The latest firmware update v.1.13 on December 25 (nice Christmas present) just moved this camera into the upper range of mini cams. The motion detection allows one to power up the camera and forget it, it starts recording when it detects any motion and stops when there is a lack of it. I use the camera for a dash cam, for my bird feeder and it serves as a security camera for my front entrance way. I use an AC adapter with 5v DC output when not using it as a dash cam. Techmoan was right to give this camera such high marks as the manufacturer just keeps making this camera better. Also you now have total control over the Sharpness, Exposure, Contrast, Saturation, Color Temperature and White Balance.
I've been using it as a dash-cam for almost a year now. Not the best audio, but that's not what I need it for. It hasn't given me any problems. I highly recommend it.
No one else offers the kind of information you do ! Thank you so much for being articulate and providing the information on how to use this on a Mac/Apple computer !! You saved the day 👍👍
You can view some of the same footage taken with the 808#26 camera in that camera's review. ua-cam.com/video/d2GfrxJ4rPQ/v-deo.htmlm21s I installed both cameras side by side in the car window to give you the ability to compare the quality between the 808#26 and the Mobius camera. A few lunatics have suggested that the footage is the same - perhaps they should have spent another couple of seconds looking at the different time stamps on the bottom left of the clips.
Techmoan This camera looks great. I am looking for a small spy camera to be place in my garage. i have a motorcycle in there and want to use the camera as surveillance. i have a few questions: 1) What is the external power source. Is it mini usb to usb? 2) Is the recording in continuous loop where i only need to check it if my garage is broken into? Where it keeps recording and when space runs out on the SD card it will record over the clips from the beginning without deleting other clips. In ither words record over each clip starting from the begining without deleting and formatting the whole sd card. 3) Does it have motion detection recording feature? 4) Can i run the camera continuously all day long for days? i wanted to plug the mini usb to a wall charger and record it continuously. Thanks you for all your help... The review was excellent.
This was a video recorded in July 2013, there was only one Mobius available then. After the review was posted the manufacturer sent me the following info… "The manufacturing spec of the lens indicated it has 120 degree FOV (diagonal), but you know a rectangle sensor can never work on a full FOV of the lens. The actual AOV the camera got is smaller. Our results is close to Chucklohr's testing result: horizontal around 90, diagonal around 100, vertical around 50 for 1080p"
This thing is amazing, I received it today and its so tiny and shoots really crisp video. I put velcro on my hat and then this camera and it didn't even feel like I had this thing on, very nice.
CYRRYANC97 I have two already and they work amazing for airsoft, I have one on top of my rifle pointing at me, and I've used the second one pointing forward at 720p 60fps and the shorter field of view makes it perfect for the kill shots on my M4, for the sniper it's not enough though, I use a zoomed handycam for that. Just get a small external battery for games longer than 1 hour though.
So glad I have seen this excellent review, just bought & installed a Mobius for use as a dash cam based on this review and it does not disappoint. Compact, not too obvious, performs well even at night. This is the 3rd dash cam I have had and is the 1st that does what I require. It's also the 1st no to cause appalling radio interference as I use it with the AV input of my LCD head unit.Thank you Techmoan!
Thanks for posting this, that's about the best test that its going to get in the heat. Most people will be using it in much less demanding conditions. I always thought that people were worrying unnecessarily about the heat. If you've ever touched a CPU heat sink you'll know that chips can run at very high temperatures for years without it being an issue.
If anyone is wondering about temperature ranges, I have now had one of these in my car for the past year. I llive in Arizona, USA, and summer daytime temperatures reach 118 degrees, so about 150+ in a parked car. The camera is still working fine, although in Death Valley, CA, they have passed a bylaw against cooking eggs on the sidewalk!
I really appreciate your thorough, in depth reviews. You think of everything one would want to use these cameras for and answer important questions before they're asked. Thank you for all you do.
