Here's something to encourage everyone to clean their brushes all the time. I have seen a used makeup brush under a microscope, and... just clean your brushes. LOL
Also have been coming back for years. 16 years ago my fav foundation Mac NW 13 was $17, now its $45 (inflation right) but the money I've saved on make up brush cleaner and brushes in general has helped. My brushes from back then have held up so well compared to ones I've bought recently since quality has been declining in everything. Thank you so much and hope you are well! @@NSBoxall
Can I just say this is the BEST makeup cleanser I've ever used. I just made it and cleansed my brushes.. they never looked better. I did use witch hazel over alcohol and was fine. Gracias Enkore!
Hi Tish - yes deep-clean involves warm water, baby shampoo and damp sponge. Lather it good, again in sweeping motion not circular. Then rince throughly until no trace of suds in the water - again make sure not to get the ferrule/handle wet. To sanitize and condition, simply dip in the Brush Cleanser solution, squeeze excess liquid out, lay flat to dry.
Hello Lu - thanks for the questions. The brush cleanser I made is mostly water. So, no need to rinse with water after. Some people do, so its up to you. Mac cleanser is the same. In the deep cleaning using shampoo, I used a brush cleanser to spray a couple times to disinfect because shampoo doesnt do that. You can also use watered down alcohol to disinfect also.
yes completely safe if you look at the ratio, its really mostly water. I only used the ingredients that is important to the brush. Dish soap as detergent to clean oils and makeup residue in bristles. Conditioner to condition the bristles, much like conditioning hair. Alcohol to disinfect and sanitize, etc.
Thank you, Koren! Your advices are being followed by all make up artists in small country Latvia, in Europe! And my friends MUA in Russia too! We love you!
hey jen -yeah you can use rev osm. water. its not the same as distilled but works just as good. distilling water is boiling the water, the steam is collected, leaving the salts and calciums behind. Rev Osm is a form of filtration.
That's pretty cool that you prefer Palmolive for the detergent, because I've always felt that for my dishes anyway, Palmolive worked the best-IMO it cuts grease way better than Dawn but doesn't seem as harsh on your hands. My friend washes windows on the side for extra money & has his own recepie for window cleaner that he swears by, & part of it involved Palmolive. It just cleans really well.
There's a few signs, depending on the finish of the shadow. Usually, you'll notice a color change. Vibrant colors turns washed. Look closely on the surface too if there are staining - bacteria causes those stains. Also, they will eventually dry up within that time, crack and shatter. Unlike lip products, no noticeable odor or anything.
sure it does! Id advise adding something that conditiions the bristles, which a lot of antibacterial soap does not have. So spray-in hair conditioners are ideal for that.
I’ve been using Koren´s home made brush cleanser, and I adore it! It is great to sanitize my brushes and it’s gentle with the bristles. Fabulous! The best recipe ever, thank you so much Koren
i love this being a single mother on a budget really has an effect on being able to afford some of the brushes and brush cleaners. thanks so much. i am definately trying to become one of those women who wear makeup regardless of if she goes somewhere or not
hey mnelson - 1) Yes, thats what i do for the large brushes. 2) Its always good to shake any liquid mixtures a little just to get the conetents mixed. 3) Yes, rubbing alcohol is what I used.
yeah! like I told Rosebud, I have some in a spray bottle to use on my larger brushes. It's really watered down that I dont personally find a need a water rinse.
hey 22fiyaa - dettol have isopropyl alcohol. It is used as antiseptic. Mixed with castor oil, pine oil, caramel and water. It should work, you WILL just have to rinse well, as your brushes will resist picking up makeup due to the OILS.
hey Gez - some pigments will stick really good in your white brushes. If thats the case, I usually dip the brush in the mixture, then dip in drop shampoo/dish detergent and rub the bristles to clean. Then back to mixture to rinse and clean further.
good question jenny - I dont think I have any thats past that long, but I know that they really dry up and crumble, some gets crusty, some fades and changes colors.
