    Went rafting back in 2022 and 2023 on the upper Gauley and fell out both times at pillow rock but it was an amazing experience overall, I'm defiantly coming back again this year. Also real amazing vid man!

    Did this many years ago, three married couples with a female guide. All our female paddlers were at or below 100 pounds. Only one man went out of the raft. We watched his clawing hands as he was pulled under a rock. You should have seen the look on his wife's face. He surfaced beside the raft far downstream as the guide was getting a very concerned look on her face while standing up and searching everywhere, with throw bag in hand. We were all searching.
    The year we went, water was very low. Not sure if that makes it harder or easier. Great memories, especially of the beautiful green waters and all the desperate paddling on command.
    The New River was well worth doing as well. The hydraulics on the New River are mountainous, standing waves that put an eleven man raft on end with no horizon in sight. The Gauley is tight, rocky and mean.

      Lower the water is the more dangerous it is. The undercut rocks are the real danger.

    Went on the upper and lower a few years ago..it was worth every penny.
    Definitely a bucket list item..

    Awesome video! We’re heading there in a week. Not as extreme like the October dates.

    Lots of really epic air braces, one guide swimming, and a 100% dump. Not bad for a shipment of carp.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing. What happened after the Raft flipped? How difficult was it for everyone to get back in ?

    • @DustySmalls
      @DustySmalls  2 роки тому +6

      That was the second time we flipped that day. What you see in the video was us going down a class 5 rapid backwards. I was sitting right beside our guide and he kept saying oh sh1t, oh sh1t. So I knew we were in for it. I came up under the the raft and it was a very intense 15 seconds bc I couldn't find air but I eventually did. It was actually the last rapid of the trip so we all swam ab 600 yds to take out.

      This looks like scary fun. I think me and my guys will add this to our list. Glad you found air.

    The guide at 11:08 tried so hard to steer left to avoid the sideways hole HAHAHA but it was too late and i bet he was like screw it, might as well run it backwards if it means avoiding the hole

    Class 3 intermediate looks intense enough for me!! Class 4 and 5 are rough lol

      @DustySmalls  2 роки тому +1

      yea man, it can get intense real fast. But if you've rafted before and it decent shape you should be fine.
