Nice to see you visited my home town! Well, I lived in London for many years, where I was born, but I moved to St Leonards-on-Sea 24 years ago and consider it my home town now. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else! I remember seeing the fire on the pier. We were all gutted when it happened. It had a wonderful old ballroom at the end where many famous bands played during the sixties and seventies. We're hoping the pier may reopen again soon as it's been closed for a while. St Leonards was a seaside resort the well-to-do Victorians liked to visit before Brighton became more popular. Queen Victoria stayed there and liked the opera house.

St Leonard’s is also a little oldie with small lovely charming cafes and shops along the seafront underneath the big ship building and warrior square parks. Thank you so much for the memories, and showing the wonderful new changes. My family had caravans in 3 parks from 1977-1994 when sadly my darling dad passed away. Its 4.10am, I was missing Hastings so much, and now I feel better!! 😘🇬🇧🏴#1066country!

@@OurWorldForYou that's so kind of you. Once this awful covid properly settles down I shall. Thank you again, and stay well. 🙂
Oh, a Wimpey - proper place with plates, and who didn't love a Brown Derby? We've our second jabs on Friday, and so longs as we all get them, then we can say goodbye to Covid . Seasides in winter are the best place, and if you get a little sun, even better. Well, 🤞 you can get there one day soon. Take care 😍
My first trip to Hasting was in June 2019. I loved it so much went back 4 months later in October. I can't wait to go back once we can travel again. Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing! Love from 🇨🇦 🍁
🙏 Thank you - hope you can return sometime soon - Hopefully we can provide you with a little more inspiration in the surrounding area once we're out of lockdown. What part of California are you from? Our last visit was in 2007 on a bit of a road trip, so we saw it litlle bit of the state, but would love to head back one day.
stayed there on a school trip a few years ago 🥰🥰 we were taken in by families and had a wonderful week in Hastings. we could even learn at the language school there. such a beautiful place, we had tons of fun! I would like to return in the future...thank you and lots of love from Hungary! 💕

Awesome video! In two weeks we will visit Hastings too! Btw in Hastings a very important international chess open takes place in January every year since 1890s! Maybe that's why the chess pieces? We will visit Foyle's house of course too! 😀❤️
Hi Alex, Thanks so much, and no, I didn't know that about the Hasting's International Chess congress, and this year will be the 98th year - that's amazing. I hope you have a fabulous time in Hastings, it is a wonderful place to visit and explore. All the best, Gary & Janis
I love Hastings. I was a former language student there in 1996-1997 and then I lived in Bexhill with my ex in 1998. It will always be my safe spot, when things go tipsy turvy, trying to visit twice a year. Last time was in August. Hoping to take my kids to the Jack in the Green, Pirate Day and Guy Fawkes night carnivals in 2021. Currently I live in Yarmouth , just moved
Is that Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, or the one in Norfolk? Somebody likes the water don't they? 🤞 for 2021, but we'll emerge from this challenging time okay, all been a bit poo, but hopefully we'll appreciate life just a little more on the other side.
Wow, in November, that's brave. Love the golden sands there, they seem to go on forever. It's a beautiful part of the world - hope you enjoy your new adventure. Take care, stay safe.
I was a language student there in 96/97 and then I lived there in 1998. Now still living in England, but in another county, I'm trying to go back twice a year and I'm hoping to move back there, once my youngest child is a near adult
Fabulous; hopefully, you'll pick a sunny day where you can explore all of Hastings delights.😍 Remember to be wary of the seagulls if you go for fish 'n' chips by the seaside; they can be masters of thievery 😮🤣
@@OurWorldForYou hi, I had a fabulous day trip to Hastings. I walked to the East cliff Funicular and went on short walk around the nature reserve. So beautiful, was impressed with the spectacular views over the beach and pretty colours of the houses! Then got lift down, walked to a chippy and had tasty Rock n chips! I've never seen so many chippies!! Was too tired to go Pier, so just sat on beach. Will definitely be visiting again, as it's so lovely! Did not expect Hastings to be so interesting and pretty.
😍 That is so good to hear. They do like their Fish 'n' Chips in Hastings - The only issue is, so do the seagulls 🤣 It is a beautiful place with a few surprises. Great to hear you're making the most of those beautiful autumn days we get. Take care, stay stafe.