What a wonderful use of 23'32" watching this! As a person who is not familiar with dash-cams this effort of your has put me in position to know how to do further quick study, what questions to ask, what to do next. Now I have a great foundation! Thank you, sir.
Mine is still working fine. Things like this depend a lot on the climate in which the camera is being used. There are plenty of people who are still very happy with their Mobius cams.
Oh the nostalgia! I had the original 808 and the 808#16 and then a Mobius 1 that I los and two more that I broke. Between 2012 and 2016 I took around 300 GB of videos with these and never left the house without one. But when I broke my last original Mobius in 2016 I bought the Mobius Minni, which was garbage. Then I had the Foxeer 3, which was great, but I lost it after just a few months. And since then haven't had one of these because the camera on my phone got so damn good that I don't really need a dedicated camera anymore and I am now so old that filming in secret with a hidden camera could get me into serious troubles, which is why I decided to not buy one of these anymore.
I agree...Phone Cameras are now taking over even from ordinary point & shoot..but I'll be damned if I go and waste up to $1600 on an IPhone 13 Max Pro.. especially when it's out of date in another 12 months.
Hey Techmoan. As mentioned I recently bought the Mobius camera, and other equipment from JooVuu. I payed 58,00 pound for the camera. I'm very happy about the camera, and there was no problems with the delivery. BUT I have just received an e-mail from them with socalled bargains. Now they claim that the price for the Mobius camera used to be 65 pound, and that you can save 10% if you buy it now for 58,50 pound. The same goes for all their other "bargains". That practice is highly illegal here in Denmark, and I believe that the same law applies in other EU contries as well. I kinda hope they made a mistake, because I intended to buy more stuff from them, but I sure won't deal with any cowboybusiness, if that turns out to be the case. I see you have removed the link to them from your webpage, where I found it. Is this a company one has to be aware of? Best wishes. Soundrookie.
I just demonstrate the products, the decisions are down to you. I use a Mini 0801 in my car, but I'd also be just as happy using a Mobius. If you want a screen though.....
If the 720p only uses the center of the sensor and will do 60fps, then that means 1080p should also be able to do 60fps with the whole sensor. Why is 1080p/60fps not programmed in to be allowed? The whole point of only 720p being able to do the higher framerate is because the whole sensor can capture more light and when downgraded to 720 it looks good/equally as bright. If it's not doing that, then there's no point. Great review though. thanks.
look at the part where he has options to change settings on the computer, there is an option there for 30 or 60 frames. by default 1080p will be in 30 frames to not take up so much space on the memory card.
It's also probable that when the camera was first manufactured they were unsure that the processor could sustain handling 60fps they may have had memory problems with it so didn't want it on by default. Or maybe Speed Class 4 (the most common type) microSD might not be always fast enough to sustain 1080p transfer.
Update: I am so happy with my Mobius I have now ordered another 2 one for the wife's car and the other to go into the back of mine. I am so happy with it I told my family about it and this has lead to my brother in law buying one to also use as a dashcam. As he was so impressed with mine. Thanks again.
I didn't check out the other video links because thought it was incredible just on the you tube. Both the content and presentation style makes this one of the best product reviews I have seen, thank you.
Mobius is very popular as a dashcam. SJ1000 is not ... at least judging by the Forums at dashcamtalk, where the SJ1000 attracts no discussion. Mobius is the automatic choice of RC Aircraft fans, so doubtless a good choice for RC Car fans too. There's currently no waterproof case available for Mobius, so SJ1000 may be a better choice for use on a bike ... unless you avoid rain.
Please, please add a notification in your video that there are fake/clones on the market and there's a reason people should follow the links provided in the description to buy the original camera. I have just been screwed with a fake one and I think people should be aware to avoid those fakes.
+newacreproductions The easiest way is to be careful on the description they use in ebay. If you see the title include something like: ".....FOR mobius...." avoid the seller.
