I need suggestions! Which bassist do you want to see on the channel next?
Looking for a list of ALL of Roberts gear? Head to the show notes whichbass.co.uk/Roberterttrujillo
You did almost all my bass heroes already but how about: Alex Webster, Billy Sheehan, Orion, Gene Simmons?
Gonna keep my original suggestions of Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, John Entwistle, John Paul Jones and Mike Dirnt but a video on Paul Gray from Slipknot would be really cool as well
Dick lovgren from Meshuggah 😁😁 pls
Fieldy from Korn
Steve Swallow would be awesome, incredibly unique player with electric bass and a plektrum playing only jazz.
Chris Squire.
John Paul Jones.
Great video! That P Bass at 17:09 is likely a tribute to Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy's old bass - hence the 'Jailbreak' logo :)
Thanks Blackbeard! Ah yes indeed it very well could be! Nice catch.
Amazing research has gone into this, well done. Surely Trujillo himself is losing track of the sheer number of instruments at this point? On the opposite end of the spectrum I do appreciate when rich and highly celebrated artists still decide to stick to one or very few instruments as Keith Williams described in one of his videos - you form more of a bond with the instrument. Each to their own though, and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.
Thanks dude, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Hopefully this video will be a good reminder for him haha. Good call!
You're right, I'm sure. RT has probably forgotten about more basses than most people have played during their whole lives.
Once again a terrific video. Lots of time invested in doing all the research I'm sure. I've owned two Zon Sonus's. Their claim to fame (like Modulus, Status) is that the necks are all composite/graphite. So I was surprised when Zon came out with the RT signature but with a wooden neck. Both versions were like that (there was the RT made in California and then the Korean import version). Up until that point all of Joe Zon's basses had the composite necks, so it appears that to accommodate Rob, he produced a Sonus with a wooden neck.
It misses the point of Zon basses in a way..
Thanks dude as always! I remember you telling me about your Zon's I have a lot more appreciate for them now! I bet they sound killer.
That's so weird to take out the graphite ... I don't get it!
Noice, I play bass and I like Robert Trujillo a lot. I like his time as the bassist of Mike Muir’s hardcore punk/crossover thrash metal band known as Suicidal Tendencies🤘🏾🔥. Infection Grooves is awesome and funky. Robert Trujillo is an awesome and amazing bass player, cool songwriter and musician. Metallica’s awesome. Other than that, cool:).
Haha thanks Justin, glad you enjoyed it!
the premiere was fun, would recommend going to the next despite all the talk of kazoos in this one
Haha thanks for hanging out dude, it was good to see you!
I saw Metallica live on the World Magnetic tour and Rob's bass tone was amazing. Always curious what he uses to achieve it besides playing the way he plays.
I think you have outdone yourself on this video. The amount of gear (especially the number of basses) Rob is using since joining Metallica is crazy and to research all of it is even more crazy. Thank you for satisfying our gear head needs.
Haha thanks a lot IrrSinn! It's 100+ basses in total and a hell of a journey. I'm really glad enjoyed the end result 😎
This series of videos is a bass player’s dream. Thank you dude 🤘
Thanks for watching BBG, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great job! As a Long time fan of Robert and having researched a lot over the years I can say you’ve really done your homework. Very accurate video.
The 10-string bass is an MTD. There is a photo on the internet of him using it on Death Magnetic. Also in an old interview he mentions he was in talks with Michael Tobias about building one.
Thanks Perks! Glad you enjoyed the video. Aaahh 10 string MTD I was correct then! That's good to know. If you see the photo please send it my way!
@@WhichBass I finally found the photo! Where would you like me to send it?
I think I would love a video on Tom Araya’s bass rig, or Mike Dirnt.
Great suggestions thanks Max!
Congratulations! Really, really great job, as usual. Mike Inez would be my next one, killer tone.
Thank you Sergi I apprecaite the kind words! Mike Inez is a great suggestion, I'll see what I can do.
I wonder if Rob still has of these basses. would love to see an interview with he and Geddy about their collections.
Where would you put them all?! Ladies have shoe closests. Men have bass closets?!
Dude, you did a LOT of homework on this. Great content! I'm a proud subscriber!!
Thank you Eric! Good to have you on board!
Rob is Definitely one of my favs. Love his funky style and energy he has on stage. I'll never stop requesting Alex Webster for the next vid cause he's my absolute favorite ever, but Paul Gray would be also be fun to see. He's the reason I started playing bass and why I play Warwick basses.
