There's nothing wrong with finding your niche as an author. Out of Love was a beautiful exploration of difficult themes and I have no doubt that the new one will follow suit
i’m so glad you’re taking your time. the commercialisation of books prevents people from remembering writing is an art form. take your time and remember you’re doing this for you.
Congrats on the US launch! I'm a bookseller here at B&N in the States and we're promoting it in October as one of our monthly picks. I'm excited to talk about it with everyone!
Happy Birthday Hazel. I believe that no matter what age we turn in 2023 that everyone should celebrate it in any way that they can and do it the best that they want to with friends and family. It should be celebrated in an awesome way.
hazel i am in love with your room and the cozy but clean vibes. it feels like a save point, an end goal, the opposite of liminality, if that makes sense. it’s warm but also not stressfully organized or disorganized. it just feels organic and natural and beautiful.
Out of Love is a comfort read I keep returning to, even when I'm in a reading slump. The audiobook is sometimes what I use to fall asleep, my favorite chapters playing out as I drift off. I think Canadian Geese is one of my favorite chapters I have ever read. I also love Splinter and Le Petit Mort and Summer Skin and overall the whole book. Thank you for sharing your work. It is beautiful and raw and witty and insightful, I look forward to anything you come up with next.
hearing you talk about knowing the themes but not being able to give a plotline reminded me of that thing which was like "what is a plot if not just the thing carrying us from one emotionally horny scene to another" which i love because i don't care what the book is about i care what its *about* !!!
Out of Love was phenomenal, and I’m looking forward to whatever comes next. Somehow, although the subject matter is entirely different, your writing inspires me for my own project - even if I’m not quite ready to call it a novel yet!
Happy Birthday Hazel. I wish you the best birthday that you can have in this new year of 2022 and pray that whatever your plans are for today all your dreams come true on your birthday today.
Just because you're going back to the same themes doesn't mean you can't look at them from a new lense. I still haven't been able to read Out of Love, but I'm very excited to do so and any future books you come out with! Very excited for you ❤️
I've waited for the audiobook to experience Out Of Love. So many times in the past year I went back continually to the videos of you reading your first chapter and it somehow brought me peace in the madness. I'll say this, I don't normally read/listen to things that take place in the real world. But having listened through the first two chapters, this is turning into one of my favorite books I've ever read/listened to. My jaw has dropped at the end of the first chapter, I burst out laughing at the arrival to the narrator's mother's house in the second chapter, and I'm pretty sure I went 'oh god' at one of the narrator's more accurate life observations. I've always loved your view on the world you've shared on this channel. And it's even better in your own voice through the powerful prose you've crafted. I can't wait for whats to come and for the next book you craft, you have a life long fan.
Amazing! I saw you at Hammersmith Apollo (cheering dodie!) the other night and was too scared to join a little queue to speak to you to say how much I loved out of love. It made me cry and broke my heart, and is a credit to you being a wonderful author. I'm selfishly delighted you're writing another, and hope you enjoy this process of writing the second time around. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us.
I really like to hear to talk and ramble, I find you very calming. You feel very genuine and that's not something we find a lot these days. Looking forward to hear more about your writing process
It all made sense! Liminality, what a word. Just finished reading Out of Love, and will patiently wait for your next book… while looking for interviews you might have done about your last haha
So exciting! I absolutely adored out of love and so I know I will love anything you write and share with the world in the future! Also you talking about liminal spaces took me straight back to my English lit degree and I got so excited
I'm psyched for the Out Of Love US release! One of the women I worked at a library with wrote a book, it took her ten years. She's hoping book two won't take that long. Break a leg with book two!!
The way you described the story and it being about liminality and a break up and all that, it reminded me of "happiness" by taylor swift. I'm very excited to see what the book turns out to be, because those are themes i'm also interested in. Also i don't think it's such a bad thing to create multiple things with a similar theme/ atmosphere, because i guess it means that's just an idea you need to work through and understand from different aspects, and if someone needs it then other people will also need it.
I am SO excited for this. Out of love surprised me, it left a gap I've been craving to fill. I knew your writing would be gorgeous but this type of genre is new to me and I was hooked! ( if anyone has any books similar to out of love please let me know, I'd love your recommendations!). Your storytelling is brilliant, and take as long as you need. You're pouring yourself into this book, so take care of it and take care of yourself 💜
Are you still hoping to work more in the film industry? Are you getting involved, experience on sets, writers rooms, etc? If not do you think you will return to it one day? Did you ever get involved outside of youtube things? Because you never really talked about it if you did. How many feature-length screenplays have you written in total throughout your life? Always been curious to ask these questions, best of luck with the new book!
