Biology teacher here, most of the stuff in this video is great! I just have a very small nitpick. You say in the video that there are 7 different levels of hierarchy in terms of classifying living things, but there are actually 8 of them. The extra one is even broader than kingdom and is called domain; the 3 domains are Eukarya, Bacteria, and Archaea. Previously, the organisms now in Archaea had been considered a type of Bacteria, but they were so intensely distinct and different that it needed even broader classification. Eukarya is the only domain with multicellular life; that’s just how many dang microscopic boys there are. All of the actually relevant information is great though!

Trumbeak could be referencing a civil war Bugler. They would accompany artillery and infantry alike, and would play the bugle to intimidate enemies and keep their allies nerves down, and it’s beak also serves as a rifle (which is in this case automatic, but both lines could also be referencing the Gatling gun of the very soon after era of the Wild West), which fits the civil war soldier motif. Tuocannon obviously fits this same design, as it is literally a cannon and has a very stern militant look to its design, as opposed to the less stern but still serious look of Trumbeak

I was actually surprised that woodpeckers and toucans were related and it made me appreciate the idea of going from Pikipek to Toucannon even if I was a bit curious on why it wasn’t Fire/Flying when reading the Pokedex entries.
I’d definitely be down for a Pikipek regional variant that has its final evolution stay a Woodpecker. Maybe for a region based on an area like Canada where there aren't any toucans or as part of the Kaskadian region

I feel like there is an underlying theme of warfare in the line as trumbeak is a bugler, tucannon having the expression of an old general, the line being able to shoot seeds like bullets. I have also noticed that in the anime pikipek live in larger nests than other route one birds, except for wingull, and there was only one tucannon in charge of the flock.
It would be fitting in playing into the invasive species part of the lore too as the Hawaiian islands were taken by the US (and UK) military and now play significant roles in national defense.

Oh that's what you mean, still true, at least in the anime since that's also where you pulled the toucannon from. That's, heck, why Ash gets rid of his Pidgeot, to protect a flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto from the flock of Spearow that attacked him and Pikachu, and the Fearow was specifically the one he threw a rock at. So those 2 at the very least do live in flocks with their later evos, Taillow not sure on, it just seems like a bird that would for similar reasons to Pidgey, and Staraptor is proven to yes leave the flock because they're edge birds that like I said go lone wolf. No idea on the other ones though, and I have no proof one way or another, even for Hoothoot or again Taillow, but owls in general don't go in flocks so highly doubt Noctowl hang around Hoothoot too much.

Toucannon should have got one of two things:
    1. Got into a Switch game
    2. Got its own Z-move: Blinding Beakburst. This is a Flying-type move that is an upgrade to Beak Blast. It inflicts damage, and leaves every opposing Pokémon with a burn.

"That said, the State has a massive invasive species problem. Since colonization, over 4000 different plants and animals have been introduced to the islands’, out-competing native species, some of which unfortunately have gone extinct. While this is of course horrible, it did not go unnoticed by gamefreak. I mean, the main plot of the gen 7 games is directly tied to ultra beasts, which are basically just invasive pokemon from another dimension after all. And its not jus the ultra beasts, either. Even the yungoos and grubbin lines, which are based on the mongoose and Cyclommatus stag beetle, aren’t natively found in Hawaii, but rather were BROUGHT there… which also fits the invasive species theme, So I suppose Gamefreak just used the toucan since it's a tropical-looking bird."
A part of the script I thought was very interesting and worth capturing, since it only flashes by in the captions

Why does a fish become an octopus? A gnat into a moth? A fish into an Eel or Sea Serpent? An ant into a dragonfly? A clam into an eel? A corgi into a greyhound?

    • @IllusiveEv
      @IllusiveEv 2 роки тому +1

"An ant into a dragonfly" is this referring to Flygon? The whole line is based on antlions, nothing to do with ants or dragonflies (or lions), so they make thematic sense with eachother. I agree with the rest though, except Remoraid and Octillery, they're a gun that becomes a cannon, again, it makes thematic sense.

Hey, Lockstin! You should do a video explaining why different evolution methods work as they do, especially trade evolutions (and possibly friendship evolutions and held-item evolutions). You already did one for Karrablast/Shelmet to Escavalier/Accelgor, but I think others could use some explaining.
Basically, as I understand it/theorize it, when traded, the Pokémon being traded, any items they’re holding, and the ball they’re in become digitized and then sent to the other trainer, with them passing each other halfway along the way to their new trainer. The process is imperfect, however, which can cause changes to occur.
This is easiest to see with held-item trade evolutions, where the separation between the Pokémon and the held item dissolves, leading to the item being incorporated into the Pokémon. For example, Onix and Scyther become mixed with a held Metal Coat, essentially having the Metal Coat coating their bodies, leading them to evolve into Steelix and Scizor, respectively. The dragon DNA from a held Dragon Scale mixes with Seadra, causing its hidden dragon elements to be strengthened to the point that it gains the Dragon type and evolves into Kingdra. Rhydon gets covered by a held Protector to become Rhyperior. Porygon-being a Pokémon made of digital data already-has its code be mixed with the code contained on a held Upgrade to become Porygon2, which, in turn, has its code be mixed with the code contained on a held Dubious Disk to become Porygon-Z. And so on.
Admittedly, some are a bit more confusing than others. Take Politoed for example. To evolve Poliwhirl into Politoed, it must be traded while holding a King’s Rock. However, there’s nothing about Politoed’s design or Dex entries that would explain why this would happen. Comparably, though not the same, is Slowpoke to Slowking (non-Galarian). While the Dex entries and design do make this make _some_ sense, they also confuse the matter. According to canon, if a Slowpoke wears a King’s Rock on its head, a Shellder will bite there instead of its tail, causing it to evolve into Slowking (with a crown-like spiral Shellder on its head) instead of Slowbro (with a spiral Shellder on its tail). However, while this would explain why a King’s Rock would cause Slowpoke to evolve into Slowking _somehow,_ it doesn’t explain why trading would be necessary. Why can’t it be used like an evolution stone, or for a held-item level-up evolution? I feel like that would make a lot more sense. Then there’s Clamperl to Huntail/Gorebyss. While it’s easy to see why a Deep Sea Tooth would result in a Huntail and why a Deep Sea Scale would result in a Gorebyss generally speaking, why a _Clamperl,_ of all things, evolve into these two Pokémon makes a lot less sense. If it was another eel or eel-like Pokémon instead of Clamperl, it’d make a lot more sense, but aside from being ocean creatures, Clamperl has nothing in common with its evolutions, which is quite unlike other trade and held-item + trade evolutions.

Personally, I don’t think *EVERY* Pokémon has to be inspired by an animal or creature from the continent or island the game is set in
Pokémon is a fantasy game and well, fantasy should come first, real life inspiration and accuracy is just a great thing to mix with it, but shouldn’t take top priority imo as, that wouldn’t be fun for the people making the game if they had such a tight leash that prohibits their creativity like that
The reason why Toucannon is in Alola is most likely simply, it’s a popular tropical bird, and the game is set in a tropical region
    It just fits
i guess as long as it fits the themes of the region and isn’t too out of place, it shouldn’t matter what it’s based on
Why is Komala in Alola tho?

We won’t even get into pearl harbor here… And the fact that Hawaii is a military base hot spot due to it’s unique geographic location which makes it perfect for staging military opperations.

Aloloa is not Hawaii. it is BASED on Hawaii, but it is not Hawaii itself. (also Pikapek and Toucannon are not directly woodpeckers / toucans). So major differences such as native wildlife can be expected.
