      🙋🏾‍♀️🙋🏾‍♀️ Hi guys!
      I thought I'd drop a line or two and
      try to answer Steven's question about
      a cure. My thoughts on the subject has always
      been one of two ways:
      (1) Make/Synthesize it to be airborne
      (2) Drop biodegradable payloads
      (that open on impact) into all
      of what we consider "fresh-water-sourses"
      That's what my little limited brain could come up
      with anyway☺😊
      Anyway, thank y'all for continuing to put up

      If you skipped the post-credit, 'behind the ep,' they showed what went into getting the town, to look like the game. At first, I thought that town was built for the show, & I was blown away! EASY EMMY! For all that work, to make a set look so rea!? Incredible!
      LOL! Actually, it IS a real town! No wonder it looked so real..🤔😳😵‍💫
      Either way, it was beautiful, much like the rest of the show... Every other scene looks like a postcard!
      THIS SHOW IS GOING TO SWEEP AT THE NEXT EMMYS!!
      Too bad for poor Saul, he had a great run, right up to the last episode. Absolutely worthy of several awards for their work in their final season.
      BUT...Now?!
      6 episodes into season 1, from a new show based on a VIDEO GAME, is blowing everyone away, in the best way...By making it about people, & their relationships, like most shows. Instead of trying to make it like the game.
      I don't remember why I started raving about 'The Last of Us,' but here I am. Banger of a show, & it's gonna wipe up, all the rest...

      Anyone who thinks this incompetent show is good are really really simple. poor chemistry due to miscasting. Terrible writing. Changes from the game that were not needed and any things they try to keep the same they deliver so poorly. Stop praising the mediocre show you two simpletons. ffs 😂 You’re part of the reason why we keep getting crap “entertainment. The voice acting in the game has more nuance and is better delivered than the acting in the show. And the things that could have been great, the tense action they completely neglected. Seriously awful show.

    Joel isn't having a heart attack, at least, not in the "cardiac arrest" sort of way.
    He's having anxiety attacks, because he has discovered he genuinely cares about Ellie.
    Now, Joel's afraid, for the same reason Bill learned to fear.

    Pedro Pascal really owned this episode. The scene where he's emotionally pleading for Tommy to take Ellie to the fireflies because he's afraid of getting Ellie killed if he took her himself was heartbreakingly beautiful. I feel like this was better than the game's version where he aggressively told Tommy to take Ellie and he shoved Tommy for saying no because the show's version had more emotional depth.

    This episode is fantastic, but the best thing for me is the couple at the start. So wholesome. Just the way the husband asked, "You made him soup?", only to have the wife say, "Yeah, I did. It's cold out." Like it's just typical for the old woman to make soup for folks who break in and hold you and your husband up at gunpoint as long as they don't hurt you and it's cold (and therefore soup weather). And I loved your reaction to them ("You know that'd be us, right?"). Relationship goals.

      Also Steven, you hit upon a point that I've considered a lot since playing the game, and from discussions with folks online regarding Joel's decision.
      *SPOILER WARNING*
      -
      -
      -
      -
      -
      You're absolutely right. Even assuming that the Fireflies were to use Ellie to create some sort of inoculation to the cordyceps infection -- if they were able to use her body to create a working "vaccine" against the infection, that somehow had a 100% success rate in all those inoculated with the "cure" in Ellie -- there would be no system in place to effectively distribute the inoculation nationwide (certainly not worldwide). There aren't pharmaceutical factories ready to create doses of the inoculation to distribute. There would be no way to replicate the results of a successful inoculation on a large scale.
      And let's say -- just for the sake of argument -- that they could. That somehow, FEDRA were to get involved, and get those factories that are currently manufacturing bullets and pills (as mentioned in episode 1) to manufacture a working inoculation. What then? How would you get the word out that there's a "cure"? Over the shortwave and CB radios? To have whatever remnants of humanity come flocking to one or two destinations nationwide in order to get the inoculation, bringing with them whatever diseases humanity has developed within their small colonies and outposts over the last 20 years? Even discounting the idea that they would certainly cause those infected with cordyceps to flock right to the door of those holding the cure, you're talking about people bringing in strains of influenza and other viral infections that one group might have grown accustomed to but another group won't have been exposed to for the last 20 years. It would be akin to giving out smallpox blankets. That alone would wipe out a good portion of the humans still left alive.
      And would it solve anything really? There would still be the living infected to deal with. The swarms of infected who -- yes, wouldn't infect those inoculated against cordyceps -- would still tear those inoculated people apart trying to spread the fungus as they've evolved themselves to do. It isn't like the immunity would act as camouflage; Ellie herself still has to worry about the infected wanting to attack her, the same way that the infected would attack anyone else with her immunity to cordyceps.
      So yeah. The Firefly's plan was doomed from the start. And even if Joel didn't think that far ahead -- even if he was only thinking of Ellie's life when he made his choice -- he made the right choice. As selfish as it was, saving one life was better than killing someone to give false hope and false security to those who've managed to live 20 years into a pandemic.
      And to answer your question regarding "zombie" films / shows like I Am Legend, The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, etc. ( 9:25 "How do you cure the world?") the short answer is: You don't. You can't. Past a certain point, there's no longer the infrastructure in place to manufacture and distribute a cure if a cure is created, especially in a universe where the "zombies" can outlast or overpower humanity. The best that humanity can do past a certain point is to try to survive and thrive in the pockets of safety they can carve out for themselves in the world after.