I am going to Hastings in July this year to watch ub40 and Bob Marley tribute. But lovely seaside town. If Chatham town fc gets promoted from the istmians south east none league to istmians premier league then probably be coming down to Hastings as a Chatham town fan and watch then then probably go down on beach afterwards
Hi Simon, That sounds cool, can't beat a bit of reggae. Remember the Labours of Love from my early adult years. Hastings is cool, it may not have a sandy beach, but it has plenty of history. Cheers, Gary & Janis

Thank you for this video which shows a side of Hastings I suspect many people didn't know even existed. I was lucky enough to move down to next door St Leonards on Sea in 2015 and like everything the area has to offer. Sadly though due to covid most of the annual festivals and celebrations were cancelld in 2020 and I suspect many more will be in 2021 but hopefully we can bounce back.
🙏 Thank you, that's very kind. We like to look at perhaps the less obvious and possibly surprise folks who may have heard about a place, but not always the positives. I think later this year we will be in #staycation territory, and they'll be a big bounce back, especially for places like Hastings. I just hope the smaller venues can survive until then 🤞
Hi. Your voice is so calm. Thank you for sharing your adventure to Hastings. Question, is it possible to visit all the places here in the video for a day? I plan to visit Hastings in a day, soon.
Hi Jay, thanks for the comment, and sorry for the delay in replying. Our video was shot in one day. We arrived at Hastings at around 11:00am and left at 5:00pm, plus we stopped twice, once at the Hastings Arms for about 40 minutes & a cheeky ice-cream at Flushed in Rock-a-Nore that took about 20 minutes. So I think you can easily cover what we covered in a day, plus more. The most important thing - enjoy yourself. Have fun & safe travels. Gary & Janis
Hi Andrew, First, thanks for watching and paying attention. Now to your comments, and I am going to be pedantic; I did not say the Normans landed on the beach, I said ' '...and this is the beach made famous by the Normans when they decided to invade in 1066' We know the battle didn't take place in Hastings, but we all know the Norman conquest as the 'Battle of Hastings' The boat is a Norman Longship; 'Metal sculptor Leigh Dyer wants to create the Norman longboat sculpture to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings' - www.ybw.com/news-from-yachting-boating-world/plans-for-norman-longboat-sculpture-to-mark-1066-anniversary-19140 It's of the same type depicted on the Bayeux tapestry. Also, I think the Normans were really Vikings, who raided the region of France, liked it so much they hung around, that's why they're called Normans, Men of the North. And to the third point, I did not say RX stood for Hastings, I said; ..."and if you're wondering about that RX it's the fishing code for Hastings, and the surrounding harbours." Which, I hope you agree, is correct? Anyway, I am just kidding with you, I am pleased you watched the video, I'm glad you paid attention, and I'm pleased you took the time to comment. Have a great week, Gary & Janis
You are not being pedantic you are being pathetic and distorting the truth! I was born and bred in hastings, if you want we can have a full debate, to an extent i enjoyed your vid but you need to accept local knowledge is a travellers best guide!
Andrew, I never meant to offend, and I whole-heartedly agree that local knowledge is invaluable. Actually, I would love to have sit down and a chat, it would have to be over a pint because that's the sort of person I am. How long have you lived in Hastings for? (Okay, I'm asking how old you are - no need to answer), where you parents from Hastings, what changes have you seen? Anyway, Take care, stay safe, Gary (& Janis)
You're absolutely right, it does have a feeling that parts of it are caught up in a strange timewarp - perhaps that's why it made such an excellent base for 'Foyles War' - clear the streets, and you can step right back in time. Thanks so much for the comment, stay safe, stay well.
Wow - in Summer, that must be amazing, if a little busy at times. We want to explore a little more of the area around Hastings & St Leonards, so keep a lookout. We may have something in the next few weeks now we're free again. 😍
Another of your finely crafted travel videos - top shelf in every regard :)An essential place to visit for anyone who considers themselves a serious historian - important history is everywhere in Hastings. Just a note regarding the beach ( if I may ) it may not be sand, but the stones hold many, many fossils - for the most part ancient small shells, but when broken open, there are also some interesting crystals to be discovered from time to time - a diverting and fascinating way to spend an hour or so :) Anyway, a brilliant and evocative tour around Hastings - including the ' Foyle`s War ' connection ! Well done !
🙏 Thank you - we were late to Foyles War on TV, catching up now with reruns. We've more planned in the future with the history of some of the other towns and villages in the region - very much looking forward to that.
@@OurWorldForYou Yes, Foyle`s War, an excellent series, with Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks. However, they did get things completely wrong with the various Spitfire footage, in one particular shot, showing Mark 11`s taking off, which then some how turned into Mark 5`s in the air !!! Noticeable, as Mark 11`s only had machine guns in the wings, but Mark5`s were also equipped with cannon - and were not even in production at the date suggested in the episodes !!!!! Sloppy research in an otherwise brilliant series - but I imagine most people would not have noticed :) A critical eye can be a hindrance at times :( Good ho !
Oh, I am the same, especially in TV & movies. Although, I have come to appreciate the craft in those who can turn Chatham Dockyard into a set for Bridgeton, Sherlock Holmes, The Man from Uncle, Les Miserables, Call the Midwife, and so much more. I think I need to relax a little more.
@@OurWorldForYou Yes, absolutely, the set designers have to have the imagination to see the possibilities, together with costume and appropriate paraphernalia :) My wife and I were quite fortunate to be visiting Chatham once when a period drama was being organised, mostly centered around the enormous rope house. We enjoyed seeing many actors at close quarters until we were shooed away off set !
Mermaid fish restaurant at 9.30 , is the best fish and chips I've ever had , and if you walk a bit further by RX fisheries , you get some lovely jellied eels
🙏 Thanks Johnny- Top tip - we've tried the fish hut, and that was pretty nice - Now, as for jellied eels, they're the devil's work - although Janis's parents love them - Think I'll stick to locally caught crab - 😍
1,700 views..!!! You guys are huge. Really enjoyed watching this video... Ellie and I used to do the Hastings Half a few times and I really love this seaside town (Ellie thinks it's too small for her).
🙏 Stefan, yeah a bit of a surprise, and one of our only days out last year and nice to explore in a bit more depth (it always throws up a few surprises) Looking forward to a few more days out discovering when we get the chance. Take care, stay safe, stay sane 😍
Have to just say the Normans never landed on that beach in 1066 firstly because they almost certainly landed along the coast near Pevensey and secondly because that beach wasn’t there then! Oh and by the way, the old world Pump House was built in 1956 out of bits salvaged when they drove the new road through the Bourne. Nice video though.
Thanks Chris, I took a little bit of artistic licence to link that famous battle that we had heard of even though it has little to do with the actual battle site. One day I'll put together a road trip from Hasting to Pevensey bay and onto Battle to join the dots. That could be fun. Thanks again for commenting Take care, stay safe & well Gary & Janis

