Maybe it's an age thing, because I'm a gen -X, but I was told in my high school Fashion Arts class that a-line means those swinging 60s dresses. The "A" starts at the shoulders/chest. The other style is fit-and-flare, not a-line.
I agree, and half those fit-and-flare dresses don’t even have a-line skirts. A-line isn’t as ruffled as that, it has a flatter surface. The A refers to the angle of the side seams.
I have been loving any and all fish motif, mostly because ive been loving shark motifs for years now so it only makes sense to expand into more fish genres
I feel like the fish motif is a continuation of the tomato girl/mediterranean summer thing we've been seeing for a while. It also follows the trend of tinned fish that started a couple years ago with brands like fish wife making us pay more attention to the packaging design for fish products (just look at the very popular Staud sardine bag). I find it interesting that both this fish trend and the classic new england preppy lobster look have their roots in working class communities of sailors/fishmongers/etc yet focus much more on the glamor of consumption or, in this case, the ability to travel to leisurely mediterranean locations like Italy
I love how you talk about admiring fashion from afar without having to purchase all the threads, I’m rarely on trend but I love your fashion trends videos! Those subtle barrel jeans are an interesting shape that I could possibly see myself wearing but not rushing out to buy for sure!
I in general love eclectic bags, or bags that show your hobby. Sometimes i wear my hipquiver as an extra bag and it has the added bonus of making me feel like a tolkien/fantasy elf especially coupled with dresses!
for no reason fish motifs have been my new thing!!!!! i sewed a fish on a shirt last fall and the obsession has not left i now have a fish key chain, fish jorts, and two more shirts!!!
I like that you include trends you're not going to participate in. It feels very pleasant to have fashion be about appreciation, not just consumption. For some reason I've never thought about it that way before
To me, A-line is a description that can apply to multiple things. For example, the 60s dresses you showed are Trapeze dresses, which have an A-line from shoulder to hem. The fitted bodice dresses have skirts with an A-line, from waist to hem.
make one of those little net hats!! they are so quick and easy to crochet!! I like crocheting mesh in general because it's really quick and you can make a lot of mesh fabric from a little bit of thread because it mostly consists of holes :P
i really appreciate you saying that you're not going to buy certain trends, just admire them from afar. it's so easy to get suckered into a trend because it looks cool but regardless of whether you'll actually wear it. mandy lee said recently "i think you can love clothes without constantly having to buy them" and she's right!!! also in re: fish motifs - i'm a fashion brand company stan and they have a whole bunch of fish print pieces right now! granted, the fishes are like. anglerfish and piranhas. but still a fun interpretation of a fish print!
i have fallen head first into Knightcore, so hard. making it casual has been so so fun. Any kind of fantasycore has just been bringing me so much joy. Life is short, I wear elf ears to the grocery store lol
Omg do you have any tips on how to make it more wearable for everyday? I love fantasy and the medieval age but I can't figure out how to make it work... I've tried searching for inspo with the term knightcore, but I'm having a hard time finding a starting point. Maybe I just need to get comfortable looking slightly "costume-y"?
A-line dress for me is when the whole dress has the a-line shape. The dresses that flare out at the skirt i would say has an a-line skirt as opposed to the overall silhouette being a-line
how cool!! Do you know if she has socials? I tried reverse image searching because I wanted to see if there were other angles of the shirt skirt, but no luck :/ she looks cool!
I'm so glad barrel jeans (the subtle kind you also prefer) are popular. I love the silhouette they give to the entire body, how it's curvy without having to be tight around the wearer's actual curves.
I wonder if the fish trend follows the tinned fish explosion of the past few years. Besides saving money a huge appeal of those cans is how cute they look, esp the Trader Joe’s ones !
The attitude you're talking about at 1:36 is SO common, and yes it holds us back from what makes us happy! It's why I love NYC for style; there is literally always going to be a crazier person than you in the city -- whether on fashion or really anything else. It's freeing to embrace things outside of the norm! Also I personally would probably not even realize you had a double bag! I'd think they came together as a set and would be wondering where to get one for myself. ❤ Also interesting hearing about subtle barrel jeans from you! I kind of feel like they started in full force a year ago for me. I love them so much and they're a great wide leg alternative.
Just remember when you go out to the flea market or the farmers market, you're always carrying a tote and your purse. Using two bags at the same time is the same thing. Also my version of barrel jeans are mom jeans like vintage '80s, mom jeans that have the tapered bottom and the wider in the hips high in the waist.