      @@MasterAndreRaven I think the point of the vaccine would not be to cure, but to make sure nobody turns infected anymore.

    • @MasterAndreRaven
      @MasterAndreRaven Рік тому

      @@NotSeriousPeople Aye, and I get that. But again, for it to be something that makes sure "nobody turns infected anymore", you would need to:
      - Have a vaccine that is 100% effective (apart from being an impossibility, it also means that anyone with Ellie's cure would still show up as being infected the way that she does when tested; if it is anything less than 100% effective, people will get the vaccine and at least some of them would become infected with cordyceps and attempt to / successfully kill others, meaning more people would die);
      - Have a means of reproducing a vaccine (in a country where there are few means of transportation of supplies or equipment, and even fewer safe means of transportation to and from the facility that manufactures the vaccine and facilities that manufacture supplies and reagents to reproduce the vaccine; this would mean that you would not only need a facility for reproducing the vaccine, but all of the supplies and reagents necessary for creating the vaccine in said facility and still useful after 20 years of the facility not producing anything pharmaceutical-grade);
      - Have a means and method of distributing the vaccine (there are two methods for this: "Door-to-Door" or "Vaccination Sites"; "Door-to-Door would have agents, possibly FEDRA, traveling across the country to pockets of survivors with the vaccine (requiring also food, fuel, and weaponry, meaning any such action would also then require a convoy of soldiers and doctors, drawing all manner of unwanted attention from slavers, raiders, and -- most importantly -- the infected as they move from city to city, town to town, trying to vaccinate as many people as possible), whereas "Vaccination Sites" would have set established sites that people would need to travel to in order to get the vaccination (a hard thing to do considering how few and far between radio communication is between settlements, the fact that people would need to strike out on their own through infected areas in order to reach these vaccination sites (many of whom wouldn't make the journey, and of those who do, increasing the risk of being infected along the way, adding to the infected ranks around these sites), leaving the chance of them to be overrun by the infected significantly higher than the chance of these vaccination sites being ultimately successful).
      And *even then* -- assuming *everything* goes to plan, and *all* impossibilities are made possible, and the goal of vaccination *is* realized -- it doesn't stop the fact that the infected outnumber and outpower humanity. All that you could hope for is that humanity would slowly, and effectively, expand once again into areas currently "controlled" by the infected -- something made harder by the fact that humans, by and large, are foolhardy creatures. Many of them would go out into the world with the mindset of "I'm immune!" and immediately be torn apart by a group of clickers or smashed into pulp by the first bloater they stumble across, trying to go somewhere where they'd otherwise know to avoid because they'd have the false confidence that they were safe.
      All a cure would do is make a portion of the people who've spent the last 20 years adapting to the world after -- who have learned through trial and error how to survive -- be reckless and endanger themselves and others. And again, this isn't even starting to cover the fact that humanity who have lived in separate pockets for the last two decades will have become immune to their own internal organisms (bacteria and viruses that we're accustomed to and don't consider since they pose little threat to us through constant exposure as part of a functioning society), and be completely susceptible to external organisms that they would be exposed to if they all suddenly group together.
      TL/dr: A "cure" 20 years into a pandemic that already ended the world as we know it would kill more than it would save, guaranteed.

    Joel’s panic attacks as he becomes more emotionally attached to Ellie is a great addition in my opinion. Joel is by anyone’s standards but his own at the moment, a bad ass, but he can’t believe it himself because he scores his skill not by his successes but by his losses. And that is so profoundly the human experience for so many of us how can we not relate. I am also completely impressed with Bella Ramsey’s performance in the last few minutes of the episode. She is literally facing her greatest fear now. As she told Sam, she is afraid of ending up alone. And you feel it viscerally. Also, keep the dad jokes coming!

  • @cfinley81
    @cfinley81 Рік тому +31

    Joel didn't want to give Ellie up, but the fear of losing her like he did Sarah was too great for him to bear. He spent 20 years masking that pain by killing and surviving and hardening himself up. Then the whole thing with Sam and Henry didn't help either. The devastation and pain Henry endured in his last seconds alive took Joel back to Sarah's final seconds. How he probably would have done the same if he didn't have Tommy.

    Nice to see Graham Greene of Dances With Wolves fame have a cameo in this episode! A great movie to watch if you two haven't. He also had a good cameo in the Green Mile.

    Joel obviously dealing with ptsd over losing Sarah and having crippling panic attacks etc is an excellent touch. especially with what choices Joel has coming up and how that dynamic plays out.

    I totally got Jon and Sansa reunion vibes when Joel and Tommy reunited! This show has made me cry so much and I haven’t played or know anything about the game. Pedro and Bella are perfect in these roles, they are the reason I started watching it in the first place and I am so glad I did. Thanks for not giving any spoilers away and can’t wait for the next episode!!

      Yeah exactly in the podcast Neil and Craig were vaguely hinting at it. She will probably be recast in season 2 when they age 5 years. It would be nice if they got Cascina to be play her. She is the actress they modeled Dina after.

    The old man in that episode at the beginning is Graham Greene; a Canadian actor. He was in Dances With Wolves and The Green Mile along with other movies. He's good.

    13:03 I recognized her right away from the walking dead. She played Michonne's "friend" in the episode where her and Daryl have to murk a bunch of kids, think it was 9x14.