You can press the M button to write protect the file the camera is currently recording. I have not tested this myself as I have just ordered one. Steve
i would add a label to the USB cable saying "Remove after Accident" in red color, so you just yank the power cable out and it stops, or you could also hardwire it to the ignition, surely after accident someone would turn off the car engine, hence saving the file, only thing you need to make sure of is to tell someone to unplug it and give it to you, because it will start recording again after engine on some kind of cloud functionality would be awesome
I'd at least get an 808#16 - but bear in mind you'll need to refocus it's lens by opening it up, picking off the glue and then attaching it to a PC to use as a webcam so you can see if you've twisted the lens in the right direction. You may pay more, but you'll save some time and effort by using a Mobius - It all really depends on how much your time is worth to you though.
Pretty impressive. Looks like a mcdonald's toy. Scary good performance at dirt cheap prices. Could buy 6 or 8 of these and turn my car into a google streetview car. So cheap I don't know why the police don't have one pointing in every direction from a housing on top of their cars.
I'm always upgrading - I think this was filmed with a Sony HX100V or the HX300V - yes I use a tripod (essential for work like this) and very strong lights over a photography table.
I would recommend exactly WIDE-ANGLE version of Mobius (this one - www.banggood.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-HD-Mini-Sports-Camera-Wide-Angle-Edition-p-917817.html?p=4H1016066273201207NC ), less chances that you miss smth interesting while recording etc.
I am amazed at how good this camera is! The only thing that I think would improve it would be to have a recess at the SD card slot, because the eject spring is stiff, and having to use the edge of your fingernail means that there is a danger of the card flying a good distance if your nail slips. A recess would allow you to use the nail ACROSS the slot and not PARALLEL to it. I spent over half-an-hour looking for a card that slipped, and found about 12 feet away behind the radiator. I don't consider it to be a fault; if you've got good eyesight and no radiators, then ignore me.
My best friend is about to pass his driving test so as a treat and because he's failed 2 times, I'm totally buying one of these for him. Very good review, told me everything I need to know! :D
Eletoponline (the link I use) is the manufacturer's own ebay store. They are usually despatched the same day from China and you'll see that most buyers in the US and UK receive theirs in under 10 days.
Yet another excellent review and what we all have come to expect from you. Very much appreciated, I must say. As for the camera? Well I have my new one in my hot little hands and I am completely blown away with it. A grey day here in Hobart, Tasmania and yet even inside the camera performs brilliantly. Outside the image was prefect; sharp, colourful despite the overcast and all I could have wished for. The perfect NoPro camera! And I got it for a pittance in comparison to that "other one". I'm really looking forward to using this on my rc FPV model plane. Thank you!
I edit all my videos in iMovie and this is one of it's built-in transitions. It's a shame I don't have a reason to use it more often because it does look really good. Its also possible to choose from a few different types of globe too.
Testing this thing now for a while and I am very happy with it. Even bought a second cam, one stays in the car and one goes on the motorbike helmet. Fine thing, no problems til now.
There are way too many variable to consider to be able to answer this question. Time of day, distance, traffic coming towards you or driving away, sun behind you, or in front, speed of traffic, type of reg (country/font)....etc etc. Best look at some of the clips i've uploaded and make an informed decision from that.
I've been watching all your videos for quite some time and even when you review a product I'm not interested in, I still watch the video - simply because you make anything sound interesting! And I think it's despicable for someone else to steal your videos!!!
This Video helped me first of all to find the right cam I needed and second to help me understand the full use, software and hardware of this great cam! 1000 Thumbs up and big thanks Techmoan for this outstanding video!!!
Great video! I've had my Mobius cam for about 2 years now and am satisfied with the fpv performance and inbuild DVR capability for my quadcopter - no additional camera required! Also I was surprised to see from this video that I can watch back recorded video (see 22:27). Amazing functionality as it also doubles as a dash cam with inverted image. Also these cams have had continued firmware and pc interface up dates which have been easy to install and have provided expanded functionality. Great video and product.