I’m pretty sure A-line in garment making is just to describe the shape of “smaller at the top that goes straight down to wider at the bottom” i.e the shape of the letter “A”. So the dress you associate with A-line has an A-line skirt, as it’s smaller at the waist and flares out/down. These mod dresses are A-line but they start at the shoulder and flare up/down. I would also describe things like baby-doll sleeping gowns as A-line or even a pair of pants as, “having an A-line shape”
the red accent thing. I honestly think it's going to be a lifelong thing for me. I kinda sorta already used to do it with lipstick/jewelry/ribbons in my hair, seeing it become a trend has only incouraged me to do it more and with intention. It just works.
I hadn't seen many of those knitwear skullcaps but I was obsessed with all the headwear in Dune when I saw it! Also thanks so much for featuring my necklace, I'm so glad you like it!!
I’ve been seeing fish everywhere too! particularly this one fish shaped knife keychain I really want for work. It’s so cute and would be such a fun accessory on my work key set at the zoo
From what I understand, A line is about the silhouette of the dress or skirt. Its not really ruffled, but the important thing is that it creates that triangular shape. In the case of the 60s dress, they dont have waistlines and the entire dress creates the shape. In newer interpretations, it refers to the shape of the skirt. Its sharper, less drapey, and expands outward from a narrow top
I also surprised myself with liking the barrel jeans! I finally found a pair that I liked and wasn't a designer jean that costs like 300 bucks. It's on its way to me and I'm so excited!
A-line is a dress who has the form of the letter A. It's close fitted to the shoulders and flares all the way until the hemline without touching the body at all. Like the letter A. It's the whole silhouette, not partial ( like only the skirt of a dress)
I found it takes a lot of self confidence to wear out-of-the- ordinary clothes, or bright colors, or fun trends like the double bag, especially if you live in area where people arent particularly adventurous with fashion. The netted caps are SO CUTE. I've never seen anyone wear it in the wild, but I would love to try!
I think that A line just refers to the triangular shape of these dresses. Whether the top of the A is that the shoulders or the waist, they both follow that triangle A shape!
A line dress/skirt is simply anything in the shape of a classic letter "A" (the one with a bit of a horizontal line at the top), so it flares out, but not as much as a circle skirt does. The ones you shared are A line too, but they can also be called "fit and flare" dresses (and some are a bit too full for A line). So A line is basically describing a garment in the shape of a capital A (as opposed to a tube dress/skirt, circle skirt, mermaid...) and it doesn't get it's fullness from gathering fabric at the waist or under the bust (like regency dresses), but relies more on tailoring the fabric with multiple (at least two) A shaped pieces, to get the flare at the bottom and be more fitted at the top. If it's a dress it can be a babydoll style or have a fitted bodice and then start to be A shaped under the bust 😉. So it's pretty broad term.
About fish motifs! I’m literally making a pair of koi pond themed pants rn with lily pads and koi fish as I watch this!! I think fish motifs are a great DIY project because fish are SO EASY to paint! Like, realistic fish!! I’m not kidding!!! Go make yourself some fish pants 🫵🫵🫵🫵🫵🫵
SCREAMING!!! I recently started knitting back in January and I took to it so hard (so DIY there) but the thing that got me started was this salmon cardigan I saw on Murder She Wrote bc I want it so bad!!! And the salmon cardigan example you gave in the fish motif section IS THE EXACT ONE!!! I need her so bad
as a person who loves small handbags and carries essentials in them all the time but still needs to carry a tote for extra storage (like food and drinks or an extra layer of clothing) - ive gotten so used to having this double bag look but this video really inspired me to put a lil more thought into the tote bag too, to make it look more fun than just a black bag
Fashion I'm loving currently is my mum's old slipdress from 90s (I recently found out she got it as a hand-me-down too) that I have gotten a ton of use out in the last 6 months, especially at work because it's neat and makes everything else look a little fancier! And I'm so happy about it since it had been sitting within my collection of clothing items for a good decade without much action until my sibling helped me style it a year and a half ago~
Honestly, I like the idea of a subtle barrel leg jean/pant, but they never look right on my body. I'm short and pear shaped, I hate the way I look in anything barrel leg, even if it's very subtle. It extentuates my already wide hips and it makes me look generally wider, shorter and more shapeless. I've tried multiple times and it's absolutely not for me. It's a great look on other people, though! I'm sure you could rock this style!
A line is means shaped with a slight downward diagonal. Without a waistline, it would look like a sheath. With a waistline, it looks like a light fit and flair.
