The problem with Product Activation in this context is that the thieves really won't care if the device works or not. They'll sell it out of the trunk of their car, take the money and run.
@@JohnDoe-jl6nh And then unironically return to the store and complain that their power tool they just bought doesn’t work. When presented with the information that it’s stolen, they will act as if they had no clue and blame the person ringing it out for “not activating” the hardware.
@@DrCrabnuts I agree that would happen, but I have a sneaking suspicion the minimum wage worker, who doesnt know or care, will miss alot of "activation codes" lol. The whole idea of subscription services for seemingly everything in our society is super played out and will only stop when people get wise to the fact you spend vastly more over the life of your subscription then just paying the slightly higher up front cost.
Another thing that helps is actually holding the criminals responsible. There's very minimal to no repercussions for shoplifting. Especially if the total is under 1000 dollars.
Keeping a person in prison cost more than $1000. So let's say you sentence the shoplifter 1 year in prison for stealing 1000 dollar of merchandise. Now the tax payers (you) will pay $65,000 (ave cost per prisoner). So in other words that same shoplifter not just stole $1000 from the retail store but stolen $65,000 from you and me. You see a problem?
@@walden6272 But if the shoplifter does it twice a week, it will make more than $100k a year. And consumers will pay the bill since the store will increase prices to overcome losses. I rather help pay the $65k.
@ScrapperNoHand Those countries your mentioning also have fked governments that like to supress the voices of their people. So while their tactics work it wont work for America XD. That's just the truth and I dont even pick political sides
The thing with the product not working if they stole it is a neat idea.. but I have a feeling they'd just find some unknowing person to resale it to .. which would be very awkward with them trying to return it to the store if it doesn't work.

Especially how much money and time it would take to implement that technology that fast. There's no way unless some of those devices already had Bluetooth implemented in them. 99% of drills doesn't have Bluetooth. @@jonaichs1976 Here they would sell you the unit itself without the face plate. They would break into a car and steal the unit but the owner had taken the face plate with them when they locked the car.
The problem with this is that most thieves don't use their stuff; they sell it to unsuspecting people. Also, think about how that Bluetooth-disable feature can be used by companies to stop you from being able to repair your own stuff--they can just program it to auto-disable if you try to take it apart and require you to take it to them, like John Deere has been doing.
yeah thats a bad idea.... almost seems like a conspiracy... why not just increase their physical security like walmart/costco/sams does... keep a security guy at the door...!! wtf
That’s the plan man. Why would states lessen the consequences. Notice BIG companies doing these upgrades while little guys can’t. Open your glued eyes.
Stiffer penalties would be considered racist and would cause retail theft to be substantial pipeline to prison. Public schools can no longer discipline protected groups of students because their violent behavior would pipeline them to prison.
What's sad is that the thief will try and sell the stolen product online to some unsuspecting buyer and when he or she receives it and it doesn't work... well 🤷🏻♀️. Hopefully that doesn't happen.
You should be buying products from reliable trustworthy sellers like......... Home Depot. You will get a warranty too. You won't get a warranty from a thief on ebay.
The “won’t turn on” tech is great for the shoplifters who want to steal it for themselves but it doesn’t mean anything for those thieves who steals it to resell it.
Do you really think they have technology that could keep a simple battery tool setup like a Ryobin power tool from “turning on”? I don’t believe it not one bit…….

Gascon and Boudin, while they might have not have said it explicitly, haven’t been prosecuting shoplifting for a while. Even Newsom is calling them out.
That’s right it’s beyond me how we allow this to happen not long ago they would be waiting for you soon as you left the store and you would go straight to jail.
Around here, first theft is just probation. Second theft is just probation. Third theft is maybe some community service. If you go to a drug treatment program you won't get jail. Systems so messed up.
The locking cart wheels and locked up shelves/cages I’m fine with, and understand why/how that can help Home Depot, but I will NEVER buy a power tool that needs to be activated. To much can go wrong, and there’s very little reward for me as a consumer.

