Back in 1995 Sega announced Project Neptune which was slated to be released that same year. Neptune was a new console that combined a Genesis and 32X into a single sleek package. But due to the impending release of the company’s next generation console, the Saturn, Sega decided to cancel Neptune. So 27 years later, due to a lot of hard work from the retro modding community, we now have a way to make our very own Sega Neptune!
Hey everyone! One thing I failed to mention in the video was that the “modular” Neptune build that I did was largely developed by PCBAssembly99. He pioneered the use of a 3BP in conjunction with the Neptune mod and also the unique method of flipping over the 32X board while using the longer ribbon cables so that it can be used with the 90 degree cartridge connector. He also made a bill of material that you can reference which has all the items I used in my tutorial for the Neptune build, which is linked here: www.mediafire.com/file/tupgzr...
He also posted a build guide on GBATEMP linked here: gbatemp.net/blogs/blog/sega-n...
Again, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this project!

A custom motherboard PCB with the components from the 32X, CD and MegaDrive would be neat. Making it fit the SEGA Saturn shell would also remove the need for completely custom shell designs, given brand new SEGA Saturn shells are being made. Any necessary cuts like the cartridge slot wouldn't need to be done to original shells. And I'm sure the Sega (Mega)CD II's disc mechanism could be made to work in there too.

@@Dan-TechAndMusic This is actually what I was thinking. Repurposing the Saturn's cartridge slot (which was rumored to initially be a backwards compatibility Genesis/Mega Drive slot, no idea if that was ever proven legit or false) would be brilliant. I think it would only be a difficult build in GETTING a spare Saturn shell for most people.

  • @MovieEggman

Making the Sega Saturn backwards compatible with Genesis, Sega CD and 32X games should’ve been a no-brainer, especially when for years I thought the cartridge slot on top of the console was for inserting Genesis and 32X games.

With a large enough community to buy the mod shells, injection can become viable, but you do need quite a lot of people to fork out the tooling (think quite a few thousands of dollars in molds).
I imagine silicone mold vacuum injection might be a good middle ground (or rather, for low volume, the perfect solution).

Amazing build as always! One tip for tapping bosses "screw posts" is to take a Dremel with a cutoff wheel and very carefully cut a small slot in the screw threads. This creates a way for the plastic shavings to not jam up inside the boss which can crack it. Given that the shell is SLA resin you have to be even more careful when doing this as I have exploded many SLA bosses and had to epoxy the ever loving hell out of them and re-tap them.

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 6 місяців тому +1

Can relate with how annoying tapping SLA prints can be... I've used an actual tap 1st time I did it, and did a few test pieces before to check the hole clearance.
Even with a tap (in fact what you did with slotting a screw, just like those PC fan screws that do exactly that), when the hole was just 0.1mm too small I cracked the damn test part, and increasing that 0.1mm made it a bit lose...
I wonder what kind of techniques would be effective to add threaded inserts to resin prints, maybe just epoxy gluing them and that's it?

I wish Sega would have delayed the Saturn to make it a better 3D machine as the PSX destroyed it and for the time being released the Neptune. I would actually have loved it if Sega had a Neptune that also integrated the Sega CD. A Genesis/32X/CD in one would have been awesome. This could have been a console to take on the Super Nintendo for a while longer. What Sega could have done is ensure that the Neptune's software was compatible with the Saturn.
When the Saturn eventually was released, you also released a compatible CD player for the Neptune bringing both in line (any extra grunt the new Saturn came with was enclosed in the CD attachment).
Maybe it happened in a parallel universe.

Quite an incredible project, to bring to existence something that never hit the market, and not even having in hand the museum prototypes to base the shell on, is sure a work of passion.
About injection molding the shells: the models themselves are there already, but the cost of the tooling is astronomic. You'll want to gather at least 1000 buyers to fork out the tooling for it to be worth it, since it can go into several thousands of dollars, specially at the size of the device. I work with that kinda stuff so I don't get shocked anymore when I see a small product tooling cost go upwards of 40 thousand dollars (rather, I'm glad it's that CHEAP. It can get insane with big parts).
One option for reducing the tooling cost for lower production batches/final prototypes is silicone molds with vacuum injection, you don't get near as many parts of the same molds, but the cost is far lower (albeit I haven't used this service yet to know the difference in costs). Still, you'll be forking quite a bit of cash so it takes a community to join up and pre-purchase it.

    Spot on!
The mockup made by Sega for the only existing photos of the Neptune is sitting in a museum somewhere in the US. There's a video on UA-cam showcasing it from all angles. I wonder if the design of this fan-build took it into consideration, or if there's room for slight changes in the future because of it.

Great video! I would LOVE to see something on mobile modifications! My dream has always been to build a great-looking mobile Dreamcast with plugins to allow for a second controller and output to a TV (basically, it can connect to TV and you can play with friends). I saw a few Dreamcast builds that had beautiful screens, wonderful looking ergonomics to the progenitor controllers and even usable VMU insert. That was years ago, but it showed it could be done. What I have NEVER seen done was the external plugin ability for a TV connection. You pull this off, count on my monthly subscription for life. The Dreamcast community is still very much alive (and heartbroken when the Dreamcast 2 was vaguely announced). Stay amazing!

Awesome tutorial! If only Sega had released this instead of the separate 32X & focused on this only (due to backward compatibility being readily available on it) instead of dividing their forces between it & the Saturn, they could've thrived a few more years & maybe would've been in a much better position with 3rd party developers going into the Dreamcast. I was jacked for the Neptune & when it didn't come to be, I focused on the SNES & eventually the N64 until I got the Dreamcast in late 2000. I was hoping Sega would do a Neptune Mini to make up for not releasing it then & have 20-25 Genesis games, 10-15 32X games & a handful of Sega CD games built in, with the ability to add more ROMs to it thru download. Would be cool & I'll bet hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people would be willing to shell out plenty of $ for it

One thing to consider: Before assembly of the unit, apply the water slide decals first (making sure there are no bubbles), then go over the entire thing with 2-part clear gloss automotive urethane to blend the water slides into the finish, making them appear to have been silkscreened. After fully curing, go over it once more with a light, even coat of matte clearcoat. It will look even more like factory, and will be very well protected to boot.
Of course, Ideally, it would be even better to have the logos painted during the mfg process :) Still an AWESOME build and product, and I would have absolutely loved to have one of these back in the day paired up with model 2 sega CD I had. Hell, I'd still love to have one. Now someone just needs to do the same for the Pluto!

There is 1 working actual prototype of neptune out there, no one knows where it is though. No ones seen it, so its hard to say what happened to it. It was confirmed that they had gotten the prototype working, but by then the saturn was ready for mass production, finding the original neptune would be a huge gaming find.

So paying that price is a matter of passion and dedication to the project) It looks EXACTLY how I have always imagined it to be.

20:46 Because "Triad Power Supply" is incredibly vague and unhelpful: A 9V / 1.3A power brick, center positive. Don't go below this amperage, but any amperage higher is safe.
Sega's default brick is 10V at 0.85A (8.5W), and while the voltages aren't exact, you need those additional 3.5W to keep the 32X happy. You'll need to adapt the 5.5mm/1.2mm barrel plug to a EIAJ-03 4.75mm/1.7mm barrel plug used on the Model 2.
And be careful not to mix it up with the Sega CD power supply, as it has a negative center polarity and will make either part very unhappy.