I personally consider A-line as something with a fairly straight-ish line downwards from either the shoulders or waist, and the bottom is obviously the biggest part (hence "A"). It could refer to an entire dress or maybe just a skirt. So like, in my head, it would exclude something like a mermaid or trumpet dress because the flair is too low, a body-con dress because it doesn't flair at all, or those 80s clothes with the enormous shoulder-pads because the "A" would be upside-down So in short, I personally think the 60's mod dress as A-line qualification would vary by how flared the bottom is compared to the rest of the dress
I am french and in France we call the babydoll dress "robe patineuse" and the thing you call A-line-dress "robe droite" or sometimes "mini robe droite" ☺️
im genz/mellenial and to me A-line was always those 60s silhouette dresses,. Also similar to the fish motif ive been really into jellyfish and shark motifs and ofcourse they happen to be my favorite sea creatures lol
There’s a free crochet pattern for a Juliet Cap by Margie Dougherty on Ravelry. Looks like a wearable version of the skull cap idea. Maybe I should get my crochet hook out 🤔
Also, I love the new to me tip to add a bag on a bag. Thank you for that. I bought a pair of the Free people barrel jeans. I do love them but it's hard if you have any extra weight on you so I was looking for another cheaper pair And serendipitously I found for like $3 at the thrift store a pair of men's hard denim no stretch Levi's that when I cuff the and do the '80s fold at the ankle makes them look very barrel ly. I'm thrilled!
The 60s/70s mini dress is not a trend to me, it's an essential element of my summer wardrobe. I've got a little collection of vintage ones by now, and I can't wait until it's warm enough to wear them again :)
I believe a line is just technically referring to the skirt shape. So the bodice part of the dress can be wildly different . Its really just not a great way to name a dress regardless 😂
Yay DIY! It's always stylish; happy to see more folks enjoying it. Loved the shot of the hand-beaded white sleeve cuff. I made a fish woodcut in November & bought fabric ink for it, then got busy. You've reminded me to pick it back up 😸 thank you!
My current fav things is accessories on the outside of the bag it’s very cute and the bag have a personality, also chunky necklace charms I love it style dolce gabanna
I personally have a pare of pana Barrel pants (the goofie ones) for a couple of years and i realy love them. Thay are the most confortable pants ill never have. They are a aclasic of japanese pattern and look super stilish if you take inspo of yoji yamamoto or that kind of japanese confi, functional stile in general.
I've been getting into brooches/old-timey pins, shear, velvet, silk, platforms (always loved platforms since early 2000s), deep scoop necklines and square necklines (always), wearing loose button-ups mostly open with just one or two buttons done (when appropriate). the kind of vibe of the casual clothes in the All Creatures Great and Small shows.
I'd say fish motifs are in! Tinned fish is its own trend thats in. Not fashion but relates to general ~aesthetics~ in a way We got some REALLLLYY cute block printed fish dish towels at my work (the store is under the anthropologie & urban outfitters umbrella) and I thought of you when I saw them !!!
I've had a cool chainmail fish necklace that I've had for ten years plus and always get so many compliments when I wear it. Usually only worn with my pirate outfit lol but I should wear it more!!
I have been on my own style journey with lots of DIY! I have been learning to sew, embroider, and crochet to make clothes my own as well as making my own dangle gauges! Love customized/personalized clothes! Also if you want to make one of those head pieces i recommend getting a skein of yarn you like crochet a basic chain that hugs your head enough to stay in place (should not feel tight) and then you do a double crochet mesh stitch! It's super simple and would be an easy quick project for a beginner.
YES ppl should take credit for their puns !! I personally am a fan of puns. Recently I was noticing that it’s almost like a phrase to prompt a laugh / draw attention to the pun, but a lot of the time with the delivery, I am like you scripted this pun 😂 what do you mean “not intended” besides puns are THE best
Just wanna say I love binging your videos. Your channel was a recent discovery for me and your videos never miss. PS. I’ve never been this early to a video I’ll grab my snack and keep watching 😉👏🏾💕
As a seamstress, A-Line to me means a quarter circle skirt or pieced skirt that's approximately the same fullness as a quarter circle. It IS fit & flare but not very full (like an A or an accute triangle). I think of fit & flare with more fullness as skater dresses (ie 3/4 to full circle skirt), as they are very pretty for spinning. Fashion marketing ruined what things are logically called.
i also can’t tell if fish motifs are in, or if it’s just because i love them! i got a fish printed shirt like 6 years ago and that got me started 😂 also, i loooove your fish dress! you’ve inspired me to look for a dress that’s that shape
I'm loving that DIY (also thrifting, actually) are becoming more trendy and mainstream. I think there has been a stigma around it, like you would only make clothes yourself if you were poor, and so it was undesirable. (Obviously, there's nothing inherently wrong with having less means, but it is still seen as something negative, unfortunately...)
