I was shopping both laptops, but after seeing the Nitro 5 and Y540 in person I went with the Lenovo. 144 hz screen and more understated look were the deciding factors for me (there were only 60 hz Nitro 5s available). I'm quite happy with my purchase, but will definitely be spending a little more to expand my storage-It's crazy how 1TB used to feel like a lot and now its pretty low LOL.

Thank you very much for this video. I am exactly at the point of deciding which of the two laptops I would choose. Despite being a Lenovo fan (right now I own a Lenovo Ideapad Y700 I think I will switch to Acer Nitro 5. The lack of fan speed control is one point. The other is the two M2 slots. And here in Poland the Nitro 5 is cheaper. Thats enough for me to choose the Nitro 5. I really appreciated how professionally you compared the two products taking into account a lot of theoretical and practical data. Once again thank you very much.
Thanks! Yeah sounds like the nitro 5 would be the better pick in that case 👍
Helped me decide. Thanks and keep up good work
And what you decide?
Thank You very much for your review, it really did help a lot to choose between the two.
Here in my country Legion costs 10% more, and i prefer gaming performance, the Nitro touchpad, lower weight, the Nitro charger, and the wider laptop, because its easier to type on that, also the camera on the top is more relevant in my opinion, and the more adjustable brightness of the keyboard background lights.
Happy to help! Yeah that's fair enough 👍

2:05 I was so much scared about this light bleed that I returned my Nitro 5 and got another piece in exchange. But the new piece also had the same (if not lower) amount of bleed. Then I had to convince myself that it should be a normal thing on every laptop. Had I watched this video earlier, I would have known that there are laptops out there with even worser bleeding 😅 Thanks for showing this in the video. Loved the whole video ♥
The screens on these are pretty good but if you are gaming regularly I'd recommend running a dedicated screen on a HDMI cable

At least the Y540 as a package treats you like the adult you are than the Nitro

What if you think the nitro 5 has a cleaner look to it?
@@altaccount3124 Nah, I like a good old shouty gaming rig. Why be shy about it? But, my wallet was too shy for the Nitro5 on this spec, they were about £100 more than the equivalent Lenovo I looked at!
So I though, nah I need my month's supply of Pizzas and extra foodie goody treats so just plumped for the Y540 =D
Obi-Wan Kenobi yeah, I don’t get it, but that’s okay.
Imagine being such a pussy over some red accents. I guess the twats you work with would have a heart attack yeah? Lol
The Nitro 5 also has waaay better I/O and full fan control, and that's a lot more important to a computer owner than caring about what some uptight person thinks.

When we talk about UA-cam viewing in battery life test, how does that translate in regular use (tabs, Word etc.) ?
I thought by watching this I might be convinced to go gaming laptop over desktop... I don't think I'm impressed with either of these. This is very informational, even if it didn't lead to a sale. Thank you.
I have no idea why anyone would buy a gaming laptop if the only place they use it is at home, nor why would you expect a gaming laptop to impress you over a desktop. Either you're uninformed or delusional, which makes your comment that much worse. I work seasonally in another country and I go back and forth about 3-4 times a year when I'm free for a month at a time. Buying a gaming laptop for home usage is the equivalent of buying a mountain bike to go to your neighbors house. "I thought by watching this I might be convinced to live in a trailer instead of my house. But I don't think I'm impressed with these trailers."
@@Z4J3B4NT for example if you don't have place for a desktop
@@emomorph If you don't have place for a desktop you should either clean up the place and rearrange furniture or keep your priorities straight and try to make money for a bigger place instead of spending €1500 on a gaming laptop. I lived in a small 1.5 room apartment with my girlfriend and we had 2 computers. Mine was hooked to a TV because of lack of space. Then we went to work to Austria and worked 4 seasons there and we sold the place and bought a 3 room one. At the end of it I had a 5 year old computer and I could afford a new apartment and a lot more, including a gaming laptop. Don't stroke your cock on the internet and you'll have everything you need.

