With tongue firmly planted in cheek, our drummer Jon, my brother, wrote the outline for the lyric for this one - Doug finished it and "polished" the lyric - it's raunchy, and full of all the debauchery one would come to expect from a rock band in that era... The song also features a double kick, shuffle pattern that might sound kind of familiar, along with an unusual modulation / "key change th...
Queen Criticize

This song was the last song on the album - it was written in the studio as we were finishing up the album. The lyric was essentially a 180 off from the rest of the album - where (most) of the other songs on the album were about "Love Tonight," Take My Heart," She's the One," etc...this one was called Queen Criticize and came from a completely different side of things. This whole album was recor...

Flying Tigers Up and Down

Today's continuation of the Flying Tigers First Strike album posts - if you haven't seen the history on these posts, check my previous posts...I've been posting one of our songs "sporadically," as I get a few minutes here and there... This one is called "Up and Down" - and is a 180 degree departure from yesterday's post of "Concerto for Today." This one features a bit of a "naughty" lyric, and ...
Flying Tigers - "Concerto For Today"

Recorded and released in 1992 - from the Flying Tigers First Strike Album Rolling out more of the Flying Tigers First Strike album today...this one was written by Doug Jones - it had a lot of "moving parts," so much so, that we teased him - and the working title was Doug's Concerto - or just "the concerto." Part of that stuck when the song got named - this one is called "Concerto for Today." Ki...

This is song number 2 in my continuation of posting music from our (the Flying Tigers) first album...same history (listed previously) is listed below I've been meaning to do this for a long time, but I just haven't gotten to it - anyway, way overdue. This was a band that I was a part of in the early 90s - it started with Doug Jones, Myself, Jeff Masino and Michael Flagg. That lineup ended up no...

The Flying Tigers - a band that tried, but didn't make it - wrong time, maybe - early 90s The beginnings of "grunge rock" - we weren't that, a hold-over from the 80s...This album was recorded in 1992, and the band played live until about 1995-1996. The band members that wrote and recorded this song and the album, were Jim and Jon Gaustad and Doug Jones. The live version of the band added Sean F...

    To me there's only a few guys that can nail the tone- Jim Gaustad, Top Jimi the profile maker and pete thorn. It's amazing how many internet guys think their tone is dead on but it's way off. You can just feel it when the tone is exact Eddie.

    Super 70 for the Win. . When playing those chords, It has greater 'clarity' and you can hear each string clearly with little or no 'note bleed' The DiMarzio , is 'too much of too much'' ..The brutally powerful Ceramic Magnet combined with a Red Hot Wind = comparatively more mush than the Super 70s A8 magnet.. Im developing a variation on the Super 70 using a super rare "Short A8" magnet ...Its promising to have phenomenal clarity with no ice pick in the treble.

    Hey Jim, I've always loved the black and white Frankie. I have a white Charvel with black pick guard, and I think the black striped paint job would look really good on it. Man, the Floyd floating trem is so touchy though. Since my coma ( battling pancreatic cancer right now), I play kind of heavy handed. While muting the strings the notes often drop in pitch. Enough whining from me. Thanks for what you do brother. You are much appreciated.

    Not sure if youve covered this on your channel. Is there an accepted ballpark figure of the EQ curve they used for Unchained? I know you stated it is not the point of this video to match the post processed guitar sound. But now im very curious what is possible with the quality FX Loop in this amp. Judging by the isolated tracks I can tell his tone was slightly scooped in the mids. Possibly a bump in the lows .

    Hey Jim, What do you think of the possibility that Ed used two amps on 1984? First would be his holy grail Marshal on 10, 2nd would be another plexi on 5 or so.

    I never understood why anyone would go to these lengths to replicate someone else. Especially when you will never even sound like Eddie even though you had the same gear, studio, mixing mastering as him. Find your own sound, your own style. Be yourself, create something new. Being a copycat will get you nowhere.

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss 17 днів тому

      You know, I don't necessarily disagree with you - but you really ought to worry more about what you do. I actually have had quite a successful career in the music business, way back in the 80s.and into the 90s - Records, all original, tours, etc...I now do this for fun, so you're kind of missing the point of why I do this. It's fun, people really enjoy it, and I actually have the history and knowledge of the tape, mixing, mastering, in a lot of those old, famous analog studios. So if I can pass on a little history of a legend, and people like it, well maybe you shouldn't be quite so judgmental...but hey, thanks for watching...

    Great channel -very informative. Jim a couple of pickups to consider = Schaller Hot Stuff bridge for FW and the Dean Time Capsule bridge for 1. Also, one more notable pickup that nails the 5150 sounds, specifically Summer Nights = Schaller Golden 50. Just listen to Mcauley Schenker Group song Gimme your love - when the dude starts singing. Killer yet slightly brighter than Eddie. Every time I have recommended the Time Capsule, people are blown away at the musicality.

      @jegauss 17 днів тому

      Thank you! And, thanks for the tips...you know, way back in the 80s, I had a Schaller that came out of one of the Kramers of the day. I loved that pickup for a long, long time - but, years ago, one of the coils went bad. I probably ought to get it repaired. It was their "PAF-ish" one - not the higher output ones that they offered a few years later. Anyway - thanks for watching and thanks for reaching out.

    Not once did you brag about your playing, so I will do it for you. Your covers are nearly perfect. Yes the tone is spot on, but hive yourself some credit, the solos and licks are nearly identical. You have a real ear for this. Excellent work, thank you for this video. Will be watching repeatedly to school myself on this album.

    I'm 65 and was fortunate to see VH six times in concert. Was in college when their first album came out, and the first time I saw them was in 1980 on the WACF tour. I was so excited at the time....they were awesome. We had great seats and I've got a good picture of Eddie jumping off the drum riser. (Had to smuggle a 35 mm Pentax in to the venue.....lens in one sock and the camera body in the other. It was difficult to walk without feeling that they would slip out of my socks or a bouncer would see!) Being a retired engineer, I thoroughly enjoy your deep dives, Jim! Thank-you!

    I find the hardest part about this tone is the fine balance between getting enough gain to be able to do the pinch harmonic in the intro but not so much gain that it sounds wrong. I think the pickup matters A LOT for this particular song.
