Wow an entire skylight roof. That really is something spectacular.
You don't really see that anymore that much in new malls built today. Most of them nowadays are usually an outdoor kinda deal.
I have a lot of great memories going there as a kid. This mall will be missed.
I’m blown away at just how beautiful and pristine this place is, omg! I’ve seen operating malls nowhere even close to looking like this one, much-less sitting abandoned 11 years. What an absolute travesty for such a newer mall to fail so fast and so miserably. RIP 😔
Once the roof starts leaking that hastens the decay.
It was pretty much dead about 5 years after it opened. I remember coming here around 98-99 and most of the mall was shut down. The area around it was never the best and that scared people off
Rumors of it being unsafe due to some skirmishes never helped this beautiful mall survive. Sad.
I managed that Ritz Camera back in 2001-02. I actually recognize some of the photos still hanging up in there. Thanks for the memories.
Wow that’s cool
that's so cool I remember going to the mall a couple times when I was younger
And there she goes, my friend. In all of her royal blue, mauve and teal splendor. Another one bites the dust. RIP Irondequoit, you never let us down geometrically. We pray you are not replaced by a mere square of a structure with decor featuring various shades of beige.
I remember visiting Rochester a couple years ago. I was driving down the highway and off to the side is this huge mall, and in the window is this carousel, sitting there forbodingly. The parking lot was empty and I could tell the place was abandoned, but the fact that that carousel was still there for all to see was absolutely fascinating. The building also looked to be in surprisingly good shape.
This is that mall
I'm so glad you got to see the Irondequoit mall before they do what they're going to do. I love this Mall because it brings me back to the 90's when I was a kid. Thanks Anthony!
P.s. I'm glad the Irondequoit Mall/Medley Center is getting new life and not sitting and rotting out.
I can remember in the 1950’s when malls were first being built, people saying, they hated to see them built because they felt it would lead to store closings downtown. And they were right, main streets across the country began to die in the 60’s. Then when Walmart came on scene, people started worrying about the malls dying, but it wasn’t so much Walmart, it was the over population of retail shopping, or retail greed.
Thomas Allen now everything is going back to downtown. Local is on the rise, only boomers like corporate brands haha funny how things shift.
@Kelpie Birds Yeah I noticed that. I began seeing some more name brand stores opening-up in my local downtown district. I wonder if it's because they want an old-school small town Americana feel these days. No wonder why they're developing these open-air lifestyle/town centers these days. Because more Americans want to go back in time to the golden days.
More to add... I mean if look at these new houses they're building today, they are either Victorian or (more so) Arts & Crafts style houses instead of the more modern (I guess "then"-futuristic) minimalistic style homes of the mid-1900's (meaning like mid-20th century like 1940s, '50s, '60s and well up until the mid '70s -- maybe even early '80s the latest). I wonder how long is it until we start seeing people dressing up in suits and ties and ornate dresses again?
And "apparently" they claim gas lamps are futuristic these days (along with EVERYBODY'S FAVORITE subway tile). Like REALLY?!?! I thought that shit went out over 100-years-ago! I thought this was the 21st century, not the 19th or early 20th. Weren't we supposed to have flying cars and MASSIVE spaceships like the Starship Enterprise by now?!
@@areyoujelton ... "only boomers like corporate brands". You're wrong. Many boomers want local. Corporate brands were all that were available when we were coming of age. Besides, I see a lot of Gen Xers and Gen Zers with that corporate Apple brand in their hands.
@@werksdesign What about US millennials as well? (Meaning the people born in the 1980s well-up until at least the late '90s.)
I like your point as to why these malls trigger emotions from our youth. Keep up the great work and stay safe.
I was 9 when it opened. I can still remember the sights, sounds and smells! This video is bringing back a lot of memories. I grew up in this mall. Amazing video!
What would really top it off are the smells from the cookie and cinnamon bun places.
That mall opened the same year I was born, that's cool, just too bad it's now gone, another great video!