Sounds wonderful Jétthias - we have a TV drama 'Death in Paradise', which is filmed on the Guadeloupe Islands, a couple of hundred kilometres to the north, but I suspect the landscape is very similar. Anyway wishing you the very best, Gary & Janis
The beach wasn't there in1066! After landing at Pevensey, Will the conk transferred his non-knights to Hastings by boat and landed on the mainland of England where they later built a priory ( since demolished but remembered in Trinity Mews and Priory meadows). So much of what we have been told about Will and Harold has been twisted with the passage of time.
Interesting - agree that history is an ever-changing landscape, and that's why I love it. It's interesting when you look at the Cinque Ports, and their limbs, that some are no longer near the sea.
Our World For You . I'm an amateur 1066 battle researcher so have looked at the evidence for a number years. The Forestry Commission is supposed to be looking into my claim that the battle was fought up by Battle Golf Course for the last three years.
I've watched a few programs on the impact of the Norman conquest, but I do understand that it's all fluid. What's that saying - 'History is written by the victors', and new evidence is continually uncovered or re-evaluated. Anyway, all the best in the future
Hey Julie, We did visit All Saints Street at 08:23 - Okay, didn't have too much to say, but I don't like to bore people. Thanks for watching anyway, All the best, Gary & Janis
Bonnie, are you a local? I guess different folks have different strokes. I think it makes a great base, somewhere to come back to in the evening after a day trip to Rye, Bodium Castle or Batemans. I have watched the film of Robin Hood. Prince of Thieves 1991. Norman Conqest Soldiers are set in the motion picture. The 1190s. Regin of His Majesty King Richard the Lionheart.
Rob, I like that film, some good parts, some a little weak. I think in places it tries to be too funny (Alan Rickman plays a great part, but the role is a little too comedic). Still, it's just a movie, not a documentary, so grab some popcorn and enjoy. Cheers, Gary & Janis
Rob, That was such a sad loss, such a great actor, plus he also did some fun movies, always with his humour; Love Actually, Die Hard & Robin Hood PoT. Gary & Janis
I saw pictures of the old pier, and it looked fabulous in it's heyday 😍 , but the years were not kind, it has a bit of a torrid time of it. I think it's better to have a pier than not. As for awards, well, guess it's all subjective.
Hi, You have to do better than that - what's terrible, my video or Hastings? If it's the former; okay, my videos are not for everyone, I get that. If it's the latter; can't agree, there's a lot worse places in the world, and I think Hastings brings a lot of joy to a lot of people, just walk past the adventure golf to see that. Anyway, have a good Sunday. Hopefully, the sun is shinning in your part of the world. Cheers, Gary & Janis

