Today we're driving an incredibly special and well-built 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo SW20! An undeniable classic in the Japanese car world and one of the most striking 90s turbo cars that is still affordable for the capabilities out of the box. Chris has built his MR2 over the years, taking both inspiration and valuable driving lessons from his first MR2 and then using that as fuel to see his midship vision all the way through to completion. While some may argue building a "stance" or "show" MR2 is a step backward for such a legendary mid-engine platform, the sheer power of this 3S-GTE and attention to all other aspects of the build are able to prove otherwise. Plus, Chris is confident we could perform a quick wheel/tire change with some suspension adjustments and hit the track just to prove the dual personality of the chassis. Best of both worlds. Enjoy!

As a fellow SW20 owner, I like this build. It's different, and I think it showcases how versatile the chassis is. It really is a car that can be enjoyed at reasonable speeds and isn't something that you have to push to enjoy; it's equally at home as a cruiser as it is a full on sports car. I can't really describe it other than it's a car that you enjoy every minute you're behind the wheel. While my personal tastes lean towards a different style of build(I prefer more of a street fighter/OEM+ aesthetic), I can absolutely appreciate the care, attention, and love that Chris and other MR2 owners bring to the table.

I feel ya, I had a 02 Ford Focus SVT with the 6spd manual. I recently seen one stock with 5 miles sell for $25,000 several years back. Now I barely find them and they run for $5,000 low blue book up to $40k. I miss mines, I had the Ford racing header, k&n drop filter with a pro charger supercharger and Ford drag spool lsd on mines and 6yrs ago someone crashed into me and completely destroyed the front end and push the motor into the dash.
I owned an SW20 but had much love for the Prelude. I feel the tingles when I see any nicely done 90's JDM ride.

I had a chance to swap mine for a Honda S2000 with a few extra grand in my pocket. I decided against it because I just can’t part ways with my MR2. One day I’ll have both!!
Change out the show wheels, lift it a little and it's perfect. I still like this more than the GR86. A modern version of this would be ridiculous.
I'm redoing a bunch of my MR2. And yes, my main theme is to try and make it more modern. The #1 thing that dates these cars is typically the large plastic wings, in this guys case it's the stance. To each his own, that's what he likes.

With all the Gazoo line-ups Toyota has developed from the GR86, GR Yaris, GR Supra, etc. I would love to see Toyota to develop a new MR2 while keeping it real to its predecessors.
The likelihood of them building something even close to as beautiful as this is almost nil. Even just a vehicle without popup headlights would ruin the mr2 name if they tried to revive it

5:30 The highly angled and flashily projecting wheels look so ugly to me, they're not suitable for racing too, The owner of the car has no taste at all. However, I respect any taste one prefers.

Nice car 😍. I really want an MR2 one day !!!!!! And. Lexus ISF blue LOVE THAT COLOR hahha. Used to ride in a red ISF 08… loved that car. And i like Chris’ take on having a fast car for more adrenaline and then a fast car for more enjoyable drives but still some nice kick !

I agree, hopefully he does the "track thing" he mentioned and takes those ridiculously cambered oddities off this otherwise beautiful car. Guarantee that thing handles like crap in the corners. Although he prob will not do that as the track really is hard and beats up on a car (brakes, tires, but also the paint and windshield).
I seen my first MR2 in 1992. I still absolutely love them. So yeah. That kid might be an enthusiast for the rest of their life.

I drove a 91 NA T-top from 1994 til 2018, T-top issues I found are, body flex(badly and squishy noise) roof leaks and the glass disruption of the roof line profile. I painted the glass to match the paint job and it looks awesome. I now sold the T-top and got me hard top.

A '93 MR2 turbo (SW20) is still THE car I must own in my lifetime! I'll even take the non turbo if I got it for cheap enough and autocross the hell out of them. I would rebuild a 3rd gen 3S-GTE and toss it in there (dont forget that heater hose mod!). Its insane that Toyota made this car!

Funny how i found this video, as this is currently appening to me. I totald my mr2 about a month ago, and building my new one to be a fast goodlooking car, as a reminder to drive a bit slower, so people can enjoy the build;)

Badass MR2! But All I see are complaints in the comments, This is why we build cars how we want if we had a certain guideline to follow we would all be cookie cutters and that’s boring as hell.
I love the stance of it. And the wheel fitment is dope! This isn’t that crazy at all I’ve seen some ridiculous cars that are definitely what I would consider “looking like it’s broken” and probably a hazard to drive but this is pretty tame.

Looks great EXCEPT fitment. I’m all for a little camber and some low. But those wheels need to be tucked, and 4.5 degrees of camber, max for a “performance” car

Autopista! A few brands make this style. Such a good look, great way to improve the original early OEM look.
@@RoadsUntraveled nice, I appreciate it. I really do like the original look to my 91, but it kinda gives it a more exotic look. When I get a gen 3 rear clip I'll decide from there, but the autopista is definitely a top contender 👍

The one thing i dont get.....why do a stance build with a sports car???? I can see why a VIP build is a thing with like a ls400 or some other 4dr car...but an mr2, miata, s chassis....why??? Legit question because i dont understand.
But by the same token, why do a stance build with a VIP-style car such as an LS400 or Crown or something... Most just ruin the right comfort and quality in the process. Which destroys the original intent of the vehicle. Much like stancing a sports car destroys the original intent. To each their own! haha. For some it's the community of shows/meets and having that "wow" factor visually.
I guess.....so really stance is the herpes of the car scene.
I prefer a manual steering rack that little heavy weight feels safer than light weight steering...

I hate stance but that's just me. It's not my car. I used to have one of these years ago. Great car. You def wanna hold onto these if you can get one clean or resto.

I'm with you on this one, but it really depends on your goal with that car. Yeah, I'd much rather build and drive an MR2 setup to ride nice and take corners hard without fear of tearing the fenders off.. but I think it's cool Chris has the best of both worlds with his STI + MR2. Also he told me he's down to swap wheels and tires out sometime and do some more aggressive driving 😁 can't say no to that
Ya the Stanced community is hilarious to me. Why spend thousands of dollars to make your car look like it is broken while simultaneously ruining the driving dynamics of your sports car. Lowering a bit and adding a little camber to improve dynamics I am all for.
Not unpopular opinion for those that know better but it’s a fun look for kiddies that just want the stares. Lol

Mines mostly stock jdm mr2 with its oem 3rd gen 3sgte unmodded, so no features for it. Beautiful car but make the car more streetable suspension and wheels-wise. Mines lowered and i do not like it
