as a mechanic the functional reason to cuff the jeans is when you work in the garage all day you don't want the bottom of your jeans soaked in oil.

jensen schack wtf you wearing jeans in the shop for anyways? Get some work pants, million pockets, built in knee pads, oil doesn’t ruin them

Back in the 50s, various inseam lengths were not always available on jeans, so it was either have them hemmed or cuff them. Cuffing was the budget friendly option. Also, since kids / teens were often still growing, cuffing ensured the jeans could still be worn over a long period of time since they could just be unrolled.

Back in the 50s they'd tuck cigarette packs into the cuffed sleeves btw

Yes we did. Because if we put them in our back pocket you can forget and smash the cigs, we couldn't put em in the boots either because lucky strikes were hard cover so that'll hurt your feet. So sleeves it is ❤️🤙🏽

As a greaser, I can say that this video covers the clothing, though I find that my subculture has been turned into a joke, and a fashion trend that people sport without knowing anything about it.

I mean, the background music says enough about how much of an actual greaser this kid is. How many he has seen outside of movies. And about the clothing. How can boy forget the tucking of the shirt.

Thank you Adrian, our subculture isnt a Halloween costume. Just because you dress like a greaser doesn't make you one, there's other parts to it, and just because you watched Grease makes you a greaser. So please, stop taking our culture as a joke, or dress up. Cause we're still alive, and you will get pressed out here lol

I admire the fact you didn't tell everyone how to look like a costume greaser. Just the basics. The issue though is this subculture is very much alive and kicking and if you're going out dressing like this, you'll probably get shit if you don't know what it's about or have any idea of what the culture is. It's just like being a punk, you can weed out the fashion ones from the real ones if they don't know what the music scene is, *cough cough* rockabilly *cough cough*. All I can say for the viewers is to not act like something you aren't. Be yourself, you hussies. Trends never last but tradition usually does.

Half of these cubes aren't even real greasers, don't even have any grease... but hey, I won't get too frosted over it.
Gotta mention the hair, cat. If you don't got the cut already, ask your barber for 2-3 inches on the sides and about 3-6 on top, depending on what style you comb it into. For products I recommend Royal Crown, Murray's Superior, Sweet Georgia Brown, Brylcreem, Groom and Clean, Wildroot Cream Oil, Reuzel, or any other traditional pomades and greases.
And NO, you don't just slick everything back. You do a pompadour, or if you're going for the more traditional hairstyles roll everything up and back to make a jelly roll. Don't forget the Duck Ass in back. For a more detailed description, check out the channel Kryptic Art. He's a true slick, and he's been doing this shit since high school. Stay greasy! :)

I think one of the reasons they roll the shirt sleeves is because they needed somewhere to put cigarette packs so they put the cigarette box within the cuff of the sleeve and I guess it's changed over time to just being a stylistic choice.

Let's be honest, every single greaser out there and I am aware it's a very big subculture, but they are the posers 🤷‍♂️ this ain't the 50s anymore, greasers are not a thing anymore. If you feel like a legit greaser just by having a blue collar job and dressing like in the 50s, to that I say YOU are the poser one. And I would call the same if i see anyone dressing like a prohibition gangster, or a 60s hippie, non of that is a thing anymore, you wana keep dressing like that until your last breath? Knock yourself out, but don't call anyone a poser, because you are the biggest one lol

Idk if it qualifies as a "practical" reason for cuffing sleeves, but my grandpa used to be the epitome of greaser and he cuffed his sleeves around a pack of cigarettes, he said that they where easier to get to than in his pants pocket, also he could get a cigarette without sticking his greasy hands in his pocket (he worked as a mechanic then as an assembly line worker in a car factory). Also yeah, he probably cuffed them to show off his guns.

you sir, have taken a subculture that is not only in my family but in my blood, and made it into a sad excuse for a look. the clothes are all there, but the attitude and the reasons have been mangled and forgotten. also, greasers like myself typically prefer boots such as harness or engineer boots to your sad excuse for a boot which has the name of a girl.

Please don't wear white shirts nor converse. You will just be called a poser, and it looks like you just started. I recommend black, grey, striped or car shirts, and boots, preferably engineering boots. And don't roll your jeans so much as shown in the film grease (or in the video) that's just some poser, stereotype shit. (you can roll it up, but not tooooo much).
edit: maybe throw in a flannel shirt or something, preferably at fall and winter. and btw, to rock the greaser clothes, go with leather jacket at evening(ish) late summer, fall and winter. And rather a denim blue/black jacket at mid spring(depends on where you live) and summer

The reason you cuffed your jeans is because originally greasers all rode Harleys and wore heavy engineer boots. Marlon Brando was the first.

Greaser is classic american fashion. it will always look good. t shirt, slim tapered jeans, and boots or canvas shoes like converse and pf flyers or some basic, non swaggy vans.