He's a beast on the bass, what a giant. I'll have another crack at Webster, I was a little put off over the winter. See if I can do it again! 😅.
Nicely done Alfie! :) One of the objects you couldn't figure out was an old Peterson strobe tuner I believe? Keep up the wonderful work! - Brent, VT USA
Thanks Brent! He does use Strobe Tuners but unless it's some obscure unit I can't say for sure!
Awesome work as usual Alfie!!! Still got me hooked (and becoming quite the gear nerd myself). I have noticed on Robs Warwick's that he does not have the two piece Warwick bridge on his basses, opting for more of a Leo Quan Bad Ass/Hipshot Kick Ass style. As an up and coming gear snob (just kidding, it dosent matter what you play, all that matters is that you play) I do find this interesting.
And, as is now becoming customary I've gotta push for that dUg Pinnick gear review... One thing I do remember reading about dUg and his gear... when he signed with Schector he had his original Baron fitted with a very specific P pickup made by Seymore Duncan. Again, the gear nerd in me finds it interesting that the godfather of modern rock and metal tone is not running EMG's.
Haha glad you enjoyed the video Scott! That's great to hear. That's really interesting about dUg, you're right about the EMG thing. Everyone leans that way so it's really fascinating to see someone pull away from that. I'll see what I can do! I'm looking for someone new now, good call!
You are awesome, thanks for this series
Thanks Gary! I appreciate that.
This is so sweet man!🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks Josh! Hope you enjoyed it.
I got a Fernandes Tremor for about 200€ and it's my favorite bass when I want to go metal. Extremely comfortable neck.
Good grief that is a very good price. Great stuff!
Great video, thanks for all your hard work. BTW, Rob used the blue Stingray5 for Sad But True at Donington 2004, I remember distinctly
Thanks Dom! Oh is that right! Must have been before the Zons! Good call!
Amazing stuff as always!! For a next bassist if you want big challenge: Joey DeMaio. Other great option would be John Entwistle! Greetings from Poland!
Dzien Dobry! Thanks very much Elcomberro, glad you enjoyed the video. Entwistle is a great suggestion i'll see what I can do!
I'd love to see a Mike Starr tutorial. I've been trying to get a sound close to what was on Dirt but I'm having trouble.
Great suggestion thanks!
Great job once again! So damn thorough. Would love to see you research Faith No More's Billy Gould.
Thanks Aiwa! Glad you enjoyed the video! Billy Gould is a great suggestion, thanks!
yes Biily Gould is a monster who gets overlooked all the time...
Thats some mad work you have put into this video. Very interesting
Thanks Gnutscha. It was a hell of a journey! I hope you enjoyed it.
Thanks for this. I really appreciate your work sir.
Thank you kilhattrick I really appreciate your feedback!
Robert Deleo has been my top bass heros
I’d love to see a video on him and STP!
Great call thanks Kyle!
Those ESP custom basses are "Rumble" models. The old ESP import website had them on there and stock models had an EMG J set with ESP's "Cinnamon" control. I had to hunt through the Wayback Machine archive to find out about it, because the Facebook admin didn't know what the model was called. The green relic Rumble was in the Guitar Hero: Metallica video game and that was the first time I had seen that model.
Oh, that's really interesting thanks for the heads up Bradley, I didn't know that. I'd love a link to that if you still have it!
Good video bro . I've followed Robert since the early 91 Lights Camera Revolution record ... First time insane him live was Ozzfest 1996 with Slayer , Danzig , Sepultura ( with Max and Igor ) , Biohazard , Fear Factory . Inwas 15 and not even a bassist then . Still thought he was incredible . Now he plays for the biggest Rock band ( Former Heavy Metal and Thrash Metal ) in the world ! Not surprised he's kept that gig 19 years.
Thanks Dane, glad you enjoyed it. Rob is an inspiration for sure.
Holy crap you did it, you absolute madman! Thanks
Finally right!
Damn !!! What a forensic job you did !!! My 👏👏👏👏👏 i can tell the amount of hours invested in this video , woooowwww loved it !! Keep the great work , all the best for you and your channel
Thank you Federico! Glad you enjoyed it, it was a lot of work but a lot of fun!
