the Catapult is very effective in the Plains biome actually. Fuling camps are basically the perfect target for our new siege weapon. Enough range that the goblins won't be able to trace the attack back to you, enough damage to basically level their village, and strong enough to cause AOE damage against multiple mobs. I tested it myself and I *erased* two fuling bases easily, as in completely wiped out, not a single structure left standing and all goblins dead. If you're farming for blackmetal/coins or if you simply have a Hateboner for them fulings (like I do), then the Catapult is your best friend.
OR - Start at the top and work your way down. NEVER stand on the block you are hitting with the axe, stand on the block below and beside it. I play by myself and get every single piece of Flametal off of the spire before it sinks, almost every single time. I have a chest off to the side, and run down and unload all the Flametal midway through into the chest, then run back and finish it off. Good idea to have the feather cape (and fire potion) so you don't die when you hit the bottom if you fall off. His method seems unnecessarily dangerous and complicated.
fire potion doesnt protect from lava damage maybe the fireball things but i like never get hit by those to begin with i think. but starting from the top and not standing on the one ur hitting is interesting, thx :)
When you die while it is sinking, it will have reset back up but with the mined flametal missing. It seems to reset when it is unloaded while it sinks. So probably!
I feel like you really don't need to mine them much at all. I made the mace, shield, dual axes and bow from looting the fortresses and am sitting on an extra 200 gathering dust while I'm bottlenecked on gems.
Me and my friend always jump to the top of the Flame metal spire.. and hug the center pillar while mining downwards.. this gets you through most of it easily.. but ofc the bottom row is going to be where you run out of stamina, and start burning in lava.. often times when we both die in the process the spire stops sinking and you can continue where you left off.. if one of us survive the spire finishes its sinking.. :)

Leviathan (and presumably lavaiathan) sinking is not triggered by total damage done, it's a 25% chance per damaging hit to the barnacles (or ore nodes). Since a catapult does a lot more damage per hit, you should be able to get more off with a catapult before it starts sinking.

I don't think that it will reduce the incoming damage by lava that much. Maybe by the random fire bolts that might hit you or by those blobs when they explose might reduce the damage by a factor. I hope at least that my gear doesn't take that much durability loss, even without dying. Currently with Mistland stuff I have to repaire basically after 2 waves of fighting 5-8 mobs as a hit with my sword seems to drain like 2-3 % of durability.
@@Kessra Odd, I didn't have that issue and I fight head on tank. I'd power thru wave after wave Doom Slayer style and my armour and shield will be fine, same with Frostner that I use to kill the Skelebois.