P.S. The "Ride my Bike" song is now stuck in my head, love the '80s sound
It's amazing how good of shape this place is, and it's also sad that a lot of these store we'll never see again. At least they are starting to work on this place and use the property for something. Just think if moonbeam got their slimy hands on it, it would be another rolling acres.
Or Kohan! (Boo! Hiss!)
Wow! This place must have been gorgeous in its heyday-such a beautiful fountain and layout.
Malls definitely bring back all my childhood memories, and man did I have a lot of "firsts" there too. Your videos and music bring back that 80's vibe. Love it man. I am glad I grew up in the 80' and 90's when malls were still in their heyday! Thanks for putting out this content man.
God the Grand opening of the mall looked SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!! When grand openings were actually fun and there were happy people all over the place and lots of balloons. I was 9 months old the day it opened and my mom took me but I obviously don't remember, ugh why couldn't I be born 20-25 years earlier, then I would've gotten to enjoy it as an adult, but noooooooooo.
This was the first mall I went "dead malling" at. I arrived in Rochester in 1998 it was fairly full. It is amazing how fast this one emptied out. In 1999-2000 you started noticing a bit too many empty stores. About 2004 I stopped in to see what was left. About 75% empty and that spooky feeling.
Irondequoit Mall has a similar design to Walden Galleria before it was expanded and remodeled.
I grew up going to this mall every weekend to race slot cars with my father, I was only around 8 or 9 years old at the time but I remember walking through as it was emptying out. I wish I could've had a chance to walk through one more time. A lot of great memories were had there none the less. Thanks for the great video and digging up some old memories I had stored away!
15:45 - all together now...
"GOOOOOODBYE RUBY TUESDAY'S, WHO COULD HANG A NAME ON YOOUUU-UUUU"
Wow this a beautiful mall. I hope some of it is still around after the renovation/ project.
12:30 Okay we all know K.B. Toys is long gone but i hope to god those workers to tear down that logo. it's too perfect and iconic, as if to say yes this was a mall and this was one of it's tenants.
Wow i am a fan of your Dead Mall Haunting videos. I want to thank you for the dedication you put on this videos and specially the soundtrack you use for them. Those are tracks used on the malls during the 80s and 90s era. I am a 1982 baby and 90s teen. This clips are as nostalgic as they're sad to see this malls go.
The real death of malls is cause by the rise of social media. Malls were built not just for shopping, but where the local community can gather. Strip malls are made for just shopping. Now that a lot of people are substituting the internet for a good portion of their social life in that sense the idea of a mall can be viewed as a dated concept.
@@hunterjayfilm -- I agree that the rise of technology and convenience have change society and behaviors. I remember when I used to hit the mall in middle and high school to meet up with friends in the early 2000s pre-social media. Now people can just Facetime or use IG to connect, despite that human element missing.
My thing with shopping in malls though, def is the experience. You can't physically try on clothes in person or see certain items in the flesh. You can't experience the joy and chatter in the air or just people watching. Mall spaces have to be inviting, and the few malls that have been successful throughout time do a good job of providing an experience, on top of good mall management overall.
@Tom Smith Dixie Square Mall was the first mall to close due to how violent the surrounding area got over there. Malls were still doing great, and also causing widespread abandonment in downtowns untill the 2000's lol.
@Tom Smith Exactly Tom could not agree more.
Not really. Malls started declining when youth weren’t allowed to simply exist in them anymore. So we stopped going.
I worked at that subway. I loved it there, that mall was beautiful.
I am so sad this mall is being torn down!!!! It is 90’s beautiful!!! The aesthetics are overload!!!!! It has wonderful aesthetics!!!!
Thank you so much Anthony for documenting it!!!!
It really takes me back to growing up!!!!
Thanks again so very much!!!! Thanks for the awesome music in your videos too!!!! I love your music and song selections!!!!
