  • Southern Park Mall is one of my local malls that I grew up with as a kid. Lots has changed, and not for the better. Take an in-depth tour with me and learn the history, and the new addition coming called "Debartlo Commons".

    Dead as a door nail. Back on the 90s it was the absolute best!!!

    Yeah, I never heard of this mall but I *just* came out of it and there were only 2 or 3 vacancies. It was pretty busy and looked really nice. I was impressed!

      Wow! Eastwood is going down?? I would've thought it would be Southern Park first. That explains why they added Boscovs recently, trying to drum up attendance. Sheesh.

    That's just a slow day, definitely not dead

    I moved out of Youngstown around 12 years ago, went back recently and I wouldn't say it is "dead" but the clientele is definitely different and there are a lot more empty stores. Even when I finished high school 20 years ago, it was still a happening and diverse place with a lot of shops and events still. A lot has changed in the working class suburban market in those past 20 years however.

    Not necessarily a dead mall but Eastwood has always been better 💯 damn I sure do miss Jillian's tho... Sooo many good memories in that place

    I’m not sure you can call a mall the owner (WPG) is investing $30 million to redevelop a “dead mall.”

    • @JohnCassity
      @JohnCassity  4 роки тому

      ytown well it could either revive it or finish the mall off all together. If you are from the area then you know our weather does not do well with outdoor places and venues

    • @ytown
      @ytown 4 роки тому +2

      @@JohnCassity just saying i believe it is premature to say the mall is dead. Also just a portion of this will be outside with new retail being built along the west and south portions of the mall. Would argue Grove City Outlets do just fine as an outdoor venue in this climate.

      @ytown I agree with you, this mall is nowhere near dead.

    Looks like it's suffering but not quite yet expired.

      The mall is not suffering, nor dead. Just a slow day. And btw; the JCPenny is one of the best performing ones in the region.

    As a European it absolutely baffles me that anyone should have nostalgia for a mall. I get that it's very sad to see the economy decline though.

    I blame cellphones/internet for having dead malls today. With technology, why go to mall to shop, when you can find/shop online for anything possible! There’s a documentary movie called “Jasper Mall”(2020) , that you should check it out, it’s so sad to watch it with less n less peoples in it.

    I worked at the JCPenny in this mall during the holiday season of 2018 and if you go in the back where they stored all the merchandise, there were carts from Kaufmann's and sears! You should try to look into Pittsburgh Mills its still open but its extremely dead yet beautiful

    I certainly would not call Southern Park a dead mall, at least not at this point. There are many malls out there that would more closely qualify. Did you happen to stop at the Shenango Valley Mall across the state line in Hermitage, PA? Or the Richmond Town Square Mall in Richmond Heights, OH (a little over one hour away)? Those two are much better examples of a dead mall.

      I agree. The two malls in Youngstown/Warren metro and Millcreek Mall in Erie are largely successful, while the larger malls in Cleveland and Pittsburgh are for the most part struggling.

    Southern Park Mall is "dead"? That's news to me. It was packed the last time I was there about six months ago. I'm going back today so maybe I'll edit this comment based on what I see. Lol.

      At the time of this video 2 years ago debartlo commons was still in the development phase and the mall was struggling, recently I’ve noticed it has been a little busier, so it may be taking a turn, but crime rate is increasing around the mall which could potentially harm business.

    The Horne/Dillards space was added later. Pretty sure the original anchors were Sears, Penny's, Strouss, and Woolworth's. Also I'm pretty sure the Horne/Dillard's space opened as a Higbee's, which was purchased by Horne's

    Me and my dad came here one time and it was not that good. To be honest the only fun nothing about it was playing the oculus quest 2 at the gamer lounge. This mall has nothing good.
