- In this video we take the EVH Frankie and elevate this very generic guitar to the next level with some basic procedures and techniques that, combined, end up making a major difference.
In the next video we will cover how to round frets and wire in an actual pick up in the neck position.
Best thing about this channel (aside from the great subject matter) is the pace. It's largely unedited and I am living the experience with you. So good. Thank you
Your video just cost me $2500+. 😁 Now I want an EVH Frankie!!! Excellent video. I learned a lot and am in the process of ordering the guitar and parts!
Not sure where you are getting that the Korean Floyd is made out of aluminum, that’s definitely not the case. It’s steel with a chrome finish. The difference is in the quality of the steel used, and the quality of the chrome plating, both of which I agree with you are much better on the Floyd Rose Original.
Cool that you are taking a guitar that was already personalized for someone else, and putting your own spin on it. I think Ed would approve!
I think I would of sprayed the headstock but that’s just me. Love the look . Great video Marko.
I just upgraded mine with a 1971 quarter and eye bolt strap locks. That's enough for me. No other mods necessarily. Keeping it true to the original. A work of art 😀
Still think it plays as good as my usa evh wolfgang which cost double!
No shit eh. That’s nice to know.
Doing this neck conditioning for my new Wolfgang Signature MIJ. Thanks Marco!!!!
Beautiful job and some great upgrades! Love the headstock! Nicely done and thanks for sharing!
I love your guitar videos, Marko. Please keep them coming.
GREAT JOB - love how clean the entire finger board looks :)
Hello, I can't thank you enough for this video. I did exactly what did with the neck, and it's amazing
great video and shows the passion you have in what you do, makes me want to also put together a DIY guitar. thanks
I like what you did with the headstock. It looks great. You could fill one of the string retainer holes with a wooden dowel and the paint over it to get the new one to work. Cool video, cheers!
Amazing video!
Love this video, good job on that headstock took - it does look amazing. I'm so tempted to get one of these Frankies now! :)
My Frankie arrived recently, and damn, you are right about the necks being so bone dry. It felt so bad to the touch. I first applied the F-one oil and then Z’s Wood Nectar. It really brought the neck to life! Thanks for posting your video on this application as this helped a lot. It completely transformed the feel of the neck, and I can also see the flame of the wood on my neck 🔥(The Frankie guitar is badass)
I've always argued about real steel and the difference between the original and Korean versions. Awesome job !!!!!
Great video! i learned a lot!
The “dummy” pickup is a real pickup. People have wired it up and it sounds great. I personally won’t do it because on my other guitars I rarely switch to the neck pickup and on the guitars that have a middle pickup I never use either. I dwell in the bridge position. And I think I’m going to remove my d-tuna from the Frankie. I have it on the Bumblebee and I never use it. Except to play the intro to Unchained. But I like the personal touches you added. Was thinking about painting my headstock black to fit the ‘79/‘80 era Frankie. There are photos of the Frankie with the neck from the Bumblebee on it after Eddie removed the black paint from the neck exposing the bare wood. I like how he left the headstock black, tho. I’ve always loved that version of the Frankie with the Bumblebee neck.
Excellent video , a big eye opener for sure. Love the tip about cleaning up the neck with oil and wax - I tried on one of by guitars and its done wonders for it . Thanks . Great insight into this guitar too. Nice one.
Good stuff Marko. The maple neck looks unbelievably dense, almost like mahogany or a dense koa. Nice. 👍🏼 toothpicks and wood glue is a great way to fill the hole for the retainer so you can drill new ones. We seem to have the same hobbies; guitars, guns, cars and I am a DYI person as well.
Awesome video! Thank you!!
i love how happy you are doing this. i think Eddie would love this mod!
Hey Marko...you are so right about an original floyd...alot of shysters online will try to say the cheaper floyds are just as good but its just not true...great job on the Frankie...Eddie would definitely approve!!!!
Marko that looks awesome man! That headstock looks sick - you did a great job! Also, you sold me on the German Floyd Rose. I’ll be installing one on my Frankie 😎👍🏻
Awesome video!! Thx
That headstock was awesome dude... I know this is a couple years old video but do you remember what red you used. .that looks nearly perfect
Awesome! Watching now!
