2ZZ - Swapped Toyota MR2 Spyder 5-Speed - One Take

  • This Toyota MR2 Spyder is a stock-looking example with a secret: the "Good Toyota engine," the 2ZZ 1.8L four-cylinder used in the Lotus Elise and Corolla XRS has been swapped in to match with the stock 5-speed manual gearbox. As we learn, if Toyota had made this engine standard in the MR2, it would have been awfully competitive with the much more expensive Lotus Elise.

    The 6 speed box does make a big difference. The way the 2ZZ delivers it's power, you really need the closer ratios to stay on lift. Also, lift is 6,200rpm, not 6,700. At least it is in proper JDM/Euro/Aus 2ZZs with 190hp. Not sure if the lift is different in the weaker 180hp US 2ZZs.

      BTW, I'm planning on doing this from the opposite way around: I daily a 2ZZ/6 speed Corolla Sportivo, and am looking for a cheap MR2 to swap the gear from the 'Rolla into. I'll likely find an MR with the crappy SMT gearbox and a blown engine, so I can get it as cheap as possible lol

      @frederickschulze8014 6 днів тому +1

      Yeah, the higher rpm redline of the 2zz pairs much better with the 6 speed. It basically means you can use the 10-15% shorter gears, but you're not shifting any more often than the 1zz because 15% higher redline.

  • @evan937
    @evan937 6 років тому +11

    A little insider information. Lotus made Toyota agree not to put the 2ZZ in the MR2 because they didnt want it hurting the Elise/Exige sales. These are still an incredible driving car either way. Also to note, the 1ZZ is a very reliable engine. They only burn oil due to poor maitenence.

    • @MR2SpyerJournal
      @MR2SpyerJournal 6 років тому +9

      No, they burn oil mainly due to 1) poor piston ring design and 2) the pre-catalytic converter breaks down and gets sucked back into the exhaust, which is why a lot of 1ZZ spyder owners eliminate this when they first get the car. Also, the 1ZZ rods are like tooth picks.

    • @evan937
      @evan937 5 років тому +4

      Well I won't argue with you about certain issues with the MR2 cats. As well as the piston ring design flaw in the 1ZZ. I do feel the need to defend the engine itself though. I have owned 3 different 1ZZ FE vehicles, none ever had oil burn issues. My current Corolla is 19 years old with 250k. It still burns No Oil. I don't deny the defect, just that proper maintenance and care helps these engines oil burning. They are truly not as bad as people say.

    My 1ZZ-FE has 125k and it's not sipping oil or leaking. It's not the smoothest sounding engine I've ever had but it's about as noisy as any other I4 I guess. It's had a header on for a while so I don't think the pre-cat issue ever happened with this one. It's a 2003 model year so maybe it'll go ahead and squeak on for another 100k. :) It's a weekend car and usually doesn't get above 4k RPM so I don't think it's going to have too many problems. I'm glad I sold a car for $9k so I could buy the MR2 for $6k and a daily for $4k. It's really working out.

    Love my 2003 MR2 5 speed. These cars are seriously underappreciated, and they can be modded to the moon and back for not much money. With a small turbo kit and 6 speed LSD on the stock 1ZZ motor, you can easily put down 200whp and have a fast, fun car.