It also has a hidden beach, which the locals call the nudist beach. You have Pett Level with the historic gun tower and bunker, which over looks Winchelsea beach. St Leonard’s is also a little oldie with small lovely charming cafes and shops along the seafront underneath the big ship building and warrior square parks. Maybe come check out our famous pirates weekend this July.
🙏 Thank you, that's a great list to be getting on with - we will return, but who knows when? Looking forward to it - especially on a day like today 😍
Thank you for sharing your video of my favourite town, Hastings. It truly is a wonderful and very special place.
It's my absolute pleasure; I love bringing back memories and I am so glad you enjoyed it. Take care, stay safe 😍
I'm so glad I was able to bring back some fond memories - are you able to return to Hastings? If you can, why not treat yourself to some fish 'n' chips by the sea? You never know, you might even get a sunny day to enjoy it 🤞😂😂
@@OurWorldForYou that's so kind of you. Once this awful covid properly settles down I shall. I used to work in the wimpey in the old town and also one summer in a yummy fish and chips shop (the name escapes me now). Id love to live there, even in the winter. Its my happy place!
So happy you found this gem on the south coast. Its like stepping back in time in some places. 😊
stayed there on a school trip a few years ago 🥰🥰 we were taken in by families and had a wonderful week in Hastings. we could even learn at the language school there. such a beautiful place, we had tons of fun! I would like to return in the future...thank you and lots of love from Hungary! 💕
🙏 Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it and you were treated well. I hope one day you do make it back. Ashamed to say we've not been to Hungary yet, but we want to discover Budapest & so much more too. Hope you're staying safe & well - And here's to a better, brighter future 🍻
Awesome video! In two weeks we will visit Hastings too! Btw in Hastings a very important international chess open takes place in January every year since 1890s! Maybe that's why the chess pieces? We will visit Foyle's house of course too! 😀❤️
Hi Alex,
Thanks so much, and no, I didn't know that about the Hasting's International Chess congress, and this year will be the 98th year - that's amazing.
I hope you have a fabulous time in Hastings, it is a wonderful place to visit and explore.
All the best,
Gary & Janis
@@OurWorldForYou Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. I just dipped my feet in the water, fairly warm, wishing I had a wet suit, so I could go swimming
What county are you in now? There is something special about being by the sea, and hastings has some real charm. 😍
I Was à langage student in 97 /98
Really enjoyed this video! I've never been to Hastings, but I definitely want to now!
Well done. You have managed to encapsulate the essence of modern Hastings in one brief video. Here's to its post-covid future!
🙏 Thanks so much - I'm glad you liked it. It was our aim to touch on the past but focus on the future. Like you, I hope the future is bright for all, once Covid is a memory.
so beautiful town thanks a lot!
🙏 Thanks again Nalia, so glad you like it - it's a place with a lot of history
I am going to Hastings in July this year to watch ub40 and Bob Marley tribute.
But lovely seaside town.
If Chatham town fc gets promoted from the istmians south east none league to istmians premier league then probably be coming down to Hastings as a Chatham town fan and watch then then probably go down on beach afterwards
Hi Simon,
That sounds cool, can't beat a bit of reggae. Remember the Labours of Love from my early adult years.
Hastings is cool, it may not have a sandy beach, but it has plenty of history.
Cheers,
Gary & Janis
Love your wonderful video full of beautiful scenery. Cheers from across the pond :)
🙏 So much, appreciate that - Which part of the USA you from? There will be more soon, next video on the 9th (One from summer so still some blue skies!) Anyway, take care, stay safe and all the very best for 2021 Cheers 🍻😀
@@OurWorldForYou I'm in NY sir, wish I could visit but the current situation makes it a bit difficult, hopefully 2021 will be brighter. Stay safe and happy new year to you and the family. :)
Thank you 😀 - Love New York, Virgils on 44th Mmmm 😋, and of course McSorley's Old Ale House - Dark for me 🍻 We've been a few times, and just love exploring - some many similarities with London NYC Diamond district on 47th - Hatton Garden in London, Meat packer = Smithfields - there's so many 😀 Cheers, and here's to a bright 2021 🍻

