@@TechInspectedI don't think anyone is buying this for trunk space......that's literally the worst argument against why people do not buy them that I've ever heard lol.
@@dy2_str33t_king Thing is, you have to consider that a Miata is essentially the same. But a Miata has a much more vibrant modding and track scene. Which one has a million variants of roll bars? Miata. Which one has affordable hardtops, Miata. Lots of parts and a more standard FR layout, Miata. I know its pretty dumb, but 1 million+ cars sold and being dubbed the best roadster of all time makes the Miata the only real choice here if you're not at all interested in being different just to be different. Heck even Miata power mods are a million to one vs the MR-S because of the much smaller engine cabin on the MR-S. I'm not saying I don't love this car because I do. Toyota is my favorite car brand. But at the same price as a Miata this no-trunk car is a very tough sell. Miata NA has a significant trunk and NB even hides the spare for bigger trunk. On top of that like I said no real reason why you'd choose an MR-S over MX-5. There's almost no positives in the MR-S department hence its not a choice most people make. If the MR-S had a decent trunk, it may have had a fighting chance.
@@TechInspected Where I am you can get miatas for less, or at least more readily available at lower prices. It does make a bit more power though and being mid-engined is a big draw for some. IMO miata if that doesn't matter to you, mr2 if it does.
This is one of my dream builds. For now I want to build a nice 2zzge powered Celica as seen on my channel. \m/ Thanks for featuring such a unique Toyota.
Love these little beasts, seriously considering putting a V6 in mine. I had a great CR-V until I drove one of these, and promptly sold it and found a nice Spyder very professionally repainted in a sorta dark blue/green, sorta teal metallic, that just looks great. And I like this build a lot too, great color, and I love the wheels/tire combo; I know nowadays everybody's into the huge rims and super-low-profile tires, but a properly set-up suspension works with the 'give' of the tires, or however one would describe it, and it just looks much cooler, more authentic, sorta vintage, just way better looking than it would with the huge rims and the almost-gone-roll-of-electrical-tape tires on it... Kudos for going with the excellent wheels, and great overall build! Diggin' it!!
I saw recently that someone k24 swapped a gt86 and claimed it saved 141 lbs of weight. If like to keep a zz in the mr-s to keep the weight down but it isn't a reliable motor. The k adds weight. I'd imagine the boxer as quite a bit then
My first car was the 06 xrs.. i miss that engine so so much. I have a Gt86 right now and the FA20 even with full bolt/tune on setup does not compare to the 2zz in everyday driving or street pulls...
Nice video. The 2ZZ has variable valve lift in addition to variable valve timing (unlike the stock 1ZZ). It is the higher lift cams that provide the extra power at high rpm (in the video, continually refers to variable valve timing, which both the the 1ZZ and 2ZZ share). The 2ZZ with the 6 speed transforms this car; much more fun to drive, and still provides great gas mileage and a similar driving experience to the stock car at lower rpm's.
More mr2 content please! I have an original usdm 95 turbo and there's just not enough mr2 content! There's alot, but have watched it all basically and am always looking for more! Thanks and keep it up!
Awesome to see the Spyder get some love. Sure, many think it's looks are a bit odd, but a few little mods and I think it looks great. Stock ones do well in autox and that 2ZZ swap looks like it really makes it into a seriously fun car.
My XRS is no MR-S, but when valve lift hits.. it doesnt matter! I own a fucking “sportscar” that I sleep in when I get too drunk on the weekends 🤦🏾♂️🙋🏾♂️. I love my 2ZZ!

4 years ago, before the world gone upside down, and the over price imports “tax” if the Mazda MX-5/ Miata and the Honda S2000. This video push me to find a mr2 spyder. Thank you making informed video.❤
Ever drive a supercharged AW11 on the street? Put a 175mm crank pulley on and there's your torque street monster. Been a AW11 owner and enthusiast for 25 years. Still own my 1st one from April 1995 and my track AW11 . I've got myself a Spyder project as I really want to feel if they really do handle as well as they say it does. It's stripped out the moment, hopefully can get into it once I've finished mucking around with my street AW11 upgrade. I am putting a ~350hp 20v blacktop 4agte put in the spyder once I build the engine. That should boogie the chassis along very well.
the MR2 spyder has a really long wheelbase in a SHORT car. You kinda mislabeled it in this video. It's a lot longer than an SW20 which is why it does not snap oversteer. it's very stable. The only reason the car appears shorter is because there's no trunk anymore. they chopped off all that rear overhang and added it to the middle between the wheel (which is what your cargo space behind the seat became)
My buddy has a black one. He's got the same swap from an actual Elise donor and turbo'd it. It only makes 327whp. But in 2200lbs, that's quick. Eats my tuned fk8 up.
