  • Hastings History Is Rich And Fascinating, And There Is Much More To The Town Than Just The Battle Of Hastings.
Welcome to the History And Exploration Of Hastings, East Sussex
Hastings is a town situated on the south coast of England and is within the county of East Sussex. Hastings gives its name to the Battle of Hastings, which took place 8 miles away in 1066. Interestingly Hastings is also home to the oldest recorded town charter in the United Kingdom, which was granted by King William I in 1086.
Today Hastings is a popular tourist destination. The town's beaches and nearby attractions, such as Bodiam Castle, make it a popular spot for both domestic and international tourists. In recent years, Hastings has also become known for its annual Pirate Day, which is held on the first Saturday in September.
Hastings' history is rich and fascinating, and there is much more to the town than just the Battle of Hastings. If you're interested in learning more about the history of this charming town, be sure to check out the Hastings Museum, the Art Gallery, Smugglers cave and off cause the ruins of the castle itself.
Evidence of prehistoric settlements have been found here in the town, including flint arrowheads and Bronze Age artefacts; Iron Age forts have been excavated on both the East and West Hills. This suggests that the inhabitants moved early to the safety of the valley in between the forts.
Hastings castle which now lies in ruin, was built on the authority of William I, shortly after the battle of Hastings, you can visit the castle by travelling up the cliff railway and its certainly worth a visit.
In one of our recent videos, we visited nearby Rye, and made mention of that town being one of the five cinque ports during the middle ages, well Hastings is also one of those important ports, the following three are: Sandwich, Dover and New Romney, which suggests great importance was placed around this British south east coastal region.
Hastings has had its fair share of disasters in its history, the first being in February 1287, when much of the town and half of Hastings castle was washed away by floods.
The town has also been raided and burnt to the ground at least twice by the French, pushing this town into a downward decline, during the preceding years. It took centuries to recover, but eventually established itself as a fishing community.
Hastings also has a fascinating connection to smuggling, and this can be seen if you visit West Hill Near the castle ruins, here you will discover, "St Clement's Caves", partly natural, but mainly excavated by hand by smugglers from the soft sandstone. It was an ideal location and hideaway for their contraband.

Jonathan and Jennifer here. Jonathan is our resident history buff. New subs here as we're heading to the UK for August and September. Our current itinerary doesn't have much time in East Sussex, so we may have to live vicariously through your videos.

Thank you buddy, my apologies for the delay in messaging back. I filmed my recent videos last year, and haven’t been out filming at all this year. I had a heart attack recently and have had to slow down a little. Hope all is well though, and thank you very kindly for your wonderful support on the channel.

I went there years ago. Some parts were a bit rough, other parts quite posh and trendy. Overall I loved it. Always had a notion to move there. Maybe it's time I went back for another look.
