Never thought I'd see the day when I'm thinking : (Snow) SHOVEL needed on the front of South African "bakkies" !!! Horrendous snowstorm for which most residents are totally unprepared for ie driving stratedgy (best to stay OFF the roads), food, blankets, clothing extras as in gloves, toques, scarves, a shovel PLUS a spare tow cable. Outstanding help - satisfaction 100%, exhaustion 200% . Thank you for all this and more *OUTSTANDINGLY GENEROUS*
Such kind words, thank you so much. Highly appreciated 😁🤗 And the same here, we did not expect that much snow. When we started ascending the mountain pass, I know where to usually start expecting the snow and about a kilometer lower down, it started already. So then we knew, it's going to be a special experience for sure.
I've been looking at Toyota Prados for sale and came across your video, definitely want one now. After +-20 years they still look great. Fortuners seem like light version of the Prado.
They are absolute excellent vehicles. Super tough, super reliable and so comfortable when left standard and taken care of. The only downside is the fuel consumption of the 4.0 V6 version, but that is still the one you want. Back then it was a very expensive car and yes, the Prado is considered a higher spec vehicle than the Fortuner.
Respect to you guys for recovering/ in some cases requiring some people 👏 ❤..you gained a subscriber and l will be sharing all your uploads...great stuff guys😊

Thank you very much for the kind words and the support. We really do appreciate it 🥳 The scenery was amazing to say the least, but yes, if we didn't complete the route, some people might have had some serious problems. We rather don't want to think about what could have happened to some of them. One thing is for sure, we'll be back the next time there is snow to make sure everyone stays safe. We really enjoy what we do 😁
You can trust an Afrikaner to get you out of a tough situation , I know this because my Boss is Afrikaans, you guys are absolute heroes, taking the time to assist those in need. That V6 Prado though.
Haha, sounds like you have some experience yes 😂 We always try to make a plan, glad you approve and enjoyed. That V6 Prado looks good hey? Thank you though, it took a while to get it the way I want.
@@ChristoffSmitit's a pleasure, my wife and kids also enjoyed the channel last night, Al's those tyres, that V6 didn't get into much trouble, very impressive
Great work guys, some of those folk would have been stuck a long time without you. Ok so hooning around on the rev limit is not my thing but great effort for getting out there an helping folk. What tyres are you running on the 120, they seem to work REALLY well in those conditions. Again great effort! (Fellow Prado Driver (95) )
Thank you, appreciate it 😁 Nice to run into a fellow Prado owner on here. I do know the rev limiter thing is not for everyone, we're maybe a bit wild at times 🤷 I'm currently running BFG Muds, they are 35's. I swap out tyres quite often, but I am honestly so impressed with these. Would highly recommend them. Since the winter started, I've had them in the dunes, mud, clay and now snow. They perform great everywhere.
We salute you guys - you did tremendous recoveries! PS: be prepared! People should always (1).carry water, warm clothing/blankets and some form of food (eg. Pronutro bars or similar) in their vehicles when venturing offroad (especially in snow conditions!). (2).carry the necessary 4x4 recovery equipment, i.a. a shovel, traction boards, hi lift jack, recovery ropes/blankets, proper recovery points, shackles, recovery dampers, winch, etc. If you don't have experience driving in snow don't rely on the buttons of your latest 4x4 model - get training at a reputable 4x4 training centre!
Thank you for the notes, people should really keep these things in mind when venturing out. You never know what you might run into, especially in conditions you're not familiar with or if you don't have a lot of experience.
Lots of the people who were stuck did lower pressures, but it doesn't help when you're already stuck like that. For us though, we kept them on 2bar, because we enjoy the slipping and sliding and playing with the full throttle 😁 That's kind of what we do 🤣
Thank you very much, glad you've enjoyed it. This was on Monday. After that the snow washed away from all the rain, but just received confirmation that it started snowing again. So tonight should see some good snow for a great experience tomorrow.
@@ChristoffSmit ah great, thank you so much. My granddaughter and I are so excited and would love to go tomorrow. Where is the best spot to drive to, we are coming from Cape Town!
It all depends on which vehicle you'll be using of course. Not sure how much snow will be on Bo Swaarmoed (where this video was taken). But at Matroosberg there will definitely be snow, most places up there though you do need a 4x4.
