In this episode of Lawrie Goes Loco, I do something I've never done before - I get to to drive on the Tramway of a dockside railway! We visit the Historic Dockyard Chatham and get to grips with the most well travelled locomotive that I've ever has the pleasure to get behind the throttle of - Overlord!

The cap on the top of the chimney is so that no rain water can fall into the exhaust system
could it not be a spark shield too? after all it did got to an ammunition depot? i know it will not spark like a steamer does but i have seen a few diesels that do! lol

@@Quasihamster If a diesel engine has been idling for an extended period, it can develop some carbon deposits (soot) in the exhaust system. When the engine is then throttled up (especially under load) the hot exhaust from the cylinders can readily ignite the soot particles and force them out of the "chimney", making a rather spectacular display.

Lovely little Diesel, one of her siblings is preserved in the Netherlands and is alocated at the Museum Buurtspoorweg in Enschede. They recently restored a small rake of USATC trucks for it :D

Overlord is a pretty badass name for such a tiny engine.
Very nice you made a video of this locomotive.
I'm building a 7mm model of this very loco and one of the volunteers working on it provided me with a load of photographs of details on this locomotive.
But your in depth walk around during the prep did show some areas not covered by the pictures I have.
So I immediately wrote details into my building notices and marked them on the parts.
One of these lovely locomotives has been restored in running condition here in the Netherlands.
It was one of the four initial locomotives landed on the beach before the harbour of Cherbourg was made operational again by the allies.
They arrived on landing craft and were pulled onto the beach on sleds by caterpillars and towards the closest existing rail head, were they started work on rebuilding destroyed parts of the railway.
Several of these little engines were bought by the Dutch Railways (NS) and did get air train brake to operate on a light railway in the east of the country.
The engine now saved went to a colliery together with another one after the light railway was closed and the locomotives disposed off by NS.
That colliery was Laura&Vereeniging in Eygelshoven in the south east of the Netherlands, the part I live.
From the colliery the locomotive went to Belgium, moving wagons in a landfill for a few years before becoming line sided and put up for sale.
From there it was acquired by Stibans, a preservation society. They started restoration, bought a second loco from the UK for parts but never finished the restoration.
That was done by its current owners, Stichting 162 and it has been in operation on several railways since.
First in wartime WD black livery no. 33, and more recently in NS green and black carrying its NS number 162.

Love the sound of the Gardner engines. I had a feeling that's what would be in this loco. This loco demonstrates that some things survive because they are a perfect fit for what they were made to do and did it well. It does not hurt if they look and sound great.

Awesome video. My guess is that the plate on top of the chimney/exhaust is to keep water out, but that's only a guess
I think you are correct as classic tractor owners with straight end exhausts have to have either a flappy cap or remember to slot a baked bean can over the exhaust to stop water going into the exhaust. New tractors have a bent tip exhaust to prevent this.
Could be a low budget spark arrestor, too.
Actually it’s a way of keeping the exhaust fumes at low level so enemy forces couldn’t see where the engine was

On the Falmouth Docks they used to use the engines to pull the ships into the Dry Docks. With a Gardner 6LW I suspect this beastie would pull HMS Gannet back up the M2 if you asked it to!

Got to love the Andrew Barclay stuff, I feel like the hood design and drive gear almost takes inspiration from their squarish saddle tanks, and that cab interior is almost steam engine-ey too, somehow. The jackshaft adds so much to the motion of this thing. A wonderful little engine!
It seems as though it's preserved more like a historic tank or armored vehicle, which I find quite interesting, too, lovely job of preserving it
The BMG Black Five, Royal Scot and Jubilee classes all have advanced modes for TS 2020. And soon, Caledonia Works products will have advanced modes as well, using the locomotion script. So its not just the German locos, you can also drive British ones as well.

Hey, I live near Chatham! It's funny hearing names of places I'm familiar with here in north-eastern America haha... Of course, these names around here were inspired by the originals on your side of the pond (where my family is originally from!). We also have Barnstable, Falmouth, Yarmouth, Truro, Plymouth, Weymouth, Taunton, Boston, Cambridge, Worcester, Bridgewater, Ipswich... The list goes on and on and these are just names here in Massachusetts! It really is a "New England" over here. These are all mixed in with Native American names like Mashpee, Cotuit and Cummaquid as well.