i just made this solution with a substitution of the conditioner (used conditioner you wash out) and I absolutely love it. It works great, probably works better with the leave in conditioner but nonetheless, I am really pleased. Thank you EnKore. You are the best.
tap water contains calcium and that forms crystals when stored. So if youre making a bottle of cleanser that you're storing for weeks, distilled or bottled water is best to use so you dont get that calcium buildup. Spray on is better because it doesnt solidify/curd when mixed wil alcohol.
Hey gezebel - yeah it is! I was going to B2M it! Like yourself, I go through cleansers like bottled water! So, it can get pretty costly. That's why I researched what's the essential components and just concocted my own BC. I still use bought ones depending on the job I do. Cinema Secrets for runways and MAC BC for weddings if the bride requested MAC products and such.
hey Jkay- yeah definitely try using a non-bleach dishwashing liquid. Bleach is a harsh chemical, and I only recommend it rarely on white bristled brushes that has stains caused by makeup. So look into Palmolive brand as it has built in conditioners that soften hands.
hey Krystal - YES, go by the expiration on the WATER BOTTLE! believe it or not, bottled water expires. Usually within 6 months to a year. You dont need to rinse as the mixture is mostly water.
hi hyns - the cleanser is gentle enough to use every time you use the brush. I advise people to do quick-clean at least every other day, and deep clean using shampoo and warm water at least once a week.
Hey Koren, Thanks so much!! I just made this and my brushes feel great. Clean & soft...I personally think this is better than anything I have bought in the store. I just discovered your videos and they are wonderful. Thanks for giving us such creative & interesting information! :)
You can definitely try dissolving your Cream Conditioner to liquid. Some do nicely, and some doesnt depending on the conditioner. A little shake to mix doesnt hurt, so sure, shake bottle before next use.
cant wait to make this, seems very sufficient for cleaning and disinfecting my make-up brushes! Will be very easy to spray this on a wet brush, lather and rinse!
sure, you can shake it before each use. Conditioner is important specially to the natural hair brushes. Much like your hair, it needs conditioner to keep the bristles from becoming dry, becoming brittle, and break.
oh absolutely! more money to buy makeup :) I actually bought a few bottles before i discovered the mixture ingredient. So trying to finish that, then just mix my own from there on.
the lotion leave in tend to curd when mixed wil alcohol. So, liquid leave-in conditioner works best. A lot of people that has made this homemade one prefers it as it really cleans and conditions brushes. MAC's also good, I use it.
hey addz -see if you can liquify if. The problem is regular conditioner turns to curds when mixed with alcohol. Leave in spray conditioner doesnt do that. Experiment with it, and see if it will curd, then its no good.
hey Mozgirl -- the solution is MOSTLY water, so I did not find it needing to be rinsed. Same thing with MAC bc, some MAC counters recommend to rinse, but I never had to either, and my brushes has not experienced any shedding or ratting. Some people do. I dont. So different preferences.
hey LilVanesa - spray it on the bristles, then brush the bristles on a piece of paper towel sweeping motion back and forth, spray some more if needed until all the makeup residue are gone and a clean area of the paper towel looks clean after you swipe the brush on it.
a lot of people use it - but its drying to the bristles. So what most do is use some spray conditioner so that the bristles doesnt dry up after using hand soaps.
hey maje - just read the thread, some people tried this and it does work just like MACs - it doesnt dry instantly, but pretty quick, id say within 2 minutes. Again, the key is the 91% alcohol as it dries faster than 70%
yeah 100% is fine, you can dilute that to make any percentage by adding water. like 7parts alcohol with 3 parts water makes it a 70% solution. etc. But you can use it AS-IS in the cleanser, as the recipe really is mostly water.
yeah, its rubbing alcohol. I go by the expiration date on the bottled water, and thats how I usually determine how long the cleanser is good for. If you use plain tap water, 2 weeks.
