I never went to church much, with little music. I heard all this music in rock and roll bars throughout the south. The smell of beer, cigarettes, sawdust and peanuts. Great times in the 70s.
I had never really listened to the Allman Brothers until I went to visit my sister and her boyfriend told me we were going to see them that night; he had tickets. What a revelation! I was stunned by the musicianship. Amazed. They never knew where they were going, but never got lost. Suddenly I understood what all the Southern Rock bands were trying to do.
When I was a kid I lived down the road from them. I washed Greg's Lincoln. He wanted to pay me but I ask if he would teach me Melissa. I have never had anything but a 12 string since.
Interesting that you mentioned the church feeling. On one of the last nights the Fillmore East was open, the Allman Brothers played ALL NIGHT. When they left the building, the sun was coming up and it was Sunday morning. One of them remarked that he felt as if he were leaving church. As for the naked photos, they were taken at Otis Redding's farm and, needless to say, they were stoned off their asses. There are more graphic shots from the same photo session out there if anyone is interested. (I was interested...that's how I know. :) ) I was fortunate enough to be around before they were well-known even around the Southeast.
Mrs. Ward here. These guys rocked my world as a young girl. There's so much to feel in their music. Missing the founding member s always. Such loss, but what legendary music they left us with.
Hey Dramasyde loved your reaction to Cross to bear. I thought your comment about the naked PR picture was funny. I don’t know if anyone committed on this but that was taken at Ottis Redding’s ranch. They were good friends. Love those stories. Great job dude ✌🏻💜👍
My daughter took me to see Allman Brothers live for my 60 birthday...Needles to say they killed it! Greg showcased each member of his band ..Amazing talents..Gone too soon..Thank God for the music living on..voice like raw honey..
My favorite band ever. Welcome to The Brotherhood. As far as the pic is concerned, keep in mind that this was during the height of the hippie counterculture movement, and "natural" was a really big deal. They wanted to be free in all the ways their parents wanted them to be restricted. ☺️⚜️✌️
Marie Laveau I may be wrong but I was thinking that but also could it be a symbol of being baptized? I mean they were strongly influenced by not just jazz blue soul but gospel music and Gregg does play the Hammond like he’s in Church. Just a thought.
@@humpy936 Absolutely. Your acknowledging Berry made me smile! Died a year later than Duane in the same way, maybe 3 minutes from where Duane had crashed. But I guess you probably already knew that, since you showed him respect along with Duane and Gregg here.
That hook got ya my brother like it does all of us. Every time I listen to this song I make the same exact facial expressions your making. Music is magic! It connects us all. And yes I grew up in a southern Pentecostal church and that’s the first thing I thought of too. That bass line is so churchy.
Doesn't that guitar just cry! And who ever said a white man can't sing the blues! The naked in the creek pic was the inside liner of the album cover....can't remember if it was from their first or second album. Amazing also to think Duane Allman was only 24 when he died......Lord, what we missed when he passed so early!
Some things about southern boys are unexplainable, so don’t feel like you have to understand the creek scene. It basically shows southern boys don’t care what others think as long as it’s not hurting anyone.
BRO, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS HAD IT ALL, BLUES, JAZZ, GOSPEL, COUNTRY, ROCK, AND THEN SOME, GREGG ALLMAN HAD THE GREATEST VOICE, BEFORE THE ALLMAN BROS. WERE FORMED, DUANE ALLMAN PLAYED GUITAR ON,,ARETHA FRANKLIN'S ALBUM, HE TALKED WILSON PICKETT INTO DOING A COVER OF THE BEATLES SONG, HEY JUDE, THAT WAS JUST RELEASED, AND THEY THOUGHT THAT DUANE WAS NUTS, DUANE TOLD WILSON, WE CAN DO IT BETTER, WILSONS VERSION IS BETTER THAN THE BEATLES, DUANE ACCOMPLISHED ALL OF THIS BEFORE ALLMAN'S WERE FORMED, THIS MAN DID ALL OF THIS , HE WAS ONLY 24 YEARS OLD WHEN HE DIED, THAT IS A LOT OF MUSIC,TO DO BY AN EARLY AGE, ,.THE GUY JUST HAD A GIFT FOR MUSIC, MY MR. MUSIC R.I.P., COUSIN FIGEL
Here's a MUCH cleaner stereo mix in which you can hear their distinctive dual drummers in each ear with your handy dandy headphones. The photo you asked about was on the inside liner of that debut (1969) album: ua-cam.com/video/8SZlz9WKccE/v-deo.html
Greg and Duane Allman just have so much soul for white southern boys. I think they call it "Blue Eyed Soul." Duane is recognized as one of the great slide Blues guitarists ever, and Duane, he just got a voice and Heart for the Blues. Duane died way to young, and we lost Greg about 2 years ago I think. No one like the Allman Bros. Band.
