As a kayaker for some 50 years in the UK. I have paddled most of the white water available in this country and some in Austria. Those guys paddled the theme park of kayaking. It is a very dangerous sport.. I lost a good mate and paddling buddy to a hidden tree in a fall. I've been pinned, my kayak has folded, I've dislocated my shoulder, broken ice off my kayak... Its a drug.. The sound and smell and the adrenaline are incredible.. That was a fantastic film. Top men in awesome rivers. Thank you... Stay safe x
Ditto... Although I had some fun WW kayak adventures in my 20s/30s... Partially explains why my back/neck/shoulder are now blown out...(snowboarding, mtn biking, and hobiecat racing also took it's toll) lol. Have fun kids - just be aware you'll probably eventually 'pay for it' in your 40s. :-)
Incredibly well done kayak movie, well done. I love how it is done in a way that actually makes it somewhat understandable to non-kayakers. I'm a kayaker myself so at times it was a little oversimplified but totally worth it. Hopefully this reaches some of the non-kayaker audience and they learn something about the amazing sport and become interested in it. Also perfect pace, slow enough to give each major rapid the respect it deserves and understand how incredibly difficult what these guys are doing is, but changing it up enough to keep it interesting and not repetitive. Hope to see some more kayak movies from Teton Gravity, keep it up!
Good to see Teton Gravity research back in the kayak film game . Worked on the first Trillagy in 2001-2004 . Cool seeing Trey Chase name in the credits too and now working for TGR . That hets long line rescue was impressive and having to overnight with a shoulder still out would be a horrible experience. I’ve managed to get my own shoulder back in every time except the first one while kayaking .
Im not sure that the technology of our days would support this kind of kayaking. The materials today and the single piece construction can withstand the forces of these falls. I dont think wood could take it.
Todd, i was tought whitewater kayaking from a men in his 75. He is still coming down class 4 rivers with us at the age of 78. If you really want to. Start it now!
Always great to see the next generation of kayakers plying the waters. I was too big to do much with it, but did get a few trips down the Little White Salmon in the early days, along with some other first descents in the PNW. To run big drops, it's best to be either very thin, very short or both. It seems to me we are at or near the boundaries of waterfall height, but maybe someone finds and runs a 200' drop. We shall see. These would probably be the guys to do it.
You rock boys! I've reached that place in my kayaking adventures. Where the Royal Gorge will be out of my reach. But I'm still lovin'the KAVU days on class IV.
Thanks! I live in ROUNDUP and I can attest to the fact with GOD as my witness this is the world-class kayak paradise of AMERICA an nobody hardly knows that but these guys do and so do I !
Awesome video. Very well done. I liked the narration that built a story line vs clips and clips of waterfalls which happens in alot of videos. Plus who doesn’t like to see a BA truck splash through a few puddles while we’re at it
Yes yes yes! Whitewater paddler from the UK here! So rad to see a prestigious company like TGR support content like this!! Mega paddling lads, nothing like that in the UK so super inspiring.
Amazing courage! I can fully understand why these guy chase these dangerous water falls and rapid. Don't know if that is typical, but i like how they study the critical sections ahead of attempting them.

Fixing popped shoulder is an essential skill on wild water ;)
Big Timber Creek has lots of fun rapids upstream from The Pinch too. It's a long hike up, but has some more great drops like Double Drop, O's Woes, Fine Line, etc. If you are up near Big T, be sure to check out Hells Canyon on the Boulder also.
Great video! Couldn't help but chuckle when the one guy says "I've been wanting to run this since I was twelve"....I'm thinking that was two years ago. LOL
I used to paddle in the late 70's. Kudos to you guys for your good judgement, from walking without shame, to doing the needful for the injury. Y'all got skills 👍
Bruh, reminds me of last summer the bros and me yacked off the gnarliest canyon on the Grand Canyons north side and it was a 100 foot drop and it was by far the heaviest yack sesh I’ve ever experienced!!! It was totes gnar flanked bruh bruh!! Keep yackin brahs and float that white crick!!!
That was an incredibly done documentary, and absolutely National Geographic level professional, but both runs down Big Timber Falls were simply art on the part of the kayakers in and of themselves. No, not excellent, not masterful; but rising to the level of fine art such as you would expect from Picasso or Rembrandt. As for the documentary itself, anyone would be hard pressed to find any fault with it. Production values were spot on, lighting and camera angles were about as good as it gets anywhere, and the balance of sound and background music were perfect. The music matched the general feel of each segment perfectly and was well placed to elicit emotions in the viewer, yet didn't overpower the ambient sounds of the river. To get all of that right with a crew which was so limited in number is something you don't see every day. I do not think I'm exagerating when I say that this would have done well at Sundance and Cains. I'm pretty sure it would have been in contention for one of the top spots at either one of those film festivals for an award for best documentary of the year. We should all be grateful, for this is as good as it gets, and it was focused on our sport!
you can tell by how the water behaves. These guys have years of experience in reading water and understanding what obstacles are under it, based on the water's behavior on the surface.
@@HillDogTV No problem. Sometimes, you also may have to check out the waterfall's pool at low water to determine what's at the base of the falls, or a good old fashioned probe with a long stick.
@@xlr8r17 i figured there was a slow reccy trip involved to check it all out an even 'dive' under some of these waterfalls?? i dunno, its fuckin crazy an the rocks can move at any time really!
Yes, there's always a risk a log or boulder could shift. This risk is present in class I-V and is part of what makes rivers inherently risky. The best boaters have the skills to mitigate these risks as much as possible.
