S1 - Ep 243 - Sea Point - Including Mouille Point, Green Point and Three Anchor Bay!

- In this episode we were planning on visiting Sea Point and also including Mouille Point, Green Point and Three Anchor Bay. These four suburbs of Cape Town are so intertwined and close together that you can hardly see where the one starts and the other ends but the one is just as beautiful as the other. We were searching for a place to have breakfast and finally found Rockpool in Sea Point and had a fantastic meal there. After that it was off again to explore more of these amazing areas. No matter where you were the atmosphere was electric. It was a wonderful experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #capetown #westerncape #seapoint #mouillepoint #threeanchorbay #greenpoint #tablemountain

Hi back on thr back seat. Jo it is getting crowded back here. We need a 16-seater bus. I can remember that we went on a special outings once a month on a Sunday to the Dollshouse Roadhouse and got served by servers on rollerscates. I think, because of those trips and the distance in Namaqualand just traveling from town to town, is were I got my love for traveling. Somehow I want the Dollshouse to have been in the vicinity of the lighthouse. Love the very old, then mid 60' to the now new modern building all in one place. Safe travels.
Just went onto Google. The Dollshouse Roadhous or Drive-through were oppisite the lighthouse. Were vlosed down during 1983 and leveled to the ground. In its place now stands an apartment building.
Roadhouses made for such fun experience and such special memories! The rollerskates, the traytables attached to the car windows, the milkshakes, the list goes on and on! 🥤Thank you for bringing those memories to life again! The last time I saw a roadhouse was in East London about nine years ago, I'm not sure where we can find one in Cape Town nowadays! 🤷🏼♂️🚗 Sad to hear that it, like so many other places, had to make way for an apartment building. All in the name of expansion and progress, I guess! 😏🏘️
We still have Kota Joe Roadhouse here in PTA North. Not a big parking area but can that place get busy.
Remember the specific road, beautiful, do it every time on my road trips to the Cape......all the way from the Far Northern Transvaal
I know the feeling! I remember when I visited Cape Town for the first time from upcountry. My jaw was on the car floor the whole time. Everything was so beautiful, I just couldn't believe my eyes! So I made sure I always visited this area when I was in the city. I hope this drive brought back some good memories for you of visits to this magical city! I'm always happy when you join us! 😁🚗
Loved your chirp about the wagon and donkeys....so funny. Loving these trips around cape town.....such a treat. And thank you for panning the views slowly.!!!!!🎉♥️🎉
So glad to hear you're enjoying these (for us) very different drives! We certainly enjoyed doing them and becoming reacquinted with this beautiful city again. I just had to make sure everyone knows that, whether we're in the middle of nowhere or in the middle of a world city, we'll stop in our tracks for a wagon and donkeys / horses every single time! 😁🐴 I'm looking forward to showing you much more! 😁🚗
My mother, now 92, was brought up in this Sea Point area. In my early 20's I spent time with my grandparents and actually worked at Somerset Hospital for a time so I knowthis stretch of ocean quite well ! You guys have brought back memories again.
I hope your mom was able to watch our video too and hopefully tons of special memories came flooding back to her as well! I'm glad that you enjoyed our visit to Sea Point and surrounds, it must've changed somewhat since you've worked at the hospital. 😁🏨
That is the Greenpoint light house. Some time during the sixties, the Sea Faerer was wrecked, close to the light house.I have color slides and black and white photographs of the wreck. The ship had broken in two and some wag had painted, 'Crazy Horse Salloon on the bridge.Sadly the vessel was looted by low life and property of the seamen stolen.Excellent video thank you.Reguards from,Michael Jonathan Lewis,Johannesburg,R S A.
I saw that wreck as a kid, we also have photos. She soon broke her back, which then swung about 90°.