Got to give you kuddos , what you did with guitar , I added quater to and light reflectors to mine
Where did you get the light reflectors ?
And the quarter ?
Very nice guitar! 😁
Great vid bud was fun to watch and was just thinking if your put a chrome floyd on the Wolfgang it would look more like Eddie’s. Lord the vid tho best hour I’ve spent on a vid keep it up
Great job I bought the evh shark guitar 🙂👍
I just got mine after 9 months waiting. Will defo do that neck treatment thanks for the advice... the other mods will follow but will try to keep it as close to the original as possible... where do I send you pics of my neck... its amazingly Flamed... am a bloody lucky Sod! Rock on Man! 🎸🎸🤟🤟😎😎😃😃
Thanks for this very informative video. I just got my EVH Frankie yesterday. We had to wait a bit longer in the UK to get one. I was amazed that it arrived in tune, given it was in a cardboard box. Also it was sent from Mexico which is obviously a warm climate to the cold climate here in the UK that did surprise me. I beeswax my guitars anyway but I picked up a few tips from you as to how to apply. I am going to try the other oil you suggest first. I used to use lemon oil but I have stopped doing that. I already have my brass block from Fu-tone and my original Floyd is on order. I may go for the push/pull from Fu-tone to connect the neck pick up. You mentioned a couple of times that it is a dummy pickup but it isn’t. It is a real pickup, but from what I have heard on you tube it sounds like shit and is probably best to replace. The sad thing is that I wasn’t going to buy an EVH Frankie. I actually had paid a lying scumbag called Dillon at MCG guitars to build me one and he ripped me off. Anyway, I think as you alluded to it is a great looking guitar that just needs some upgrades to make it special. Question - how did you get the red paint for the headstock so close to the colour of the body - was it just good luck?
Just eye-matched the paint. Yes it's a "real" pick up but it sucks badly so I consider it a complete dummy and will definitely change it ;)
@@THEVATICANTShai il codice ral della vernice rossa che hai usato?
Since the fingerboard radius is 12-16 , I’d suggest modding the Floyd’s radius.
Looking up how to shim the saddles should help.
✌🏽
I go into an ASMR trance when dude drools over guitars.
Great job!!!!!! Marko did you clean the neck up (less of that dirt look)? If so how did you do it
I have no idea how somebody can "Personalized" that Guitar when is really a EVH Classic Guitar (that paint job is just EVH! ...I just would paint the body different! ...but the upgrades I think take this gtr to a new level! cool vid
It's basically taking the Mexican Frankie and attempting to turn it into the Peavey Frankie from years ago, as far as the hardware. And still less expensive than that.
Of course Eddie would approve. When you get to know what you like in a guitar you modify it. The first thing I did to a $4,000 Les Paul was modify it so I am with you Marko.
Looks awesome
should've started with black, then white, then red. The hardware upgrades was a good idea...the headstock paint job, de-valued that guitar. But as long as you're happy with it.
Did you have to replace the 2 dowels that hold the screws in that pivots the floyd rose trem? or do the new screws fit straight in?
That dirt was powder graphite that is used to relic the neck.
Hi Marco great video just about to oil and wax my Frankie how long did u leave the oil till u applied the bees wax ?sameday
Do give it eight hours, at least :-)
What paint brand did you use for the headstock? Red, Black, White? Nice video Thanks from Dallas, Texas!
I usually apply boiled lanceed oil on my guitar necks.
👌🎸
The neck pickup in it is usable they didn't put in a dummy they just didn't wire it up but wires are there for it to be wired!
That's interesting. It's cool they did that!
Yeah, the wire leads are simply tucked under the mock switch in the center pickup cavity; they are even cut length, for running into the control cavity.
Oh yeah, I am going to have the back plate engraved with my initials "RAH!"
Can you review a kiesel Jason Becker?