I have my 2002 2zz MRS for sale on FB Marketplace. It's pretty much stock outside the engine. I'm moving and need to sell but videos like this one make it really difficult. I've listed it for 10k and the highest offer so far is 9500. I'll probably be kicking myself later for selling it.
Called the roadster in the uk and comes with a lsd. The 2zz is common and high revving and shit as a daily. For a track 2zz. The better option is a k swap all day long. And as for why no 2zz from stock it was down to lotus and Toyota as my old boss was responsible for the project in the uk he was at Toyota for 30 years. What you have i a lotus with a Toyota badge. Round a track a stock 1zz in good hands I have seen destroy much higher hp cars. Including mr2 turbo. A kswap car in good hands is nothing short of amazing.
I know the 2zzge was used in the lotus but that engine has a Yamaha head and a higher rev limite, also unless the engine is built, you never bounce off tev limiter as the 2zz is well known for spinning bearings because the oil pump can't keep up with the engine causing a oil Starve. But yeah, great car and very good engine but I'm more for the 4age 20v more. The 2zz is lighter with 180hp and is has vvt with lift but you have to try and behave yourself with it.
Hmmm....just looked it up. That's crazy. Because the MR2 visually looks smaller than the S2000. I get it with the overhang lengths and everything but still......
Ellis Jackson totally. Although I want to K swap a ZZW30. So it would be about 500 pounds lighter than an s2000, and have more power (if you do it right)
Nice video....I did the 2zz swap on my MR2/S. Upgraded to 6spd and Toyota LSD, but still miss my Gen-II Turbo (1993 M.Y.) It had more room and was sexy vs cute. P-Chi
Very good looking and functional machine. Makes all the right Toyota NA sounds :D Definitely could be described as an MR-Corolla with its low weight and punchy throttle. Overall great review! Guess I had to learn the hard way that its RHD but its all good!
Now I just want to try the gt-s Celica. Back seats and a real trunk for cheap because they never got the love. Wondering how they made the AWD rally model we never got? Is it related to the AWD Toyota van? Just swap in the Prius drive for the back wheels and put the batteries in the trunk. For less than the zz swapped Mr I could have an AWD hybrid design rally car. Well maybe not less but close.
@@gbrav24 There is nothing like a wrong wheel drive... depends on the driver`s skills and what you want from the car... And I bet you will not see me in your rear mirror whit a 300 hp RWD diesel you will see only smoke in front of you, if you are not driving a 450+hp petrol car. :)

Thomas Crouch You could fit if you solid mounted an aftermarket seat to the floor. Ive heard its pretty roomy inside for a compact 2 seater.. Much larger interior than a Miata

Today I race my stock 1zz mr2 spyder against a celica 2zz and I was shocked. We went from a dig and I went 1 car in front of him. I could hear him when he hit lift and shifted but still I remained in front of him until 70mph when I let off the gas. The. He actually passed me
Those cars are monsters on autocross and tight tracks.
these cars are very overlooked in terms of potential, stock they are lacking in power and tbh they look a little high and ugly but with some lower suspension and some tastefull mods and the 2zz or a kseries honda engine they are amazing
Very very very little in ways of storage though. I think people just hate the fact that there's essentially no real trunk/frunk space.
I want to do an MR-S next and FA20 swap it.
Would their be room.... IMO better motors out their unless your going after a baby mid engine Porsche!
Im trying to imagine am H4 engine swapped into an transverse oriented chassis 🤔🤔 yeah good luck with that
oldsklteg it’s been done already... ua-cam.com/video/HNlmqi0Fuag/v-deo.html
Do a K swap lol
I saw recently that someone k24 swapped a gt86 and claimed it saved 141 lbs of weight. If like to keep a zz in the mr-s to keep the weight down but it isn't a reliable motor. The k adds weight. I'd imagine the boxer as quite a bit then
The Elise/Exige had the best version of 2zz 200bhp 3k of lift revved to 8600rpm no need for a k20 then!