@Micheal Lewis Thank you for the correction. 👍🏻 I had no idea that the lighthouse in Mouille Point was called the Green Point Lighthouse. 🤷🏼♂️🎑 Very interesting info and history about the Seafarer wreck. I wish it were still around so that I could've taken a peek. I believe it only happened 50m from the lighthouse on 1 July 1966. So glad you're enjoyoing our videos from Johannesburg! 😁🚗
There's a scene with this lighthouse in a Steven Segal movie called 'Mercenary For Justice' where most of it was filmed in Cape Town. Myself and about 40 others were 'extras' in this movie. We got good money over a couple of weeks of shooting. Great days!
My old stomping ground. Thank you so very much.
Hopefully good memories came flooding back! Thanks for taking the drive with us today! 🤩🚗
Hi guys love the experience yonks have not heard that for yonks lol so many new buildings play area for kids great three chows I haven't seen one for years lovely cafe definitely a cosmopolitan breakfast harley Davidson smart one of the things I did in South Africa was ride a motorbike the weather is a lot better than UK loved the wagon and donkeys what a place to go to school you couldn't blame the kids for staring out of the window main road looks trendy amazing views as Sonia said real holiday vibe thanks for a great video cheerio till the next one
Yonks I somehow picked up from Sonia yonks ago, not sure where she got it from! 😁 I've been on a motorcycle a time or two in my life, interesting to hear that you've done some riding too. I'll always stop and admire a nice bike, I don't think that'll ever leave me! 😍🏍️ So glad you enjoyed the drive through Sea Point and surrounds today. Looking forward to you joining us on the next one too! 🤩🚗
Awesome you two. Brings back lots of memories. Many Thanks
Hopefully all good memories! Thank you for joining us today! 🤩🚗
Beautiful as always! One of my favourite places to visit. Thank you for sharing.
I don't blame you. The vibe is always electric and it was even more so when we visited! I think everyone was trying to squeeze the last bit of fun out of the festive season before it was back to the daily grind! We appreciate you coming along! 🚗🌊
I often feel guilty as we live in Strand and never go to that side even though it is so close and beautiful. Neatly done video guys very nice thank you
Yup, agree with you fully since I'm from the same part as the world as you! 😁 It was actually great fun to rediscover the beauty and sights of Cape Town. When you get a chance, you should take a drive out there, you'll have a great time! 🤩🚗 Glad you enjoyed this episode!
Thank you once again for an amazing trip, 100% agree ,you need a 16 seater. Is very crowded back here 😂
Thank you for coming along, we appreciate that! No overcrowding allowed on our backseat, you'll always each have your own little dedicated spot with a front-row view! 😁🚗
I love that a good amount of natural vegatation is kept within the city instead of concrete block one-after-the-other. Another amazing drive, thank you so much DB
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed! 🤩 I agree with you, we're always happy when we get to see green, especially in an urban environment like this. It immediately feels cooler and somehow calmer, even when it's actually buzzing all around! 🌳🚗 We look forward to showing you more green places! 😁
@@DustBugsTravel 🙆♀🤞
I just love, love, love your series, thank you!
That's fantastic to hear, thank you so much! We're so happy to have you on board! 😁🚗
Thanks for another great video. Oh that beautiful sky and weather, it's freezing here in the UK. The old stone church at 4:19 on the corner of Somerset Road and Napier Street, is the Catholic Church of Sacred Heart, it's beautiful inside and I've attended mass there many times. Breakfast? If you are in that area again there is a lovely little cafe at the top of Napier Street, you drive up from Somerset Road until you come to a No-Entry sign and you must turn either left or right, (It's only about 200 yards). The cafe is in front of you on the right hand corner, just by the no-entry sign. No spectacular views and quite small but, amazing food. I'm back in S Africa on 16th Feb, my first trip back since Covid closed down the planet. Just 3 weeks this time, pick up a car at CPT Airport and drive, I'm planning on starting up the N7 and will simply go where the wheels take me.
I'm glad you enjoyed our video! I hope it warmed you up somewhat over there in the UK! 🥶 Our breakfast was rather tasty, but I'll certainly keep that place you mentioned in mind for a future visit! 🥓🍳 Thank you for sharing your memories of this area with us, I appreciate that. You must be super excited for your upcoming trip to our beautiful shores, I wish you safe travels and spectacular sights. It can only be if you're planning to head out on the N7. You're in for a treat! 🚗🇿🇦
@@DustBugsTravel Thank you🙂
Locally, that stadium is also known as the Bedpan, in reference to its shape. There's a museum inside that lighthouse, and there's a famous foghorn locally called Moaning Minah.watching to see if you got to the most amazing Urban Park opposite the lighthouse. Interesting wildlife and indigenous flora, with a very nice restaurant.