Barrel jeans are just dad jeans, mom jeans or slouchy pre-pandemic jeans depending on the retailer haha 😭 Aside from the very exaggerated version that look like clown pants, retailers are just rebranding.
@@sj-el4lu agreed. Phone, keys, wallet, earbuds. Big bag for toiletry bag, reusable utensils, water bottle, stowing purchases or snacks or neat rocks or whatever
The barrel jeans thing feels to odd to me. Fair enough with the obnoxious horseshoe style but the barrel style was really popular at the beginning of 2020. I bought two pairs in the first UK lockdown. They were often styled with the Frankie Shop shoulder pad t-shirts.

Yes, also like the classic A line skirts of the seventies. I’d describe those dresses as the New Look of the 50s.

God I love your videos so much, so inspiring & thoughtful! They always get me excited about clothes again after a bit of a getting-dressed slump ❤
A line is anything narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. Like the letter A. Like the 60’s dresses. Those modern ones are fit and flare.
Not fashion but relates to general ~aesthetics~ in a way
We got some REALLLLYY cute block printed fish dish towels at my work (the store is under the anthropologie & urban outfitters umbrella) and I thought of you when I saw them !!!
Liz, you are my favorite fashion UA-camr! You’re so real, and go beyond the basic fashion everyone wears! You inspire me sm
I've had a cool chainmail fish necklace that I've had for ten years plus and always get so many compliments when I wear it. Usually only worn with my pirate outfit lol but I should wear it more!!
I'm currently OBSESSED with fish motifs
Another banger from Liz
you are the coolest i adore your style and your content ! please never stop being you !!
omg this is so sweet, thank you!!🥹
I have been on my own style journey with lots of DIY! It's super simple and would be an easy quick project for a beginner.
ooh the fish motif! I'm putting a fish bag into my crafting to do list that is too cute!
My current fashion obsession is flowy, eclectic, colorful caftan/mumu dresses.
Yes, I have seen the fish motif popping up as a trend. I also am quite enjoying the creative ways it’s being used in clothing, jewelry, footwear.
when peplum started popping up i knew chunky necklaces weren’t far behind. i’m sooo into it
Im currently obsessed with ponchos and capes and mustard yellow
Just wanna say I love binging your videos. Your channel was a recent discovery for me and your videos never miss. PS. I’ve never been this early to a video I’ll grab my snack and keep watching 😉👏🏾💕
omg this is so kind thank you!! I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos :')
Awesome video again, Liz! ❤
The crochet head piece could be a cute DIY video theme.
I need that red cowoby shirt!!!!
It's a hand-me-down from my mom from the 80s or 90s!! truly a prized possession :)
"Adding more storage to your outfit is objectively more practical" : did I just watched Liz's Tedex to women's fashion industry ? 😍
Yes to the fish, and yet I’ve been into fish motifs for years so- who can say!
Also I totally agree about the aspirational nostalgia
I'm loving that DIY (also thrifting, actually) are becoming more trendy and mainstream. I think there has been a stigma around it, like you would only make clothes yourself if you were poor, and so it was undesirable. (Obviously, there's nothing inherently wrong with having less means, but it is still seen as something negative, unfortunately...)
i actually have those fish earrings. i am glad i didn't get rid of them.
Barrel jeans are just dad jeans, mom jeans or slouchy pre-pandemic jeans depending on the retailer haha 😭 Aside from the very exaggerated version that look like clown pants, retailers are just rebranding.
practical fashion girlies, what are we putting in each bag in the two bag trend??? absolutely need to know
I'd treat the smaller bag as if it were a front pocket of the bigger bag and stash high-touch, small items there like Airpods, keys, and wallet.
@@sj-el4lu agreed. Phone, keys, wallet, earbuds. Big bag for toiletry bag, reusable utensils, water bottle, stowing purchases or snacks or neat rocks or whatever
@@sj-el4lu ooo i love that thank you ! :)
The barrel jeans thing feels to odd to me. Fair enough with the obnoxious horseshoe style but the barrel style was really popular at the beginning of 2020. I bought two pairs in the first UK lockdown. They were often styled with the Frankie Shop shoulder pad t-shirts.
barrel jeans make me think of scurvy
Yes same with a line! But it makes sense, a 60s minidress does look like a capital A shape lol
agreed!! like honestly A-line for that trapeze shape (another term I forgot to mention lol) makes way more sense
I just love you liz, you are an inspiration to me