Cart wheel locks have been around for over 10 years. Mostly used to keep people from taking carts off the property and then having to drive around the neighborhood gathering them a couple times a day.
Agreed if I remember right first store they had tried it was in my home city of Mtn View about 20yrs ago! Pre Google since they took over the city now lol
I would imagine that there's a simple way to bypass that. Otherwise, those manufacturers will have a lot of angry customers asking why their $500 saw stops working after 3 or 5 years. We're talking about construction workers who expect a tool to work the moment you pick it up. This is compared with an Apple phone where there's more money in enticing people to buy replacement phones than to repair their existing phone.
What happens when this blue tooth technology fails and the legitimate buyer who bought it from Home Depot can't turn on their tool in the middle of a critical job?
Oh, silly me. I guess it's a no-brainer that the obvious solution is simply to add a creepy killswitch DRM mechanism to all power tools. There's definitely no way that could be a living hell for the average consumer. Brilliant work!
Watching Home Depot starting to use the same cart technology that dollar stores and discount grocers already have, makes me feel much better about this issue. Very innovative.
having security that can actually stop the thief and hold till police arrive to arrest, yes, that includes some physical force or restraint. and then there is the option of prosecuting them, which some DAs refuse to do, and making the laws a bit more severe for the organized retail theft rings and repeaters. that blue tooth thing seems like something that could lead to where you and real buyer and owner, might have to pay a subscription to use and fact that the company might have way of tracking it or receiving info from device later on. seems creepy.
Ok. So the wheels lock up. I guess the thief will just leave everything there. Like ok you got me. Pik up what he can and continue out the door. How about an armed security guard checking receipts? Or better yet have the door electronically lock so they can go out when the alarm goes off. If the product isn't scanned then the chip in the boxes or whatever it is hoes off because it wasn't deactivated. Spend the money in other places . Also it's just the shopping carts that have this what about the other flat bed carts them too?
The "won't turn on" thing is the precursor to being forced to the "subscription" model. You will not actually own the product, you will only license it. As soon as you stop paying the recurring license fee, the product will be deactivated. This is going to be the approach for every product possible as it is much more profitable.
I agree with you 100 percent. Like the cell phone industry and installing their latest "update". Your phone acts sluggish, prompting you to get frustrated......time to buy a new phone.
Unfortunately due to thief’s stupidity everything will go up in value to help cover the cost of technology. It bothers me that everyone has to pay for dishonest and selfish people.

Most times I toss or don't take reciept but luckily those times I kept it and even with reciept they act so weird... Can't imagine if I threw it away
As a home depot employee I watch thieves fill carts and walk out the store scott free. Then come back for more. Loss prevention just shrugs and says we cant stop them....
What happens if you "accidentally" pull the thieves hoodies down or hat off so the cameras can get a better look at them? The police would at least have something to go on when they spot the thieves later on the street. Face recognition software does the rest.
The REAL problem is wealth inequality... ppl steal bc they're desperate to earn decent money. Adjusting for inflation, wages haven't increased since 1981! Blame politicians lack of investment in the people they supposedly serve.
My biggest concern for this is the activation of tools. Sounds like if there’s an error in the software and decides to lock up what would the average consumer do, contact support and they’ll tell them your tool didn’t work because it’s not activated it might be stolen. How’s a consumer supposed to prove besides a receipt? Feel like everything we own one day is going to be licensed to some higher authority(company) and they will decide whether the thing I bought will work or not.
They have to partner with the companies making the tools and convince them to spend extra money on their tools for home depot's benefit. Not gonna happen lol. It was a hopeful line to try and sway people away from theft.
I live in the areas where this stuff happens. I tried to buy something stupid like shampoo from Safeway and it was locked behind bars. Rang bell for assistance and no one showed up. So I don’t go to that store anymore. They might deter shoplifters, but also deter customers.
My hometown would only ever lock up electronics, most of the time still very accessible if under about $70. I move to the city, need a $20 charger only to find out I gotta ask an employee for help. Like dang, when you gonna have thieves result to stealing candy and locking the candy up (already a threat to Halloween candy givers).
I’d like to know why this didn’t work the other day at a HD in NC where a guy was stealing a cart full of Power Tools and when the 82 year old worker at the door tried to stop him - he was beat up and thrown to the ground! No one helped to stop him and the thief got away with everything, in a car waiting just outside! How’s this Working for you?
The locking wheels thing has been around for at least 20 years. I remember them from living in Phoenix AZ in the early 2000s. The Bluetooth battery system is ridiculous.
Haha. If you look at what she’s holding is a Ryobi Circular saw. That does not have Bluetooth in it. On top of that, what they’re saying is completely false, a Bluetooth device is not looking out to the internet to know if it was purchased “legally” before turning on. It would have to: 1. TURN ON in order to connect to something via Bluetooth 🤦🏾♂️ 2. Be connected to an app that would do such verification, which does not exist for any of the power tools purchased at Home Depot. 🤦🏾♂️ 🤣
@@shadir007 "a Bluetooth device is not looking out to the internet to know if it was purchased “legally” before turning on." It's looking to see if the battery has been unlocked. Bluetooth doesn't require internet to work. The "app" is at the cash register.