Sonia, Cape Town is rated high among the world's top 5 cities, and with the best airport in Africa.
Droughts up North caused hadeda, Egyptian geese, cattle egrets, to migrate here.
Watching to see if you would find the old railway station on the Prom, also Broken Bath Beach. Many locals don't even know.
This is a prime whale watching spot, if people would look up from their phones.
Queen Victoria statue, a drinking fountain, was opposite Dial-A-Bed next to the new Station (no trains, just a new, hip lifestyle centre). The Station is where the train to Kamp's Bay used to stop. There used to be an astronomical observatory in Sea Point.
There was a rail service from Cape Town to Kamp's Bay (Camps Bay is a sad misnomer) for many years. At Bantry Bay, there is an information board that explains the interesting geology, which can be seen from that point.
The stadium is so much prettier than a bedpan though! It was a great visit to this urban oasis, I really enjoyed the walk along the Promenade and the drive through the lively streets brought back many fond memories of when we were resident on the Atlantic Seaboard ourselves a few decades ago! We had a fantastic time. 😁🚗
More beautiful memories of places that I amd Roger used to frequent. Oooh! I am with you there, Curtis! I hate crowds, and always have. I am claustrophobic. Even standing in assembley at school used to freak me out. I really panic when people are pressing in on all sides, ek raak bossies! Yes, I have walked along the promenade when the sea has come shwee pttshioe! Sloppp! Right in front of me. So funny. There is a nice putt-putt couse there where Roger and I often played. Not that I was any good at it.We had a coffee at Rock Pool. Our breakfast place was News Cafe. Oh there is nothing quite like a Harley Davidson, is there! Winchester hotel was our fave hangout. Harveys Pub. Having a drink on the stoep there was so nice. We had lovely evenings watching the sun go down.
I typically take about one drink every twenty years. After a certain place charged me almost eighty bucks for just one beer in 2019, I never went back. One can buy 3 bottles of good wine for R60 at some wineries. That is twelve drinks in all. R76 bucks for a beer is just too much.
@Anna Witter You sound even worse than me when it comes to crowds! I can deal with a lot of people, but not for a long time and the noise is what really bothers me a lot! 😨 Give me an open road and silence any day of the week! 🚗😁 Yup, I can tell you've had the waves sloshing around your feet before, I made your wave sounds for Sonia a few times and she had a good chuckle! 🌊 Glad to hear you can also appreciate a Harley, motorcycles are in my blood and I think will forever be! You treasure so many fond memories of you and your husband's time together and I hope with the sadness, also comes a whole lot of joy at all the fun you obviously had together. Hold on to those! I wonder if you'll have special memories of the places we'll be visiting next. 🤔🚗
@@DustBugsTravel treasure your experiences together with your beloved. Life is so short, and then suddenly, it's even shorter
Beautiful. Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed! 🌊🚗
At 25:28 was the church my parents were married at !
Oh wow, it must hold some fond memories for your family. What a gorgeous church! 💒🚗
Loved this. The beauty of the Cape Peninsula is simply astounding.
Happy to hear you enjoyed this drive! 🤩 Beauty was to be seen everywhere! 😁🚗
The Ritz is apparently closed due to legal issues, great pity. I remember an incident my granny told me many many years ago when she put her handbag against the wall under the window and about half an hour later her handbag was gone, panic ensued, but it was later found on the other side of the restaurant. 😂
A friend was invited to a dinner date there, and after just one revolution, thought that the bubbly (she never usually drank alcohol) had gone to her head and that her date planned to date rape her, so she made a very hurried escape. 🤣
@Antony Naude I didn't know that! 😳 I read up a bit and one website says it's due to leasing issues of some kind. I hope they get those sorted soon so that locals and visitors alike can enjoy that iconic property once again. 🤞 What a fantastic story about your granny's handbag, I absolutely love that! 🤣 Glad she found it again! 👛🤗
Local "businessman" had big ideas for turning the Ritz into a luxury hotel. His investors ran away when they found out how much work the place needed.
