  • Model GC6aa-8 Water heater worked great on electric but would not stay lit on propane. Would light when pilot button pushed, but always went out immediately when released. Needed the Gas Control Valve replaced. Couldn't find any video's showing how to do it, and couldn't afford to pay for the repair so I made this video showing the repair. If it helps anybody then I'm happy and your welcome.
    Edit: I realized that the last part of the video was not included with this, so I have the full video uploaded in addition to this one, they are the same however the other has about 2 minutes more at the end that somehow didn't get included here. Sorry. Here is the link:

    Thanks Frank for the video, I live in my RV six months a year, lucky I can plug in and dump waste next to my daughter’s house but I can’t make hot water with a broken water heater ,I boil water and mix it in the sink or just go full commando and wash up with cold, no good, my set up is just like yours but from 83’, I’m gonna soak that main joint with some penetrating oil and have a torch ready,thanks again for a well done no BS video,well done sir!

      I pray you can find the gas valve, it's been discontinued for a couple years now. Best bet is taking old valve to RV service shop and seeing if they can match it up with a new one.

    Just found this video when looking for gas valve replacement. I agree with others that it is full of useful information and advice from someone who just needs to get the job done. Thanks very much for passing along the advice and posting the video. Like others I was a bit saddened to learn at the end of your circumstances, but from reading your responses in the thread it sounds like things are going much better for you now and I'm thankful for that, and thankful for you, too. Keep being awesome. The world is a better place with you in it brother.

    Frank, Thanks for this video.
    I tried many things to loosen the valve from the camper including a heat gun. (At the end of this video Frank says he used a torch to loosen the pipe.) Spent over an hour and finally used a longer pipe clamp, which gave me better leverage. (That sucker was on very tight!)
    If I can I will post a photo. BTW because the control valve is inside the box it was very difficult to get any leverage with normal tools - pliers, wrenches, etc.

    • @hgffrank

      Your welcome.... I wish I would have shown the part where I used a torch to heat the parts up. I actually applied the heat to the water heater tank right where the pipe goes in. The idea is that you want to expand metal to loosen the part, so you really don't want to heat the pipe itself. Doing so is actually counter-productive and could result in the pipe breaking off due to weakening from the heat. But one must be very careful due to the insulation on the tank that you don't want to catch fire or otherwise be damaged. Keeping a fire extinguisher near would be a good idea. There were a few things I would have done different in the video but hindsight is always 20/20. My frame of mind at the time wasn't optimal so I apologize for not being more in-depth.

    Great video. Gave me the confidence to try to do it myself and avoid the $$$$$ fees of an RV repair guy. Extremely clear and followed from start to finish without issue.
    One comment though is I have a 10 gallon tank, the installation is exactly the same however the unit is rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise so the pilot gas supply line and thermal couple will be positioned on the right hand side rather than bottom.

    My pilot light stays on and Im getting gas to ignite fire but it wont stay on very long. I have a 1995 Jayco Camper with Attwood Control Valve. I have plenty of propane. Ive noticed that the stem behind the valve that turns the gas on becomes real sloppy after it first lights and then becomes ineffective until the valve cools completely down. @hgffrank  7 років тому +2

      Wayne Mendenhall thanks for the tip. I'm not an expert, just a diesel mechanic. I did at least use a good high quality Teflon tape, much better than the normal stuff. It's never failed me. In the future I'll keep your tip in mind and get the right stuff. Thanks again. I actually asked a propane company in town if they could change the valve for me but they refused because I had the camper setup to run on a 100 lb tank. So I asked them if there was anything special I needed or needed to know to do it myself and they refused to tell me anything due to claimed liability. Yet they didn't see a problem crimping a connector on a hose when I connected that 100 lb tank....smh

    Thanks Frank, great vid, I am having trouble accessing one at the moment and was wondering about the two wires in the back, they go to a non replaceable cutout. Now I know you should never mess about with gas controllers, and bypassing safety items is perhaps a no-no BUT if I bypass this it will work fine, and I think it is just for overheat? These are available for later models as a separate piece and replaceable.
    Any big problem putting one of the replaceable ones inline and putting it back?

      Yes it is, and I don't really know what to tell people. I tried finding a suitable replacement but I was unable. Best advice I have would be to get in touch with rv repair centers near you and give them your water heater model number. I spoke briefly with the repair center here and short answer was that they would rather sell an entirely new water heater than provide parts for an old unit that could become a liability for them. Yes, I know it's stupid, but all a person would have to do is say they were told it would fix the problem and the service center would share liability.

    My unit is doing the same thing but the gas control valve is newer, just like the model you installed. I find it hard to believe I need to replace it again. Any other ideas why the pilot light won’t stay lit and fire the unit up?

      Thermocouple may be faulty. Very cheap, when in doubt replace it. I got mine from an HVAC wholesale supply house for a few bucks. The branded ones are a lot more. All that matters is the length.

    Hey Frank. Was reaching out for any tips. I replaced the thermo couple and the control valve. The pilot still goes out. If you have any suggestions Lmk. Thanks again for your video. I followed it and it was very helpful. Wondering if I’m missing something so simple or something.

    • @hgffrank
      @hgffrank  Рік тому

      With a new valve, good gas supply pressure and new thermocouple the most obvious to me would be TC positioning. The tip should be directly in flame. Is it possible you over tightened the TC. Just barely Finger tight is tight enough. More than the and TC is damaged.

    • @alexisarchibald
      @alexisarchibald Рік тому

      @@hgffrank I will check these suggestions in the daylight. Thank you! I did not tighten TC that much, but wondering if it could be damaged or faulty even though it’s new? I was thinking to get a multimeter to test. This is frustrating so I appreciate you responding.

      Thermocouple. It lets the control unit know if there is a flame or not. If the flame blows out the thermocouple tells the control module and gas is shut off...safety...

      Very sorry to hear that. It sounds like you have one that's possibly not going to come out. Maybe somebody used lock-tite while putting it in. That's assuming its already been replaced of course. Sounds counter-intuitive, but did you try tightening it a bit first and then loosen. Sometimes that's what it takes to break the bond. I honestly don't have a good solution for you because heating the pipe too much could catch fire to the insulating foam around the tank...one less than ideal possibility would be to remove the water heater completely, neatly cut away the foam insulation, then heat the living hell out of that tank where the pipe threads in, and try again. at least then you could epoxy or tape the insulation back on the tank when done. Sorry I'm not much help to you. I'd try helping you out in person, but not likely your anywhere near Carlsbad, NM...good luck Brian...

    That's not a drain plug , it's a place for the electric heating heating element . You can add that easily and Amazon sellez the kit for 126 for the 6 gal and 143 for the 10 gal . Heats quicker to have both and pretty much gives you 15 gals before getting cold

      The thermal cut off I purchased at a local hvac wholesale store because the RV shop wanted 10x the price. Those thermocouples only cost a few dollars, $10 at most. There is nothing special about them, just get one that's long enough. May want to check local home improvement stores. Just ask where the thermocouples are and make sure it's long enough. I'm not sure but I think they all have the same thread connection

    It looks like you didn't take the plastic protective sleeve off the end of the gas valve probe that goes in the water heater so if you have a plastic smell or it's not adjusting properly it's most likely because of the protection sleeve the probe.

    • @hgffrank
      @hgffrank  8 місяців тому

      It doesn't matter, because as far as I know it's been discontinued. Now they expect everyone to buy a complete new water heater. Best bet may be finding old campers and getting one used.
      If I had to do it again, I would take old one to RV service shop and see if they can match it up with a new one. As long as the thread is the same or adaptable, and the btu ratings are reasonably close, you should be fine.