Take care, stay safe and stay awesome!!! 👍🏻😬🙏🏻
Michelle it’s not being torn down! they are turning the old Macy’s, the old sears, and a part of the inside of the mall into a community center and a senior center! there is also a call center there
Sorry about that molly. I am still sad the 90’s aesthetics won’t be there. I really loved the 90’s aesthetics!!!! I shouldn’t have said torn down. I meant it was being remolded. I am glad they are using the building.
I am glad it will be a community center and call center.
This is so close to my sisters house in Webster NY near off Bay Road. I have fond memories taking trips with her to this mall when I was younger. So sad to see this mall in disarray, but glad it's being repurposed. Thank you Anthony for getting these in vivid detail videos to help us reminisce.
I used to work in front of the mall at TJs Big Boy on East Ridge Rd. At the time there used to be an old Concrete Company at the mall site back in the day. When I left there, they were just breaking ground for the Mall. Never been in it but I guess this is as close as I’ll ever get. Nice job Ace! Another good one.
Love those fancy columns
I've never even to this mall but its stuck with me since the first video I saw of it. The skylight, the carousel, the salmon and turquoise color scheme, it feels so familiar. I'm glad its remained unvandalized despite being vacant for so long.
(Vaporwave fans shed a single tear like Iron Eyes Cody)
Awwww, remember all these commercials for these malls in Rochester playing North of the border in Ottawa Ontario😢. Amazing work Ace!👏👏👏
So many memories in that mall. I worked in the food court in the early 90’s and I loved it. I was always there even when I was off. It was a young person’s hangout. I’m so glad I grew up in that time.
I used to work for the Maintenance and housekeeping crew in that mall, when it was Wilmorite. 20 years ago or more.
It's like Sears it's history you'll never see again
Hopefully this will have a better future when repurposed
I get that going back in time feeling with the old footage of Midtown Mall in Rocheester which is gone since 2007 as you now ,
I see this mall everyday and have never been inside, and I'm sad to see this place the way it is
I love your videos. Your are an excellent documentarian, Ace. Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Virginia was my hometown mall where I frequently shopped and I was devastated when it failed and ultimately demolished. Not only did I shop there, I was a local commercial producer and I produced many commercials in Landmark Mall. Your documentary on Landmark Mall was superb. Thank you for all you do in preserving our history. ❤️
Great video. That mall is huge!
If you do your trip across the states you should check out Eastland Mall in Bloomington IL. It’s right next to part of historic Route 66. It has sadly been declining the last 10 years or so but really has gone downhill the last 4 or 5 years and probably has less than 50% of its stores left. There used to be 5 anchor stores and sadly there’s only one left, with another one being turned into a couple different stores. It has a pretty cool history and it’s the mall I grew up going to my entire life.
When Irondequoit Mall opened there was also still Midtown Mall in downtown Rochester
Yea, and when it shuttered all those people went to the Irondequoit mall...which made a lot of people nervous (or so I've heard)
this WAS the very first place I recall hearing Spanish for the first time though lol
That was my childhood mall and every time I drive past it I tear up a bit and now it’s all torn down
You mentioned Greece Town Mall, I remember as a kid in the 70's when they had the oil string display there. Very unique and I was always intrigued as a kid by the oil running down the strings! I always went to Long Ridge Mall too. I have a picture of me and my sister sitting on the big wooden horse with the steps going up it, and the touch board that made sounds when touched! I love reminiscing about that stuff and glad to hear someone else talk about it! :)
My favorite mall you’ve captured besides Finger Lakes! I left you a comment over their too.
Hey Ace…thank you so much for taking one last walk around this mall.
Of the four malls in that area, this one was actually my favorite. Every time we went there in the early to late 90’s, was always a real treat. I remember being…kind of baffled that stores started rapidly disappearing, and I noticed this even somewhat before Eastview And Greece Ridges renovations. I remember I made it a point to visit this mall before school would start, kind of a last ‘hurrah’ before I had to go back to the less than appealing school days at the time. I loved it here so much though, and, when I stumbled on this and see that they’re tearing it down…it really breaks my heart. But as one lady said, they never should have built it in the first place. But regardless, I’m glad they did, all the memories that place gave me are worth the short time it was a part of my life, and always will be.