  • @pete9014
    @pete9014 6 років тому +6

    I have one of these, same year, same color, bought it for $800 after the 1zz threw a rod. Did the 2zz swap myself...probably the easiest swap out there. One custom motor mount, some light machining on the shift mechanism, re-pin about a dozen wires and add 3 new ones for the lift control. You can buy an (overpriced) swap header or modify one from a Celica GTS yourself. All told, I spent only about $4500 or so on the car and a few weekends.
    The '02 Celica GTS ECU actually revs to 8600, not 8200 as the video mentions. Anything more than that and the stock oil pump explodes.
    The 6 speed C60 trans is critical, the closer ratios let you stay on lift (just barely) between gears. Find one with a helical LSD if you can. Without it, my car will spin a wheel on damp surfaces when the lift hits in 2nd gear and you need to be patient rolling on the throttle out of low to medium speed corners.
    It's about 200lb heavier than the 2nd-gen Elise and not nearly as stiff.
    People do the K20 swap on these occasionally and there is aftermarket support for it. To me the added expense and complication combined with a hefty weight penalty (150+ lbs) in an already rear-biased car isn't worth it. SCCA puts you in the worst possible class if the logo on your motor doesn't match the one on the car and I'm sure other groups do as well. IMHO 180-200 HP feels about right for this car, a K20 could add significantly to that but I think it would fundamentally change the nature of it, making it less fun to drive. If you really need more power you could add forced induction to the 2zz and probably still come out ahead of the NA K20 in terms of time/effort/cost.
    In my mind, there are 2 obvious comparisons for this car...
    Previously I had a stock NB Miata. I'm a big guy, at 6'2" the Miata was a tight fit, the Spyder is cavernous in comparison. My head would hit the top support bar in the Miata, I can drive the MR2 with a helmet on and the top up. The lack of a transmission tunnel in the MR2 means my knee isn't jammed up against the steering wheel and there's more than enough seat travel.
    On the downside, the lack of a trunk is a bummer. I think the Miata is a better-looking, but not nearly as interesting or rare. Something about a mid-engined car just makes the MR2 more unique and special but if I'm honest, it's not a manly-looking car by any means. The real Achilles heal of the Spyder is the suspension, it's way out-classed by the Miata. Most of the inadequacies can be mitigated but doing so requires a lot of attention and expertise.
    The other obvious comparison is the Elise. Clearly the Spyder is strongly influenced by it. The shape of the rear air intakes, raised headlights, interior design and of course the drivetrain all scream Lotus Elise. Toyota has always had a strong relationship with Lotus (my Esprit has AE86 taillights and Celica front brakes) and I've always thought there must have been some agreement between the two companies regarding the Spyder. I suspect this may be why Toyota never offered the 2zz. The inferior suspension and less rigid chassis combined with the lack of a rollbar (or targa configuration) meant meant that the MR2 wouldn't be competing on track with it's Lotus cousin, at least not without significant modifications.

    I bought a tuned ECU from @R9K for a little over $300, one advantage being entering high lift MUCH earlier - I think around 5800 RPM. That makes a huge difference that eliminates the gap in lift between 64 MPH and 74 MPH. I can get into lift in 1st gear and stay there all the way up.

    the reason most people do the 6 speed as well is because the gears are closer, meaning you can stay on the hot cam through every shift. Torsen LSD is pretty mandatory for this too, and it's also a toyota OEM part.

      The gears are not closer, the six speed literally just adds another gear on top of the 5th. The final drive ratio is what can make the gears closer together. It depends on what ratio your stock 5-speed came with in comparison with what ratio the 6-speed comes with.

    *The 2ZZ engine was going to be the next engine Toyota put in the MR2 Spyder* . It's no accident that it fits in the MR2 Spyder without modification. However, sales of the MR2 tapered off drastically in the US and Mazda never boosted the HP of the Miata (so no HP war was ever triggered between the two). Toyota said forget it and decided to stick with the 1ZZ engine until the car was retired in 2005.

    • @mk2mister2

      I think it was more than that and there was an agreement with Lotus not to put the 2ZZ in the Spyder because it would have taken sales away from the Elise. The ZZ30 was not much heavier than the Elise and it certainly would have undercut the Elise sales. Maybe not the Miata but Toyota could have also gone after the S2000 with a 2ZZ Spyder.

      Toyota4Life I have owned both and I said the MR.2 was faster, and much better in the snow thanks to all that extra grip. But if you are at full tilt the MR2 is way less forgiving. I actually preferred my MX-5 to my S13 200SX too. All of them were slightly modified and I live in the UK. Maybe that's why I like the one which is best to fly along damp twisty b-roads, man top down, great suspension and tyres under you and just keeping that speed is so rewarding.
      Don't get me wrong having had a little MK1 and a high powered MK2 MR2 turbo they are some of the best cars of their time (I'm 33 now). Personally I preferred the MK1, I guess I just like little momentum cars, the powerful stuff just means you clench your ass more than smile. Especially here in England where the good roads can be narrow and the weather miserable 🌦️🔰🇯🇵🇬🇧🏁