You let the genie out of the bottle... do yourself a favor listen to the whole album at the Fillmore East but get the deluxe edition which will have at the Fillmore + 3/4 of Eat a peach their fourth album... and be prepared to be blown away got turned on to them June 1970 they've been my favorite band ever since seen them over 15 times and the Allman Brothers famous saying ...the road goes on forever ... You my friend have just joined the journey
You like the Brothers, so I'll bet you'll like the Tedeschi Trucks Band too! The lead guitarist is AMAZING! His name is Derek Trucks and he is the nephew of Butch Trucks, one of the drummers for the Brothers. His wife is Susan Tedeschi and she has a fantastic voice full of soul! They also have a great band behind them! Check out the video "Keep on Growing" - Live From The Fox Oakland. You won't regret it!
I was so hoping you'd start with "Dont Want You No More" as they run together as almost one song. Plus, I was hoping to see the jump scare the sudden beginning of the song would cause you like it has me at least 800 times! lolol
Totally right: gospel and soul influences...what an amazing way to start the song! The references to "cross" and "testify" are definitely from the gospel tradition.
Excellent reaction comments. The fusion of Blues, Rock and that tent-style 'church' music / organ reminds of the wonderful, inclusive cross-culture of late 20th century American music.
Man, you got the groove dialed in for sure..make sure you listen to the song before "Don't Want You No More" and let it run into this one. Adds a real kick when it bleeds into Not My Cross ...Thanks for sampling.
I agree it does have a gospel feel to it. In music terms, it's a twelve bar blues song inspired by the great T Bone Walker who many consider to be the King of Electric Blues. Great song from one of America's greatest bands.
6:45 Their then manager’s idea, Phil Walden. He promised they’d never be seen yet.....Bubbles washed away, it was cold and I’m sure they would rather forget about it. Crazy times indeed.
If you love blues there's a blues man that's highly overlooked some people may not know about Roy Buchanan check him out can be first for you and alot your audiance
I love this song and your reaction to it. You are spot on in regard to free Gospel. I would ask you please to react to Sam and Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming" and "I'm a Soul Man". Thank you. Keep it up.
Check out Clarence Gatemouth Brown .. One of the greatest musicians ever in my opinion... He played the Fiddle , Harmonica and a great guitar...Look up I've got my Mojo working ... Definitely a must see
Blues/R&B came out of Gospel. To paraphrase Little Richard: Change the word 'LORD to "LOVE" and you change it from "church" music to "the Devil's" music.
If you want to listen to one that’s got elements of blues, jazz, rock, and a touch of country and an excellent example of them playing so together and tight as a band I recommend you check out the studio version of “Come And Go Blues “, by the way it’s way it’s obvious you genuinely feel the music, you’re the real deal
How tempted were you to roll the opening track into this one for a full review? That's how the band wanted it, that's how all listeners learned about this new band and their first-ever album.
Ehh, think it's more of a hippie/Woodstock/back to nature/nudity is freeing type of deal. I don't think there was a creepy intent to it, not like it would in today's culture.
Yea I hate those old PR pictures and the record companies would put it in on the inside of the cover ,poster or inner album sleeve ..It was the the worst part of the 70s
This is a great song to react to - thank you! - however, it is best listened to as it is on the album: 1) "Don't Want You No More" and then it flows into 2) "Not My Cross to Bear". You might want to give it a listen so that you can get the full effect.
Anything the Allman Bros did was a classic , my opinion of course.. They had love for the Blues .. Check out Must've done somebody wrong ..Another blues classic
Goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME. Didn't see them with Dickey or Duane, but did see them several times with Derek and Warren. Musicianship unsurpassed and this is without a doubt my favorite ABB song. Thanks for checking this out.
ABOUT THE CREEK PIC -- Yes, it's on the inside cover of the first album. Here's the kicker -- when it was released another pic from that 'session' was published in the The Great Speckled Bird -- hip newspaper in Atlanta --of the band STANDING UP in the creek, full monty. What an era.
I never went to church much, with little music. I heard all this music in rock and roll bars throughout the south. The smell of beer, cigarettes, sawdust and peanuts. Great times in the 70s.

