god, it's so refreshing to see someone smart play this game. Most let's players would just repeatedly try their first idea over and over and blame the game for it but you actually adapt and think about what you're doing
1:25:41 - if you managed to keep this guy alive, you'd eventually open multiple supply caches. i believe there were 2 rooms full of supplies one room for this one 1:28:03 another room for this one 1:31:52
Surface Tension is one of the most memorable levels of Halflife. You feel you are no longer an almighty protagonist, but just a pawn caught in a fight between two more powerful sides. Bright daylight, lots of unique triggered scenes, tanks and helicopters, two enemy factions in one map - all that was novelty and very lifelike in 1998.
1:18:37 My theory has always been, the two security guards in there threw themselves on grenades to prevent the explosions setting off the big missile, the way it does when you cause any explosions.
Friendly tip :) Use that alien arm gun for the head crabs, especially in the vents. You can sometimes shoot around corners as they automatically locate targets with mouse button 1, and you can dumb-fire all rounds super fast for quicker damage with MB2. It’s great for conserving ammo and I always have it set to hot-swap with Q. Excellent progress. Good luck on the next.
You are experiencing a lot of glitches and some unfortunate Ai behavior. For example, the helicopter at the cliff bugged into the wall and died. And then there is the guard at 1:28:00, who would let you into a supply room, but the military got him first. The exploding crates at 34:40 are part of the scripted scene that introduces the Tau-canon. - Primary fire bounces off of walls, allowing you to shoot around corners. - Secondary can shoot trough walls. In both cases, i haven't found many situations where this is useful. It just takes too long, to set up a good shot. The tau can take out tanks and helicopters btw, which would have made the dam area much easier.
Also, the Tau's charged shots are so powerful, the recoil can launch you high into the air, which is used both by speedrunners and by experienced players in multiplayer.
The tau cannon becomes a lot more useful when you realize how many hidden mechanics it has. It actually creates explosions whenever the beam reflects off a surface or exits a wall after penetrating it. In the latter case, the explosion it creates can actually be quite massive depending on the charge level of the beam penetrating the wall. The visual effects for the weapon don't really make it clear just how much is going on with the beams whenever you're firing.
The variety and cleverness of HL1 level design is still some of the best to this day. The change in circumstances is also great as things go from lab accident to government coverup to full on mechanized war and alien threat escalates from wild animals running amok to small incursions to air dropped alien shock troops. A real FAFO event for humanity. Missile Launcher "secondary fire" lets you use the laser the guide the missile.
Questionable Ethics features: -The dogs -The bees -The -dogs- cyborg warmachines with the bees in their -mouths- arms, and then they bark, they shoot bees at you.
17:30 Crouch before dropping down. I'm not sure how that works exactly, but it reduces fall damage. Edit: The right-click zoom is only in Black Mesa. Always forgot about it...
Probably because it's based on your height, and your height is considered to be where the camera is. When you crouch, you lower yourself a little. Also, the revolver _does_ have a zoom, but _only in multiplayer!_ Another dramatic difference in multiplayer is the crossbow fires explosive bolts when you don't use the scope.
What this dude said, except it's important to know they only really target humans, so if there are only aliens around...well we all know how that goes lol
sometimes it seems like you don't hurt them and that's because some enemies have armored parts, the soldiers have helmets, if you hit them with a not so powerful weapon you will see that sparks come out, hence the big bugs that shoot bees have armor in some parts from his body, from there you see how you hit him in the head 3 times with a shotgun and he doesn't die
Graphics glitches. Try going into your video settings in the game and see if it will let you use the openGL pathway. The D3D pathway was always buggy going way back. If you can use the OpenGl api instead it's generally much better. If it's already on OpenGL you can try changing it to D3D even. My experience is that the D3D version is buggier though. As for the right click on the 357 Magnum revolver. In the vanilla game that only works in Multiplayer as I recall.
fun fact: the hornet gun distracts any type of sentry gun (the only kind of enemy in fact) fun fact 2: you can get INSANE amounts of speed by using the tau cannon / gauss gun by charging it up and firing it in the air fun fact 3: vortigaunts (the guys that zap you) run away when having low amounts of health, trying to hide from you. if cornered, they will only claw at you
It's so funny how you immediately found the correct path through the conveyor belt part but then got sidetracked. Kinda sucks how that area punishes you for exploring, giving you nothing and wasting your very limited ammo, when the rest of the game encourages you to explore.
01:40:00 I felt like Hard was pretty well balanced, but that wasn't on the first playthrough and I did just reload when I felt like I had taken too much damage. You are speeding along a lot of the time, so that's probably part of the problem. Try to use indirect fire when possible. The Hivehand is more valuable on Hard because of that. Grenades and such as well.

Yeah, if it's one thing I hate about the game, it's how the tracks just play regardless if you die or not. Kinda ruins some really cool moments. Like the cliffside bit, and the tunnel right after.
Originally, the tracks were played straight from the CD alongside the game. If the game was designed back then with our more modern means of playing back tracks in mind, it probably would have better implementation.
@@DorukPlaysGames FWIW, _OpFor_ came first, a year after _HL._ _Blue Shift_ was released a couple of years after that. In case you care about release order.

The intended way to get rid of the helicopter at the storm-drain part, is the charged gauss-canon, but the glitch did a good job too. Since the last thing seen of the helicopter was it clipping through the Skybox, I assume it was wandering off out of the level bounds.
2:39 as far as I know, that is pretty much the way to do it. As far as taking damage goes, the developers didn’t really think through damage softlocking back in 98.
No, there is indeed a way to do it properly. You don't need to hold E to turn the valve, you can just press it once and the valve will turn itself the rest of the way. So the time wasted holding E on the valve is actually time you could be using to climb the ladder. And if that fails, you could always land on the lights that are sticking out along the inside of the tube.
Half-Life is somewhat buggy and janky. Valve ran out of money developing it. There's probably some technical reason for the black barrier in the dam. Something to do with rendering visibility and multiple water levels.
I assume this is a filler texture for places you are not supposed to explore. In Blast Pit there is also a Black barrier in the Tentacles's pit so you don't jump in, while it is still alive.

Quite the opposite of what it’s supposed to do, even.