Belinda, now that sounds great, we'll have to see if we can head down to catch it sometime. I bet it looks stunning.
Thanks again 😍

@@OurWorldForYou The lights were unfortunately damaged during Storm Eunice and we are currently waiting for them to be fixed. When they are working you can see the bottle alley light show at 7.30pm and 9.30pm every day, with an extended 30 minute show on Fridays. if you go on hastings online type bottle alley theres a video, its called bottle alley because its covered in bottle glass all the way along.
Thanks Belinda, we'll keep an eye out for it being repaired, and I'' check out that video.
Had no idea Hastings was like this. Will definitely make a day trip after seeing this!!
Fantastic, Hastings has many different sides, so choose the ones you like and have a great time 😀 Happy & Safe travels
Looking to visit soon xoxoxo
Angie,
So cool, hope you have a fabulous day. We were there last Tuesday, and we did. So much charm.

Thanks for this beautiful video. I love Hastings but haven't visited since lockdown. I think i'll go next week
🙏 Thank you for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and I may have inspired you to return. I hope, if you do, you have a fabulous time - stay safe, stay well 😍
Thank you for this video which shows a side of Hastings I suspect many people didn't know even existed.
Great as I do have relatives there
That's fabulous - you'll have to visit when you can 😍 Beautiful place
The normans landed at normans bay, the sculpture is the head of a viking longship and RX on boats stands for Rye sussex.
Hi Andrew,
First, thanks for watching and paying attention. Now to your comments, and I am going to be pedantic;
I did not say the Normans landed on the beach, I said '
'...and this is the beach made famous by the Normans
when they decided to invade in 1066'
We know the battle didn't take place in Hastings, but we all know the Norman conquest as the 'Battle of Hastings'
The boat is a Norman Longship;
'Metal sculptor Leigh Dyer wants to create the Norman longboat sculpture to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings' - www.ybw.com/news-from-yachting-boating-world/plans-for-norman-longboat-sculpture-to-mark-1066-anniversary-19140
It's of the same type depicted on the Bayeux tapestry.
Also, I think the Normans were really Vikings, who raided the region of France, liked it so much they hung around, that's why they're called Normans, Men of the North.
And to the third point, I did not say RX stood for Hastings, I said;
..."and if you're wondering about that RX
it's the fishing code for Hastings,
and the surrounding harbours."
Which, I hope you agree, is correct?
Anyway, I am just kidding with you, I am pleased you watched the video, I'm glad you paid attention, and I'm pleased you took the time to comment.
Have a great week,
Gary & Janis
You are not being pedantic you are being pathetic and distorting the truth!
I was born and bred in hastings, if you want we can have a full debate, to an extent i enjoyed your vid but you need to accept local knowledge is a travellers best guide!
Andrew,
I never meant to offend, and I whole-heartedly agree that local knowledge is invaluable.
Actually, I would love to have sit down and a chat, it would have to be over a pint because that's the sort of person I am. How long have you lived in Hastings for? (Okay, I'm asking how old you are - no need to answer), where you parents from Hastings, what changes have you seen?
Anyway,
Take care, stay safe,
Gary (& Janis)
I was in Hastings some 60 years ago. Other than the scuptures and less traffic/fewer people, it hasn't changed,
You're absolutely right, it does have a feeling that parts of it are caught up in a strange timewarp - perhaps that's why it made such an excellent base for 'Foyles War' - clear the streets, and you can step right back in time. Thanks so much for the comment, stay safe, stay well.
we looking to go back to combe haven-really enjoyed it-and hastings too-but next year we goin in june
Wow - in Summer, that must be amazing, if a little busy at times. We want to explore a little more of the area around Hastings & St Leonards, so keep a lookout. We may have something in the next few weeks now we're free again. 😍
great video
🙏 Thank you - appreciate the comment 😍
Another of your finely crafted travel videos - top shelf in every regard :)An essential place to visit for anyone who considers themselves a serious historian - important history is everywhere in Hastings.
Just a note regarding the beach ( if I may ) it may not be sand, but the stones hold many, many fossils - for the most part ancient small shells, but when broken open, there are also some interesting crystals to be discovered from time to time - a diverting and fascinating way to spend an hour or so :)
Anyway, a brilliant and evocative tour around Hastings - including the ' Foyle`s War ' connection !
Sloppy research in an otherwise brilliant series - but I imagine most people would not have noticed :)
A critical eye can be a hindrance at times :(
Good ho !
@@OurWorldForYou Yes, absolutely, the set designers have to have the imagination to see the possibilities, together with costume and appropriate paraphernalia :)
My wife and I were quite fortunate to be visiting Chatham once when a period drama was being organised, mostly centered around the enormous rope house.
Don't forget their seasonal festivals, such as Guy Fawkes cortège, Jack in the Green in May and the Pirate weekend :)
All good reasons to return - take care, stay safe 😍
Thanks again for commenting
Take care, stay safe & well