This band made me love the BLUES. 50 years later, I still love the blues.
When I was a kid I lived down the road from them. I washed Greg's Lincoln. He wanted to pay me but I ask if he would teach me Melissa. I have never had anything but a 12 string since.
REMEMBER Duane Allman! 49 years ago he was killed in a motorcycle accident. There would be no Allman Brothers without him!
That's what I'm talking about!🎶🎸✌💙
They truly could make the guitar sing
Look at that- HE GOT IT!!!
All of the Allman brothers stuff is amazing....check out all of there music.....Dreams....
You can definitely hear the great BB King coming out in this one .
What carries you back is Gregg Allman's HAMMOND B-3 organ that "some" black churches were very lucky to have "back in the day".
Such a thoughtful and accurate analysis!

Allman Brothers got soul! My goodness
Just amazing that mama Allman gave birth to a great blues voice AND a great blues guitarist.
Check out Greg Allman's "I'm No Angel"..
Mrs. Ward here. These guys rocked my world as a young girl. There's so much to feel in their music. Missing the founding member s always. Such loss, but what legendary music they left us with.

I feel my Allman Brosnan. I got 4 4.5 ft. Speakers jbl n sansui

Marie Laveau So... Marie, you still casting spells ?
‘Skinny dipping’ is what it’s called man. And yes, a southern male right of passage, no sexual overtones! 😂
Unites black and white....
RIP GREGG and DUANNE ALLMAN!!!
Amen
And Berry Oakley!

They were just toooooooooo damn good. Gospel, soul, blues and killer rock rolled into one big burrito.
Doesn't that guitar just cry! And who ever said a white man can't sing the blues! Love your reaction, man. I grew up in the old south. We came together thru music. Rock On, young dude😎
That picture? Those were crazy times indeed. Great reaction.
I love how Greg draws you into the song right at the start with that heart-wrenching cry!
Some things about southern boys are unexplainable, so don’t feel like you have to understand the creek scene. It basically shows southern boys don’t care what others think as long as it’s not hurting anyone.
Thanks so much for reacting to
"Not my cross to bare"! You made my day! I knew you would like that song!
*bear
...although there is that creek photo, so maybe you're right after all...

How do you not love these guys, just fab
My absolute favorite band!!! Gregg was a musical genius. I miss him a lot!!
please react to No Way Out from the allman brothers(its such a cool song--i think you'll like it)

Blue eyed soul refers to the Righteous Brothers

Gotta love the ABB! Long live their music and memories
Regarding the gatefold picture, Butch Trucks was standing because earlier that day he had sliced open his leg and had 13 stitches in it.

This song, Otis Redding and/or Sam Cooke singing "Change gonna come," Janis Joplin "Summertime," bring me to tears every damn time.
The naked picture was on the album packaging...........Bought it back in 1970 and still have it!
Greg wrote this when he was 21 years old, as well as Whipping post and others..sadly gone now
♥️
Thanks!!! Try Whipping Post or Soul Shine next....they are just a joy to listen to!
Blues is a "joy"!?
Dude, that naked picture was taken at Otis Redding’s place.
Lol...it was in album cover!!So glad you liked...Loved them since I was 14
yessssssssssssssssssssssssss
Don't know why Berry Oakley didn't sing more for the band....he does a great job on this song I think.
That's Gregg Allman singing not Berry Oakley. Oak always sang "Hoochie Coochie Man", the old Muddy Waters song.
Huge Allman Brothers fan. This is one of my favs! Great message! Ya can tell hes been in it deep n come back out.
Great song! Thanks for the great music choices. Does remind you of old gospel
sorry-----its called "One Way Out"
The Allman Brothers were the birth mother of Southern Rock It started with Duanes guitar on Otis Redding cover of Hey Jude.
No, hippies used to get naked all the time😅 I never had the inclination to do so!! Came back for another listen🙂 Rock On, young dude😎
Thanks for stopping by

Try a song called SOUTHBOUND 🔥🔥🔥
My absolute favorite band of all time...if you get a chance listen to “statesboro blues” another great one!

What a great reaction to an intense song.
Have you done Whipping Post?
Good reaction, great song. I consider this Blues, with a capital B. I would concede it could be called progressive rock/Blues.
I love this song and your reaction to it. You are spot on in regard to free Gospel. I would ask you please to react to Sam and Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming" and "I'm a Soul Man". Thank you. Keep it up.

All rock n roll goes back, with a few twists and turns, goes back to the black church.
I think you would really like “Good Clean Fun” as well as “Low Down Dirty Mean!”
You ought to give Whipping Post Live at Filmore East a listen... amazing... from what I have heard said the whole concert is legendary :)
That’s the one.
Hell the whole goddamn concert. Drama, do your fellow young friends a favor and introduce them to the Blues, not a great genre of music alive.
Don’t keep me wonderin. ABB
Soulshine and/or Whipping Post next.
I believe those were album pictures.

Great reactions man. My request would be more Beth, like Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa . I’ll take care of you
Please play soul shine
P.S. I am a new subscriber 😎
I'm just waiting for cancel culture to get around to this music, cause a white band playing. LMAO
Yea I hate those old PR pictures and the record companies would put it in on the inside of the cover ,poster or inner album sleeve ..It was the the worst part of the 70s
Check out Nobody Left To Run With. It has a Bo Diddley beat and tremendous guitar, drums and vocals...one of the Allman Bros best tunes