I am glad as well it evaded vandalism…when I see most abandoned malls, just the destruction to the properties is absolutely terrible. Considering all the ‘crime’ that area supposedly had, there was never any problem with vandalizing there (honestly I think those were just nasty rumors, I never had any trouble when we went there right up until the end)
My childhood mall
I grew up with a mall a short distance from my home and rode my bike there then drove there thru school. Lot of memories made there .
By far this is now my favorite video because everything reminds me of what the mall looks like in my country. Same interiors especially the skylights [though with the pandemic, the last time I was at that mall [March 16], I saw the entire 3rd floor being closed up including the skylights]. Stay safe everyone
This mall is literally up the street from my house! I drive pass it almost every day. Truly miss this mall! 💗💗💗
Reminds me of the Steamtown Mall in Scranton
The First Video you did of this place is MY FAVORITE on your channel!!
Fantastic as always!
What a gorgeous Mall! What a crying Shame. ugh so painful to see it all went to waste.
I was helping do some demo on this place a few months ago. It was my first time inside an abandoned Mall it's so odd seeing places like this without any people or anything in it almost seems apocalyptic in a way.
great video! RIP Irondequoit Mall :(
If you find yourself on Long Island, you should come to the Sun Vet Mall. It’s not quite dead, but it is a shell of its former self, and it would be really interesting to see some content on it.
It’s a shame, that was a nice looking mall that had no chance. Remember going there a few times in the teen years. So many malls in the area though.
What a nice mall. Wish that mall had the chance to succeed. Unfortunately like most malls it didn't make it.
Great video! Thanks.
WNY represent! 🤚👍
These mall series that I'm seeing all over youtube are fitting given the 2020 pandemic. Sad to see these malls close.
I used to go here years ago when I was younger with my mom rip mom miss you I will see you again when it's my time
18:25 Spent the entrire summer of 1996 in this arcade playing Mortal Kombat 3. The clouds restaurant was Arbys, where we would get jamocha milkshakes (the only thing we spent money on besides MK3). The restaurant to the right was an asian food place that had free samples that we would try to hit as many times as possible, I don't think anyone ever actually bought a full meal from there
Anthony! Please come out to Portland OR & document the Lloyd Center dead mall ❤️
Looks just like the Danbury Fair mall did when it opened.....amazing.
Great video Ace, good example of a late 80’s/early 90’s Mall
Rochester is a city thicc in mall history. From the historic midtown designed by Victor gruen, to the amalgamation of longridge and Greece towne and then to this disaster
gravijiga yep
Vallco shopping mall In Cupertino, Ca is said to be a haunted dead mall now.
thank you enjoyed this but made me sad.
I went to the IM in 1992 (sis lived in ROC) and it was stunning. Came back to go to college in 1997 & by then you knew it was going down
Eastview got majorly renovated & became even nicer than the Walden Galleria & almost as nice as Carousel Mall (now Destiny USA)
But the bigger issue with IM/Medley Center was it got a BAD rep for crime
It seems like so many malls are shutting down....its sad. I have a lot of cherished memories from my teenage years at the mall...it seems like all malls are slowly dying out..I'm in Alabama and the mall from the city I grew up in is still open..a lady I know bought the space where Sears used to be and she is opening up a family entertainment and bowling place...I wish her lots of luck.
Thank you for sharing your awsome video contents Anthony I am very much enjoying your video's. So very sad to see the Mall's close due to unforeseen circumstances but however we are so very fortunate enough here in Australia our Mall's (shopping centres as we know them as) are doing alright but some shops have closed due to the Pandemic.