Superb! I have not seen Overlord, but I have seen and travelled behind Grumpy at the Avon Valley Railway (as it has train vacuum brakes), and it is superb!
railways and warships...two of my favorite things! that makes this video amazing to me. I suppose if she hadn't started you could've gotten a blank round off Cavalier and fired her up in a different way, lol! you know, "Flight of the Phoenix" style.
EDIT: I'd just like to say this too: the racket of the wagons when you move off for the first time: just ringing and rumbling. that was magnificent! that's something you don't get here in the states with bogie cars. and I love that almost as much as the engine noise, no offense!
The significance of the name is that Operation Overlord was the code name for the Allied D-Day landings in 1944. The loco was then shipped over in September (part of the follow up logistics ops after the primarily steam-powered logistics of 3rd Army push to Paris through June/July)
8:14 I have a theory in what that that part is for:
during the War, there was an experimental Engine that had three chimneys (or funnels) that sprayed steam everywhere, so it wouldn’t be sighted by enemy planes. That part could help to create a cloud of exhaust, making it hard for enemies to see it above in the air.
The idea of the multi chimney was to disperse the smoke from the chimney to prevent it creating an obvious visual target.
It didn't work.
It wouldn't be spraying steam, firstly you'd empty the boiler in no time to create that much, and secondly you'd make it very obvious that there was a locomotive there, on the railway which is easy to see from a plane.

I wouldve thought the lights wouldve been like a dynamo, as it progresses it gets brighter the faster you go
If that were the case, roll it down a hill, see if you can blind any poor unfortunate souls at the bottom who happen to look your way!
It is nice to see the behind logistics equipment get some love. Also I think the reason there is a vent on top and not the sides is in case of flying shrapnel and stray rounds dont hit the motor, same goes for the plate on top of the exhaust chimney.

There is something special about the early diesel locomotives as you notice they still have a steam locomotive style cabs with no doors. I have been meaning to visit the Chatham dock yard as its a historical place but also a very famous TV programme with lots of nuns and babies had dock yard scenes filmed there and my mom loves that programme.
That place had A LOT of trackwork. I liked the shot of the tight double switch 2:33. One could have quite the model railway based upon just the Chatham Docks! Awesome video, Lawrie! John Canada

Another awesome review and I love the new intro! Fun fact: just like the austerity's these also worked in The Netherlands as the NS 160 class. Only one of NS 160's is preserved that being NS 162 [little bit of a shameful plug but I have some footage of her on my channel if you want to see her in action].

A very enjoyable video! The locomotive is great, but I also loved seeing the last wagon in your train, the one from the Fife Coal Company. My parents grew up in Fife, and I wouldn't be surprised if I had at least one ancestor who worked for the company. They owned many of the collieries around my parents' home town of Kirkcaldy before the NCB was formed.
Very weird and yet awesome to see the Dockyard on UA-cam. I've lived in the area my whole life and have been to the Dockyard many times for both business and pleasure, and have on numerous occasions seen the lovely sight of the trains trundling around.
While you were here did you get a chance to look at any of the steam rail cranes that are usually parked around the site (most often by the waterfront)? They definitely seem like they'd be your sort of thing.
Talking of extensive railway systems, the whole area has significant rail history, born in part from competition between the East Kent Railway (latter the London, Chatham & Dover Railway) and the South Eastern Railway as well as the military railways and the numerous industries. Just up the river from the Dockyard is Strood and Rochester: Strood has had three different stations and Rochester has just recently opened it's fourth station (though one of those was called Chatham Central) in addition to both towns extensive goods yards. And of course on the other side of the river from the Dockyard is Upnor which had a narrow gauge munitions line running up past Chattenden, plus another narrow gauge line running from the river near Borstal to some of the outer forts surrounding the Dockyard. Oh and trams connected all the towns as well. Basically you couldn't move in Medway without tripping over a railway or two. Unfortunately and rather annoyingly for me most of it had disappeared by the time I was born, all that's really left now is the relatively small section in the Historic Dockyard 😢

The cap on the smoke stack may be for preventing water getting into the exhaust if the loco is left outside, like the flaps on tractor exhausts. However, I think it's more likely to be for dispersing the heat signature created by the exhaust, therefore making it much harder to identify and target for aircraft equipped with night vision or early infrared equipment, which would be very useful with this loco having served in Operation Overlord...