Let's be honest, none of those devices have the technology not to turn on because it wasn't purchased at the register. You know how much money and time it would cost the manufacturer to do that for their models?
It might not be terribly expensive, honestly. However, I see tracking the items a much more worthwhile endeavor (also, surprisingly inexpensive to achieve). I mean, what's to stop people from learning how to bypass the sensing mechanism anyways?
Where I live they've already locked up all beauty and medicine products as well as detergents too, so this isn't surprising to me at all. Just another hassle for the rest of us that actually pay for products. SMH
Soon you'll have to just order stuff outside and employee will get stuff, get payment and bring it to you. Of course they'll need double the employees or amazon robots so stuff will cost a lot more.
That wheel locking technology has been around for a long time. It used to be used at the outer edges of the parking lot. Going over a limit line, the wheels would lock up, prohibiting the cart from moving.
Initially this seemed like a genuine report but what it ended up looking like is promotion for companies to retain more control over our regular items. Im concerned; if it can be activated than can it be deactivated? Will they ultimately use this to introduce some ridiculous subscription service? $5 a month to continue to use your drill.
And not being able to repair it when it breaks. You and mail it back to us to repair it for a few hundred dollars rather than a $5 part from your local hardware store.
That's my concern as well. It has to be able to be deactivated because otherwise products cannot be returned and resold, so what happens when these tools start to go bad and deactivate themselves? The locks probably don't have an active power supply so it's probably something comparable to an NFC tag meaning that it will just respond to the appropriate device meaning that anyone with that device could lock or unlock the tools so of course the bad guys will get them eventually. And can you imagine the harm if someone used a signal amplifier to remote disable all the power tools in a neighborhood or a work site? I know one thing for sure. Next time I buy a power tool I'm going to make absolutely sure it doesn't have a Bluetooth lock. If it has the lock I'm not buying it.

You get some power hungry idiot who couldn't make it as a cop running outside for his moment in the sun to tackle and beat the hell out of some "suspect" he 'thought' he saw take something or that didn't bow and kiss his feet when he started asking unwarrented questions. Humans aren't capable of wielding power like that. It's sad that stores have to implement expensive measures like this which will, in turn, just get passed on to consumers. They should be prosecuting these types of thefts under RICO laws with mandatory prison sentencing.
Typical American response, throw more people in prison. You DO realize that the costs of prison get passed on to the taxpayer, right? You do realize that America has 5% of the world population with 25% of the prisoners already, right? Maybe try raising the federal minimum wage from seven bucks an hour to an actual living wage.