I am using Nitro 5 (i7-9750H with GTX 1660 ti, 32GB RAM, 120hz Panel) for the past 2.5 months...totally satisfied! I did refer to this video and make actual comparison 1st hand on my own experience, and in the end decided to go with Nitro 5. Love the looks. Undervolt it to -150V, no more thermal throttling, but still have the problem to eradicate the Power Limit Throttling.. if jarrod could help on this, is much appreciated.
In my region, the price of my Nitro 5 is better than Y540 which did not come with 120hz panel.
I definitely love my acer nitro 5! just got into pc over the past few months and its great starter to intermediate level gaming pc. Great price as well, so if pc gaming isn't your thing, you still a pretty amazing day to day computer that's going to be fast and sleek looking.
Nitro 5, because I love the gamer look especially with the red back lit keys. Here in America I got a brand new Acer Nitro 5 mid year model. It has the I5 10th generation core ect.. It cost me $669.99 American dollars brand new from Best Buy + tax. Im also using it for business. But im a personal boxing trainer, so the aesthetics are not that big of deal to me... Thanks for that amazing breakdown very helpful!

@@Aaron-sy7lo Where?
Now i am more confused that ever.
i just got the lenovo y540 with the same specs except mine has a 144 Hz screen and 1tb hdd + 256 gb ssd. all i can say is that it's absolutely amazing, from design to performance, although running some high demanding games like warzone will make the fans sound quite loud and will be annoying if you're not using a headset, other than that it's worth every penny!
Thanks for the great review! Here in Canada, the Y540 is quite more expensive than the Nitro 5. I'm referring to the 17.3" models. Moreover, while the Y540 includes both a 1 Tb HD and a 256 Gb SSD, the Nitro 5 includes a 512 Gb SSD.
No problem at all, cheers! In that case may as well go the Nitro if the CPU/GPU are otherwise the same 🤔

Great video dude but you should add undervolted and overclocked results for both laptops since almost everyone does that and not many people just use a stock laptop without any undervolting and well the y540 will perform better than the nitro 5 when overclocked and undervolted(since it performed better than the helios 300)
'Almost everyone does that' is not a true statement..
Many are afraid of what it will do. Many understands it but do not want to temper with their own hardware.
Many just buys what manufacturers offer and stay away from tuning to 'ensure longevity of their machines'. And many more look to reviews like this to see what their hardware can do out of the box.
If he adds those variations and the average consumers buys these and uses them out of the box, they will be disappointed, and go hunting on the web to do these tuning. And if all go awry, they will be panicking as to why it doesn't work for them.
Undervolting is definitely niche. I did include undervolted results in the thermals, assuming you're talking about game performance I'm always going to use best stock settings. I do cover a few different games with undervolt/overclocks applied in the full reviews though.
Love the Amon Amarth shirt my dude

This is the best reviewed video ever on yt
Excellent comparison!! Jarrod! We don't know what we'll do without you 🥺 as you are the Top Lap comparison king in our hearts!!
Lemme know how much undervolting u did on the y540

Thanks! I think I just do my usual -0.15v, however the exact amount doesn't really matter because I didn't attempt to tune it, plus it varies between individual chip, so you just have to try it yourself to find what works for you.

I have the Y540 and it is much cheaper here in Croatia than the Nitro. Same price difference like in Australia. I got a 3 year warranty and I used it twice now to get a new charger... 2 charger replacements in a year. The charger just dies and I suspect it has something to do with the high performance power plan in Windows. But on the up hand I got them by mail in 2 days time from my repair service. First time they got a look and the second time it just took an email to get one. Other than that it is really a mean machine and it performed above my expectations in almost all games except Cyberpunk... But then again, it is Cyberpunk we're talking about. Lenovo Vantage is a fantastic piece of software and I'm honestly surprised you didn't delve deeper into it. Great review brother.
the prices are similar in my country, i thought they are similar in performance due to their hardware being exactly the same, ty so much for the video. now i can say for sure the nitro works better for me since i like the looks of it more too.
damn, I can't choose between these two
18:54 wow! How did you find out about this awesome sale?
Just happened to check the price for the video 😅
I applaud your excellent review of these two machines. they are so close that you couldn't go wrong with either. I chose the Nitro 5 with the RTX 2060 as the cost to me was US $851 making it a deal over the Lenovo.
You have thermal throttling?
@@justrose4905 Not really, but the CPU does run warmer than I would like it to. Intel specs the I5 9300 at 100C and the Nitro runs in the mid 90's. I am using throttle stop at -125 mV to keep it reasonable and running at 88-90C
I really enjoyed it and pls do a comparison of the Lenovo y540 and the acer nitro 7. I highly request u to do it please. And I have already become a fan of yours
Nitro 7 is basically the same as the 5, just with a metal lid and ever so slightly thinner, doubt it's enough to change the conclusion. That said I've been trying to get the 7 from Acer for months but they won't send it to me.