Two fantastic videos well done Alfie. I'm pretty sure the bass you dubbed the Maltese cross is a yamaha trb he used a couple of those
Thanks Andy! Glad you enjoyed them. I think the Maltease Cross was Fernandes, I've got more footage that shows the headstock.
I find it interesting that metallica bass players tend to under utilize their best sounding gear. Jason barely used his Wal and Rob never touched the stingray + mesa rig after the st anger era
That's a great point. I kind of see Jason going from Wal to Alembic - That makes sense. But Rob not so much.
Me: Oh boy part 2
*looks at time stamps*
Me: *sweating*
Hahaha good thing it wasn't one video huh?! 60 minutes in total 😮
I love Trijillo and lobe the Aztec basses they're beautiful
Awesome video!
Thanks Shawn! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey, great video! I think I might have 1-3 bass guitars of Rob's you may have missed or maybe there is no videos or pics of him using them live? I have pics of them, how can I send you the pictures?
Hey Grambino, that's cool I'd love to see! Can you tweet me @Alfiewilliamsuk ?
30:27 Darkglass spotted on the right. Haven't finshed yet. Is there any info on what he uses from them?
I did see that although it wasn't clear what specifically was in the box.
While the color of the yellow-ish pedal actually gives me AW-3, the white pedal on top of the amp behind Rob at 31:10 could also be a Tuner…
(Love these vids; your content is top-tier. Thank you!)
😊
awesome video - thank u
Thanks Mostafa, Glad you enjoyed it!
Would loooooooooooove to see a dual video type-a thingy majig with Paul Gray and V-man from Slipknot
Fantastic video as always tho, great work y'all
Thanks Thor! Great suggestion!
That Aria Pro II wasn't a Cliff Tribute bass, it was the original one played by Cliff, his father (R.I.P Ray) is even sitting off to the side on stage while Rob plays
It'd be interesting to see a Billy Gould video on your channel, Faith No More has covered so much ground musically that I'm very interested in seeing the bass gear Billy has gone through over the years!
Great suggestion thanks LKSF!
@@WhichBass my pleasure, keep up the amazing work! 👍
Love the 'Jailbreak' name drop.
WHAT AN AMAZING RESEARCH!!! THANKS!!!
Thanks Outlaw, glad you enjoyed it.
Apparently Rob goes through his pedal chain on the new Metallica master class. I wonder has anyone compared that to the oldest pedals we know he used on Death Magnetic? Would love to know what the very latest iteration of his (digital) pedal chain is looking like.
Oh really?! I need to see this.
You missed the blue Rickenbacker Rob has. It's never been used live but it has been seen on a handful of Tuning Room videos (from around 2009-2012 I believe). It's rare though.
No no no! Right here ;)
ua-cam.com/video/hR-OCANhFps/v-deo.html
hi, can you tell me what bass is the bright green one, which for example he uses in the video where Kirk and Lars exchange instruments. thank you
I don't know which video you mean. Will need a link. His only green basses are Warwick.
Love these videos. Glad you did Claypool, one of my favorites. Gotta check out Chancellor one - so I can wish for $8K to get myself a Wal!
Id love to know how much all of Robs basses alone have cost. I mean goddamn.
I think the obscure 10-String-bass might be a Michael Tobias Design Custom. The headstock shape and body would fit
That's what I'm thinking! Wish there was more information.
Good stuff man. Can we get a video of Mike Inez one day?
Great suggestion Adam, I'll see what I can do.
Hey for a suggestion for the next bassist to do, how about Scott Reeder? Massively underrated player with a huge tone.
Great suggestion thanks John. I'll see what I can do.
@@WhichBass there’s not a lot out there on him, but I know he started off on a rickenbacker with (I think) a Seymour Duncan rickenbacker bridge pickup, and switched to ibanez atk300’s during recording for and the circus leaves town. Amps are hazier. I think he used sunn beta basses and switched to ampegs, but that’s all I have been able to find
I wish Robert would have kept playing the stingray!! That tone with Metallica would be sik!!
I have no idea how you do this getting all this accurate information! But much respect!! How many hours would you think it took to get this info?
Thanks Jeremy! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Man, I can tell you exactly how long. About 100 hours ⌛
@@WhichBass geez Alfie!! That’s for all that long hrs of work for us!! I really do enjoy these! Hope to see more! Oh I got me another 5502! Another black one!! Probably my favorite bass! Loving the series with Rodney also!
