As an INTP, I don't have an internal monologue, I am the internal monologue. Additionally, what people hear and see from the outside is just the messenger created to meet the outer world's demands and It is a completely different person than what is inside. That's why INTPs don't go out much because being exposed to both worlds and their demands is so exhausting. We're having a hard time balancing both.

WOW.I am so glad that you brought internal monologues.Mine is a dialogue.I process feeling, emotions, and thought through internal dialogues(imagined conversation).I do it as if i am explaining to a friend, family or a stranger.I have read that imagined conversations are abstract thinking.Having a debate in my head is common for me. In my imagined conversation, sometimes, the other person may not fully appear but feel like he is there.I am not sure if its the right way of putting it but its just like a crazy person do it,except that mine is internal

My inner monologue almost never stops. I think it works somewhat similarly to Boris's, in some ways, but unlike him, I don't have any other option. I have basically 0 ability to visualise anything. If I try to force it I might get some incredibly vague impression, but never enough to do anything useful, and the inner monologue will usually kick back in and try to take over again.
-INTP (used to think I was ISTP but I think that was more wishful thinking about my ability to react quickly to things)

Funny story. Was at the supermarket. Had read about a new flavor mustard debuting. I saw it and said, “Oh look there’s that new mustard!” “Oh I saw an advertisement for that.” “It looks good, let’s buy it.” “Yes, let’s!!!” I picked it up and saw a lady looking at me weird. I said to myself, inside this time, “Oh no, you let your inner monologue out loud, whoops!” ENFP

That has happened to me too - the inner monologue slips out in public places! The opposite happens as well where I think I've said something out loud, especially greeting someone, but it's only been in my head!! Also ENFP.

I like Boris’ suggestion for examining visual next (still images? Movies? Color? Opacity? Ability to rotate objects spatially, etc). (Can some people touch or feel what they visually imagine?). I also wonder about other inner imagined sensations, like “taste imagination” (which I thought might be Si related, but unsure)

Right so I am an infp with an internal monologue and most times I basically am making comments about things around me in the same manner that I would if it was something I wanted to say to someone else. ie. "Wow those neighbors are loud when they drink and their music taste kind of sucks 😂. I wonder what it would be like if I was them." Other times I am having hypothetical discussions, arguments or imagined experiences play out but without any vivid imagery (I can visualize but not really SEE it if that makes sense) so it is highly verbally descriptive and dialogue heavy without accounting for other details like how they may look that day, what may be going on outside of the subject of thought ( the conflict, romantic encounter, sci fi anomaly or whatever). Those scenario thoughts are what is going on when I daydream, often on a walk or during a boring easy task. I'm also highly auditory over visual. I could tell you where something is, why it is there and how it got there, but not the details of what it looks like unless I saw it recently and/or often.

You are simply magical Joyce 🦄. I also now can shoot out Brad’s Ni and definitely his Fe, but also his fi. Which both is enjoyable to him and terrifying. We have Ni Fe conversations daily and I throw out my Ne fi and he laughs😂 a lot. But he also gets my fi and it’s really helped him to ground. That’s right after a few decades, the ENFP grounds the INFJ… of course it was the opposite at first but inside outside, outside inside.z. 😊😂❤

I would connect having a rich inner monologue with letters I, N, T and J
    - I vs E is like inner monologue vs outer dialogue
    - N vs S is like mind vs body (being present)
    - T vs F= thinking vs feeling
    - J vs P is planning vs improvising- so thinking ahead vs not thinking ahead
But letters can mean anything. For example I was confused when I heard that ISTPs are Ti doms and their second function is Se- being present but in INTP's case the Ti dom causes disconnect from the present (Se trickster)(how can you be in your head and at the same time present?). Or INTP: Ti logic is convergent thinking (J) but Ne is associated with creativity which is divergent thinking (P)(but I think creativity is differently connected to cognitive functions- for example ISFP is the artist and has Ne trickster).
ISTP is in the present, the problem arises and because he's disconnected from systematic (SJ or NT- best way of doing things), he can solve it any way- the thinking is much less complex. For INTP the problem is still far in the future so he analyses it from different angles to find the best possible solution.
My way how to distinguish these two types is the time between start of the thinking process and end (decision). ISTP does both in the present, INTP's thinking process starts when the problem is in the future to have more time for thinking but if the problem arises immidiately and make a decision NOW, INTP freezes and doesn't say anything or says a crap.

