Did they change it because Olivia Newton John is Australian? And if so, couldn’t they have changed her surname to Daniels, Darwin, Dawson or some other English-sounding surname to keep the Sandra Dee/Sandra D. connection?

    • @frncy54

I think she were trying to say the Sandy was like Sandra Dee a very real well know actress of that time and was considered very virginal. Sandra Dee was in many movies and probably the most famous was- Gidget. So in my opinion Rizzo was criticizing Sandy by calling her Sandra Dee dripping with virginity. She mentions Doris Day and Rock Hudson also famous at the time.

12:22 I want to address/defend the "Sandy Transformation Controversy" part of the film- consider that all Sandy does is change her outfit to literally "let her hair down" compared to Danny's year long attempt to be "worthy" of the Good Girl- he stops hanging out with his friends as much (as evidenced in the final scene when he comments on their hubcap stealing outings), he embraces multiple extracurricular activities to the point that he gets a letter in track, he attempts to settle down and pin/ring her rather than play the field, and (presumably) his grades improve as a result of not skipping class with his friends. But yes, let's complain that Sandy had to "change herself for a man" just because she throws on some tight pants. Danny shaped up to actually be the guy she thought he was the previous summer, Sandy just proved she was still in love with him despite their social differences.

    Warning Rant Ahead:
This is a consistent critique I always hear about Grease. One of my friends actually says she hates the movie because of it. This saddens me because that is not what the movie is about. First of all we see Danny Zuko change himeself. He became an athlete just to impress her even though it was something he didn't like. He also became more nice and less of an eff boy. People change people. Second, she changed because she wanted to. She wasn't happy with her pure self. If you look at the scene where she is singing "Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee (Reprise)" she says to Frenchie " I'm not happy but I know how I can be (I'm paraphrasing)." So this shows that she changed not for Danny Zuko but for herself. I think that Danny is just a catalyst for this change. We have a lot of people around us that influence us to change or bring up hidden away feelings of wanting change. It is the same with Danny's and Sandy's relationship
If you are still reading this I appreciate you 😊. This is something that has been bothering me forever and needed to get out of my chest. Thank for listening to my TedTalk 😊

You’re not the only one, I feel the same way. As a kid I always thought it was both of them trying to compromise so they could stay together. It always seemed to me as though everyone forgot about the scene right before she shows up in the final outfit. If anyone was changing themselves to “keep” their love interest, it was Danny who did it solely for that reason whereas Sandy had more than one reason for her transformation.

It’s basically a modern-day twist on tales of irony that go way back. Look up “gift of the magi“. Please note, that the denim worn in the movie is mostly stonewashed. In the 1950s there were early examples of that but raw denim was actually the norm. Pre-Washed denim came up later. Raw denim fades different and the jeans are more stiff. The look Brando wears shows a 1950s raw denim cut which was more the common style. Tapered legs like in 9:28 were not popular in the 1950s. One would rather buy a pair of very tight raw denim jeans and 'stretch' them to fit. Or buy a pair that fitted okay and later shrink them onto the body by getting in the tub with them - like our mothers (I was born in 1970s) used to tell us all about.

I’d say it killed way more than half.

I love this historian and her Instagram is amazing!! It’s interesting they switched the musical setting of 1950s Chicago to Los Angeles in the movie.

also her transformation makeup is less 50s and more 70s... as evidenced by her Princess Leia blush. (there's more, but that is the thing that stands out most). It's very bright, and 50s blush was most often almost non-existent.
Great video though! I learned a lot :D

Sandy’s black outfit is inaccurate mainly bc Olivia Newton John picked it out herself

I think the date is slightly off. Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba" was indeed released in 1958, but the release date is November 15, 1958. That sets the film in, at the earliest, the 1958-1959 school year.

Tbh I like the little touch of Danny’s ‘Elvis shoes’. It kind of hints that he’s not as tough and ‘bad’ as he portrays himself.

I love listening to this woman talk. Despite being so young, she definitely knows what she’s talking about.