Bought recently and I'm very pleased. Crystal clear images. Dead easy to operate and alter settings. Great to have well worded instructions, too. Thanks for the review or I'd never have considered this as a car cam.
FOV in 720p30 Mode is not as narrow as it is in 720p60 - but I'll admit I haven't used it for more than a few seconds because I prefer to shoot in 1080p30 if the option is there.
Acting on the feedback from this video, I bought one of these and have installed it in my car. It works exactly as advertized and does just what I wanted! Thank you! There is one thing I would change on it, and that is the LED sequence! Please have it steady on when recording and flashing when in standby!!! A flashing red light in the peripheral vision is not good, especially when driving, its a major distraction! A steady light you can attune to and ignore! Thanks for the review and tip!
I have been using this 1080P camera in my car for three weeks and it works better than I was expecting it would. Takes great video day or night. Easy to transfer to my other car. Simple to program and easy to use. The only problem and it is not a problem with the camera is I don't have a switched 12 volt socket, so I forget to plug it in or unplug it sometimes. One day I took out the little card and lost it down between the seats and liked to never find it. But the camera is a winner for sure.
Those buildings are gorgeous. That's what I love about cities with a long history and lots of culture behind it. But a very comprehensive and thorough review and looks like a real quality device for the price. It's very rare that a compact device can be made so well and so much flexibility in mind. :)
Thanks for the Mobius review, it is absolutely brilliant. I have purchased one and am very happy with it. I just thought I would share that it is very easy to de solder the internal mic then solder it to a length of wire to create an external mic. I have done mine and it now sits inside my helmet and provides excellent video commentary. Thanks again
I just got two of these cameras, pretty impressed with the footage and the sound. To make it rainproof I have used an empty Rema Tip Top TT 02 Touring puncture repair kit box!
It records and charges at the same time - that's how these cams work in a car...the car 12V power plug turns the camera on when electricity is supplied.
I've reviewed enough poor quality merchandise, I'm trying to be a bit more discerning and find things that I'm happy to recommend to people, they may cost a few £s more, but at least you won't regret the purchase. I'd ignore any specs you see for something this cheap - they'll just be typos and copy and paste general camera specs. You can't use IR leds to shine through a window, so discount that feature.
Brilliant way to present recording over old footage with the toy cars. Great detail on the product and I think I'll follow your lead. Thanks for sharing.
Will say one thing about your videos. They have made me want to come up and visit Manchester, looks like some nice places up there. Thanks for the great videos.
I made my decision to purchase this as a dash cam based on your review. I am very pleased with this camera thus far.. It works great as a dash cam and the video quality is excellent... Great review. Everything you mentioned was true and accurate,...
I get a question like this every few weeks. It always turns out to be a PC problem that can be resolved by updating your codecs with the k-lite codec pack.
Ok, great, thank you. I took a chance and ordered from this other seller on Ebay that I mentioned because he was local to the US. After I ordered, I was afraid the seller I ordered from might be selling a knock off but I got the camera now and it does appear to be the exact same one. I ordered the camera with the DVR Kit on a Friday and got it the next Wednesday so less than a week. I haven't used it a whole lot yet but so far I'm pleased with it. Thanks again for the great reviews.
Great review. Have been looking for a car camera and this tiny thing ticks all the boxes - you sold me on it with the review. Ordered one from Webbex in the UK today. Many thanks.
Owning 6 of these cams for the vehicles in our family, I can no longer recommend them for a dash cam and will be retiring all of them soon. The main issue I have is that the camera gives you a false sense of security. Three times I've discovered that a camera was not recording despite the recording indicator blinking normally saying all was fine. The last time I discovered this problem was following an accident where I needed the video to show the other driver was at fault, and unfortunately, there was no video on the SD card. Also, night time video quality is no longer competitive with other newer cams. Another problem I've had is with several of the LiPo batteries going completely dead from the high heat weather where I live. Given the lesson I've learned from my accident, I would never buy a dash cam that does not have a display, or WiF to send video to my cell phone, so I can easily test on a frequent basis that the camera is indeed saving the video files. This camera is okay for daytime use to put on something like a remote control airplane, or to record a hidden video, because it is very compact. However, the lack of notification of a failure to the SD card makes this an unacceptable option for a dash cam where failure can result in a lost of thousands of dollars.