Yes sure! I have some in spray bottle as well. Actually I prefer to spray my LARGE brushes - as opposed to dipping them as they suck up all the cleanser when you dip. So- yeah try spraying!
thank you thank you thank you! I'm so happy that I can make my own cleanser now instead of buying it. It also saves me a trip to the store. I love this!
it will still work in cleaning your brush, but you need a conditioner to condition the bristles. Other wise, they will turn brittle and start breaking/shedding.
you can try and liquify regular conditioner, then add to the mixture. Just hope it doesnt curd up when its mixed with alcohol. If it doesnt, then great!
the shelf life on eyeshadows is 2 years. some companies says 2-4 years, but base period is 2 years. So even if you're not using them or havent even opened them they'll expire that time. So, perhaps you can trade them. Someone might have a use for them and you might have a use for some that others do not use.
i personally dont need to rinse, as the mixture is mostly water. Some people prefer rinsing further. It doesnt cause seperating, but al ways just give it a couple shake before use.
hey Mandi - I found that lotion (reg) conditioner curds once mixed with alcohol in the mixture. If you can liquify your regular conditioner, it may just work. Experiment with it.
hey neon luv - the mixture is mostly water, and I dont find it necessary to rinse. Some people do, everyone have their preferences. But its completely ok not to.
its pretty much the same, elevensmiles. However, cleanSER have detergents, like shampoo. You can tell as it suds or foam when you're cleaning the brush. MAC cleanser have a little detergent, much like baby shampoo.
hey dancie - i recommend at least every other day to do quick-clean using brush cleanser, and the once a week for deep cleaning using gentle shampoo and warm water. I have videos on both method of cleaning. Look it up in my vids list and I hope that helps ya.
@1LeiaPrincess You don't have to wash it with water if you dont want to, the alcohol evaporates in a couple seconds so after your brushes are dry they're completly safe to use:) Hope that helped
Hi Aqualina. I have tried Brush Off before, and I'm not sure if it's just the bottle I got, but it made my brush bristles kinda Oily! So, the next time I used the brush, it was having trouble picking up makeup as the bristles was covered with whatever it is in Brush Off that resists the makeup.
you do quick cleaning using the cleanser everytime you use your brushes, or at the very least every other day. Then do a deep clean using baby wash/shampoo once a week.
you can get alcohol at any drugstore theyre like 99 cents to $1.50 a bottle. Quick Clean using Cleanser and Deep Clean using Baby Wash/Shampoo are 2 seperate things.
This actually works VERY well. I just made it with 70% alcohol, purified drinking water, 1 tbs of infusium 23, and 1 tbs (J&J baby shampoo, Giovanni tea tree shampoo, and Ajax dish soap mixed all equal parts to make 1 tbs). I cleaned one white bristle brush with Mac's cleaners n another one with this cleanser and it work just ass good. It got the bristles whiter than the Mac cleanser.
Oh my goodness. That you SOOOO much for this! I clean my brushes pretty often and I'm so tired of spencing money on brush cleaner all the time. I'm going to try this! :D
anything that will condition the bristles very important part - doesnt have to be leave-in, but that is best. Bristles will become brittle and break, so conditioner is good for it.
well, in addition to the vegetable dye, there is also a coat of starchy stuff on the bristles to keep the brush's shape. So you want to wash that off on new brushes.
so cool! every time i watch an enKore video i get the urge to try it out immediately, so while im watching this, im itching to walk into my kitchen and start making this!
-Redken All Soft Shampoo (use a clear shampoo, this left the water cloudy) -Beyond the Zone Split Mender (not a good leave-in conditioner to use. Even though I tried to use less because it was thick and concentrated, it didn't dissolve) -Dawn Advance Power dish detergent (was ok) Good luck and when I do get appropriate ingredients I will give this another try!
It’s been 13 years since I first found this tutorial and I still come back and double check my measurements on occasion 😁 Thanks for being awesome!
here I am again, too!
I miss his videos, I learned how to make my own lipstick yeeeears ago thanks to him

