      Glad you loved the drive to Muizenberg along the beach. It's always so beautiful with the waves sometimes crashing over the road and bringing the kelp along. I've seen a TV show about those beach huts in the UK, so have a fair idea of the ones you're talking about. 🏘️ I can quite easily imagine myself sitting in a steam engine chugging to and from work every day along that magnificent stretch of coastline. I loved the station building too and it was great to actually see trains coming and going! 🌊🚆 St James Beach is a lovely little spot and I can easily hang out there for a couple of hours. Those beach huts have recently been painted and they look bright as anything, loved it! We appreciate you tagging along to these two crazy beautiful spots on the Atlantic Ocean! 🚗😁

    Another place thick with memories for me. we played putt putt there at Muizenberg and used to walk along the footpath to St James. Muizenberg railway station has the loveliest old building, used to love travelling out there by train. So glad you paid a visit. That clocktower is also a well known landmark. That station goes back to when my mom was a girl, living at Lakeside nearby. WE used to travel by train all along the sea front to Simonstown. So beautiful! Our favourite hangout was the Brass Bell right on St James station. Its on the other side, you cross through the subway, and its right on the sea! WE would sit and have a drink up in the Captains Cabin. What an awesome view, with the sea slopping and flooshing against the side of the building, and every now and then the skreeeeh gedoenk gedoenk of a train pulling in. Glad you took in Boyes drive. It is truly magnificent and at the right time of the year, you can see whales out in the bay. Thank you for another lovely journey down memory lane.

      It does sound like you had a great deal of fun in these places too! We don't know that part of the Peninsula very well at all, but it certainly had a very festive atmosphere and all the places were packed! It was great to see! 🥳🏖️ The Muizenberg Station was a wonderful place to visit, we look differently at stations since we started travelling to and exploring the little towns. And the station by the sea had to be explored too! 🤩 I can just imagine checking out a steam engine rolling in there! What a setting, with that magnificent building on the one side and the ocean on the other! 🌊🚂 It was just too busy for us to even catch sight of the Kalk Bay Station properly, so we didn't make it to the Brass Bell this time. But we've had many a happy time there, it's a great place! 😎🍺 It must be awesome for you to be reminded of all these lovely memories you have of all these places, you're blessed to have so many special ones! It's bittersweet, I know, but you're still fortunate to have them. 😊

    In the 1960s when I was 8, I nearly drowned at St. James pool. Later when I was 10 I learned to swim there too. Brings back many memories. I left CT in 1975, and have only been back on short visits. There's a shopping mall built over where my house used to be where I grew up.

    The bathing boxes on St James were newly built before Christmas. Muizenberg was also recently rebuilt. Not sure when though.
    You didn't do the trip on a Sunday. If you had, you would have seen the flea market at Sunrise beach (not to mention the added traffic). A place I used to go to with my mom very long time ago. But all those places bring back memories. Including living in Lakeside for a number of years and Fish Hoek for 5 years.
    I even lived in Strand for a year. Been around the block.
    Your videos even if so familiar are also interesting for the places I have not been. Like driving on that footpath :-)

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +2

      @Brendan Schafer Those bathing boxes at St James are picture-perfect now! 😍🏘️ We were there on a weekday this time around. The traffic was crazy enough on a non-flea market day, but I remember us seeing one before, but that was quite a few years ago on the left as one enters Muizenberg from Baden Powell Drive. Good to hear that you were a neighbour in Strand at some point. 🤩🌊 As for driving on the footpath, I've become so used to trying to get Sonia as close as possible to places that I don't even think twice. If the car can fit, we go! 😳🚗

    What a lovely drive again...and including a section of the Cape Argus Cycle tour. As a child in the late fifties/early sixties my parents use to go by train on a Saturday to St James...beach blankets, food for the day etc... and we spent the whole day there under those little houses and on the beach. That tidal pool was so nice to play in and I later learnt to swim there. Behind the station are those steps up to Boys Drive.... Thanx for these memories....and I suppose we will see the iconic Brass Bell in the next episode..

