I love when editors treat the video footage like a physical object you can pick up, move around, squish and jostle. very fun. good job editor we love you
I agree with your view on Civ 7. When it was announced, I was very excited. The more gameplay and features they show, the less excited I become. Im in a point where I will not buy, but wait for you to play it and see how it is.
Classic problem with these games is features get planned for expansions. The initial game tends to look less interesting. I waited a long time to buy civ 6, and I think that ends up being the optimal thing to do. Get to see the complete package, and buy a bit cheaper. The thing that can help there is to make mods, particularly AI mods, more practical. See Warcraft/Starcraft where some players basically only played custom games. I'm a bit hopeful that will improve, but we'll find out.
Yeah, Civ 7 doesn't look like a Civ game so much as Humankind 2.0. The premium cost is a tough pill to swallow too, considering how DLC heavy I'm sure it will be.
Yeah I'm definitely in the same boat. I'm still very curious about the game but won't be buying on launch until I can see some complete gameplay. I love Civ 6, but the parts I love are not in Civ 7, just like Potato said. I really don't like when developers take a great game and completely change it when they bring out a sequel. I'm still haunted by Super Mario Brothers 2.
While preserves can have nice tile yields, they also have value for getting housing in cities that don't have the ability to have farms, and sometimes it's worth putting them near coastal tiles, mountains or other districts even if you lose some yields. They're really great used this way for Khmer and Inca.
Interesting to hear your views on Civ VII, mostly because I think I feel the same way. I was excited when it was announced, but the more I learn about the new features - or really about the features that have been removed - I'm worried it will disappoint, hugely. I'm hopeful that it will surprise me, but my expectations are low. I'm worried they have moved too far away from what has made Civ VI such a great game.
Which features were removed that has you worried? I do agree that it is a big step away from how Civ6 functions, but I don’t see that as a bad thing. If you prefer Civ6 gameplay, it will still be there for you to play. Civ7, to me, looks like a far more dynamic game with lots of moving parts and more player control over how each civ and city develops, which I am quite excited for.
@@TheChocolateChiken One of the biggest things I worry about is compensating for the removal of builders; the simple existence of them allowed for so much customization of a city's land, and I'm uncertain about whether they're doing enough to compensate for that loss. I understand that late-game builders are a pain, but they are fundamental to how the game works and I'm worried about the future without them.
You were my most watched gaming channel of this year in my youtube recap lol it said i was top 0.4% of viewer and it said I watched 18x as much as the average viewer. When I'm about to go to sleep I leave your videos on my tv and I sometimes just leave it all night
@Laszlo5897 it's a wonder that adds many additional canal districts to either city, which is 2 tiles for the industrial complexes in each city done right, +10 gold and a crossing for naval units. Properly used it is a very strategic wonder.
I have learned after many potato videos that potato doesnt exactly enoy playing civ, as much as he simply enjoys simming in civ for 200 turns. RELATABLE
I've been playing with Luigi's preserve/garden mods. They make the preserve (and new garden) more specialized since they no longer just give you all yields and don't give housing. They're more interesting to play with, less over-powered since they no longer give free food and production and give either science/faith/diplo or culture/gold/tourism but not both.
Honestly I still can't get over how his capital's position is basically an impregnable fortress with numerous chokepoints leading to chokepoints. Its wild how its a nigh perfect fortress geographically.
I agree that I'm not feeling that excited about CIV VII. However, looking back through the years since I started playing with Civ Rev back in '08, I think every new iteration was always met with "cautious optimism" by me at least. They change a lot between games! Its often feels quite jarring to read what is going to be different from what we're used to and there's always the chance that despite their reputation, it won't be well received. Still, as a community member in high standing both with fans and the devs, I think we'd be very interested to hear what makes you nervous!
Really loving the series, definitely think you should get some encampments in your cities bordering Alexander, seems risky to put it off knowing deity AI.

It would be really cool to see you attempt a religious or diplomatic victory in one of these videos! I feel like you always go for that culture victory, which ends up a bit samey after a while.
Reefs are way underutilised. There needs to be like a 10% chance a reef forms if you sink a ship in coastal waters, or a tech that allows builders or military engineers to make one. Or both. Reefs should also act like woods, hills and rainforest tiles for ships in terms of movement restrictions. Perhaps in exchange for some damage to the unit, you can ignore the movement restrictions.
Hey potato! Just curious if youre still playing disaster files/ viewer games to point out what they did wrong? I recently picked up civ 6 and i thought i was doing really well but i seem to have completely stalled out. Would love some guidance, criticism, tips, explaining why i have no good place for a science district despite having 7 cities. And what ive done wrong. All good if not figured it couldnt hurt to ask. Its a roman prince standard continents file about 50% through the game.
I always got a lot of tourism from all my my city walls build before they go obsolete, but I keep seeing them being skipped over in favor of other buildings.
Agree with you on your feeling about Civ 7. It seems like they've changed a bunch of very basic, super bedrock things about Civ that really didn't need to be changed. It sort of feels like another game trying to feel like Civ
I swear every time I find Kandy and make it my suzerain, I cannot find any natural wonders to make use of its effect, or I find wonders too late to make it worth while, or I've already found the nearest ones around me and the effect is moot
@4:30 Potato, I'm all for being cautious when it comes to a new game in a beloved franchise but there's really no need for this gloomer outlook. It's the same kind of negativity that permeates fanboy mentality. As a long time Civ player (playing since Civ 1) I love Civ 6 but franchises can't remain stagnant There comes a time when new things have to be tried to break out of the mold. Even if Civ 7 has some shortcomings, that are actually shortcomings and not just... lacking the accoutrements that we've grown accustomed to for a game that has had 6+ years of post-launch support like Civ 6... look at it as an opportunity to see the game grow and evolve over time and you can (and like will) have the opportunity to shape its future. I for one am cautiously optimistic about Civ 7, it looks like a very thoughtful redesign of a 4x game that tries to address the inherent problems of 4x design. Even if certain things don't grab us immediately we should at least try to understand why the changes were made in the first place. Even Ed Beach acknowledges they may not get everything right at launch and that's okay, Civ as a game has a lot of moving parts, but there's every indication that Firaxis will be there with tons of post-launch fixes, patches, and content that will make the game shine. I know I cannot wait to get my hands on it.
Lots of people put lots of effort into lots of things that die and fail miserably. Firaxis is a big company full of adults they’re are not above criticism and they won’t fail because you are critical. If anything withholding judgement because you… don’t wanna hurt their feelings (?) is worse than just offering said criticism. Civ 7 is not a child you need to cheerlead for, it’s a video game by a company for profit and it can benefit from criticism.
I have just seen the basics of the reveal and thought it might be okay, but certainly something I will watch a few streams of before considering buying
It’s so nice to go from watching Potato McWhisky vids from 3 years ago to having a brand new one posted!

Similar. It seems like too many large changes all at once. I hope it turns out great, but I'm not hopeful.
Same. I was hoping for a streamlined/fixed/tweaked Civ6 experience. Looks like a complete redesign into a game I don't want to play.
Classic problem with these games is features get planned for expansions. The initial game tends to look less interesting. I waited a long time to buy civ 6, and I think that ends up being the optimal thing to do. Get to see the complete package, and buy a bit cheaper.

I feel exactly the same way about Civ 7. Idk about it based on what I’ve seen. Just really different.
I was inspired by this to start a new game myself as the Khmer, the perks with the Holy Site, River and Aquaduct are insanely strong.

There looks to be a beautiful panema canal between vymapura and lingapura. I love panama canal.