@@ChristoffSmit Thank you so much! We have a Toyato Fortuner 2x4, we will drive as far as we can in the direction of Matroosberg and just see how far we can go. We will send you photos if we make it!
The ground clearance would already help, but yes, be careful when driving with a 4x2 vehicle. Once you're sliding or stuck, the vehicle can't save themselves. Would be amazing if you make it. I hope there is a lot of snow and it is completely worth the drive 😁
Thank you very much 😁 And no, we would never use the tow hook, we're aware that becomes a bullet when breaking off. I have a different mounting bracket (the tow hook is at the end of it) at the bottom of the Prado, we use that in such cases. I still need to add another recovery point though.
Oh 😳 That might be a problem. Firstly, the intense cold could affect the battery. So the car might not even work. Or the battery will just drain quite quickly and not deliver the power as usual.
Well, they were suppose to be around 1bar, but we were there to have fun as well (slipping and sliding 🤣), so we kept our tyres at 2bar the entire time.
@@ChristoffSmit I think it was the correct thing to do. Nate of Dirt Lifestyle I think mentioned in one of his videos that it's not the same as sand and mud and that you don't air down the same. But awesome vid - looked Freak'n A! Hope it makes it to us near Hogsback 🤞🏻
Ah really, that's interesting. I'll go have a look if I can find that video. I've found that the muds really work well aired down to about 1 / 1.2bar in the snow. You have so much more grip then, as your footprint is also wider. For normal all terrain tyres, I would also just leave it as be without deflating. It was absolutely beautiful though. Quite something to see.
This is true, it is the safest and best way to handle the snow. We do it a bit different though, as we enjoy to play with our cars and have fun. But lots of experience behind the steering wheel is needed.
Hope you count your blessings everyday if you can wake up and go call the very same phenomenon that displaced the poor and caused them loss, as amazing.
Are there positives and negatives about it? Yes, of course. But it is amazing in the sense of how beautiful nature can be and also how thankful we should be for the snow, as that contribute in a big way to our dam levels. We still feel for the people affected negatively by it.
@@ChristoffSmitWow 🤩 Your compassion, driving skills, tyres and type of vehicle certainly got a lot of people out of trouble. May our Heavenly Father bless you abundantly. This world needs more of you!
There weren't many 4x4 vehicles though, most were 4x2's, hence struggling so much. And then on the 4x4's, the normal tyres just don't cut it. You need an aggressive mud terrain like I have fitted on the Prado 😁
Yes, without a doubt. It was the middle of the day when we helped them and it was 1'C, imagine what they've experienced during the previous night. Just glad we could help 😁
We should really support these guys,so that they can buy bigger pull trucks specially made for these kinds of jobs, and special chains they can fit around the wheels, snow is very slippery??
We would appreciate the support tremendously 👀 We are already prepping gear and our rigs for the next snow fall so that we are 100% ready as can be for the rescues 💪🏽
I dont understand why there are so many people taking chances driving their ordinary cars on such roads and that includes the guys in their 4×2 bakkies
The same here. I don't think people realize how quickly it becomes undriveable/extremely slippery. And then there's nothing you can do to make your car move.
Crazy stuff. In Europe, nobody would be driving without chains. Those "normal" cars are lucky you guys came along or that they got off the mointains. Pretty irresponsible, especially with children. Anyway, did you guys deflate the mudtyres at all? If so, what pressures were you running?
Yeah, as someone mentioned in another comment, South Africans are a bit irresponsible 🤦♂️ But thank you for the nice comment, just glad we were there. Right place, right time. No, we didn't deflate at all. We should have gone down a bit, but we wanted a challenge and to make it a bit more slippery. So we've stayed on 2 bar
Find it very funny that 4x4's are stuck, but clearly not much experience shown for these conditions. Would never cope with conditions like in northern Europe
That's the thing, when you put our SA guys in desert/mud/rocky conditions, they usually do really well, because people understand it. In SA no one ever deals with snow, so there's no real way to gain experience with it. And the same other way around, when we go on tours with guys from Europe, they have no idea how to drive in the dunes/sand.
@@karamurray4044 Northen Hemisphere where snow is more predominant. Superman actually alludes to this in the video saying that us Saffas are not use to snow so please NH forgive us if we are not doing it properly.