Catapult strat takes too long btw setting it up is difficult, you have to destroy catapult to get back your mats ... you have to fight the mobs.... your catapult can catch on fire if cinders fall on it... Theres just too much negatives off catapult... This strat seems to be best currently if you are trying to beat Ashlands. Offcourse if you are playing with multiple people they all can finish up the node faster.
On the regular Leviathan you can log out All characters to reset the Leviathan from sinking. If this mechanic is the same you should all be able to log out quick and log back in. I have not tried it myself yet, but it recently worked on the leviathan's in the ocean.
The problem with Ashlands is competing priorities between the learning curve, number of enemies, environmental hazards and most importantly skill drain. Combine this with losing your gear constantly and the biome is simply unfun. At it's core, Valheim has been a game of exploration, but that element is missing from this biome because you're spending 95% of your time fighting endless waves of respawning trash mobs.
Mods are here to help with skill lost. As even when you turn it off in settings, there still will be skill drain, incredibly stupid system that should be removed and skill earned should be revised
I remember when I entered plains for the very first time and basically got one-shot by almost anything. Now I run through the plains without really thinking of the "danger" it once had. Experience and gear both contributed to that. Especially at night plenty of mobs will spawn and try to kill you, especially if you build a house on the shore where you landed, as I did. I constantly get attacked by birds, a serpent, various skelettons and Askvins or Morgens from time to time. By the time I kill one usually 3-4 mobs will join the party and it feels like that I'm fighting 15 minutes against half of the area there and the 2 day respawn of mobs seems to be just to fast as by the time I try to explore, I basically had 2-3 other fights till the first mobs respawn. Either reducing the agro distance could help to give us a bit more room to breath or the time of the mob respawn should be increased slightly. How having full endgame gear helps to reduce incoming damage but also increase outgoing damage I'm not sure. Still need to farm flamental ore to upgrade all the gear. Tank armor at least has some resistances against fire on it, which at least might help against blobs but with higher armor also the incoming damage should be reduced by a bit.
Another fun way to build into fortresses: build your stonecutter at the base of the wall, then use the 4×4 Grausen floors to build Mario platforms up the wall. Then you can even move your workbench and stonecutter off the ground as you go up the wall. Only need about 4 platforms
@FireSpark81 I know I recently saw a Video from [Maxxramus] who suggested using catapults (They were using 5) in their video titled - 'Valheim Ashlands - How to farm ALL of the ore nodes off of a Flametal Pillar.' -- Though based on the cost of the catapults and difficulty positioning I'd agree it's silly.
My thing is they are hard to position and get right. The explosive rounds are a bit more expensive than the basult bombs and you are rarely going to actually waste a basult bomb. Almost any platform when messing around on lava is a helpful one.
@@Firespark81 haha so true, I died like 25 times trying to escape the lava due to those homing lava balls, glad to see the shield helps with them, but yeah the basult bombs are far more useful for collecting (If you don't get knocked off XD)
This might work on private games, but I doubt that this will work on dedicated servers. And what do you propose, hitting the ore like 2-3 times and then relog? That doesn't feel fun at all.
You would have died multiple times in your demonstration on how to mine flametal (if not for god mode). It should be blatantly obvious how stupid it is to do it this way. The devs made the ore as slippery as soap for a reason. You're supposed to only use basalt bombs. The better way of doing it though is/was to set up at least 3 catapults firing from different angles. The explosive loads will affect multiple ore chunks. Hitting something as big as house from 5m to 10m is not hard.
God mode doesn't prevent you from taking damage, when you take damage, it causes your HP to be reduced to 1 instead of zero. The reason he didn't take damage is because he did it clean. If everyone who made tutorial videos did so organically in hardline survival playthroughs then all tutorial videos would be a lot worse.
@@ThreadMenace This. Plus, if you (Oliver) were paying attention to the video, he quite literally explains what ThreadMenace just had to explain to you.
No! First off, I would have died once when I slipped and that is 100% a bug. It has to do with the fact that it is an entity and it has been reported. That slipping you seen is the same that that happens when you try to jump onto anything else and it's totally random. As you saw I was able to stand on most of it. Second, as others already mentioned, god mode does not stop you from taking damage. So you can clearly see in the video when I take damage. That is why it is actually great for testing and making videos. There is no hiding when I take damage and I wanted you all to see it. For multiple reasons. Lastly as I show in the video half the time it says too hard when you use the catapult. This is not a situation of where you just need more. Too hard is too hard. Its bugged. Either they want us using them and its bugged or they tried to stop it and it only half worked. I'm waiting on confirmation. But it's the weekend and they don't respond on the weekend.
the random lava attacks that knock you into lava are the most infuriating thing ever... if your going to use dev commands, why not just give yourself everything and then, you win. good job? people miss the entire point of actually PLAYING the game. jeez...
He did not say you should use it on your main character but on an alt to simply get familiar with the mining and bomb throwing on this thing. And I can see how you get more comfortable with a bit more practice over time. The first time I mined I was nervous and hectic and was only able to mine like 35 ore in total. But was also constantly sliding downwards and was stuck in a floating animation even when on the shaking ground. Not to mention that I then ended up corpse running in order to get my items back.

Best way to get flamemetal from pillars, solo. 1. Turn passive monster ON! Build cost OFF! Resources to MAX 2. Find the closest land to a pillar. Clear and flatten a big area. 3. Make 3 catapult and have exploding payloads. 4. Open fire. Keep the 3 firing and adjust aim as the pillar crumbles. If everything goes well, you can destroy almost the entire thing before it sinks. It will have an inner spire that won't crumble. Keep track of which shots are actually doing dmg, especially near the end. A lot of the ore will float in the air, but if you port in and out, they fall. The ore is often in stacks too big to pick up, so you will become encumbered if you click them. It still sucks, you will still die a lot from lava. Have extra Askvinh and saddles.