I grew up in Rochester but have not been back for 40 YEARS. Where is the lrondequoit mall located; I remember the Irondequoit shopping plaza . Is it in that space. Sibleys used to be there.
Refreshing they will actually adaptively reuse the structure and additionally for a public use and benefit. It might have been much cheaper to demolish the whole thing and reclaim 'green space' or to build anew, bravo to this local community for being innovative. If it were not in such pristine condition, this likely could have never been done.
Medley centre mall is a beautiful mall I never been to I wish I went there before but don't worry sometimes good things has to go
Medley centre mall just faded away in 2009, sad to see the structure go
Did you say the new owner bought it for 100k? Holy crap I would have bought it in a minute for that.
I think he also had to pay back taxes which was a couple million
That’s good
its sad, ive been there quite a few times , i never even knew they closed or its been demolished. was a really nice mall in its day.....
kb toy store love that store
Very similar in styling to the Galleria mall
Was this a Simon Mall? Looks exactly like the Burlington (MA) Mall-also Simon. I can even see the Burlington Mall dying..slowly.
Pentagon City in Arlington, VA has a similar esthetic
No, built by Wilmorite.
18:39 That soda machine looks new to me!
How did everything so good go so wrong? Is it just us missing our younger selves or what else is it? I get so incredibly overwhelmed thinking about how things used to be that is makes me so depressed about the present and future. I don’t even know what to think anymore. I loved the internet when it first became popular, but the internet and social media/phones have completely changed society and I hate it. I want to go back. I want to feel the same hope and excitement about things as I did back then. Is this what being an adult feels like? Because I don’t like it
Is this the same architect as the Shoppingtown mall in Dewitt? The skylights look similar.
yes, wilmorite
wow this looks almost the same to Peacocks Woking surrey England
Damn that is exactly where i was thinking of! The way the stairs go round like that is exact. I'm near the Woking area and have worked for a couple of firms there. That whole town is undergoing a massive change now too. Always went round the spiral to the red car park
Great video on the mall. Phoenix has a mall that is closing down. I need to get over there and do a blog on it.
Amazing job as always Ace. I'm a big fan of malls being reused but I was under the impression that the place wouldn't be changed all that much. Gotta remind myself that any retail facility older than 20 years is subject to being bleached. Really a shame, I love Wilmorite malls. At least Greece Ridge is still doing ok...
I have seen bad concept art for malls but that last photo is something else. Big yikes
Much like Las Vegas, a 20 year old casino is ready for the demolition. Rumor that the Excalibur might be gone before long along with some of the other 'old' casinos. The Rivera,
and places like that are now just empty lots, waiting for the next great building.
Greece Ridge and Eastview (which is the upscale mall in the Rochester, NY area) will probably be OK for at least the near future. Marketplace's future is dicier; it might depend on whether it's JCPenney gets shut down as a result of the bankruptcy or not.
Well at least it's not being tore down but being rebuilt into something else
I need to know where the grand opening footage came from!
Don’t demolish it!
Thanks
Promises made, promises broken.
I’ll miss seeing videos of this place.
You know, I busted your chops a lot when you started out for copying Dan Bell, but honestly your channel has grown to be really respectable and I love your content! Sorry for being a dick before!
Jelton Inc. it’s ok! I think at first I was doing alot of the same things but think i have changed alot :)
Great video as always . What are they going to do with the property after the renovations are done?
I love the 90's retro look brings back memories of my hometown malls. ☺
It is going to be a community center, and some mixed use space
@@makeshiftlake3519 ahh ok thanks for letting me know
Glad to see its gonna be used for something and not totally destroyed.
I went only a few times. Too big, too airy, the floor plans were confusing, you could barely hear yourself think. The biggest draw was the carousel.
so sad it getting torn down
It's basically being gutted not torn down
Hold on, the boarded-up mall that had been bought by the Chinese but never reopened? Sign me up!
Maybe they turn some old store in to some Apts