I am waiting for my gotoh tuners and other parts before my harley benton st-62 gets the treatment. Already got the floyd, as the guitar is cheap i didnt want to spend that much
Got mine yesterday. First thing I noticed was the floyd. Felt cheaper then my usa wolf. Just use the oil and wax to lighten the neck? I also wan to remove the evh logo on headstock. I want to put the eye hooks but afraid it won't fit in the evh case I got with it.
Cool video. Not sure I will be painting my headstock when it arrives though... One thing I dont understand is that you spent a bunch of money on upgrades but then painted the headstock with a brush???. Should of splurged an extra $15 on 3 cans of spray paint...
I purposely used paint as it sits better on the headstock after sanding than spray paint. Paint goes deeper into the wood and will look deeper longer ;)
Hi. What didn't you like about EVH FLOYD if I may ask? I thought that an original Floyd saddles are not very compatible for DTuna. Not enough space under the saddle?
I've read in the past that Eddie preferred the Korean Floyd Rose to the German one, because he thought it sounded better.
I've read a lot of bullshit about Eddie too. If he prefered the Korean ones, that's what would come on the USA EVH Wolfgangs.
@@Mr911Medic The USA Wolfgangs have same EVH branded tremolo as the Wolfgangs made in Mexico. 👍🏻

But some people get hung up on "generic" this or that.
In the immortal words of one Edward Van Halen, "if it sounds good, it's good"...RIP GOAT
Sorry to hear that this Frankie wasn't satisfactory.
I just got mine after 6 months of wait, yes no case, but after tuning it, I haven't been able to put it down! Didn't know that the floyed was or wasn't this or that, didn't care!
Don't need reflectors or a quarter.. those aren't going to give you "that" sound we all love.
To each his own!
I have always wanted a copy of Ed's iconic guitar and now I have it and I didn't have to pay $25,000
Thank you Edward Van Halen for your music and for what you have done for the electric guitar!
@@Mr911Medic Pretty sure they actually are Korean ones.
nice work on the neck and the fingerboard which was much too dark and black.
Don't put a switch!! Get a push pull pot if you want that neck pup
Yes, you’re right that’s what I’ll do. Great idea.
yeah, no room for that
i woulduse spray paint not house paint.
hi did you change the gotoh tuners?
Is it ok to oil and wax the neck while it’s still on the guitar
I just got mine last week and can’t get rid of the fret buzz on the 6th fret…it is awful
Do you know the heel width on that?
Marko, that neck looks amazing! Why in God's name would they put all that SHIT on it....mines getting the treatment
People never seem to understand that anything less than an Original Floyd Rose will never feel like the original. The FR1000 may be stable, sure, but the micro tuners feel terrible and even the springs they use are inferior. These things are done to save the manufacturer money. If you want the real deal, an OFR kit is a small price to pay. Same goes for the pickups, tuners, etc. This isn't snobbery, it's just economic fact.
A Frankie (of ANY type) should NOT have a truss wheel. This is a $1200 guitar...max (hand-relic'd or not) The guitar you made it into is a $2K guitar...but swap-out that hot-ass Wolfgang pickup for an EVH Frankenstein (which is what it should have came with in the first place).
If i have to hear one more video say it’s a great guitar even though its made in Mexico, im going to lose my shit. For the record, the US produces a lot of shitty guitars too, so not everything made in the US is up to par, some are below standard.
Hardware is a great idea but you killed any value when you screwed with the head stock. No thanks
You can put $5000 in upgrades, your still not gonna be as good as EVH.
I have a EVh franky as well as the EVH 5150. I'll keep my just like bought them. Modding isn't gonna increase the value.
This video has zero to do with making you a better player or increasing the value of the guitar.
no really, it's about modding a guitar to get a particular sound. Hate to break it to you Eddies sound came from his hands. He could play anything and still sound like EVH. I personally don't care. Mod away, then list it on reverb at an inflated price just to profit off something that was good from the Factory.
The tremolo on these things is absolute garbage. Charge more and use a decent tremolo.
Fuck me no neck needs that much oil your learn when ya frets go lose😊