this is really good. I like how you give detailed instructions as well as caveats for what happens if you do something incorrectly.
Can I just say this is the BEST makeup cleanser I've ever used. I just made it and cleansed my brushes.. they never looked better. I did use witch hazel over alcohol and was fine. Gracias Enkore!

Your recipe is the bomb! You are saving me a fortune, and my brushes are the cleanest I've ever seen. Bravo!!!

its fine, its really diluted as the recipe is mostly water. I never find the need to rinse them. Some people prefer to, so what ever you prefer.

hey jenny - yeah use some mixing medium to moisten the brush, and using a primer like paint or paint pot will also help.
hey mnelson - 1) Yes, thats what i do for the large brushes. 2) Its always good to shake any liquid mixtures a little just to get the conetents mixed. 3) Yes, rubbing alcohol is what I used.
hey Jenny - yes definitely use a spray bottle. I use one for my larger brushes so it doesnt soak up the mixture.
yeah! like I told Rosebud, I have some in a spray bottle to use on my larger brushes. It's really watered down that I dont personally find a need a water rinse.
hi Pinklilstar - yeah its fine. The mixture is mostly water, so I dont find it necessary to rinse. Spray bottles are great for the larger brushes.
I used this mixture last night. And it was like magic! This is amazing.

OOOOhhh shiny bristles! definitely a plus in my book if you ask me :)

Great video. I got the winter green scented alcohol and it gives my cleaner and my brushes a crisp refreshing scent. Thanks so much!
i saw this about 2 yrs ago when u put it up and i still come back every few month to make a new batch :) thanks for the great videos! xx

I simply looked up the basic ingredients of a brush cleanser. Mainly used ingredients that sanitize, disinfects, conditions and cleanse the bristles.

everytime I use them! I used to not to, but since I saw a used brush under a microscope, I make sure I clean them as I go.
I made your cleaner and it is great !!! I really liked the way you explained every product and why it is important to use in the cleaner.
I just made some of this on my brushes. I put it in a left over mason jar, which I plan to decorate! :D Thanks for the wonderful money saving tip!
hey LilVanesa - spray it on the bristles, then brush the bristles on a piece of paper towel sweeping motion back and forth, spray some more if needed until all the makeup residue are gone and a clean area of the paper towel looks clean after you swipe the brush on it.
as in paintbrushes but used with makeup products? YES.
a lot of people use it - but its drying to the bristles. So what most do is use some spray conditioner so that the bristles doesnt dry up after using hand soaps.
Palmotlive dishsoap has multiple conditioners that is gentle and great for your hands, so its gentle as well for the brushes.
Regular lotion-type conditioners will turn curds like cottage cheese when mixed with alcohol, so liquid spray-on kind is really best.
hey maje - just read the thread, some people tried this and it does work just like MACs - it doesnt dry instantly, but pretty quick, id say within 2 minutes. Again, the key is the 91% alcohol as it dries faster than 70%

thank you thank you thank you! I'm so happy that I can make my own cleanser now instead of buying it. It also saves me a trip to the store. I love this!
hey Thedropkicker - anything that conditions hair in liquid form is prefered. Creams and lotions will CURD when mixed with the other ingredients.
it will still work in cleaning your brush, but you need a conditioner to condition the bristles. Other wise, they will turn brittle and start breaking/shedding.
you can try and liquify regular conditioner, then add to the mixture. Just hope it doesnt curd up when its mixed with alcohol. If it doesnt, then great!
you always sound so bright and fun. very informative video, you make it them so fun to watch.
Thank you.I have been referring back to this for 2 yrs already.I use this cleanser.Thank you!!
the shelf life on eyeshadows is 2 years. some companies says 2-4 years, but base period is 2 years. So even if you're not using them or havent even opened them they'll expire that time. So, perhaps you can trade them. Someone might have a use for them and you might have a use for some that others do not use.
hey mindy - try to find some if you can. The conditioner is important as the bristles will turn brittle and break if not conditioned.
some people uses gentle hand soap. some these days even have antibacterial and built in moisturizers. Its best to really select a gentle formula.
hey blue - try and liquify it first. The problem with regular conditioner is that it will curd when mixed with alcohol. If yours doesnt then, yeay!
theres a few people that has done it that way, and worked for them. definitely give it a try.
i personally dont need to rinse, as the mixture is mostly water. Some people prefer rinsing further. It doesnt cause seperating, but al ways just give it a couple shake before use.
Its lind up in the editing room! So keep watching!
hey Mandi - I found that lotion (reg) conditioner curds once mixed with alcohol in the mixture. If you can liquify your regular conditioner, it may just work. Experiment with it.

