I just bought a house this past July. The water heater was installed in 6/2020, three days ago the water heater shutoff, I spoke on the phone with a technical support and according to they diagnosis it was the Gas control valve. They sent me a replacement and to choose a technician of my choice because they weren't able to find one in my area. Today I got the part but I'm eager to this job myself from watching this video in which by the way was helpful and to learn and since I'm a new homeowner why not learn some new skills.
12/03/2021 New updates: so I got the gas control valve replaced and the issue still persists. I had a friend of a friend an experience plumber take a look and he was not able to determine the problem ( I told my friend your, friend couldn’t even tell what the problems is ) so that left me to figure it out on my own. So long story short I called Rheem and lie about it told them the part they sent me didn’t fix the problem, my next guess was to get the pilot assembly kit replaced, They sent me the part and by the way they overnighted.
12/04/2021 follow up updates: Got the part today, put it in and voila worked immediately.

I love these how-to videos. Unfortunately for these plumbers it's arming the homeowner with knowledge with step by step instructions on how to make repairs and fixes that they would never attempt, saving themselves $100's and even $1000's in the process. With some exceptions the internet has removed the curtain on how to properly and safely take on projects that were otherwise handled by a qualified and licensed professional. So for those with a little bit of skill and the courage to give it a go it's great that these videos are out there and easily accessible.

Complaining about home owner repairs. I replaced my gas valve on both my water heater, and furnace. Crazy tech wanted over 100 dollars to check my furnace once. It was spider webs in the gas valve. I have that exact valve. It just broke again, but I fixed it. The pilot wouldn't stay lit so I replaced the thermocouple. Same issue. Removed that wire thing where the thermocouple goes into the valve. Boom hot water until I replace that faulty valve again this week.

We have the same heater installed about the same time, by a local HVAC company. Same sort of install, flex lines and all. The output line has been replaced twice because of leaks. We've had two 2020 Rheem water heater gas control valves go bad. The repairman said he's replaced 20 of these in the last month. Why the hell doesn't Rheem send out more "good" valves. They know it's an issue. Furthermore, our new tenant moved in 12-13, only to have it go out 10 days later...just before Christmas. What the fluck???

One thing that I would have liked to see in this replacement is some discussion and comparison of the new and old gas valves side by side before taking them away from the camera. My "under warranty" replacement gas valve for my June 2020 installed Rheem hot water tank arrived today. There is a heavy clear plastic sheath covering the double probe that goes into the tank. The valve didn't arrive with any instructions. The new thermocouple arrived with instructions but not the new gas valve. Does that plastic sheath stay on the probe or does it come off? I don't want the 125 degree F water heating the plastic and having it fall off inside the tank if it's supposed to be removed before the installation. Any information would be appreciated.

Our "Rheem" 40 gallon water heater is just like this one except it set up for propane. It's only 2 years old and the pilot light started to go out. I followed instructions in disassembly and the cheap aluminum line that goes from control box to the pilot inside the water heater , broke inside the box as if it were glued asides being tightend by the nut that holds it in place in the control box.
I heard you mention something about recall , did l hear you right ? I'll look it up.
So far all the videos l have seen are great and informative. The fittings and connectors all come apart as they were designed. I have no idea as to why my tube snapped (other than cheap, cheap aluminum material). Anyways thanks for video and if you know about recall let us know, these water heaters are up there in price. U are right they said on the phone there is a recall on that part, probably a fault solenoid inside? I first replace the thermocouple before calling Rheem. What a horrible install of the gas lines that homeowner did! I installed my own and used all the same gas piping, the only piece I had to replace was to put a new 3" black pipe that comes out the valve, I used yellow Teflon tape I was suprised to see the pre-taped part u installed didn't have yellow tape on it? I did use flex pipe for the water in & out since the new water heater has threads.

EXACTLY !!!!!! I do electronic repairs & troubleshooted my own Rheem water heater that failed after only 2 months ! I ended up pulling out the 10 cent thermal switch / fail safe connector & as I pulled it out the wires ripped out of the end. So I just put 1 wire in the hole & the tip of the thermocouple in further so as touching the wire end & the base of the valve. The other wire I wrapped around the thermocouple just below the nut & taped it in place. I had to move the tip of the thermocouple around several times & try the pilot till it was just right & then my pilot stayed on & I carefully tightened the nut some. Still working after several months - no parts replaced.

Oh. I should mention what I've discovered on why these valves have been failing, There is a sensor/circuit breaker that has 2 wires going to it that is between the thermocouple and the body of the gas valve. The sensor is failing and shorting out so the thermocouple won't make contact. When the thermocouple is shorted, the gas valve won't open when you release the "pilot" button. If you remove this sensor and the thermocouple makes contact inside the body of the gas valve, if you can then light the pilot light and it stays on, you have confirmed that the sensor is bad. I've tried to find out what that sensor is supposed to protect and apparently it's an anti-scalding feature if the thermostat fails to prevent the tank from overheating. A sensor can fail at any time without warning.

Rheem must recall the gas valve control assembly, it is always at fault. You can't live without heated water every nine to 12 months of the year! I have one with mfg date. I believe the problem from what I understand is there is a white fuse which sits between the thermocouple and the solinoid. The fuse is crap. It fails alot and cant be replaced. This will not allow the pilot to light or if it does it wont stay lit for long. One video showed that a gut removed it, replaced the thermocouple and it worked like a charm. Its there in case the water reached 185 it will shut off the tank. I would thing the thermostat would take care of that. Heaters have been working without this for years. Probably just a CYA in case of litigation. Not very well quality tested

The gas control thermostat failed on my Rheem Professional Series too. Called Rheem and it’s a known problem. Gave them my serial number and the parts were sent FREE two day FedEx. It would have been nice if they would have sent out a gift card for the inconvenience. I know, too much to ask.

In the UK you are not allowed by law to fit or work on Gas appliances unless you are a suitably trained and experienced Gas Fitter.
Looking at this install by the homeowner although it wasn't necessarily dangerous it was not installed correctly either and therefore could have been dangerous.
How do you cover yourself when you are working on a 'homeowner special' where you have just installed a gas valve but are not happy with the way the boiler has been piped in , if it was a danger I guess you'd refuse to fit the valve?
Thanks for the great video & have a good weekend.

they may be able to get most or all the labor reimbursed by calling Rheem still.