This was a very interesting discussion. My INFP friend and I (also and INFP) have had similar discussions about visualization and internal monologues before. I strongly related to what Joyce mentioned about NFP's having discussions with other people in their minds. Though sometimes I can also accidentally verbalize the internal dialogue and have to explain to a group of people that oh I was just having a future conversation in my mind, sorry about that for their reaction to be much like Dave in the movie Stranger Than Fiction. I can't say I have a super visual imagination, for me it's more so quick glimpses of things rather than a movie like I hear other people mention. Though it's nice to hear that other people who can visualize struggle with some of the same things that I only thought due to how my brain operates. I like how the conversations are starting though and it allows us to further gage how we are different and similar from each other.

I’m ENTP. I would call my internal monologue an interpreter, reviewer, refiner, investigator/researcher, or sculptor of ideas. Ne creates a full idea with no monologue but then (Ti and/or Si I’m guessing) come in and fill one of the roles above… usually with the goal of understanding the details of the idea/ how it stacks together… or to refine or develop the idea. I have zero monologue for everyday mundane tasks but have videos and images for those (such as seeing a coffee cup then a silent video of making coffee)

Hahahha, I mean my household was only half Asian, but my ENTJ father and me ENFP were NOT quite and my Mom is the white one….. it could be introverts not realizing they have one since they filter things before speaking and may not realize that the speaker is a speaker transferring sound. Like maybe.. but also, yes a lot of Asians are mute at home and just like less individualized cultures might not. My inner dialogue isn’t a monologue… it’s a weird creative feeling of analyses running on the bottom, visual memories playing, feelings tenticleing around, a radio station soundtrack somewhere sometimes louder than not and like sitting in some blue glob in the middle ahaha. Oh yeah, and like an annoyed bus driver that asks if we are getting off at the next stop and I’m like play the tape back, I wasn’t paying attention…. Crop crop boring things… crop crop random details oh wait, what’s that😂 …. Also, solved the political science theory from ten years ago…. Hush, we are so close to integrating don’t traumatize her…. How did we decide that we were collectively a her… look at the genitals… Te, you’re so gross. Shut up Fi….. she’s crying again isn’t she…. Te is just so mean…. He really is-Si. Wait, he’s a boy- Se. Shut up Se- all other functions and shut it down dreams, just always dreams and that’s before coffee…..😊 I’m kidding it’s not that intense just amplifying it for fun.

I identified as ISFP. Honestly, I don't know if this could be called as inner voice(?) I do hear a voice in my head (it's different from mine, I'm also curious to who is it belong lol) and even I could change it to other people's voices.
A lot of of times, I find myself asking "what should I do today?", "what do I want to do?", "oh, i love this stuff, should I try it too?" And the other times I judge other people like "why would they do this? it's so dumb", "why won't they at least try it once?", "how can they be so careless?", etc. Which is very Fi thing. When it comes to a really interesting lesson I learnt, I would find myself repeating and explaining it in my mind, over and over again when I was in my spare time. Back then, I wasn't like this. Maybe it's because my Ni is developing. I had to shut it up and do something like making art or read comics if there are too much annoying thoughts or questions.
It's hard for me to do visualization if I never seen it before my eyes. That's why I think abstract art is amazing and difficult to understand. Like, how could you picture it in your mind? Also, the talking out loud when I find a new word is very relatable.

I' m the same!! I feel like there is "another person" in my head that supports or denyes what I want to do or feel. It's like sometimes I need a second opinion. "Okey, it's a good idea", "Oh you not! You know how it will ends", "You are such a messs, but well we have to comcentrate in what we have ahead, can't go backwards". It's like I have a mini Estj livibg with me jaja. I'm Infp.

I have an online friend who identifies as ENFP who has strong aphantasia. That is how I first learned about it, along with a scale she posted, asking how vividly others can see in their minds. I was surprised how little some people could visualize and how vividly others could, as I am somewhere in between. Sometimes I think some brain traits might be a separate layer, not necessarily correlated to a specific type or cognitive function. Though conversations like the video might help to show some correlations. (There is also the variable of people getting their type correct as a factor when trying to make potential correlations… which adds to the challenge.)
