During the interview, the Security Manager told me you can't stop anyone, pursue them or anything physical. Stupid Companies they call it "SHRINK" they are more worried about an employee stealing ( which I understand) than a shop lifter walking away with $2K worth of merchandise. I'm a 70yr old disabled man, worked over 20 years for Home Depot store 3807(Toledo Ohio) and got fired for going outside and speaking with one of my regular customers who "forgot" to pay for an item. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong because I asked to speak with him nor did I try to stop him or anything overt. The store manager was looking for an excuse to fire me so he could get someone younger and lower pay which someone informed me he said he got rid of me because I was over paid and being disabled couldn't do what a younger person could. Home Depot has no interest in living the Orange Life it's just a load of BS your just a number when you make too much money watch out like a department head warned me in advance you have a target on your back. Over a year and a half since they threw me out like so much garbage and I still hope everyone reading this goes to some other store.

Former HD employee here ……sue, I did for a similar situation and they settled out of court…..while I can’t disclose the amount…. I am doing well, not eligible for rehire but I still retain my stocks and a very generous keep your mouth shut amount
He has more experience than most of any employees at HD. HD has NO respect for associates prior experience. They treat everyone as if they were 18 and it was their 1st job. HD policy says they are not allowed to intercept a thief.. it does not say they are not allowed to assist law enforcement whom might be in immediate danger! This was a trained law enforcement officer assisting law enforcement!! Now HD will replace him with that 17 yr old with No experience. And this guy did not make that much more$$ than an 18yr old. Trust me. I know. Everyone basically get paid the same rate.

I worked with corporate, my manager,and saved my employment. Placed on a strict probation period. It was (as with you) done in the heat of the moment. So, there, that policy CAN be over stepped.

I commend him for wanting to help but he's got no legal case here. Time and time again they tell you do NOT attempt to apprehend a shoplifter, mainly in particular for your own safety. No guarantee the suspect may have a deadly weapon. I may not fully agree with the policy but that's how it is and you can't just follow what portions you want to follow. I wish him luck however finding employment.
Has a former front end manager at the Home Depot. I had to remind my employees not to chase after the shoplifters. It's for their own safety. And the company doesn't want to be liable. It sucks but that's the way it is. They tell you from the beginning.

Store policy is clear & in place for many reasons! #1 being, the associates well being is far more important than any merchandise! Just like your parents teach you “material things can be replaced, you cannot”. Home Depot policy says that the ONLY person who can even approach a questionable individual is ASSET PROTECTION, period! Associates are continually told, as well as signage in certain areas of the store, that if there is any suspicious person in the building, to call AP or the acting store manager.
That also happened in milford ohio . A man that worked the service desk, also an amputee, caught a man shop lifting and assisted the local law enforcement in the apprehension was also fired. Seems like there would be some said about the heroism instead you loose your job. Shame on you big corporate. Unrelated I was also hired on at the same location on a conditional hire stipulation, not fully understanding the loop holes, they used the fact that the background check would take a longer period of time, this was during covid, to come back. They hired me on as a full time employee with a 90 period til my full benefits would kick in. On the 88th day I was asked to turn in my home depot appron and did not make the cut. I was straight forward about the any information pertaining to my self and my history to the HR department then giving them 110% of my abilities as an associate to no avail. Seems like there would be something in place/ employee rights as a standard so that any company can't just use an individual to fill a spot and then tell you to leave. Again shame on you homedepot.

The store in this article has fired 2 men over 60yrs old, high paid, with many years of service in the past 90 days. Not a coincidence.

As a former police officer, he should know better than ANYONE, it’s against Home Depot policy for employees to put their hands on anyone ( criminals included ) within the private property of Home Depot.