Stayed there a few times. Always had a good stay there. Shame that the lovely Buz-Bey Grill on Three Anchor Bay has been replaced by a chicken carryout.
Dear Jimmy, the owner and Chef died back in 2020.
Can’t wait to move to this place ❤
I'm sure you'll be very happy there, it's an exciting place! 🌊🤩
Beautiful scenery could have watched for ages. Can we see both of you or is Sonja shy 😂 loving the vlog have binge watched most of channels now.
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed our visit to Sea Point and surrounds. Sonia isn't shy by any stretch of the imagination, but camera-shy she certainly is! She flatly refuses to be filmed. I'm hoping to convince her otherwise during the course of this year, but time will have to tell! 🥰🤷🏼♂️ We look forward to you joining us for our next outing! 😁🚗
I love your video and enjoyed every moment of it... please shoot more videos. I love you guys 💌💌
I STARTED MY MARRIED LIFE OFF IN GREENPOINT, IN 1966. OUR HOME WAS ON THE MAIN ROAD. I ADORE THE VICTORIAN STYLE BUiLDINGS. ALL THE HOUSES ALONG THAT WAY WAS THAT STYLE. I DO NOT KNOW IF ITS STILL THE SAME I HOPE SO. HOW I LONG FOR THOSE DAYS, IT WAS FAB. NOW THAT I AM (MUCH) OLDER, NOW I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT TIME. AS A CHILD, EE WENT CAMPING, IN A TENT, THERE WHERE THE STADUIM IS NOW. OH MY HEART CANT TAKE IT. SEAPOINT PAVILION WAS OUR PLAYGROUND WHEN LIVING IN G/POINT
THAMK YOU FOR TAKING ME DOWN MEMORY LANE. HAVE A FAB XMAS AND SAFE EXPLORING FOR. 2024
Hi you two! I nearly missed this wonderful outing. Was out in the bushveld without internet.
The peninsula is beautiful where ever you look. I can think of no reason why anyone from where ever in the world would not want to come and live here,
Modern as one can wish, with the time of donkey carts and ox wagons not forgotten.
Blue seas and blue skies (perhaps not always), astonishing'
Thanks again and
Keep safe!
I'll forgive you for being late to the party, but only because you were in the Bushveld, another one of our favourite places! 🥰 I hope you had (or are still having) a fantastic time. We really fell head-over-heels with the Mother City again! The place is beautiful beyond belief! 🤩 Oh, the weather was just too kind to us this day, but most definitely not always. It's not called the Cape of Storms for nothing. 😨
The beautifully tree lined street👌👌👌👌
That one had Sonia in absolute awe, she couldn't get over the trees that touched at the top. It made for a beautiful archway to drive through! 🌳🚗
@@DustBugsTravel There’s another such in Harare Zimbabwe but its the Jacaranda trees canopy……my oh my.. just beautiful especially in full bloom!!!
A mobile nibble for the Dustbugs
As you might say, this is 'my vibe'. 😊 I'll bet those homes, condos and apartments along the Strand are worth a lot of Rand. And I loved all the beautiful shady trees of the Sea Point sidestreet too - very nice.
Doen tog 'n toer van Kirstenbosch. 🙏
We're long back at work again, but we visited quite a few more places, so you'll have to wait and see if we did as you asked! 🌳🚗
I love Cape Town❤
Ditto. ❤️
Boy.. I wish I lived in Cape Town and not wet Wales.
Please, like our mates from Lampeter did, come teach the Anglophones of Cape Town to pronounce Llandudno correctly. Welcome to Cape Town.
@David Johns It is truly a spectacular city and I'm glad we can show you present-day Cape Town! Just imagine you're in the car with us! 🤩🚗
Must be a Sunday as traffic is not as busy ? Brilliant video thank you. I am back to Cape Town in December. Your videos are the best advertisement for South Africa ever ! And as you know I love your videos with trains in them.