Naw. K20 is way better lol.
@@TougeTime indeed. K20 is another 20-30bhp more plus aftermarket support is unrivaled
@@TougeTime is a 2 Litre and more modern 2zz produced in 98.
@@chrismorris268 UK k20 is 197 jdm is 213 not much difference more advanced and modern you have to remember.
@@motogte it's Not just the hp difference. It's the delivery of the tq/power. The honda gearing from the type r is also better
My first car was the 06 xrs.. i miss that engine so so much. I have a Gt86 right now and the FA20 even with full bolt/tune on setup does not compare to the 2zz in everyday driving or street pulls...
Prof. Charles Xavier is driving 2ZZ MR-Spyder now? I love your review man.
I miss my 2zzge mr2 soo much. hoping to bring it back to life this fall :D
Awesome to see the Spyder get some love. Sure, many think it's looks are a bit odd, but a few little mods and I think it looks great. Stock ones do well in autox and that 2ZZ swap looks like it really makes it into a seriously fun car.
looks much cooler with hard top
My XRS is no MR-S, but when valve lift hits.. it doesnt matter! I own a fucking “sportscar” that I sleep in when I get too drunk on the weekends 🤦🏾♂️🙋🏾♂️. I love my 2ZZ!
Tamamo sticker man of culture. Car is badass what a beauty build.
There's one guy that decimate everyone in autocross with these cars they handle extremely well
Always loved the look of these, and have been itching to get one and do this very swap (adding it to an already long list of builds I want to do). Maybe after my Speed3... It looks like a blast.
4 years ago, before the world gone upside down, and the over price imports “tax” if the Mazda MX-5/ Miata and the Honda S2000. This video push me to find a mr2 spyder.
Thank you making informed video.❤
Love the MR-S, also a Sinon sticker on the wing? Noice. 👍
DraKKar right
Ever drive a supercharged AW11 on the street? Put a 175mm crank pulley on and there's your torque street monster. Been a AW11 owner and enthusiast for 25 years. Still own my 1st one from April 1995 and my track AW11 . I've got myself a Spyder project as I really want to feel if they really do handle as well as they say it does. It's stripped out the moment, hopefully can get into it once I've finished mucking around with my street AW11 upgrade. I am putting a ~350hp 20v blacktop 4agte put in the spyder once I build the engine. That should boogie the chassis along very well.
I wonder what the curb weight difference is between the 2zz swapped mr-s and the lotus elise
Anime stickers are the best stickers to put on a car 👌
weebs unite!
@@WcDiu hell yeah!
MR-S still looks great, so do the Tamamo (?).
I plan on building one of these. And it'll be a recreation of Kai Kogashiwa's ZZW30, for all you Project D fans
the MR2 spyder has a really long wheelbase in a SHORT car.
Nobody mentions it, but the MR-S is way more comfortable than a Miata.
A LOT more room because no transmission tunnel. Lateral room is nice!
Big part of it is that the wheelbase is 8 inches longer than the Miata, despite the MR2 being 2 inches shorter overall
Sweet ride, sounds great!!! 2zz all day
Dude looks way better than the lotus for sure!
Love my Celica GT-S but it would be more fun RWD with the 2ZZ
A friend of mine took the last generation Celica and did a RWD conversion powered by the Toyota 1UZ V8.
Drinking game.
Every time you hear Track Car.
Some front end aero would help with the understeer problem if you do it right
Joel Frantz this car doesn’t have a under steer issue, actually rwd usually don’t
I love this platform!!!
ZZW30 has a longer wheelbase than SW20 and S2000
FredaricoIsCooL interesting
Hmmm....just looked it up. That's crazy. Because the MR2 visually looks smaller than the S2000. I get it with the overhang lengths and everything but still......
Ellis Jackson Yup! And I believe it is actually shorter bumper to bumper than a NA Miata. Lol
@@FredaricoIsCooL eh....I'll still choose an S2K over Miata lol.
Ellis Jackson totally. Although I want to K swap a ZZW30. So it would be about 500 pounds lighter than an s2000, and have more power (if you do it right)
That glorious sound.
