I also had the question about direct sunlight and the plastic camera. Besides the tape giving up and letting loose, will the camera like other items in the car melt and turn into a useless deformed piece of plastic, when its 90 F outside with car temps topping 120 F?
This is a really good point and one which I did not think much about. Up here in Canada things melting on the dash of your car is not something that happens often, water bottles freezing and bursting or door seals freezing closed are more the things we worry about.
Gary Korzelius my apologies for late reply. To kinda pre sum up.my story, you should be fine. As for the story, my brother has a sj4000 that he used to strap to a drone before he got his DJI, that drone one day went rogue and started cruising away. It dropped and we couldn't find but ended up finding 7 months later as someone posted a ad on letgo saying they found a camera with footage and will give to owner. We got back and it was fine. Those 7 months were through winter and summer with temps ranging from -30c to +33c. The camera is fine to this day so in summary, I wouldn't worry.
your can hit much higher temperatures in direct light in a car than being outside if its 90 outside and sunny you can reach 172 inside add the sun directly on it and yes it can warp. Getting a windsheild sun shade will help i take mine out just have it suction cupped behind mirror
I have sj7 cam..what will be the effect of heat? Here in australia it gets hot sometimes. Can i use it without battery as i will be using it via usb charging..please suggest.
I think my Hero Battery is not holding the charge as well as it used to. Have done a review for batteries for this? If so could you include a link in your response.
Which camera to have? Is it the GoPro HERO, the one in the grey waterproof cases? If it is I have not seen much in the way of replacement options. You can find a list of all the batteries I have tested here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q08C3SxoYKdUIW38vrr2GTHNNOi427S4dRGKCfUkF0s
Thanks for sharing your review but I have a couple of BIG concerns, one being I would like to hear how this works during the summer when the temps get up into the 90's (if the camera overheats and shuts down) and the other if the double back tape gets hot and won't hold the camera to your mirror any longer. I tried recording with my GoPro while driving here in Central Florida and it shut down within 30 min and it was so hot I couldn't even hold onto it. If I mounted it outside it was OK though. I'm sort of skeptical about any dash cam holding up in high temp with a vehicle sitting out in the sun.
Going through the specs it says 5v 1 amp power supply, but you have mentioned it will work in the car 12-volt socket? Will it still work or heat up and burn?
did you facing heat issue when your sj5000x recording as dash cam? i use cheap sjcam car charger for my power supply. it always getting heat after couple minutes recording. One of my sjcam battery already puffed
It is a good point, I don’t think I would be buying an SJ5000 just to use as an dash camera. But if you have one around and want to see if have any use for an dash cam this is a way to get one for free
As you do not have the ability to set the default mode of this camera it will alway boot in video mode. Because of this I think are stuck with just video mode when you are using dash cam mode
The real question is if I can make my own micro usb cable which will have only + and - connected to car´s circuit with 12V or the camera is powered by less voltage or something so I would destroy it connecting it straight to 12V . thanks
You could use your smart phone as a front dash cam and another for the back. Then just delete what footage you don’t need when stopped to get out of your car.
The other thing is that unlike a action camera where you will be going through all the footage you shoot. With a dash camera and loop recording you will never look at any of the footage till you have a need to look back at something that happened.
the resemblance is uncanny, Great perfomance in the way of water Sam. Can't wait to see part 3! lol.
I found this video really helpful. I have SJ5000X, would you recommend to remove the battery when using it as dashcam?
That would be a good idea, if it will run without the battery.
No. It needs the battery to save the video after the car is turned off, otherwise the video will be corrupted

Can this be used as a cctv 24 hours recording? I have the 5000.
Where did u get the mount that you used to attache to the rearview mirrror?
Do you leave the battery in it when using it in dashcam mode?
Where can I buy that bracket that you cut in the video?
Brother ......i want to shoot car driving video using "cap mount" which is best for it?sj 4 , or sj5
Can you mount it to passenger head rest. To capture speedometer as well all on one frame ever try this???
That would likely severely limit the view outside.
Mine's been in my car for almost 3 years now. No issues whatsover. I don't even use a high endurance sd card just a regular class 10 sandisk.
Would any 12v USB adapter work for my sj4000 ?
Bro how's the night vision because dashcams do have. Night visit n lenses
Awesome vid. Where can i find a case like that to install on the back of my rearview mirror?

Great video Kyle, I’d never have thought of using one of these cameras as a dash cam 👍🏽

Can’t say high temps are something I think about much, here in Canada a the hottest day we get will be in the high 70’s. It is a very valid point
No problems at all after 4 years with sj4000. I just need to change my battery because old one was a little bigger when compare to the new.

Great video Kyle, thanks.
@4:51 nice place. Which city is it?
What is the longest duration possible in loop mode?
thanks bro! had this camera just collecting dust. found a new use for it
Trouble is I want to watch people trying to break into my car? I need to have it running? Could I also use this for home security? Great video 😊
Is this camera good in night?
nope
Hi Kyle , Is the dash-cam footage from Cualicum Beach ?
You can buy a blackvue 2 camera setup with gps and parking detection for like $250..
One camera in the front and one in the back.

Can the dash cam setting working on timelapse photo?

On CamPark cameras the equivalent is "Driving Mode"
Good idea and its implementation.👍
I was using my SJ4000 as a dash cam for months until it got really cold and killed my battery.
This guy looks like Chris Pratt!
Do you mean Sam Worthington?
How can i quick save video to not recording over if i have accidents ? Any button ?
on dashcamtalk.com/forum you can get all infos and user experiences also by people using action camera as dashcameras
hello can i disable the loop or turn it OFF
The real question is if I can make my own micro usb cable which will have only + and - connected to car´s circuit with 12V or the camera is powered by less voltage or something so I would destroy it connecting it straight to 12V . thanks
Standard USB uses 5V, small USB power converters are readily available though.
Estás wueon que voy a desarmar el auto para instalar la cámara !
OMG you're an avatar of the Avatar! :O
I love this camera when Was New now the battery las 5 min and dies
Wow, the new one is like 5$ cost..
Is this really DIY?

GoPro has voice command to turn on and off saving you filming all that dead time sitting at Starbucks
C P filming is still actually needed when you are parking it on the street lol
The other thing is that unlike a action camera where you will be going through all the footage you shoot. With a dash camera and loop recording you will never look at any of the footage till you have a need to look back at something that happened.
Thanks for the video. Great idea.
And just ignore the stupid f@ckers in the comments section :)
Look at those sjcam logo and remove letter “j” and see it again! That’s how I feel about these product.
HAHA
And yet they're considerably cheaper, and people are generally happy with them.
SJ is not GoPro!
Stupid way to mount the cam