The NH people are probably laughing at us struggling in the snow 🤣 But once they come visit us and we tour Namibia and drive in the dunes, then we are the professionals again 😎
Daar is 'n pad.
We are using a proper 16ton snatch strap (I know kinetic have about 10% more stretch), but this specific snatch works just fine for us. And there's not really any space out of the tracks to build momentum to put it to full use every time. As for tow points, we shackle to the tow points on the other vehicles where we should be recovering from.
Thanks, while you do help people, you also provide some fantastic footage for my training in Search And Rescue on exactly how not to behave and what not to do in terms of irresponsible use of assets. While I have often talked of people doing totally irresponsible stupid things in a 4x4 in remote areas, I've never up till now had any actual footage of boys using toys they are not old enough to use responsibly. Thank you, Harvested and filed.
The problem is, we don't really have those kind of things available in SA, so we need to work with what we have. For us who do the recoveries, we are being pretty safe. Long range fuel tank (180l of fuel) and that's also why we went with two vehicles. If one breaks down, we have another on standby.
Usually they are only for government vehicles in SA, but the one vehicle we've helped had plates from the town just down the mountain. Not sure why they are yellow.
Bull I grew up in this area, there has been much heavier snow in the past. Only now that everyone can film etc. Now it's climate change. Hope you were been sarcastic

Bly dit word geniet 😁 Dit was verseker baie fun gewees. Sal dit graag meer gereeld wou doen
Hello, lovely video- wish I was there! Which day was this and do you know if the snow is still there?
I hope there is a lot of snow and it is completely worth the drive 😁
well done and great video but just a bit of advise....never use your tow hook for recoveries.......
Thank you very much 😁 And no, we would never use the tow hook, we're aware that becomes a bullet when breaking off. I have a different mounting bracket (the tow hook is at the end of it) at the bottom of the Prado, we use that in such cases. I still need to add another recovery point though.
if you dont know what you are doing stay of the roads dont damage the roads with incompetend driving.
Luckily nothing much was damaged, just where people slipped off the road. But most roads are tarmac underneath the snow.
Lekker windgat tot jy jou gat sien.
For sure!
so what can happend with elctric car ? 😢
Oh 😳 That might be a problem. Firstly, the intense cold could affect the battery. So the car might not even work. Or the battery will just drain quite quickly and not deliver the power as usual.
@@ChristoffSmit OMG 😲
Waar in die Wes-Kaap is dit?
Bo Swaarmoed, net buite Ceres.
What pressure were the Prado's tyres at?
Do not bush the gas too mach, make sure you go slow and gentle when you driving the snow, you also need snow tires or any good tires.
This is true, it is the safest and best way to handle the snow. We do it a bit different though, as we enjoy to play with our cars and have fun. But lots of experience behind the steering wheel is needed.
No... Is the towed individual trying to remain stuck, unbelievable.
If you're talking about the GD6 Fortuner, then yes 🤣
Hope you count your blessings everyday if you can wake up and go call the very same phenomenon that displaced the poor and caused them loss, as amazing.
Are there positives and negatives about it? Yes, of course. But it is amazing in the sense of how beautiful nature can be and also how thankful we should be for the snow, as that contribute in a big way to our dam levels. We still feel for the people affected negatively by it.
Christoff my maat, julle is ysters!
Dankie man, waardeer! 💪🏽
What tyres did the two rescue vehicles have on?
The GD6 Fortuner has normal all terrain tyres, my Prado though runs with BFG mud terrains which helped a lot.
@@ChristoffSmitWow 🤩 Your compassion, driving skills, tyres and type of vehicle certainly got a lot of people out of trouble. May our Heavenly Father bless you abundantly. This world needs more of you!
Wow, such kind words. Thank you very much 😁 We're just glad we were able to help so many people out of trouble.
@@ChristoffSmit ❤️
LOOK who is spinning their vehicles now. In the snow nogal.
Who? Tell us 🤣
lol ...only time the 4 x 4 status vehicles ever get used for its overall purpose!
There weren't many 4x4 vehicles though, most were 4x2's, hence struggling so much. And then on the 4x4's, the normal tyres just don't cut it. You need an aggressive mud terrain like I have fitted on the Prado 😁
34:00 thanks for helping...so you coud literally die outside in the cold
Yes, without a doubt. It was the middle of the day when we helped them and it was 1'C, imagine what they've experienced during the previous night.