The US MR 2 Spyder was built in Japan as well.
Nice video....I did the 2zz swap on my MR2/S. Upgraded to 6spd and Toyota LSD, but still miss my Gen-II Turbo (1993 M.Y.) It had more room and was sexy vs cute.
P-Chi
Mine is a scraggly stock 1zz but still turns heads too :)
Makes sense 👍🏻 well done 💞
Nice ride !!! That motor is a gem 💎
The last gen MR2 just looks way too funky for me, the previous gen turbo model though? Gimme.
in the early 2000's blitz made a supercharger kit for this motor guaranteed 300hp.
The more I look at this car the more I want one.
I love the mr2 spyder my is a 2zz swap widebody and it turns head where ever I go
Hey man, just a heads up the ZZW30 actually has a longer wheelbase than the SW20 does
To what other car can the 2zz swap be compare in acceleration ??
Great job. May what's the suspension system you are using on your MR-S ? Thanks
Very good looking and functional machine. Makes all the right Toyota NA sounds :D Definitely could be described as an MR-Corolla with its low weight and punchy throttle. Overall great review! Guess I had to learn the hard way that its RHD but its all good!
Ik vind dit toch een waanzinnige mooi model. Mooier dan zelfs vele supercars.
doing a 2zz swap in the next week. love your car! get rid of the wing! Snap over steer watch out!
just needs a supercharger on it now, like the Elise S . if i get another Aw11 i'll do the 2zz with The Eaton m90 i have spare.
At 5:40 it looks like that jogger flips the MR2 driver off?
did not know zzw30 was cable throttle
that is very compelling, cable throttle is severely underrated in how it enhances driving enjoyment
It went to DBW in 02 I think
Now I just want to try the gt-s Celica.
Back seats and a real trunk for cheap because they never got the love.
Wondering how they made the AWD rally model we never got?
Is it related to the AWD Toyota van?
Just swap in the Prius drive for the back wheels and put the batteries in the trunk.
For less than the zz swapped Mr I could have an AWD hybrid design rally car.
Well maybe not less but close.
budget lotus Elis is the Toyota Celica .... it is with the 2zz motor and it handles very well and .... is way cheaper than anything :)
Front engine front wheel drive car. Not comparable in any way.
Bro youre wayyyyyy the fuck off with that comparison 😂😂 a celica!? 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Yeah but the drive wheels are in the wrong spot. Front wheels have to turn in, brake, and deliver power? I'll see you in my rearview.
6:49 IM rolls up. Wish they would of put a 2zz in the IM.
I like the third gen I remember when they came out I worked at Toyota I wanted one still do !
Which wing is that? It look really good on the MRS
Great vid thx. U Always diliver.
I had a '03 MR2 Spyder SMT back in 2010 and I miss him sadly... By the time it was stock with the 1ZZ, 15" at front and 16" rear (EU spec, or was it 16" front and 17" rear? I can't remember exactly...^^) But even stock and paired with the SMT (I liked it very much, others hate it, I know :P) it was very exact in conering and feels light every time while driving. :)
Allover the MR2 (W3) is mostly underrated. We even had some companies who had made a Turbo-Kits for the 1ZZ (for MT and SMT) by their own to give it 220 to 240+hp depending on
the configuration.
I should really get my hands on one again...^^
Think I might be too tall, 6'5. Damn, want one
Thomas Crouch You could fit if you solid mounted an aftermarket seat to the floor. Ive heard its pretty roomy inside for a compact 2 seater.. Much larger interior than a Miata
@@cxbra I really want one too and I'm 6'5 and only 17 so I'm probably still growing, definitely gunna do that if I get one
I'm 6.3 and no problem driving just a bit tight getting in and out
I know somebody that tried to do this swap by cutting the harness and and without the adapter mount. The car starts but then it runs too hot to drive anywhere
Those hard tops are so hard to find, I had almost no luck when I owned my MRS, came close to a 2ZZ swap but sold it to buy an 06 R53 mini instead.
Just bought an mrs last week and I'm very much considering doing the 2zz swap. Hsvnt even driven the car yet either lol.
Not selling the evo though :D
Damn. Sinon on the car is a nice touch. Cool.
Best girl!
