bass playing community is made up of a *_LARGE_* pool of talent and yet sadly, the focus is almost always on the same handful of individuals (that do have and deserve their respective places in the spotlight, don't get me wrong) but, it begins to feel limiting and constricting to see the same small number of people over and over again, as if that is all the bass playing community has to offer. Here are some awesome bass players that rarely (if ever) get their due presence in the spotlight:
Steve Severin - Siouxsie & The Banshees
David J - Bauhaus
Craig Adams/Patricia Morrison - The Sisters Of Mercy
Mark Burgess - The Chameleons
Peter Hook - Joy Division
Benjamin Orr - The Cars
Johnette Napolitano - Concrete Blonde
Simon Gallup - The Cure
Jerry Casale - Devo
Dan K. Brown - The Fixx
Frank Maudsley - A Flock Of Seagulls
Carlos D. - Interpol
Martin Glover/Paul Raven - Killing Joke
Jamie Stewart - The Cult
Jerry Only - The Misfits
Anka Wolbert - Clan Of Xymox
Pete Farndon - The Pretenders
Tim Butler - The Psychedelic Furs
Colin Greenwood - Radiohead
Tina Weymouth - Talking Heads
Derek Forbes - Simple Minds
Curt Smith - Tears For Fears
Aimee Mann - 'Til Tuesday
Adam Clayton - U2
And many, many more. The list is endless. Keep up the great work!...
Blimey that's a list that'll keep my busy in isolation thanks Modsleix.

Awesome review, thank you so much for this one!
Thanks Vaultdweller, glad you enjoyed it.
Pretty nice work my friend! Pete is my bass hero for a number of reasons! Late 2000s till he died, he most reliably used 2 Peavey Tour 750 heads with Peavey Max Bass preamps in front of each one. One to the wedge and one to the main cabs. You nailed the pedals...the signal chain is anyone's guess. I have this very set up, FINALLY. As far as signal chain, I use a Boss LS-2 in order to have a split signal with one being clean. Those boss guitar pedals clip all the lows, that's why people assume he had two chains. I combine them into a Peavey 410. If I had two cabs and two heads and preamps I'd run em separate I guess. Tour heads aren't that hard to find...but the preamps sure were!
Thanks for watching Aaron and I appreciate your thoughts on how he connected it all together. That's interesting.
Thank you for putting this video together, and shining a light on a legendary musician and genuine person!💚🖤💚🤘