is the ashland armor heat resistance also a buff for the lava or isnt that working?
@@Jalbesbe Not sure what causes this but I have the feeling that durability goes down significantly in Ashlands. When I hit mobs in i.e. the plains I can hit forever until my weapons wear off but in Ashlands? I literally see the durability go down hit after hit
The heat resistance on the armor increases the time it takes for the lava to do damage to you.
Can you use devcommands to make the pillars not sink when you mine them? I think my friend and I would like that as a server rule in our private game.
Changing the world modifiers to 1.5 resource yield will stop it from sinking
@@richardursin4307 Thank you! I will try this out.
On the regular Leviathan you can log out All characters to reset the Leviathan from sinking. If this mechanic is the same you should all be able to log out quick and log back in. I have not tried it myself yet, but it recently worked on the leviathan's in the ocean.
@@richardursin4307 I tried setting it to 1.5 resource yield on a server, but it did not work for me. They still sink.
How did you destroy that door in the fortress?
he's in creative mode. Normally you have to use a battering ram to break it down.
He used the cheat sword, which deals 10000 damage and breaks rocks, trees, and basically everything else.
If you're going to break in (instead of going over the walls) don't attack the door. The doors have more health than the walls (strangely).
what about the log out trick?
I’d assume it works unless your on a server
It works as long as you're the only one on your server.
I felt bad about playing with build mode on because of how tedious the game gets, but people out here using dev commands
Maxxramus did a video in harvesting the flametel with a bunch of catapults.
I see. No idea who that is lol. But that would explain it. lol
Yup, someone made a video...
So what your saying is that it is "Fortress time"
I got a little over 200 ore in 1 fortress last night
Nice video
its way easier to just farm them, the only thing I found catapults good for is breakin fortress spawners from a far
how would you even see them to know where to aim?
@stiimuli what else did you find them useful for?
@@wutt5176 That has nothing to do with what i asked O_o
@@stiimuli you can try ur luck cuz the spawner must be in 2 of the corners so its a 50/50 you hit it. No other uses
Kind of reminds me of the swamp in that aspect. I'm kind of here for it though. Requires us to prepare and play in a different way.
then dont go down there
Mods are here to help with skill lost.
Just stay in Meadows
I have already harvested flametal before update. What happens to this with the update? the orange ones.
They die out
I mean the ore that spawns, not the one you mined
The old metal is not the same as flamemetal. Its now called ancient metal and has no,use.
Dude.. rly?? Just jump to rocks in lava, father cloak...
Will this game ever be on PS5? That would be my dream.
Dude just log out before it sink, when you enter the game the time were reset
Does that still work? i thought they fixed this.
This might work on private games, but I doubt that this will work on dedicated servers. And what do you propose, hitting the ore like 2-3 times and then relog? That doesn't feel fun at all.
Commentaire pour le ref'
@@ThreadMenace indeed
@@Firespark81anyone who uses dev commands for tutorials is a joke.....stop making videos
the random lava attacks that knock you into lava are the most infuriating thing ever...
if your going to use dev commands, why not just give yourself everything and then, you win. good job?
people miss the entire point of actually PLAYING the game. jeez...
Maybe, but if playing with dev commands is what you find fun, do that? And if you don't, then don't?
He did not say you should use it on your main character but on an alt to simply get familiar with the mining and bomb throwing on this thing. And I can see how you get more comfortable with a bit more practice over time. The first time I mined I was nervous and hectic and was only able to mine like 35 ore in total. But was also constantly sliding downwards and was stuck in a floating animation even when on the shaking ground. Not to mention that I then ended up corpse running in order to get my items back.
wow you're braindead
Dev commands make it infinitely easier to shoot a video like this one.
Firespark brought it up as advice for practicing before going in for real if you wanted to do that.
Last nights update destroyed cheat mode
first comment?
The fortress is not easier. There is no easy way to do this if you don’t cheat in some way. This biome sucks.
imagine not having done your flametal farming pre ashlands
I guess you haven't played. They re-named out flametal to "ancient metal" and made it useless.
@@Cree_Money thats concerning, because i did play and my flametal was still flametal?
Are you sure? i only ask because i know it was still flametal, as i used to to graft the flametal very early on
@@imbadatpickinganame Maybe during the few weeks of testing. It's all obsolete now.
@@Cree_Money i dont have any remaining flametal, its all been used up by me and my friends, but my flametal tools and armor are still there, id have to check with my friends and see if they have any flametal still on them thats been converted into this, ancient metal
It doesn't matter. Using the now obsolete flametal is the same as using dev commands. Plenty of people cheat in Valheim. To each their own.
Just use dev commands to spawn a few flametal pillars so you can practice on them?
I think you've had enough dev commands. You need to have respect for the game and play it without cheating
On a separate character and world, are you oblivious to the fact he is, in fact, *not* cheating? Your attitude to criticism is terrible, might I add. You don't have to attack him in order to make a point. This includes the comment this is replying to *and* another one of your comments on this video.
It's a tutorial bro
They are literally in there for testing, providing feedback, and helping to make the game better. They also allow people like me to teach and help others. That's what I would call respecting the game and others. Think you need to go read up on and understand what respect means. lmao
Also its a game m8 and it's not competitive so who really cares what people do. Grow up.
Best way to get flamemetal from pillars, solo.
1. Turn passive monster ON! Build cost OFF! Resources to MAX
Have extra Askvinh and saddles.
lmfao if you're already cheating, why would you even need to farm flametal in the first place? terrible strat
At that point just enable console commands and spawn it into your inventory. If you're going to cheat, you can do it a lot more efficiently.
Sounds like a lot of BS, I don't think I will be playing this game anymore! It has been going downhill since The Mistlands! RIP Valheim!
why so?
@@PetarJevro I do not feel the need to learn about magic as I like to Tank and spank! Making the game to force you in to being a mage is senseless and useless!
@@unclestevemoves I've played nothing but tank the entire game. Ashlands is rough, not gonna lie, but once I got the new armor and the new cape (don't forget the ashen cape, I did for awhile before I found it. The thing has quadruple armor of most capes) it was a lot easier.
@@unclestevemoves Except for the valkyre I don't think melee has no chance. The most dangerous situation is just when your are clearly outnumbered. I'd say as a melee you don't want to face more than 3 mobs in Ashlands anyway.
Almost all attacks are dodgeable with the proper reaction. Sure, reading the various animations takes a bit of time, especially the delayed attacks, but it is doable. Just have some lingering potions with you to heal up in case of hits and learn when to better run. The respawn of mobs seems to be like 2 days which you could utilize to hide away some workbenches along the way surrounded by ground walls and a stone roof to limit nearby spawns. However, mobs have the tendendy to roam a bit and especially Askvins and Morgens will alter the landscape a bit by trashing trees and stone clutches.
@unclestevemoves nobody is forcing you to play a mage.
