Charles Carr Actually the PC version of a Minecraft map is Infinite. The further the travel the more the game loads chunks. You can keep walking in one direction and never reach the starting position because it looks infinitely in all directions. I don't know why he added Minecraft when there is no actual entire map for it since any map made would need to be constantly made larger as you keep walking. If he had specified if it was console Minecraft then yes that has a current limit of a 5x5 square of land mass that is made in each seed. But he didn't so I'm to assume he meant PC Minecraft, which again is Infinite so I don't know why he put in the video. In theory the PC Minecraft is larger than Earth or any other known plant. Even larger than any other known distance besides space itself since it loads Infinitely in any direction you walk. As that one guy has done for the past few years. He has a computer program walking a Minecraft character in one direction for the past few years. According to the computer it has walked a total of 1 Trillion blocks. In the game's logic each block is equal to 1 meter. So in real life the computer has walked 1 trillion meters. Which in miles is 621371192.237334, let's just round that up to 621,371,192.3 miles. Now the Earth point to point all the way around in 196.9 Million miles. If we calculate that, 621,371,192.3/196,900,000=3.156 (round up from 3.15577040274) So with that we can say the computer has currently walked the equivalent of 3.156 Earths in a straight line and it continues to keep walking as I speak. So it can safely be assumed that the Minecraft World is infinitely expanding as you travel. So why is a portion of this world considered a map? Please remove it or add other map portions that are also from Infinitely expanding games like someone pointed out, KSP.
While Minecraft is technically infinite, there is a world border that does not let players go beyond +/- 29999984 X/Z. If you do get past that border through teleportation, you will die unless in creative, as any mob past the border begins to take damage until it dies. For the purposes of demonstration, I believe the map includes all habitable land, not land where everything dies.

Thats probably more than 1 million x 1 million blocks. They call it the infinity world, it doesn't really go on forever. It takes awhile to get to the end of the world.
And then there’s Elder Scrolls I. From what I understand, it’s a bunch of preset towns that you teleport between, and outside each town it generates randomly forever, so you can technically go to all of Tamriel, but you can’t walk from town to town since it randomly generates outward forever.
Gotta be honest i thought the thumbnail was clickbait and there would be some dude talking and comparison the maps. but this was amazing and was stunned it wasn't clickbait! Good video man!!
Daggerfall shouldn't even be called procedurally generated, it's straight up random with no rules or logic. You can enter a town through a dense, snowy forest and when you leave suddenly it's a rocky, barren wasteland.
That's because there was less graphics meaning they had more space for maps but some higher quality games have smaller maps because of....well obviously higher graphics,
I mean yeah, but also the fact that the bigger the map, less likely you will explore anything else. Big reason why there are parts of Fuel probably no one has ever been to.
@@CoolScratcher procedural means randomly generated worlds, no matter how much detail it have, if the map layout is designed by an AI, then its Procedural
Also I think empty areas shouldn't count, especially if there's no content or mission objectives. And the terrain must actually be physically accessible by the player in-game, no "lore" distances. Otherwise you could just say that a game like Mass Effect has the player traversing millions of miles in space when fast-traveling around. No Man's Sky has the biggest map!11!1
Not only is the scale messed up, but some these measurements are just flat out wrong. Skyrim is several square kilometers bigger than Fallout 3, which is only 8.5 square KMs.
But lets be honest, most of the towns look super boring. Same houses copy and pasted all over the place. Some areas looked more unique than others, but more were pretty lame. Nature looked good though.

Gérnyi Gergő Yeah but some of the aspects are exactly same in every mimecraft map like bedrock isnt random generated at all it has the exact same pattern go check yourself!
WorldoftheLegends I know that he doesn't, the point of the comment is that it doesn't make sense to include a minecraft world in these comparisons because that's only the theoretical limit of a minecraft worlds size, the actual size is however much you've explored and generated in game which is probably much smaller than any of the other maps.
To everyone saying Minecraft should not be on here: Yes, the CONTENTS of the map is procedurally generated *_but the size is always the same_* contrary to popular belief the Minecraft world is not infinite, it is just so large it feels like it is. The Minecraft world is 16x the size of earth, if i'm not mistaken. Edit: and the player always spawns in the center of the map.
Still shouldn't be there, sure the size is always the same, but that size is only feasible BECAUSE it is randomly generated, having to hand craft a map of that size would take years alone for the map itself
all games have depth to it cuz if its 1 meter deep or a meter high hill or a kilometer high mountain then its not flat so this isnt the case what you are talking about
But they can easily be projected on a 2-dimensional plane (so the area is measurable) which is impossible if you're dealing with games such as No Man's Sky. Please tell me, what's the area of the universe and how would you cartograph it?
Projecting a planet into a 2D maps will only create another problem. Like our earth, there are many projections that can be right or wrong. try search "Earth Map Projection" and you'll find different maps.
If you start with this ... Elite dangerous is the biggest map , only 1 planet is 8 times the earth surface, thats ground map... And if you start counting the space volume ...
Dpower244 its not really infinite. Its massive but there is a limit to how far the world generation can be calculated. The map shown here is actually how big the world is before terrain generation breaks due to mathematical limitations
technically 120 million because from -30 mil, - 30 mil to 30 mil, 30 mil diagnally. each quad is only 30 sq. Kilometres. But I interpret a block as 3 feet imperial.
Technically, The Kerbal Space Program Map (That Contains Planets) Is Around ~0.6 Gigameters. While, Since The Value Kerbal Space Program Uses For It's Map Is The Maximum 64-Bit Float Number, The Actual Size For It Would Be: 1.7976931348623157*10 To The 308th Power. I Would Normally Print Out The Full Number, But I Could Not Find It. Still Though, if That Was Converted Into Meters, That Would Be Centillions Of Universes Of Size. Minecraft hasn't only one map, it's almost infinite different maps you can get if you change the 'world seed'. But i don't know can you do it in no man's sky. Can you?
Minecraft's world size is a weird topic. The absolute farthest you can go currently is about 30 million blocks in each direction, before the terrain generatione engine screws up and can't do anything beyond that point. Some may call it a border, the end, but you can actually teleport using commands outside of that "border". The chunks that you haven't explored yet actually dont exist until you do so. Therefore, some people can make the argument that the minecraft map is actually dependent on how much you've played and explored. If you were to actually have a minecraft map that big, it would be a tremendous amount of file space probably not even measurable. All arguments about the MC world size are somewhat correct. It's sort of like a paradox, but also not really. Here's the thing. Everyone is semi-correct about the topic, but nobody is truly the one that is right. The end.
Minecraft does have a real border and terrain generation doesn't screw up there anymore. It's still at around the same place. And yes, it is a border. It's blue. With stripes.
Psychpsyo aaand its avoidable with commands There is a guy on youtube that "breaks" Minecraft from the inside and uses in-game generation options to make some fucked up stuff. Dont remember his channel name tho
antvenom has a pretty good video on breaking the world border via teleporting, and a lot of other videos on minecraft's procedural generation. you might be thinking about him.
It started with Operation Desert Storm, sinec iraq invaded kuwait, america’s ally, so america invaded, to protect its ally and its oil supply, and the rest of it i doing shit in the middle east too, for oil.