Thank you, happy to hear you enjoyed our visit to Sea Point! 🚙😁 We were actually there on a random Tuesday in early January, so I imagine folks were still on holiday then and hadn't returned to work fully yet. We've become fascinated with all things trains and stations too and feature those in our videos whenever we get the opportunity! 😍🚂 Happy planning for your upcoming trip! ✈️🇿🇦
I remember coming to the light house there was a drive in cafe .They came to your car and took your order. They attached a tray to your car and you ate out of little baskets. It was lovely
We believe it was called the Dollhouse Roadhouse and other viewers share your thoughts that it was a great place! 🍔🚗 Roadhouses were quite the vibe back in the day! I believe this particular one closed down in 1983 and was later demolished to make way for an apartment building. 😏🏘
Just a little silk scarf.🙃😂🙏
This place looks so much like Santa Monica. I’d love to visit.
I hope you get the opportunity to do so one day soon! You'll love it! 🚗🌊
The stadium is impressive even just passing by😂 like I did👍
I know! We've just always passed by too, but it's actually amazing when one stands next to it. The sheer size is unbelievable, makes me proud of what we can achieve in this country if we just try harder! ⚽🇿🇦
It's Cape Town Stadium - Green Point Stadium was demolished in 2007 to make way for the new CT Stadium.
Correction noted, thank you. 👍🏻
Loved that lighthouse. Where do those paragliders land. Ocean view besutiful.
That lighthouse with its red and white stripes was such a beautiful sight against the blue ocean as backdrop, we loved it too! 🎑 The paragliders land on the grass of that urban park which runs along the Promenade next to the ocean, I saw one land as I was taking a walk there that day. Glad you enjoyed this drive with us! 🌊🚗
How many people remember the Dolls House drive in restaurant at Mouile point?.....the last time I saw it was in 1962 when we had burgers delivered to the car window.
Quite a few of our viewers remember it well. I was only introduced to Cape Town, including Sea Point, in the early 90's. It sounds like such a cool place! A roadhouse by the sea! 🚙🌊🍔
I lived in Glengariff Court, Seapoint in the early sixties and attended Seapoint Boys Junior School. Remember when the Seafarer ran aground and the sound of the helicopters ferrying the people off the ship. The smell of fuel and the debris being washed up on shore for months after. Lots of great memories of a beautiful country wonderful people.
Hi there, just a correction, it's not Moullie Pont lighthouse, it's actually Green Point Lighthouse
We believe so, thank you. 🎑
Love your channel. Just a correction though. The stadium is Cape Town stadium. The smaller stadium to your right was Green pont stadium
Correction: Bedpan 😂
@@Afriqueleblanq 😂 I take so much delight in you traveling all these places on my behalf... You guys do it, so I don't have to navigate the hot sun, especially in that sizzling Northern Cape. I served briefly as a relief- Border police officer at the Vioolsdrift Border-post, back in the days. We had to sleep in tents and pre-fab buildings, I cant belief the guys doing duty there now are enjoying air-conditioned comfort. Anyways, love your work. keep those vids coming..."Bedpan...out"
@Rod Franks I'm happy to hear you enjoy our videos! 😊 Thank you for the correction, I had no idea that it was called Cape Town Stadium. Now I do! 👍🏻
@Western Alliance Protection Thank you, I'm very glad to hear that you enjoy our travels, we certainly appreciate having you along! How interesting that you used to be stationed at the Vioolsdrift border post! The landscape in that particular part of the world was beyond belief to us, we just couldn't stop staring at the beauty all around us with those cliffs on the one side and the river on the other. 🌊⛰️ You must've been boiling at times though! 🥵 The police quarters look fantastic now! How far they've come since your days there! 😁🚗
@@DustBugsTravel Believe it when I say, we called it, "Satan se smelt-oond", Satan's-furnace... We did compulsory, Tour of Duties there, prior to 1994... But even that heat and barren landscape was nothing compared to a half-drunk Police-Cook. The food was plenty but boy, the fella couldn't Cook. So we lived off some Tannie's Tuck-Shop.😂😂😂 Romany Cream Biscuits, Rusks and Chips.