Love Rob’s playing, great rundown as always. As for some other bassists, here are some other suggestions
- Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
- Paul McCartney (The Beatles/Wings)
- John Entwistle (The Who)
- John Deacon (Queen)
- Chris Squire (Yes)
- Mike Dirnt (Green Day)
- Mark Hoppus (Blink-182)
- Cliff Williams (AC/DC)
- Paul Grey (Slipknot)
- Chris Wolstenholme (Muse)
- Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones)
- Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)
- Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
- Shavo Odadjian (System of a Down)
- Colin Greenwood (Radiohead)
Hey Andrew, nice to hear from you! Blimey dude way to keep me busy! Lots of classics I need to look at for sure. Thanks man.
@@WhichBass Yeah, sorry I included so many but I love your videos and you always go such in-depth with each player so I just dumped a bunch of people I’d like to see lol
I would love to see you cover Frank Bellos gear
Great suggestion, thanks Luke.
When you say dual rectifier, is it the guitar amp or is there a bass version?
There's only one type of Dual Rectifier and it's primarily made for guitar. There is no bass version as such.
I thought they had been a consumer version of Rob's Warwick for awhile? They even do a 'budget' version.
I thought so too but I haven't come across it. Needless to say there hasn't been a 2022 model of his bass either.
Shavo Odadjien next!
Great suggestion thanks Shake!
So he plays Bass from different brands most of the time using active jazz-bass single coils. brands like tobias, fernandes, yamaha, warwick and so on. sometimes he uses p-basses (most of the time nashville)...and hardly ever an acoustic bass from warwick. for cliffs memorial he played an aria pro 2 bass to honor him. very good video, but I guess with a "table" it would have been easier to understand and had more structure. But you are following the chorological order. its also okay. But you have a longer video at the end.
Pretty much!
Rob is so precious….and I’m jealous of his knees😂
Video about Peter Hook rig would would be great
Great suggestion thanks Alexander, I'll see what I can do.
I might be wrong but I think you have forgotten the Godin A5 basses Rob has been using from time to time !
My favorite bass is the black one he used in italy during orion
The Warwick ones? He's played Italy a lot you see 😂
can you make apisode about dd.verni of overkill, he has awesome tone.
Great suggestion thanks Hannes!
Paulo from Sepultura
Great suggestion thanks!
One bass you didn't mention is an Erlectrical Guitar Company (yes that's what they're called) 5 string bass with aluminum neck and body. I understand why you left it out though, it never made an appearance live or in the studio. The only evidence of it ever existing is one picture of Rob playing it and a few pictures on instagram
Oh wow really?! This I have to see, if you have a link I need to see this bass!
Good job, but i am disapointed that you forgot the Godin purple bass !
Joey DeMaio would be fun!
Great suggestion thanks Ulrik.
Please Make a video on Mark Hoppus from Blink-182!!!
Great suggestion Knave! I'll see what I can do.
Would love to see a video on Kim Gordon!
Great suggestion Quiksilver thanks!
Not a huge metallica fan, but this was quite interesting.
Thanks James, I'm glad you found some use out of it without liking Metallica! Good stuff.
I have the same Metallica shirt 🤘
Another person of substance, I approve 😎
You should do a rig rundown for Kim Gordon. That would be sick!
Great suggestion thanks Tristan.
Lars: "Thats a pretty fcking mighty bass tone you got right there. Lets play and justice for all songs"
I know I'm 4 months late, but I think a video on the two Alice in Chains bassists (Mike Starr and Mike Inez) would be very interesting!
Great suggestions thanks!
Is that hal looking amp the new John Pettrucci neural dsp?
Anything is possible! But it looks much older than that.
Can’t wait to dig into this video!! What’s your email??

Idk how many guys will agree with me
But
Please do Adam “Nolly” Getgood!!!!!!!!!!!!
He’s an absolutely killer bassist
Do you know, you're the second person to ask. So not many! Haha. I'll see what I can do!
Al Cisneros would be short and sweet, but pretty cool nonetheless.
That man has used more strains of weed than basses
There's no such thing a "short" bass rig 😅. Great suggestion, I'll see what I can do.
Brian Cook, Russian Circles, Sumac.
Great suggestion thanks Dan.
I just bought all this shit and i sound nothing like Robert. 😑. Great vid!!! 😁