I’m so excited to read the new chapters of Out of Love, and everything you said about your new book resonated with a part of me I didn’t know was there 🤍 I hope you love the writing process, and I’m so excited for when it’s ready for us 🥰
congrats on the US launch! I’ve got to say I’m so jealous that I can’t have both of the book covers- they are so so pretty!! out of love is incredible and I can’t wait to support the next stage of your writing journey!
I keep coming back to the concept of liminality. First of all, thank you for bringing this word into my vocabulary. This is something I'm going through right now. January 2020 I suddenly got super fatigued, and have been that way ever since. And I'm in this state of liminality because we still don't know why. We're still trying to find a diagnosis, or figure out how long I'll be like this. And I honestly think one of the hardest parts about all this is that I don't know when I will be out of this state of liminality. Adolescence, pregnancy, engagements... they all end. There is a specific date and you know it (most of the time) from the beginning. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for giving me a word I didn't know existed so I can better describe to my friends and family what's going on with me.
congratulations on the new book!! I loved the montage at the beginning so much, and as a US person I decided while listening to the rest of the video to finally jump and buy the book and audiobook, and also request it for my local library (as I've been meaning to do for...months, so I can't wait to have it and read it!! :D) And your talk about liminality and writing to explore themes was so fascinating. It reminded me vaguely of one of my favorite albums, grae by Moses Sumney, that explores themes of ambiguity--made me think its sort of like liminality, but in a less temporal sense? idk but ur very cool and i have my first reason to be excited for the year 2023 now
Congratulations on the US launch and I'm pleased you found some inspiration to write a new book and I love the liminal space idea - I'm excited! If I'd watched this prior to this morning I would have said as much when I met you last night, hope you had a great night, lovely to meet you 😊
I going to read One Day and The Midnight Library (I already read The Time Travellers Wife) before I read Out Of Love because they're connected to and I like following the breadcrumbs of influence and inspiration. I'm very excited!
I’m still waiting for the U.S. version and audio book of your first novel, and now there’s a second one on the way. I’m just lucky my Star Wars and Star Trek comic, toy, and novel collections are being bought for a lower price second hand. If I had to pay full retail for al those space opera stories, I wouldn’t be able to afford anything you create.
i audibly gasped when i saw the title, very dramatic of me considering i haven't even read out of love yet but i preordered it a while back and im so ready for it to come in the mail,,, BUT im so excited for this new book itll take years but ive stuck around since 2015 so safe to say im not going anywhere ha
the lack of plot is fine, it’s just called literary fiction lol. if you're interested in the exploration of grief, I recommend Learning to Talk to Plants by Marta Orriols. it's about a woman coping with the loss of her long-term partner, who died right after leaving her for another woman. also, as an American who’s watched you for years, I was so excited to go into my local indie bookstore and ask them if they had your book in stock, which they did! three years of hearing about it and I finally get to read it.
¡¡Well, Fuckin' THANK you, Fuckin' Wonderful!! I'm Fuckin' wonderful too :] Excited to see how you express the strain the stress & tension of transitions creates during this young couple's step over the precipice. Hope much of their deformation is elastic, & what ever plastic deformation this stress adds to their life is mindfully identified, address, & supported♥
Hey Hazel, that retreat looked absolutely dreamy. I'm in desperate need of an escape and something like that. Hope it's not invasive to ask where you went? Thank you xx
Hazel! Your creativity and content have always been an inspiration! Since I started to like making content on UA-cam, my life coach, @lisahaisha, asked me during our retreat here in the Philippines to find the best UA-camr that has content that I find interesting. And gladly, she turned me on to you. Shes a writer too of a transformative book called SOULBLAZING. Keep weaving your storytelling magic!

This video gave me the lightbulb moment I needed for my own current project so thank you 💖☺️💡

If the book comes out in 3 years, It will come out the year I graduate high school. See you in 3 years. I am so proud of you!
I am really looking forward to the second book! Just processing my own breakup from my first serious relationship....
You got this ❤️