it has a world border, randomly generated chunks yes but it has an end
Dalton F not sure which one you’re talking about.
And then there’s Elder Scrolls I. From what I understand, it’s a bunch of preset towns that you teleport between, and outside each town it generates randomly forever, so you can technically go to all of Tamriel, but you can’t walk from town to town since it randomly generates outward forever.
What really matters is what's inside the map. No Man's Sky is a perfect example of this.

When you realise some old games had bigger maps than some recent ones...
Two words: Procedurally generated
Daggerfall shouldn't even be called procedurally generated, it's straight up random with no rules or logic. You can enter a town through a dense, snowy forest and when you leave suddenly it's a rocky, barren wasteland.
You had much less to do in the older maps than in the new ones, and they didn't look as nice.
full of void.
That's because there was less graphics meaning they had more space for maps but some higher quality games have smaller maps because of....well obviously higher graphics,

Minecraft: I’m the biggest game in the world
No mans sky: am I a joke to you
you have a minecraft map that's been entirely generated?
it's clearly stitched together from tiny little chunks that appear bigger than they actually are
Chandler Gloyd actually he probably used MC edit to load and display all the chunks
WorldoftheLegends I know that he doesn't, the point of the comment is that it doesn't make sense to include a minecraft world in these comparisons because that's only the theoretical limit of a minecraft worlds size, the actual size is however much you've explored and generated in game which is probably much smaller than any of the other maps.
theoretical implies that it's existence is a theory
+Chandler Gloyd That makes no sense you could say that for any game going by that logic
To everyone saying Minecraft should not be on here: Yes, the CONTENTS of the map is procedurally generated *_but the size is always the same_*
contrary to popular belief the Minecraft world is not infinite, it is just so large it feels like it is. The Minecraft world is 16x the size of earth, if i'm not mistaken.
Edit: and the player always spawns in the center of the map.
Mr. BlueSky Earth is flat confirmed
Can also confirm flat earth
Still shouldn't be there, sure the size is always the same, but that size is only feasible BECAUSE it is randomly generated, having to hand craft a map of that size would take years alone for the map itself
Well where is elite dangerous then ? It has a randomly generated map which has the size of 25.000 light years²
Gummiel:
The Title of the video is "Video game maps size comparison" not "Hand Crafted Video game maps size comparison."
To those who says No Man's Sky is biggest. This video compares FLAT maps. No Man's is galaxy based map. So it can't be compared with these maps.
all games have depth to it cuz if its 1 meter deep or a meter high hill or a kilometer high mountain then its not flat so this isnt the case what you are talking about
But they can easily be projected on a 2-dimensional plane (so the area is measurable) which is impossible if you're dealing with games such as No Man's Sky. Please tell me, what's the area of the universe and how would you cartograph it?
Projecting a planet into a 2D maps will only create another problem. Like our earth, there are many projections that can be right or wrong. try search "Earth Map Projection" and you'll find different maps.

KERBAL SPACE PROGRAM
Technically, The Kerbal Space Program Map (That Contains Planets) Is Around ~0.6 Gigameters. While, Since The Value Kerbal Space Program Uses For It's Map Is The Maximum 64-Bit Float Number, The Actual Size For It Would Be: 1.7976931348623157*10 To The 308th Power. I Would Normally Print Out The Full Number, But I Could Not Find It. Still Though, if That Was Converted Into Meters, That Would Be Centillions Of Universes Of Size. So, Yeah, The Minecraft World Would Probably Be Around 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% Of A Pixel.
Psychpsyo aaand its avoidable with commands
There is a guy on youtube that "breaks" Minecraft from the inside and uses in-game generation options to make some fucked up stuff. Dont remember his channel name tho
Yes, you can expand the border... I should try that at some point. Don't need a video for that.
"tremendous amount of file space probably not even measurable" surely it would be measurable