Cape Town Stadium officially is called DHL Stadium, after its sponsors.
Thank you for the info. 👍🏻
Eishhhhh it’s beautiful shame!!!!
Crazy busy, but beautiful all the same! 🤩🚗
Hi dust bugs love what you guys do for us that cant travel that often but please please please can I ask that we get to see Sonia as well for a bit it would be great to put a face to the voice
So glad to hear you're enjoying our videos of the beautiful Cape Peninsula! 🤩🌊 Sonia isn't keen to be filmed and I have to respect that. For now at least, her voice and laughter will just have to do! 🥰🚗
Opposite the Green Point lighthouse was a roadhouse that we frequently visited ...in the previous century.. Ok so now we heard that Curtis is the spanner in the wheel...and we heard Sonia do some singing..lol. Which vehicle are you guys now driving?.
Another viewer also mentioned the roadhouse, apparently it was called Dollshouse or something similar if memory serves. She did a bit of digging and found that it closed dowin in 1983 and was demolished to make way for an apartment building. Cape Town was still an unknown to us in the eighties, so we never went there. Oh yes, crowds and noise aren't a good combo, but I'll listen to my wife's singing any day of the week! 🤣 We were driving a white Renault Kwid this time around. 😁🚗
@@DustBugsTravel Knowing the name now, I could find the Doll House on google...memories..I
As an ex uber driver for a year and a half, that area was bread and butter for short trips. I hated it. But so many places to stop and see or eat a meal. Luckily the night life of Sea Point is no longer. But still many ladies out sadly.
Green Point Athletics track was also a constant place to go for me in the 90s. Thankfully it wasn't demolished.
Yup, I can imagine up-and-down that busy Main Road all day taking its toll on any mind. But Sea Point is still a vibe and, as you say, so much to see, eat and do! We lived very close 20+ years ago and clearly remember seeing the nightlife you're referring to. For some reason, I specifically remember the kilometre or so stretch just before one enters the business district of Main Road being particularly active. Luckily you were reminded of some good stuff too, like the track! 😁🚗
❤2❤
Please like to see the lady as well.Just hear her talk.
The lady is my wife and she is super camera-shy. 🥰 For now, she's not keen to appear on camera. Hopefully I'll be able to change her mind one day. 🤞🚗
The interesting thing about this promenade in the off season is that you will encounter Hollywood stars and business moguls on bicycles or jogging or having a leisurely walk. Capetonians pretend that they do not recognize them.😉
I can believe that! I think that urban park can compare to the best in the world, no wonder they hang out there! 🤩🌊
@@DustBugsTravel And many of them seems to think that a baseball cap and sunglasses provide a perfect disguise.😂
Not much traffic.
Sometimes, bumper to bumper from around 4pm to 11pm on weekends, when beachgoers return from their day out. Sometimes, fire engines anf ambulances cannot get through.
@Louise Panton No, it didn't bother us at all! 😁🚗 Compared to six lanes of bumper-to-bumper when we lived in Miami, this was really nothing. It just added to the buzz actually! 🤩
Hi i need a english callage middle of sea point but i forget that name please if u can help me. That callage is near the sea. Thanks i wana take a visa .
We don't live in Sea Point and don't know that area of Cape Town well at all anymore, so I have no idea what the name of the college is. 🤷🏻♂️ Good luck, I hope you find the info you need!
What was the cost of the breakfast....beautiful place.
Excluding gratuity, the grand total was R309, my efficient wife says. 😁🥓🍳 The bagel was top class, I would recommend. 👌🏻
Great price...what you where served just looked like my dream breakfast...here in london you got to move all the beans to see what is underneath. love your vids.
I lived here for quite a few years in the 90's I have to say, its a little tricky understanding your editing. I'm looking at the street with you going in one direction and then suddenly it switches to you are going in the opposite direction. I think it's great though that you offer all this for free.
