  • On this service call a customer calls and complains about the boiler being very noisy. I turn on the hot water boilers circulator pump. The pump starts rattling from what appears to be a broken coupler. Therefore I replace the coupler and motor mounts.

I struggle often. Hard to do repair work and never struggle. I’m just a glutton for punishment on my humble journey

As you were saying..."Most guys would just put a Taco on, but what's the fun in that?"
You were thinking...."I should have just put a Taco on." 😄👌😄👌😄👌 That was a rough one!

In this particular case it is best to get the coupling and the motor mounts because there is no water to deal with.

New taco pump for this application would cost a customer $2500. It’s a 1/4 horse series 60.

Watching you change the old style coupler reminds me why I always use Spiralink Coulplers . They are much easier to
install. This video is almost an advertisement for them. They last longer and are quieter.

for the bushings, large bearing separator(automotive tool) or two prybars across from each other(or screw drivers) 😝
to drive the new one on, use a short scrap piece of pipe, and rubber mallet on the end. solid core pvc or abs pipe works fine.
I forget what size pipe fits it best, (1-1/2" I think) touched the rubber and inner metal ring both, but it may have been a coupling (1-1/4" or 1-1/2")
I use scrap pvc conduit and plumbing fittings(large sockets too) to drive seals on in automotive/off-road equipment. yeah I'm a bit on the (inventive) crazy side and use whatever is laying around or nearby. fabri-cobbler 🥳
actual automotive seal driver sets are useless many times, because of short seal driver cups and long shaft protrusions.

use an adjustable wrench opened just wider than the hub and under the wings, hold down on the wrench handle to take up the motor shaft slop. then a punch, screw driver(cheap socket) and hammer tap the shaft inwards while prying everything outwards. the idea is to not beat up the motor bearings or end play bushings. it's far easier with two people of course, but setting a socket on top, then using one hand on wrench and other on hammer can work ok. pump pliers can work in place of the adjustable wrench.
the set screw likely mushroomed the shaft around it, being loose and all.
yes, two jaw pullers, tie rod end pullers(automotive) and many other things would work for removal, including grinding and splitting it. but not everyone carries that stuff on truck, so use what you have on hand :)

This looks like how it will go when I try to do it vs the b&g demo on a new pump.

Replace the coupler with one from Spiralink and never have a failure.

You need a ladyslipper pry bar

You need a brass hammer to compliment your mallet. Alternate tapping the 2 wings of the cast iron coupler till it wiggles.

I have never seen a reason to change mounts . Several couplers usually go because of being cycled of and on .
