You just broke my brain with the idea that chapters can be like their own short stories. I have so many big ideas for novels in my head and I can't write them at all because I get paralyzed. Maybe if I focus on each chapter as its own story, I can actually get it done.

    • @TheHazelHayes
      @TheHazelHayes  4 роки тому +115

Rose Lalonde Yes! This absolutely helped me tackle my novel. But it works for anything. Just break it down into smaller parts. A book is just chapters. A screenplay is just scenes. Start small x

This was so fascinating. It was so interesting to hear about how dodie writes and sees her songs. She is my favourite singer, i mean she was all over my spotify in review thing. And this whole conversation was just so cool and inspiring i think. I feel like i want to write something even if it's going to be shit.

I wrote a little poem once and I feel like y'all might like it here after this lovely video. Seems applicable today. Cheers x
    It seems to be
    That the greatest things
Are the things I have thought
    But never wrote down-
    Which leads me to think
    That the true epiphany
Comes in the things that I find
Not the things I have found.

does anyone else just have those moments where you're looking at two people and you realize how beautiful and talented and amazing they both are, and in such wildly different ways, too?
    -
(just because you don't see yourself as fitting one particular standard of beauty or talent - maybe one that you're really attracted to yourself - doesn't mean you're not beautiful or talented. you're just yourself, instead of someone else. and that's important. and there will be people who are attracted specifically to what you can offer the world. be yourself, and be patient.)

This is honestly one of my favorite videos. I admire both of your for the personalities that you show in your videos and for your different art. Dodies lyrics always cut right into the raw emotions of a situation. She also uses such vivid and almost gruesomely beautiful word choice. I also love how Hazel writes and how she directs. The feeling of her stories is so unique. It really draws you in and makes you think that you’re going to miss something if you leave early. Hearing both of your processes and how it just pours through you is really interesting as an artist. I am a visual artist and that is exactly how I feel when I have an idea. I have the grab anything to get it down with random add ins that only I understand. Thank you guys so much for sharing.

So so interesting!! As a poet and half-assed novelist I loved hearing the differences between songwriting and prose-writing, especially as so much of what makes both of them effective can be created with different writing methods. This was so interesting, and the obvious passion you both have for your art was so inspiring to watch. Gotta go do some more writing myself now! Lots of love to you both.

The stuff you're talking about applies across all kinds of creativity. You mentioned that people "shouldn't see the seems", and that reminded me of a truism from my work, which is mechanical design. I've often said that if a design looks complicated and impressive, it's badly done; each layer of complication is a patch one flawed concept. Great design has been thought through so thoroughly that the resulting thing is ridiculously simple and unimpressive-looking. Therefore great design often goes unappreciated because after the fact it looks obvious, and you can't conceive of it being done any other way, so you kind of say, well of course you'd design it that way. The layers of thought that got it to that point are hidden if it's done right.

can i just say, without coming off weird, every frame of this video looks like a painting. like, i was listening but also thinking about how all the colours in this frame look really nice together. for the first few minutes i thought this is nice soft neutral lighting and good interior design. then i was thinking maybe your respective skin tones and hair colours just bounce off each other really well? and then i paused the video to figure out what i was seeing and i was just like . . . yeah this is a painting. pausing every few seconds is another position thats totally art worthy. there's a constant flow of motion of hair and light catching eyes and hand gestures that perfectly encapsulate personality . . . so now i'm just paused on 13:25 like . . . do i need to paint this . . .

It's been so long since I wrote a long story and I remember those feelings Hazel is talking about but it's been so long since I actually felt them it breaks my heart. I miss it so much and I want to fall in love with a story again but it just feels impossible to start. I don't have a story I'm passionate to tell, so how can I? I just... I miss it so much.

Ahhhh I missed your sit down talky videos :)))))) This was so calming after a stressful day trying and failing to work from home, feeling very ill and generally losing the will to live! This was so fascinating to listen to especially for someone who has no experience in the writing field but a lot in the listening and reading field

at the end when you’re wrapping it up i imagined you going “and on that note” and then both singing a random note and seeing whatever the hell comes out

I love hearing people talk about the complexity of storytelling through writing and/or composing music because I can't comprehend how some people's minds work that way. I'm decently creative with visual art, but i'm completely lost when it comes to writing

like when you get out of bed at 3:00am to pee or get water or something and you have to run into bed before you lose your tiredness

The fact that Dodie's impulse was to just slap her thigh @ 27:09 to audio match made me *lose* it for some reason, this self isolation is really getting to me asdfkldfs
This was a really insightful video. I'm a fiber artist first (a seamstress by trade), but I write short stories for fun and for gifts for friends quite frequently. I have to walk myself down the lane of the plot I'm intending to tell before I can even start outlining the details. Something about my (diagnosed) OCD forces me to have at least an idea of the beginning, middle, and end before I can even start figuring details out details and character nuances.
For me it's like going to a mall, I always go in with a plan to go to this shop, this shop, and this shop. Most of the time I don't know exactly what I'm going into each shop for, but comparatively I don't usually stray to shops I know that I'm not going to find anything in. In that way, it does help!

This is such an interesting and inspiring video. I loved hearing about your creative processes and I'd love to hear more about it. Regarding efficient storytelling, I feel like Midsommar is a very fitting example. I was honestly very impressed with the way that film conveyed the things it wanted to.