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +2

      I can only imagine going by train to St James Beach, a truly wonderful little beach which I didn't even know before! 🏘️🏖️ I remember family outings in the Free State where my mom would also pack a basket to the brim with all our favourite treats. We didn't have the beach, but we were happy to go wherever they would take us because of those snacks! 🤣 That tidal pool at St James looks like the perfect spot to learn to swim too! We saw many sets of steps, but I did not put my knees through that type of punishment! The traffic was so wild in the next episode and we completely missed the Brass Bell! We've been there a few times, but I would've loved to capture some of it on film. We'll have to go back one day just for that! 😎🍺

    I just LOVED this part of your trip. We used to take the train from Parow to Soutrivier, hopped on to another train through Muizenberg to Simon's Town, from where we took a bus to Seaforth, with its small beach and huge rocks and lovely palm trees where we camped out for the day. That was in the 1960s.
    In 2021 my brother took us on a tour around the mountain and although it was raining a bit, the trip brought back many memories. I loved it that you stopped at the Muizenberg train station and showing us the buildings next to the road.

      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +1

      Reading your comment made me realise how much trains used to be a part of everyday life in the past. It sounds like such fun to board a train to go to the beach! 🚆🏖️ It's reality that the weather isn't always beautiful in this part of the world and it changes on a dime. We accept it on the day just like you did when your brother was showing you around. I know how disappointed we are sometimes when we're hoping for a clear, sunny day and then it's overcast and rainy. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I thought you might enjoy the station and that old building with the cannons, we couldn't skip those! 😁🚗

    Hi you two! This was a very enjoyable outing. There was even a cuppa! Did you notice how the sky cleared after that?
    The long tarred road literally on the beach was quite an experience. I am glad they kept the colourful beach shacks in shape. Muizenberg (and even South Africa) just would not be the same without them. Those buildings just across from the beach must also take an effort to be kept so neat and beautiful.
    Thank you for pointing out and showing the historicity of the place -
    and no less than two working railway stations in one episode ! But then this Ís the Cape of GOOD HOPE!
    Looking forward to our next trip.

    I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these wonderful adventures around the Peninsula with you - all places I have visited many times, but not for a long time in the last decade or more.
    It’s been really lovely doing so again, as your passenger, hearing your happy, excited chatter and not having to negotiate traffic. I could just sit back, relax and take in everything!
    This episode was especially good - seeing trains operating on fully functioning tracks and the attractive Muizenberg Station still looking in ship-shape. We’ve become so accustomed to seeing the many rundown, derelict stations on your other journeys.
    That breakfast was yummy! The views from Boyes Drive are superb - the whole outing was “fantastic” and “I loved it” as much as you did, Sonia 😁

      And we appreciate you boarding the back seat every time we hit the road! 😁🚗 We've loved rediscovering all these places a mere stone's throw from where we live and it was hard to come to terms with the incredible beauty sometimes. The traffic was wild at times, yes, but we loved it and we knew what we were in for when we made the decision. Our outlook was that we'll be like tourists who don't mind the traffic, but are just too grateful for everything they get to see and experience. It worked, we had a fantastic time! I agree with you, it was absolutely fantastic to see not only a stunning well-maintained station building in the most gorgeous setting, but to have trains coming and going, was just the cherry on top! We loved it! Oh, and breakfast wasn't half bad either. Sonia was snacking on the other half of her French toast for the rest of the afternoon! 😂🥪

    Nice to see muizenberg - I grew up there. Moved when I was 25. That building by the pools was made to look like a ship. On the left side were the bumper boats and a small train which I rode many times. One day I was struggling on the putt-putt course to get the ball up the final ramp. I hit it a little hard and the ball took off...followed by a kid falling off the train as it passed by lol. He just got a hell of a fright and thankfully wasn't injured. I bought him an ice-cream.