The Funnel part is a spark arrester. Looks like it was put on to run in the munitions spaces. usually it owuld have some sort of gauze wrapped round it.

This shunter is a similar design to Powfoot No. 1 at the Doon Valley railway, which produces a similar volume of smoke when starting.

hey, Lawrie! I saw (of course) you talking about train simulation games at the beginning of the the video. Ive played quite a few, but none have ever met the real feeling I get playing "Derail valley", it has a small selection of locomotives, but the realism is like nothing else. you fire up locomotives the same (or turn them on in the case of diesel locomotives) run them the same, theres even manuals in game for all of them. and the best feature of the game, by far, its its VR support. you can do all this in VR! like you're really there. www.derailvalley.com/
Try playing Run 8 with a Raildriver controller. The graphics aren't great, but the realism in the physics is top notch when it comes to modern american diesels.

The flat plate on your chimney is a very basic rain cap. Might also be useful at stopping a lot of debris from going down into the exhuast.

Just said to the mrs that we gotta go there when we can, Ckme from a navy family and my grandad served in the war on a frigate and my dad was in the navy from 80's till early 2000's and served on frigates and destroyers so defo wanna see what a WW2 destroyer was like, nice video keep it up looking forward to more.
A very nice looking engine indeed, kind of reminds me of the Swedish Z64 class shunter although it's a bit larger and has the jackshaft between the wheels instead of behind them.
the plate on top the is likely to mitigate how much rain goes in there. same function as the flap you see on construction equipment or low use diesels - to try and keep water from collecting inside the exhaust or ultimately, into the engine itself. lots of style points though, its a very convincing chimney. it could also be because its a military locomotive, that plate could have been added to deflect the exhaust and spread it out instead of having a plume of diesel exhaust straight up from the locomotive that's easier to spot at a distance..
i would like to note that a lot of military vehicles are much louder than their civilian counterparts so that engine is probably entirely capable of sneaking up on them. a flashing warning light would be very useful for that. especially if the weather is foul. for much the same reason you see them on challenger 2 tanks, anything to prevent an accident with a multi-ton vehicle is a good one.
i wonder if the military was interested in having an engine with a cab that large. it appears you could have several people along in there for short periods of time.
lovely engine though, they are taking exceptionally good care of it. though as a military vehicle, it probably was kept at a pretty decent level through much of its working life.

Yes! I love this little engine
The expression is "enough room to swing a dead cat". Swinging a live one can be hazardous.
I believe the expression refers to the cat o' nine tails (which you would need a bit of space to swing), not an actual cat.
The whistle of the loco sounds similar to the Loco's on the North Bay Railway in Scarborough.
As the loco revs it sounds like a class 37.

Stupid question though....if everything works on Overlord, why did Planet have to pull the train back to the shed...why not just reverse Overlord? Guessing that was just for fun and to give Planet some exercise as well?

It's just for safety, as it's a museum, it's far safer to pull your train through the Dockyard than to push a train through

One of these is preserved at the Isle of Wight steam railway numbered WD235
The one at the Isle of Wight steam railway can happily pull a 60 tonne locomotive

@@lmm we are currently having to use it instead of our 03 as that's currently having some maintenance done on it. Our 05 is also out of use due to the gear box having issues

The ugly cap on top of the chimney exhaust is to stop rain getting inside the exhaust pipe. The chimney itself is in fact a spark arrestor fitted with baffles and a soot trap that has to be cleaned out once a month or so, depending on use. That top plate was ugly and my job as a loco fitter and driver for the MOD meant I could remove them, which i did on most of the locos. The chimneys also acted as extra weight on the front end of these loco, which were built by both Andrew Barclay and Drewry/Vulcan. Some of this class were re-engined in the late 1950's and 60's and these lost their nice chimney and ended up with the cone exhaust with the silly flap ( which I also removed from any loco i could ) All MOD locos were shedded over night so didn't need any 'anti-rain device' . They were (are) great locos to work on. As you can see, the plate they have refitted over the chimney stops the exhaust from being lifted above the loco and it blows into the cab instead. Wonderful !

Hi Lawrie. Lovely video. I enjoyed your day out almost as much as you! Now, you're a 'mechanical' sort of guy - I know that the connecting rods (to use a generic term) on steam engines are 'quartered' to prevent lock-ups, etc., but I cannot fathom the mechanics as to why synchronised gear would be a problem; can you explain why, please?