I quite fancy going to Hastings it looks really lovely. May I ask what the opening music was in the video please?
Hi Alan, It's a lovely place and certainly worth visiting. We're looking forward to heading back and discovering a little more of the region too. The opening musing was called Wander by Emmit Fenn

That's superb - enjoy what you have, it's a beautiful part of the world. Hope you 're good; stay safe, stay well. 😍
What about all Saint Street it ix the poshs st im Hastings

Hastings is ok for a day visit.Any longer you will be bored. And your feet will be sore!
Bonnie, are you a local? I guess different folks have different strokes. I think it makes a great base, somewhere to come back to in the evening after a day trip to Rye, Bodium Castle or Batemans. Our day was pretty full on, and there was more we could have explored (plus a little more pub time would have been nice too 😊🍻) Still I bet it's busy now, must be slight madness.
Anyway, thanks for the comment,

I have watched the film of Robin Hood. Prince of Thieves 1991.
Norman Conqest Soldiers are set in the motion picture.
The 1190s.
Regin of His Majesty King Richard the Lionheart.
Rob,
I like that film, some good parts, some a little weak. I think in places it tries to be too funny (Alan Rickman plays a great part, but the role is a little too comedic). Still, it's just a movie, not a documentary, so grab some popcorn and enjoy.
Cheers,
Gary & Janis
Thank you.
Alan Rickman died of Cancer.
Rob,
That was such a sad loss, such a great actor, plus he also did some fun movies, always with his humour; Love Actually, Die Hard & Robin Hood PoT.

Hi
Hi John
New pier is rubbish can’t believe it got an award 👎 I’ve lived in Hastings 50 years old pier was great
I saw pictures of the old pier, and it looked fabulous in it's heyday 😍 , but the years were not kind, it has a bit of a torrid time of it. I think it's better to have a pier than not. As for awards, well, guess it's all subjective.
terrible
Hi,
You have to do better than that - what's terrible, my video or Hastings?
If it's the former; okay, my videos are not for everyone, I get that.
If it's the latter; can't agree, there's a lot worse places in the world, and I think Hastings brings a lot of joy to a lot of people, just walk past the adventure golf to see that.
Anyway, have a good Sunday. Hopefully, the sun is shinning in your part of the world.
Cheers,
