The guitar solo at the end is done on a lap steel by David Gilmour! Even if you just do it for yourself you need to see the live version from the 1994 Pulse concert to see David play the lap steel solo!!!!! Absolutely a beautiful rendition of this song using a giant gong, the lap steel and other instruments you would not expect!
What really gripped me is the outro he does after the finale of the lapsteel solo on classical guitar since his 2006 solo shows... literally breathtaking, as you hear every pindrop in the smaller audience of e.g. the Albert Hall
The final solo gives me goosebumps every single time. The song is an absolute masterpiece and means more and more to me every year I spend on this planet. You have to listen to the live Pulse version of this, it's incredible. Gilmour has this look on his face as he finishes the final solo that I interpret as him thinking, 'That was perfect, I can't do it better than that.' It's not a look of triumph or glory but one of deep satisfaction.
Listen and see (PF has always been about sound and vision) to the live concert Pulse. A must see epic concert. David Gilmour also did an epic live concert: remember that night.
One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. I really understand the sting in the heart, it's so melancholic.. those memories and experiences from decades ago.
Oh you must watch the live performance of this song by David in Gdansk. He uses the string section of the Polish Orchestra, and his acoustic guitar solo at the end is absolutely sublime, angelic and moving: ua-cam.com/video/rU_k8BNCcOM/v-deo.html ( High Hopes - David Gilmour live @ Gdansk 2006 )
Absolutely! It is rare to hear any band try to cover Pink Floyd. But Nightwish didn’t just cover the song. Theirs was a true homage, with a Nightwish spin that rivals the original. Highly recommended!!
This song hits differently ever since my grandson was born a year ago. Life is bittersweet and as the years go by I appreciate the beautiful message and creativity of this group of musicians. Thanks guys, you made life on this planet more rewarding for so many of us.
I never fault anyone with starting with the studio version. Face it, there were probably weeks put into getting that recording just right. Not saying concert versions can’t be great, but I know how to make that judgement better when I’ve heard the original.
Great reaction and knowledge. I love watching the reactions to this song because there is always a moment in the song that you see something turn and pull you in and I think it was here at 5:55 onwards with the guitar and build up. Not sure if you have already seen the pulse concert live version but that one you get to see him with his guitar and it’s just a beautiful rendition. 👍
Jone, I suggest you do a deep dive into the American prog band "Kansas". They're masterful musicians & they write lyrics that are often profound. I recommend their songs: "Song for America", "Miracles Out of Nowhere", and "The Wall".
A timeless song. Is liked your recent Nightwish reactions. Did you know that they covered this? The live version on UA-cam is especially worth listening to.
Not sure if your familiar with Jeff Beck's stuff but I'll suggest "Where Were You", both the studio recording (Guitar Shop) and Live at Ronnie Scott's. Also, "Brush with the Blues" studio cut from the album Who Else! Many other great JB tunes as well. Keep up the excellent reactions.
IMHO, miamicool666 summed this song up well with a single word. I would go a bit (or a lot) farther and would venture that this song represents a nostalgic and bittersweet longing for a time when the light of youth really was brighter, the grass greener. An unidentified (former?) student has returned to Cambridge (although Ely and its famous cathedral is its stand-in for this video) to reflect on and then release his memories (the white balloons and the sail-kites) back to the schools where he and two other members of PF were also students. (To, perhaps, seed the fertile ground of Cambridge and, thus, to continue the chain of artists?). We also see him rolling, and then dropping, a single bicycle tire. This moving song is, IMHO, another tribute to founding member of Pink Floyd Syd Barrett, whose stone image (memory) is being carried by his friends and his fellow students. I believe that first person we see, leaning on his car, is the living "ghost" of Syd. (Although Syd was still alive at the time PF's album "The Division Bell" was released, he was no longer in contact with the band, was no longer making music, and had retreated to a very reclusive life back in Cambridge.) Near the end of the video, "ghost" Syd releases his memories and his musical relationships back to the countryside of his youth where they began. The bicycle tire he drops is probably a reference to the song "Bike", written by Syd; that bike is now broken and scattered, just as Syd's mind is irretrievably broken and scattered due to his drug use, which included LSD. "High Hopes" is just one of many PF tribute songs to Syd, some others being "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". The character Pink in the PF album "The Wall" is a loose reflection of both Syd and his schoolmate/bandmate Roger Waters.
Pink Floyd invented music induced space travel, inner-self explorarion voyages and here, Time Travel, because this song takes you back, to a better time, if you were lucky enough to have had a happy childhood. Im taking this song with me, when I cross beyond the veil and into the void and oblivion.
There are so so many Pink Floyd songs that I would recommend to you that I don't know where to begin but if you haven't done Shine on you Crazy Diamond that would be a great one to do next.

It is one of my alltime favourite pink floyd songs. it's stunning!
One of the finest, greatest Pink Floyd song. Marvelous!

Redo this song in a while from the pulse 1994 concert High Hopes now you’ll see how they actually perform it live. You will not be disappointed.
You should see the live Pulse performance
Nobody sounds like David Gilmore, greatness 😅 The grass is always greener on the other side, but in reality it's just the same 😊
La versione dal LIVE PULSE è la migliore

Thank you! Im going to check the pulse version. Deep song.
Listen and see (PF has always been about sound and vision) to the live concert Pulse.
A must see epic concert.
David Gilmour also did an epic live concert: remember that night.
Please check out the PULSE LIVE version of High Hopes.
As Classic Guitarist i would say the Meltown Session is much more interesting
@@renekarfinger8341 It's not even close to the Pulse Live version imho.
@@dero2430maybe you’ve to check it out again, Michael Kamen on Piano and Oboe and the chello Wonder, the better version from a classic point of view
Marooned, Poles Apart, And Keep Talking are 3 more great songs from the same album to try. The rest of the album is fantastic as well.
One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. I really understand the sting in the heart, it's so melancholic.. those memories and experiences from decades ago.

My favorite version of this very moving song. Beautiful!

one of the greatest tracks in the history of ever. just mind blowingly good

A honking car alarm went off while I was listening and it kept perfect time to the bell counter melody.

Stevie Ray Vaughn Texas Flood Live at the el Macombo is a must listen and see! Great Reaction!
Should have reacted to the live Pulse version, not only is it better than the studio version you can also see each musician in action.
I never fault anyone with starting with the studio version. Face it, there were probably weeks put into getting that recording just right. Not saying concert versions can’t be great, but I know how to make that judgement better when I’ve heard the original.
Yes , Big Musicians.

The instrumental Signs of Life, is worth a listen on your own time if you want.

Nostalgic.
Completely agree! Bittersweet nostalgia. That lap steel solo at the end is actually me crying.
you really owe it to yourself to do the live Pulse version of this one. Even better.
Wonderful, and very personal, David Gilmour song about looking back on growing up in Cambridge
A timeless song. Is liked your recent Nightwish reactions. Did you know that they covered this? The live version on UA-cam is especially worth listening to.
Nightwish covered this song?
@@JoneRuiz yeah! There is a version with around 10 million views on youtube. I recommend it.
@@Thomas-qy7wm Nice! Im going to check it out!
At 6:18 what is Gilmour doing here? sounds like a series of pulloffs?? Really want to learn these notes
you must do the pulse version its better

A timeless classic and touches you to the core. My understanding is that it's a song about the human condition of looking back on better times.
How about a reaction to guitarist Nita Strauss songs/videos Dead Inside and The Wolf You Feed?
