    Very promising! And I think I speak for many when I say: Don't worry about the 1984 Quest video being "too long" - they're great, and us geeks watch them multiple times!

      I second this!

      I'm getting a lot closer - I finally figured out a couple of things pertaining to the V - it's been a struggle and I've been through every option I could think of - 2 or 3 times! The new video(s) will probably be a different format - so far, every song has different effect settings, etc....so, I'm going to probably need to do something different when I get started.

    Incredible work Jim. Of all of Eddie’s tones, 1984 has to be the most challenging to try and cop and you are killing it. What they did at 5150 is total guesswork compared to what’s out there for the other albums. The V is a must have part of the tones on that album. Looking forward to the completed project! The nerdier and more verbose the better!

    I just found this channel and boy do I feel glad....I'm not of the age that would have experienced this music at the time of release. (I was born in '84) But my parents were. They instilled a wide range of music love and appreciation in me. I play guitar (sporting a Epi Coronet and Gibby Les Paul Custom) ala Humble Pie (Steve Marriot)

    This is my new favorite song to play as of the last 2 months. So much fun. When I see others play it online, each person has their own way of playing it. The tone on 1984 is a super awesome one (one of my favorites besides Van Halen 2) and somewhat difficult to achieve. You did an amazing job getting my close to it (I don’t think anyone will ever 100% get the exact tone Eddie had, not even Eddie replicated his own exact tone when playing live. I can replicate his live tone easily: just plug into a 4 holer Plexi into the High Treble Channel One with any tubes available lol). One thing I can never do though is replicate his finger work. I have got to say wow! You played this amazingly. The solo I can play almost perfectly 1 out of 10 times…the other 9 times I mess up a bit somewhere but it’s only in the one part of the solo where he does the 14h17h20 on the B string then 17 20P17p14 little e then again in B 120P17P14 14H16H18 20P17P14 14H16H18 17^(pinch harm)P14 17P16P14 SO WEIRD! But you nailed it like Eddie. The more I practice it the more often I hit it, go figure. Thank you for making the videos!!!

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks a bunch! You're completely correct about the studio tone and the live tone - for all of the albums, really - but 1984 has been really tough - I'm testing a couple more tweaks, but I'm super close.

    2:05 unless im greatly mistaken those add9 or sus2 chord forms aren’t something he used a lot in his rhythms, i forgot how cool his rhythms are on a lot of stuff from 1984
    0:27 im also curious where ed learned that chord voicing from, i know of another guitarist and contemporary of eds who recorded a song with that, but im not gonna attribute it to him since im sure ed probably stumbled upon that voicing

      @@jegauss I worked on this song for hours today, and made some progress. I have parts for a dedicated EVH pedal board, but haven't got my bench cleared of other projects yet, so I can get it together. I practiced this straight into the amp with a Wolfgang Special, because it does the tapping thing well without FX. I don't have a V, or Explorer type.

    Hey Jim, What do you think of the possibility that Ed used two amps on 1984? First would be his holy grail Marshal on 10, 2nd would be another plexi on 5 or so.

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  Місяць тому

      Well, we do know that used either a pair of Music Man combo amps, or a pair of Roland solid state amps for the Ripley guitar in Top Jimmy. I don't think we know for sure, but I lean towards those Music Man combos...Other than that, I think everything else is the original Marshall.

    Going through your videos I am wondering which of your amps that you have used for DLR era VH tones in general (not album specific per se) which amp do you prefer? Your modded Marshall clone used on VH1 deep dive, the Metro Amp Mk II or? And what voltage do you prefer to run at? Or is totally album specific? Thank you.

    • @JimmyDevere
      @JimmyDevere 5 місяців тому

      In other words, if you were going to build a rig today what would your first two or three choices be for an amp?

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  5 місяців тому

      Well, all of the videos that I've done, other than for George Metropoulos, have been my orange colored, '68 clone, with the simple circuit changes of the "known" Van Halen amp, serial #12301 - so that amp likes to run at 68 volts, 63 volts, 71 volts, and 77 volts. So, I vary it by album and the sound I'm looking for. The changes are subtle, but noticeable.
      As to your question about building a rig today....I really like what I've got. But then again, I don't gig much anymore, and I don't really have to haul it around more than 4-5 per year. But, if that weren't an issue, I'd choose my rig. I think the Metro MKII is fantastic, I just like mine a little more - and then, if I were playing small club dates, I'd either look at one of the Marshall handwired 18 watt combos (and of course run a variac on it), or if I was going for complete simplicity and ease, I'd probably get one of the Boss Katana combos. Best modeler / amp hybrid that I've heard or played.

    • @JimmyDevere
      @JimmyDevere 5 місяців тому

      Thanks Jim. There are a lot of options out there. Sounds like finding a good clone is the way to go. One other thing I'm curious about, is what impedance are you running at on the amp? Was Ed running 4 ohm into a 16 ohm cab? why not two cabs at 8 ohms to avoid mismatch, or is that part of the tone? . In your discussion with Dave Freidman Ed used a "Stick of dynamite" i.e. load resistor out of one of the speaker outputs and therefor only one cab? I would think that would change the way the amp reacts depending on the impedance of the resistor as well as quiet it down. Curious as to whether or not you have tried that and if it's worth demonstrating? @@jegauss

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  5 місяців тому

      @@JimmyDevere Ok, so I've always heard / remember that Ed used the 8 ohm output with one 16 ohm cabinet. That's how I've always done it, too. The intentional mis-match gets you a more open, less compressed sound. Now, I also remember that when Ed setup his touring rig for the 5150 tour, the first time he used a load resistor (at least that he admitted), it was the same thing - 8 ohm tap, but the load resistor was 20 ohms. So the mismatch is intentional.
      As far as that "stick of dynamite" goes - I've always taken another view of it. Ed said it was "hooked up to the fuse holder." of the amp. That makes more sense to me. You don't see variacs on any of the '79 tour rig pictures (not that there are many), but you just don't see them. So, I'm thinking we take him at his word - they were hooked up to the fuse holder. They could've done it on the mains fuse, reducing the voltage a fixed / consistent amount, instead of dialing it in with a variac - or it could've been hooked up to the H.T. fuse holder, which is the B+ of the amp - that would've worked as well. Same type of thing. It's just a difference in where you place the voltage drop within the circuit. So, I kind of always thought of it that way. Ed originally called it a big capacitor, but I think they were just big ohmite resistors and the knocked the voltage down to the amp. I believe he made those statements in the April '80 Guitar Player interview.

      Interesting regarding the impedance mismatch and the voltage load.... Are you still pulling two tubes and variaced down or do use all four power tubes?