I stopped using my GoPros for the same reason. Great when they worked, but would just stop recording due to "overheating" message. I'll be getting a Blackbird dedicated dashcam.
I love the heat sink idea! What a great idea! I've never seen anything with a heat sink outside the case. I wish my iphone got that for when it gets really hot using both GPS and Bluetooth music in the car.
Looped/recycled video is the most awesome thing ever. I love being able to just keep shooting until something good happens rather than having to delete clips over and over so it doesn't run out of space.
Excellent Review. I was debating between the Mobius & the Polaroid Cube. I decided to go with the Mobius based on your comments. I primarily will use it as a "dash cam" for my Yamaha Touring motorcycle. I like the loop feature & the auto shutoff. Thanks again!
I bought this camera based on your review. I have to say, that the camera is excellent, and though I use it mainly as a dash cam, It is the best footage I've seen both in sunlight and at especially at night. For the price I think you can't buy a better camera. I like the fact that it is so small it is virtually hidden when in use. I do recommend getting the one with the latest C lens. 5 stars to the guys at Mobius for a brilliant piece of kit and thanks to you for the great reviews on this and the other tech. PS I also bought the Sony HDR-AS100V thanks to your reviews... Also another great action camera.
One of the better video reviews on UA-cam. Nice and informative and to the point.
wow this looks pretty kool
that and a company taking feed back is utterly amazing

Overheating issues? mem card corrupt issues?
You know this is one of the best reviews I have seen though it was long not boring a lot of information and definitely convinced me to get mine
The Mobius is the one you need - it has the best quality and also the lens can be easily refocussed - essential for your close-up work.
Action cameras now are way more advanced with modular designs like DJI action 2.
No one else offers the kind of information you do !

Been using this little gem for over a year now on my rc aircraft, faultless performance.
I really appreciate your thorough, in depth reviews. You think of everything one would want to use these cameras for and answer important questions before they're asked. Thank you for all you do.
DJI does it better with tiny cameras. I got the action 2 and I was given a free protective case.

Dang, didn't know this was illegal there.
This crap is completely legit in the US and it gets old pretty quickly
I'm following the appropriate procedures though youtube now...so hopefully this issue will be resolved. Thanks for the positive words.
Your review reminds me of James May a bit.

which one is better now at your opinion? this one here or the SJ100? I want to use it for dashboard, rc car and bike.
One of the best (if not the best) reviews I've ever seen of this camera. Thank you!
Please, please add a notification in your video that there are fake/clones on the market and there's a reason people should follow the links provided in the description to buy the original camera. I have just been screwed with a fake one and I think people should be aware to avoid those fakes.
+octap79 But how do know when you have a fake clone? What is the difference? What did you notice?
+newacreproductions The easiest way is to be careful on the description they use in ebay. If you see the title include something like: ".....FOR mobius...." avoid the seller.
+octap79 You can also check this photo I just made oi67.tinypic.com/am9t0y.jpg
+octap79 If someone receive a fake/inferior "mobius" he will surely notice that the quality of the video is ....rubbish
One of the BEST review videos I've ever seen for ANY product! Bravo! Keep up the great work! THANK you for doing such a great job!
If I used this as a dashcam, how would I make it save an event and still keep looping?
for sure. you can see in the app settings
You can press the M button to write protect the file the camera is currently recording. I have not tested this myself as I have just ordered one. Steve
i would add a label to the USB cable saying "Remove after Accident" in red color, so you just yank the power cable out and it stops,
or you could also hardwire it to the ignition, surely after accident someone would turn off the car engine, hence saving the file, only thing you need to make sure of is to tell someone to unplug it and give it to you, because it will start recording again after engine on
some kind of cloud functionality would be awesome
No wonder the manufactures of the product contacted you, this is a great review, and has made me decide to get one of these fantastic little cameras.