Just glad we could help 😁
We should really support these guys,so that they can buy bigger pull trucks specially made for these kinds of jobs, and special chains they can fit around the wheels, snow is very slippery??
We would appreciate the support tremendously 👀 We are already prepping gear and our rigs for the next snow fall so that we are 100% ready as can be for the rescues 💪🏽
The 6th recovery guy didnt put his ESP off
Could be. He was one of the guys who drove his own vehicle behind me, so we didn't check. He said his 4x4 doesn't engage though.
I dont understand why there are so many people taking chances driving their ordinary cars on such roads and that includes the guys in their 4×2 bakkies
The same here. I don't think people realize how quickly it becomes undriveable/extremely slippery. And then there's nothing you can do to make your car move.
Tow Ball recoveries ????
Not once have we done a tow ball recovery no.
Hi daar waar presies is dit my maat?
Ek is nou opad daarna
Good job,put some chains around the tyres next time, thanks for helping those in need.
We might do something like that next time yes. We didn't expect it the way it was. Thank you for the kind words 😁
NH people: WTF are you doing, not like that.
Next time guys put on your superhero capes!
NH people?
@@karamurray4044 Northen Hemisphere where snow is more predominant. Superman actually alludes to this in the video saying that us Saffas are not use to snow so please NH forgive us if we are not doing it properly.
The NH people are probably laughing at us struggling in the snow 🤣 But once they come visit us and we tour Namibia and drive in the dunes, then we are the professionals again 😎
@@Zenda_Nior thank you for explaining. :)
Daar is 'n pad.
En as daar diertjies was is hulle verseker dood gevries, hierdie soort weer kom omtrent nooit so dik voor nie.
Hierdie ouens het mense se lewens gered.
@@ChristoffSmiten vriend knap gedaan..... Mag GOD julle seen in alle areas in jul lewens.... 🙏
Baie dankie, waardeer dit 😁
You need snow tyres
The closest we're able to get here is mud terrains 🤣🤷
What? That will be boring; it will spoil boys' sense of adrenalin-rush fun.
Have you guys not heard of kenetic straps? And correct tow points?
We are using a proper 16ton snatch strap (I know kinetic have about 10% more stretch), but this specific snatch works just fine for us. And there's not really any space out of the tracks to build momentum to put it to full use every time.
As for tow points, we shackle to the tow points on the other vehicles where we should be recovering from.
Dit lyk nou moerse lekker! Eks jaloers!
Glad we could be of assistance at such a young age already 😁
Ek weet ek kom seker negatief voor omdat ek kla omdat daar onnodig " donuts" gemaak is, maar ek wil wel vir julle manne sê " welldone" omdat julle so baie mense gehelp het.
Baie dankie, waardeer dit 😁 En dis geen probleem nie, no hard feelings.
0:20 The universal puddle splash chuckle. It is a guy thing.
Had a good laugh about this comment now. So true 😂
Ek wil eendag saam gaan as jul so gaan help hehehe
So ford ranger is a scam
I'm rather not going to comment on that, but let's just say, I won't disagree with you 🤭🤣
You need CHAINS on your tyres. You can all FREEZE if your petrol runs out and you have no more heaters.
DANGEROUS
The problem is, we don't really have those kind of things available in SA, so we need to work with what we have.
For us who do the recoveries, we are being pretty safe. Long range fuel tank (180l of fuel) and that's also why we went with two vehicles. If one breaks down, we have another on standby.
Why are some number pltes yellow?
Usually they are only for government vehicles in SA, but the one vehicle we've helped had plates from the town just down the mountain. Not sure why they are yellow.
Sleet not snow
Could be yes. The flakes were really soft at some point though, but can't say for sure
Further, irrefutable proof of global WARMING 🤣😂😅
We came across quite a few people who said this is the most they've seen in 30 to 40 years. As to why, I do not know 🤷🤣
Bull I grew up in this area, there has been much heavier snow in the past. Only now that everyone can film etc. Now it's climate change. Hope you were been sarcastic
Really? I can't comment on that though, only quoting what I've heard from older locals. I'm not from the area myself.
Global warming? The biggest hoax around.