Palmolive dishwashing liquid/soap - its gentle for the hands with built in conditioners leaving your hand soft and smooth.
I used this on brushes that I just cleaned with my MAC brush cleaner. You wouldn't believe the filth that came off of them! This stuff is amazing!
@1LeiaPrincess You don't have to wash it with water if you dont want to, the alcohol evaporates in a couple seconds so after your brushes are dry they're completly safe to use:)

Awesome! Ive been breaking out recently on my forehead and cheeks because of my makeup brushes so this is great! Thank you so much!
you do quick cleaning using the cleanser everytime you use your brushes, or at the very least every other day. Then do a deep clean using baby wash/shampoo once a week.
Thanks for the recipie for cleaning my brushes! You have definitley saved me some money :)
you can get alcohol at any drugstore theyre like 99 cents to $1.50 a bottle. Quick Clean using Cleanser and Deep Clean using Baby Wash/Shampoo are 2 seperate things.

any gentle shampoo works - as far as conditioner, if its lotion/cream, most will curd in the mixture. So liquid spray-on kind is more ideal.
I use Sebastian AWAPUHI conditioner spray. You can use pretty much any liquid leave-in conditioner.
Oh my goodness. That you SOOOO much for this! I clean my brushes pretty often and I'm so tired of spencing money on brush cleaner all the time. I'm going to try this! :D
anything that will condition the bristles very important part - doesnt have to be leave-in, but that is best. Bristles will become brittle and break, so conditioner is good for it.
ok I have watched a few of your videos now and you are so clever and creativity! Keep up the great work and thank you!
Agustine - if you prefer to. I find that the mixture is mostly water and I dont need to rinse.
well, in addition to the vegetable dye, there is also a coat of starchy stuff on the bristles to keep the brush's shape. So you want to wash that off on new brushes.
hey, Marieke - the mixture I used in total measurements filled an old empty brush cleaner bottle, and its 233 mL, which is 233 cc.
so cool! every time i watch an enKore video i get the urge to try it out immediately, so while im watching this, im itching to walk into my kitchen and start making this!
I look at the expiration date of the ingredients I used. Which ever expired first, I use that date as the expire date for the homemade mixture.
its from the Broadway Show Soundtrack - it was sung by Chester White
liquid is best - creamy lotion conditioners will curd when mixed with alcohol. So, any liquid conditioners will do.
you can liquify regular conditioner - otherwise it wil curd when mixed with alcohol.
I made this brush cleanser and it's awesome... I love it!!! I really can save a lot of money with it...thanks Koren!!! x
I believe in Ireland they are more commonly refered to as Surgical Spirit. Its also called Isoprophenol.
This cleanser is so amazing Love love love it I just cleaned my brushes and they look so great and are so clean!! THANKS! :)
-Redken All Soft Shampoo (use a clear shampoo, this left the water cloudy)
-Beyond the Zone Split Mender (not a good leave-in conditioner to use. Even though I tried to use less because it was thick and concentrated, it didn't dissolve)
-Dawn Advance Power dish detergent (was ok)
Good luck and when I do get appropriate ingredients I will give this another try!
