Homemade Airbrush Foundation & Mixing Medium

- (Level: Airbrushers) Want to learn how to make your own longwearing airbrush foundation? Here's how. The first part is making the airbrush mixing medium. From here on out, you can use the medium to create airbrush blush, bronzers, eye shadow, etc. The later part is making airbrush foundation using mineral makeup. I also demonstrated how to test for coverage by applying on my birthmark. If it covers that, Im happy! EnJoy!
Products used:
Glycerin
Bottled Water
Finishing Spray (not setting spray) - I used LiquiSet in this video. You can use Model in Bottle, All Nighter, Skindinavia. Note: FIX Plus is a refresher spray, and not a finishing spray.
To make the homemade airbrush foundation, I used Purely Cosmetics mineral foundation in CORNSILK as my colorant. But any mineral foundation brand that matches your skin tone works.

TIP: In this video I added finishing spray to the mixture, so that I dont have to spray later. You can use this trick to your already existing airbrush foundation, so that its built-in to the product. One less item off your airbrush kit.

I really appreciated this video. I did not use the glycerin and instead used vitamin E oil.which worked much better for my skin and no finishing spray for my mixing medium. I mixed it with Cover Girl liquid foundation to make the airbrush foundation. I also made my airbrush blush makeup by mixing beet juice and the mixing medium together and the blush stayed all day and looked fantastic. Thank you again for this video. It really inspired me.
I think the only 29 dislikes you have are because they own a spray foundation company, cause I love this video and you are SO great at explaining everything that I don't even need to ask cause your so great at explaining and making sure you answer even questions only a few may ask... thanks for your videos I love them

Use empty prescription bottles- they won't leak. To mix I use the small metal plugs that go into shelf sides that hold up the shelf. Cheap!
He starts at 6:07 for mixing medium = 1 part glycerin, 2 parts water, (& 1 part finishing spray- optional) in your bottle, shake shake shake.
He starts at 12:12 for foundation = 1 part color, 2 parts mixing medium, shake shake shake. You can use mineral powder for color.

Okay so I just did it according to directions and with the color and mixing medium mixture..it has separated into some very weird looking materials... 🙄🤦♀️ I could’ve just bought the dang expensive already made stuff by now!! Ugh! I’m beyond frustrated at this point! Why do the people on the videos I watch make it look so easy!?!? It’s not!!! If I put this goop in my airbrush, I will never get it cleaned out.. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️

This is probably one of the best tutorials on YTube. Thanks for getting to the point, giving excellent details and all the necessary info on products needed to make this. It was very smart to show the results using it against your birthmark. I have seen a few other tutorials and all people do is spray the same color on their skin and the audience has to assume it works. With your tutorial you prove it! Excellent job.
I did a little experimentation myself and will say this; DO NOT crush / grind pressed powder and use it as your mineral makeup substitute. I used a Sephora pressed powder and mixed it with the mixing medium. It clogged my airbrush and the foundation color was darker after it mixed with the liquids. After I cleaned the airbrush gun, I used MICABELLA mineral eyeshadow with the mixing medium and it worked. You definitely gotta use loose mineral powder in my opinion. The minerals are probably smaller and can pass through the airbrush gun nozzle.
I will head to ULTA tomorrow and buy a loose mineral foundation and other fun colors. I'm super excited it finally worked out for me. Thank you very much Koren, you are super AWESOME. One small eyedropper-size foundation costs around $15 alone on Ebay. I spent that much on the Glycerin, 10 eyedroppers and the Liquiset. Now I can make all the airbrush makeup I want! I am very excited!

I airbrush my wife's make up for her every morning. I don't see how I would need so much makeup. 20 drops total of foundation and blush is all I use. Good how to video, if it works. Airbrush makeup is the best.

I bought my glycerin at the cake decorating store (Wilton). It doesn't say what percentage it is and it doesn't have an expiration date. Can I use that glycerin?

I am still doing my research! I have ordered a three speed compressor for self tanning, now I'm checking out about the make up part, and you have been a to of help! I have a bunch of raw beauty products the I got and never made anything with but this I am going to try! It would be a lot cheaper and better the make them! i don't want parabens in my products! I found on company that said they did not use them, but when you look at the ingredients there they are! Thank You I will be watching more of your videos!!!

This video came at such the perfect time. I was just given a luminess air kit 3 days ago. So this will come in handy once I run through the foundation it came with. It was a gift and out of all the foundations/bronzers/blushes it came with, only one foundation of the 5 is in my shade. I'm also not a big fan of the bronzer and blush shades it came with for my skintone.

I made my foundation just as you said, but I find that it is really oily and doesn't completely "dry" on my face. What would you suggest I do?
can you use any foundation to make it in to airbrush foundation or do you have to use powder?

Koren, does this foundation work ok with water based compressors? Does the glycerin affect it at all? I know you can't use silicon foundations but just wanted to know if the glycerin would be a problem!! Thank you!
You need a compressor that you can control the pressure. Face is about 15 psi. Eyes, no more than 6 psi. etc. Canned air has a real strong psi.

places like The Container Store sells 1oz bottles with dropper tips. Drugstores sells empty bottles in the 'travel' size isle.

you can buy the ball bearings from a hardware store or something like that and the bottles you can try a craft store or in a grocery in the travel section, but the best way is buying them online. Hope that helped :)

I know this video is so old I probably won't even get a response but I followed your steps and I use L'Oreal true match foundation instead of mineral foundation and I just don't feel like it's working I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I also feel like my Foundation is spread out inside the bottle .. if anyone had this problem and found a solution.. that'd be awesome