Hiya Techmoan! What kind of micro sd do i need for this cam? If i like to buy 16g or 32g? Thanks!...mon
Monching Timbang Up to 32GB - use a class 6 or 10 MicroSD
Techmoan thanks!
I can’t get iMovie to recognize the footage. I also can’t get the video to transfer to my iPhone doesn’t see it.
Testing this thing now for a while and I am very happy with it. Even bought a second cam, one stays in the car and one goes on the motorbike helmet. Fine thing, no problems til now.
Best reviews of all.Clearly spoken and well explained.Thanks.
It will if you want, you'll have to set it to Loop using the setup software.
Fantastic review and finally a camera we can afford that actually does the job. Top notch! Thank you!
Yes it does (if you set this in the menus) - you can see all the options, in the video when I show the GUI software.
You are one of the best car camera review guys on youtube! Thanks!
Purchased this camera as a dash cam based on this review. I couldn't be happier with the purchase, and thank you Techmoan for the in-depth review.
What up/down buttons? If you mean the silver things, thats the heat sink. You might want to watch the video.
just bought one on your recommendation - really impressed - came with no manual but using you as my teacher Thanks
Those buildings are gorgeous. That's what I love about cities with a long history and lots of culture behind it. But a very comprehensive and thorough review and looks like a real quality device for the price. It's very rare that a compact device can be made so well and so much flexibility in mind. :)
Excellent review. Amazing little camera for the price. Very feature packed and versatile.
After seeing your review, I decided to buy this camera for the purpose of a dash-cam.
Thanks for another great vid!!
The chap I link to is shopfront for the manufacturer. They'll sell wholesale to resellers too.
Just got this camera. I use it in 720p mode to shoot low level shots of my model Railway layout. Works a treat!!!! Great little camera!
I think this is the best review of anything i have seen in youtube, Thanks very much
It records and charges at the same time - that's how these cams work in a car...the car 12V power plug turns the camera on when electricity is supplied.
Yes - Formatting completely clears everything off the SD card.
I just love this camera, picked one up recently and it's amazing. Thanks for the great review Techmoan, watched this review before I bought it.
I get a question like this every few weeks. It always turns out to be a PC problem that can be resolved by updating your codecs with the k-lite codec pack.
It should be if you've got a 12V to USB car power adaptor and a way of mounting a tripod screw hole mount to your windscreen.
Ive been using the Mobius for 10 years as a dash cam and its flawless..
Excellent review as always. I use this as a dashcam and it has been reliable for years.
Great reviews! Detailed, clear and easy to follow, with the added bonus that you sound a bit like James May.
You need to configure the settings to make it auto start.
Thank you Techmoan!
Your reviews are really good. Companies should pay you to review their products.
I love the heat sink idea! What a great idea! I've never seen anything with a heat sink outside the case. I wish my iphone got that for when it gets really hot using both GPS and Bluetooth music in the car.
+1 for the Mobius. Fully installed in to my car, works perfectly. Thanks for the review.
Looped/recycled video is the most awesome thing ever. I love being able to just keep shooting until something good happens rather than having to delete clips over and over so it doesn't run out of space.
I'd have to say that was the best review of anything I've ever watched here! Thanx for helping make my decision - subscribed.
I am impressed with this camera so far, thinking of getting one. Thanks for the great review!
Wow what a nice lil camera.
The pictures are so clear. Nice review btw, and *subbed!*
Ensure card is formatted as FAT, is a Class 4 or above and try a different card.
Excellent Review. I was debating between the Mobius & the Polaroid Cube. I decided to go with the Mobius based on your comments. I primarily will use it as a "dash cam" for my Yamaha Touring motorcycle. I like the loop feature & the auto shutoff. Thanks again!
Thanks for the in-depth review, I think I'll have to get one now!
